Will Eva Green'>Eva Green escape the 'Bond curse'?
By JIM SLOTEK -- Toronto Sun
A little bit Barbara Bach (The Spy Who Loved Me) and a little bit Carole
Bouquet (For Your Eyes Only), French actress Eva Green'>Eva Green definitely has the
decolletage to be a Bond girl.
But according to one school of thought, the relative unknown -- who was
announced last week to play original Bond girl Vesper Lynd opposite newly
crowned James Bond Daniel Craig in Casino Royale (which opens Nov. 17) -- is
now doomed to stay a relative unknown.
Green's previous major exposure has been as Orlando Bloom's love interest in
the big-budget Crusades bomb Kingdom Of Heaven. So careerwise, she is a
blank slate.
But as blank as Lois Chiles, who played Holly Goodhead in Moonraker? Or Lana
Wood who played Plenty O'Toole in Diamonds Are Forever?
Whether there's a career-killing "Bond curse" or not (and there are enough
post-Bond success stories to at least poke holes in the theory), the
latter-day Bond era of big-name leading ladies appears to be over.
The part of Vesper, Bond's tragic one true love according to the Ian Fleming
books, was reportedly turned down by the likes of Angelina Jolie, Charlize
Theron, Scarlett Johansson, Thandie Newton and Canadian girl Rachel McAdams.
Is it the bimbo factor? If so, it's an unfair rap if you consider Bond girls
pre- and post- what I consider the null-point of Bond and his Girls -- The
Living Daylights.
TLD, you may recall, was the film that introduced Timothy Dalton as a
humourless Bond. Released at the height of the AIDS scare, it was the first
film in which Bond became a one-woman man (girl next door Maryam D'Abo as
the cello-playing Kara Milovy), and the first in which it's suggested he
doesn't sleep with his leading lady or anybody else.
Listen, you don't want a guy with a licence to kill getting cranky.
James and Kara ride a Ferris wheel. They hug and hold hands. They might as
well have cast Timothy Hutton.
Before? Well, there was a bit of Austin Powers in Bond lines like, "There's
something I want you to get off your chest" (Diamonds Are Forever). And
perhaps a touch of misogyny in how quickly he moves on after a bedmate is
poisoned by his side (You Only Live Twice). But it was the times, and the
role of Bond girl was that of sex kitten.
After? As often as not, Bond girls kicked more butt (Grace Slick, Famke
Janssen, Michelle Yeoh), and toyed with Bond as much as he used to toy with
the likes of Tiffany Case. So maybe Angelina et al are just paying heed to
Halle Berry's inauspicious post-Bond career (Catwoman? Gothika?).
You don't want your last words, careerwise, to be: "Oh, James!"

Kong Girl Snubs Bond
King Kong actress Naomi Watts has been tipped as favourite to be 007's next
leading lady.
But according to The Sun, insiders claim she will turn down the chance to
star alongside new James Bond actor Daniel Craig.
The word is that she fears the "Curse of the Bond Girl" could thwart her
career...
Halle Berry played Jinx in 2002's Die Another Day, but consequent films like
Catwoman haven't bought her the success of her pre-Bond Oscar-winning glory.
Teri Hatcher also cosied-up to Bond for Tomorrow Never Dies, but until
Desperate Housewives came along, the roles weren't forthcoming.
Other former Bond Babes like Britt Eckland, Barbara Bach and Ursula Andress
also saw their careers flounder after shaking the famous spy's Martini.
We will have to wait and see who will join Daniel on set for the filming of
Bond's latest adventure.
The Casino Royale remake is due to be released in November 2006.
Who'd have thought James Bond would be struggling to find a date?

Ringo calls for birthplace to be saved
24/05/2005 - 10:57:58
The birthplace and childhood home of former Beatle Ringo Starr is in the
balance following plans to bulldoze it.
The Victorian terrace at 9 Madryn Street, in Toxteth, Liverpool, where the
drummer lived for four years, is one of a number of properties earmarked for
demolition under a Government-backed regeneration scheme.
Starr has called for the homes to be refurbished rather than demolished.
But bosses at the Newheartlands pathfinder scheme stressed that no final
decision had been made about the future of the properties, which are known
as the Welsh streets.
A spokeswoman for the scheme said: "No decision has been taken about the
Welsh streets as yet.
"We understand the cultural significance of Ringo's birthplace and are
proposing innovative ways of reflecting this in any future development.
"I'm sure that Ringo would welcome proposals to improve the quality of
housing and potential investment of millions of pounds in the area where he
grew up."
At the Chelsea Flower Show yesterday, where he and his wife Barbara Bach
were opening a garden, Starr said: "Why are they knocking them down? If it
is economically viable, they should do them up.
"Are they going to knock out the centre of Liverpool again?
"That's what they did before. They moved everybody to high-rise apartments
outside the city and forgot to rebuild.
"I believe it's now very nice. They even have bathrooms, which we never
had."
Starr lived briefly at Madryn Street before moving around the corner to
Admiral Street, where he lived for 20 years.
Madryn Street is part of a development which was originally built to house
migrant workers from north Wales.

PORTIA de Rossi is removing all traces of the lesbian lover she ditched for
Ellen DeGeneres.
As we were the first to report a few weeks ago, de Rossi and DeGeneres
jettisoned their respective longtime lady loves to move in together. When de
Rossi was "engaged" to gal pal Francesca Gregorini, she had her lover's
initials "FG" tattooed on her ring finger as a sign of devotion, and they
planned to get "married," pals say.
Now de Rossi has made an appointment with a dermatologist to have the mark
lasered off, a source close to the actress told PAGE SIX's Jared Paul Stern. If
it can't be done, she'll try to have it covered up or altered a la Johnny Depp,
who changed his "Winona Forever" tattoo to "Wino Forever" after his bust-up
with Winona Ryder.
De Rossi has been "gushing about Ellen to anyone who will listen," we're told,
while Gregorini is left hanging. De Rossi and Gregorini had planned to spend
the holidays together in de Rossi's native Australia, but the blond bombshell
will now be staying in L.A. to celebrate with DeGeneres.
Meanwhile, de Rossi, the sexy "Arrested Development" star, was disappointed at
not being nominated for a Golden Globe. She was hoping her new high-profile
romance might give her an added push with the publicity-hungry Hollywood
Foreign Press Association, which dispenses the awards.
"She's devastated," we're told. De Rossi campaigned hard and thought the Golden
Globe judges would salivate at the prospect of her and DeGeneres posing
together on their red carpet.
And tabloid reports that de Rossi and DeGeneres are planning to have a baby are
baloney, our sources insist. "Portia has said many times she does not want to
have a baby," we're told. "She's only interested in her career right now and
doesn't really even want kids in the long run. Francesca wanted a baby badly,
and that was a huge issue for them."
Another tabloid tale that Gregorini plans to sue de Rossi for "galimony" also
appears to be nonsense. Gregorini, daughter of Bond girl Barbara Bach and
stepdaughter of Ringo Starr, has plenty of her own dough, we're told. There
will be an issue over their lavish house in Los Feliz, however, which Gregorini
and de Rossi bought together.
De Rossi's rep could not be reached for comment, while DeGeneres' rep declined
to discuss her client's personal life.

Portia's finger woe
From Sydney Confidential
January 04, 2005
PORTIA de Rossi seems determined to wash her hands of the ex-lover she
dumped for Hollywood star Ellen DeGeneres.
She's reportedly looking at ways of removing the tattoo on her finger which
bears the initials of her former longtime lady love Francesca Gregorini.
De Rossi, 31, and DeGeneres, 46, recently shacked up together after they
ditched their girlfriends.
The former Geelong girl born Mandy Rogers has been to see a dermatologist in
a bid to have the "FG" tattoo, which she had done as a sign of devotion to
Gregorini, removed from her finger.
The Arrested Development star was due to bring Gregorini, daughter of
one-time Bond girl Barbara Bach and stepdaughter to Ringo Starr, home to
Australia for Christmas but whooped it up in LA with DeGeneres instead.
The twosome met about a year ago and were instantly attracted to each other
but their relationship didn't develop until late last year when they were
reunited at the VH1 awards gala in LA.
Their union has sparked some to snipe that de Rossi was hoping the
high-profile affair would bring her a coveted Golden Globe nomination.
The New York Post reported she was devastated when she was overlooked by the
Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which she said would salivate at the
prospect of her and DeGeneres posing together on their red carpet.
The paper's sources have also played down reports that the former Ally
McBeal star wants to have a baby with the talk show host.
"She's only interested in her career right now and doesn't really even want
kids in the long run," a source said.
"Francesca wanted a baby badly and that was a huge issue for them."
