Sure they've had good impersonations over the years, whether
politicians or otherwise. Darrell Hammind, Phil Hartman and Jay Mohr
were all great impersonators.
Then there are the others who are more live caricaturists than
impersonators like you said.

Actually, Phil Hartman'>Phil Hartman still makes more people laugh than the average new
SNL -- without being dug up.

Well, the show does seem to lack original thought and is worse than even the
Michael Anthony Hall/Robert Downey Jr year. I love Dane Cook'>Dane Cook but that show
was terrible. I look forward to the Weekend Updates(which are getting worse)
and hope for a funny toon from Smigel. The show needs a better writing staff
and to dig up Phil Hartman and sign him and Darrell Hammond for the next 15
years.

Darrell Hammond is better than Phil Hartman'>Phil Hartman'>Phil Hartman'>Phil Hartman ever was or ever could be.
Hartman sucked.
Correction...Phil Hartman'>Phil Hartman'>Phil Hartman'>Phil Hartman was one of the worst.

At least he's working. He made me laugh really hard once on
"Newsradio" when he stayed at the office all night playing the video
game....everyone knew a dude like him....Classic.
That and Phil Hartman walking down the fake stairs behind the desk
smoking a cigarette....
Sorry but I just can't hate Dave Foley no matter how many bad career
choices he makes.
The whole newsradio thing before they started trying too hard to be
edgy was great TV. He was a big reason for it.

The WORST is Horatio Sanz I cringe whenever he comes on screen. He
can't get through one sketch without laughing. I guess he's the only
one who think's he's funny.
Amy Poehler doing that teenager sketch where Horatio plays her
(stepfather?) is hilarious, though. Amy, not him.

He is probably more afraid of dying than failing.

Hammond has talent, but he is half of what Hartman was. This is not a
slam at Hammond. Phil Hartman'>Phil Hartman was one of the best.

Hasn't Darryl Hammond been on SNL for ages? One would wonder if he's
thought of leaving but then looked at the track records of those who
have and where they've gotten. If he would leave, I wonder who would
take up most of the impersonations.

Darrell Hammond is just as good as Phil Hartman'>Phil Hartman ever was. He's being wasted
in this cast.

Aside from Hammond, the women are the best performers on the show now. At
least Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudulph, and Amy Poehler are.

Plus, they don't have the performers who are good at several things -
like Phil Hartman and so on. The characters they do now all seem the
same.
I also think they rely too much on the women in the cast, like Amy P. -
she's in almost every sketch. They don't have any dominate male
performers like in the past. They need to have both.
If they got better performers, maybe the bad writing wouldn't be as
obvious.

Why in hell would he deride THE GREAT John Peel.
It brings to mind Phil Hartman as Sinatra and his classic line to Billy
Idol, "I got chunks of guys like you in my stool>"
