service for Dana Reeve, actress and widow of Superman actor Christopher
Reeve.
Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was among those at the New York service.
New York senator Mrs Clinton said Reeve was "one of the most
exceptional people I have ever known".
Reeve, 44, cared for her husband after he was paralysed in an accident,
and led his charity fund. She died of lung cancer in March.
Speaking after the service, Mrs Clinton - wife of former President Bill
Clinton - said it had been "a very fitting tribute".
"She had a light within her that was captured by the way people talked
about her today, especially her son and stepchildren," she said.
The Producers actor Matthew Broderick said the two-hour private service
had been "beautiful but very, very sad".
CNN news presenter Paula Zahn, a long-time friend, said she had not
resorted to self-pity after being diagnosed with cancer and "had a
positive impact on everyone and everything she touched".
"She really expected to come home," said Zahn. "She truly believed she

Reeve, a non-smoker all her life, was a singer when she met her
husband.
They married in 1992 and celebrated the arrival of son Will in the same

All three of Reeve's children attended the service at the New Amsterdam
Theatre.
Three years later after the couple's marriage, Christopher Reeve
suffered a riding accident and was left paralysed from the neck down.
The Aviator actor Alec Baldwin attended the memorial service
Dana Reeve devoted her life to his care, and immediately gave up her
career.
Her acting credits included guest appearances in police dramas Law And
Order and Feds.
She also played Wendy Schulz in a number of episodes of prison series
Oz.
Reeve took over her husband's work at the Christopher Reeve Foundation
after his death in October 2004 at the age of 52 from an infection
resulting from a pressure wound.

Garry Maddox meets the first-time director who made a Tom Cruise movie.
A PLANE crash on a tropical island. A polar bear. And Tom Cruise. It's been
quite a couple of years for J.J.Abrams.
While filming the pilot for Lost in Hawaii, the co-creator of the hit
television series took an unexpected phone call from the world's biggest
movie star. Impressed by Alias, another successful series that Abrams
created, Cruise suggested they hang out back in Los Angeles.
"I thought 'what?,"' the director says. "That's insane."
That unlikely invitation led to meetings, dinners, then an offer to direct
Mission: Impossible III when Narc's Joe Carnahan dropped out. "It was the
most surreal, unexpected thing of all time," Abrams says of the offer.
The quick-witted filmmaker was in Sydney yesterday, on a promotional tour
with actress Michelle Monaghan before the movie's release on May 4.
The movie is yet to arrive, with just eight minutes available to screen for
journalists so far. They show Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman as a
villain and Monaghan as Ethan Hunt's (Cruise's) love interest.
There's also the traditional Mission: Impossible action, with Hunt evading
missiles amid a tangle of overturned vehicles on a bridge. Cruise has, of
course, attracted more than his share of wacky headlines lately over his
relationship with Katie Holmes and his interest in Scientology.
"I think he's a very passionate guy," says Abrams. "So my guess is all of it
stems from that - his commitment to whatever it is he believes in, including
me on this movie .
"All the noise and everything that has been in the press feels very
incongruous with the experience of the day-to-day working with this guy."
Abrams started out in movies, writing Regarding Henry, Forever Young and
Armageddon, before creating the TV series Felicity.
He was surprised to learn that Mission: Impossible III is reputedly the most
expensive movie - a budget of $US150 million ($206 million) said one
report - for a first-time director in Hollywood history. "I'm glad no one
said that to me before we wrapped," Abrams says. "I probably would have just
had to stay home, catatonic in the foetal position."
As for his latest hit series, will viewers eventually understand what Lost
is all about?
" Lost will never be The Sixth Sense - 'oh, he's dead'," Abrams says. "It's
not that kind of experience . the idea of Lost was always in many ways to
create a sort of tapestry of character and backstory and situation that over
time reveals itself.
"But as you can see in the latest episodes, it's hardly a show that doesn't
answer questions. It might raise other ones but it certainly answers those
that are out there."

NEW YORK - Now the question for viewers of "The Sopranos" is: Will Vito
eat the barrel of his gun? Or will he lack the guts, then get whacked
by his appalled paisans? Fans could be overheard waging bets Monday
outside Manhattan buildings.
"Five bucks, he doesn't have another line," said one.
"Not counting flashbacks?" wondered another.
Wearing appropriate leather-bar attire, Vito Spatafore - the
heretofore closeted gay mobster - was sighted in Sunday night's
episode (stop reading now if you want to watch it later) by a couple of
wiseguys who came by the sweaty S&M joint to collect their protection
money.
"It's a joke," Vito tries to explain to the duo. Finally he begs:
"Don't say nothin'!"
By the end of the show, the crestfallen Vito - played by Joseph R.
Gannascoli - has checked into a motel, looking suicidally at his gun
on the nightstand.
Fans of the HBO series were stunned last season when Meadow's
boyfriend, Finn, saw a security guard sitting in the driver's seat of a
truck - and then Vito's head popped up.
This season, Vito has hung around the hospital while Tony Soprano was
recovering from a gunshot wound, trying to ingratiate himself with
Tony's wife while plotting with Paulie Walnuts to grab her cut of a big
score. And he's chomped on carrots while prattling on about all the
weight he's losing. (In real life, he's down to 260 from a high of 400
pounds.)
Now that the gay story line is heating up, Gannascoli is immensely
pleased, in part because it was his idea to make Vito homosexual.
"I saw him as, like, a cross between Mike Tyson and Liberace," the
47-year-old Brooklyn-born actor told The Associated Press in an
interview at his home. "I wanted to make him sort of in self-denial,
self-loathing, a real gay hater."
Gannascoli's suggestion was inspired by the book "Murder Machine,"
about the Gambino family, which had an openly gay member also named
Vito.
"They didn't bother him about it, because I guess he was good at what
he did, which was chopping up bodies," Gannascoli said.
Gannascoli concedes that he had a self-serving motivation for making
the suggestion: Breaking out of the pack.
"I thought that was a way of separating myself from the other actors,
because I would have been in the background most of the time. You know,
line here, line there, and nothing really substantial," said
Gannascoli, whose character previously was best known for whacking
Jackie Aprile Jr. "To really make an impact is all I can ask for."
He also thought it would create an interesting acting challenge. But
even in a year that has seen "Brokeback Mountain" become a cultural
phenomenon and Philip Seymour Hoffman win an Oscar playing Truman
Capote, Gannascoli knows the reaction to Vito won't be all positive.
"I'm a Brooklyn guy. I was just in Brooklyn last night. And, you know,
I had some real wise guys that look at me and they give me dirty looks.
I've had guys, like, come after me in clubs," he said.
He just hopes the "cerebral people" will appreciate his performance.
Gannascoli said "The Sopranos" has changed his life "in so many ways."
"Recognition, I'd say, the most. It allowed me to get married."
It's also allowed Gannascoli to buy his house ("which coming from a
rent-controlled apartment all my life was a huge step up"), get his
novel published ("A Meal to Die For," loosely based on his life in the
restaurant business) and develop a signature line of food (olive oil,
tomato sauce, barbecue sauce, salsa and wine).
"While I'm not going to be cheffing anymore, I'm going to be still
involved in food. Which is one of my passions."
He considered becoming a lawyer like his older brother but dropped out
of St. John's University after two years. He did well the first year
but by his second year, "I had a huge Quaalude business" that
sidetracked him. ("I was hustlin', you know.")
He then bounced around, working at various New York restaurants and
becoming a "self-taught" kitchen magician. He even headed to New
Orleans and learned Cajun cooking in the '80s.
He owned all or part of a few restaurants over the years, but disliked
the "day-to-day machinations" of keeping them going.
It was during one of his numerous food-service jobs when acting felt
like the dish of the day. A waiter-friend (who, like so many in New
York, also was an aspiring actor) urged him to audition for a play. He
got the role and started taking acting lessons.
But he soon found himself pushing an ice-cream cart on Wall Street
before eventually opening another eatery. He got burnt out from working
9 a.m. to 2 at night and started gambling heavily.
On the last day of the 1990 pro football regular season he was in a
hole. Like any desperate gambler, he tried to win it back fast.
"Cody Carlson is responsible for my acting," Gannascoli joked, able to
laugh about it now.
The backup Houston Oilers quarterback started in place of injured Hall
of Famer Warren Moon and had a great game against betting favorite
Pittsburgh. The Steelers lost, and Gannascoli was out $60,000.
Gannascoli paid off his debts with equity from his restaurant, thus
avoiding a real-life leg-breaking - or worse - and then decided to
head to L.A.
On the West Coast, he met Benicio Del Toro, which led to an
audition and small role in the 1993 feature "Money for Nothing" - and
a meeting with Georgianne Walken ( Christopher Walken's wife) and
Sheila Jaffe.
Both Jaffe and Walken are casting directors who've chosen actors for
roles in scores of films and TV shows - including "The Sopranos."
Gannascoli underwent hip-replacement surgery last week and hopes the
increased mobility will help him exercise and lose more weight. But
while controlling his Falstaffian appetites, he'd loved to develop a
hybrid cooking/sports show. He'd have a famous athlete as a guest and
they'd cook up one of the player's favorite dishes while talking about
his career and showing clips.
He'd like to call it "Food Bowl."

Academy begins to correct the boring nature of its own program. Not a
single, dang durn viewer gives a shitizzle about the President of the
Academy coming out onto the stage and addressing the audience on the
importance of film and motion pictures. Nobody cares about all these
retrospectives. The Academy only has about six major categories, and they
front load the beginning of the show with one major award, then tease
everyone along for the rest of the interminably long show to get to the last
major categories. The show always runs long. It ought to take a cue from the
Golden Globes. The show needs more categories as well. It's too
conservative.

Best Supporting Actor celebrated his win at Dan Tana's with Madonna and
Guy, Rachel Weisz and Darren Aronofsky, and other friends. But "The
Insider's" Marc Malkin says he heard that Clooney and Allen also
slipped out the back while the Ritchies distracted paparazzi.
Among the other devoted duos at the Vanity Fair bash: Nicole Kidman and
Keith Urban (touching each other under a table); Jennifer Lopez and
Marc Anthony; Sandra Bullock and Jesse James; Taye Diggs and Idina
Menzel; Rachel Griffiths and Andrew Taylor; Jessica Alba and Cash
Warren; Jennifer Jason Leigh and Noah Baumbach; Brittany Murphy and Joe

Revlon billionaire Ron Perelman turned up stag at the party, where he
hit it off a few years back with soon-to-be-ex-wife Ellen Barkin. Keanu
Reeves came without Lynn Collins. Hilary Swank, who's been working her
way back to hubby Chad Lowe, arrived without him - but she was
wearing her wedding ring.
Swank, who presented Philip Seymour Hoffman with his Best Actor trophy,
reassured the "Capote" star when he forgot to thank his girlfriend,
Mimi O'Donnell. "No one forgot like I forgot," said Swank, who famously
neglected to mention Lowe when she won her first Oscar. "But people
will understand."
Hoffman told us the whole experience was "nerve-racking." (At least he
didn't have to "bark" his acceptance speech, as he once promised
director Bennett Miller and writer Dan Futterman in a drunken moment.
"They let me off the hook, but said, 'If you do bark, we will meow,"
recalled Hoffman.)
Of course, Robert Altman was there with his wife of 47 years, Kathryn.
Having revealed in his Oscar speech that he had a heart transplant 10
years ago, Altman admitted that he worried then that "no one would hire
me." Kathryn recalled how they got USA Today to "correct" a Variety
story reporting the surgery. "We denied it like hell," she said. "And
his career went on. It had a happy ending."
Elsewhere at the Vanity Fair party, worlds collided when novelist
Salman Rushdie hung out with Three 6 Mafia, who won gold for "It's Hard
Out Here for a Pimp." "That's the song I was really rooting for," said
Rushdie. "I really liked 'Hustle and Flow.'"
Rapper Juicy Jay was not as familiar with Rushdie's "Satanic Verses,"
but he did like the poetry of Rushdie's wife, Padma Lakshmi, as the
model and actress shook to the music on top of an ottoman. "Oooh," said
Juicy.

US TV audience for Oscars falls

The US television audience for the 78th Academy Awards was down by 8%
compared with last year.
The ceremony, which saw 'Crash' shock the favourite 'Brokeback Mountain' by
taking best film, was watched by 38.8m people, the third lowest audience in
20 years.
The three-and-a-half hour ceremony from Los Angeles was hosted by Jon
Stewart, presenter of the satirical 'Daily Show'.
According to the Nielsen ratings, the 2003 show got the lowest audience,
with 33m tuning in.
Pundits had predicted that interest could fall this year due to the highbrow
nature of the five movies nominated for best film - 'Brokeback Mountain',
'Capote', 'Crash', 'Munich' and 'Good Night, and Good Luck'.
Also the best actor winner Philip Seymour Hoffman is not a household name.
Meanwhile, distributor Pathe will re-release 'Crash' in 70 cinemas in
Ireland this week, seven months after it was first released, following its
Oscar success.

Swank Comforted Mortified Hoffman
Hilary Swank felt qualified to comfort Philip Seymour Hoffman after he
forgot to thank his girlfriend in his acceptance speech at Sunday's Academy
Awards - because she mirrored his actions in 2000. Swank presented the
Capote star with the Best Actor trophy at the glitzy Oscar ceremony and as
the two were walking offstage, Hoffman realized he had forgotten to thank
his girlfriend, Mimi O'Donnell. The actress empathized with Hoffman saying,
"Oh, I know. No one forgot like I forgot. But people will understand, they
really will. You can't kick yourself over it." Swank forgot to thank her
husband Chad Lowe, when she won her first Oscar for Boys Don't Cry, but made
a point of thanking him last year, when she won her second Best Actress
honor for Million Dollar Baby.

Hollywood (AFP) - Tension reached fever pitch as
Hollywood began the final countdown to Sunday's Oscars,
with a posse of "serious" films, led by "Brokeback
Mountain," set to overrun the big night.
As workers frantically put the finishing touches on
preparations for the 78th annual Academy Awards, which
start with the legendary red carpet celebrity fashion
show, the anxious nominees are crossing their fingers.
In a year laden with small-budget movies packing weighty
political or social messages, Taiwan director Ang Lee's
film about gay cowboys is the frontrunner for the top
awards, including best picture and best director.
"We're almost there and I think 'Brokeback' is still
leading the race," said veteran Hollywood Reporter online
columnist Marty Grove.
But the aching story of two macho farmhands who fall in
love despite themselves and pursue an unfulfilled 20-year
romance faces a last-minute challenge from a dark horse,
Paul Haggis's racial drama "Crash."
"The buzz is that the threat to 'Brokeback' from 'Crash'
is now very real," awards expert Tom O'Neil of the
website theEnvelope.com said of the tiny independent
movie that may crash Ang Lee's party.
"'Brokeback' has a passionate following, but you also
have 'Capote' and 'Transamerica' this year and they may
have created a gay fatigue," he told AFP.
But like other pundits, O'Neil is still betting that the
offbeat Western which has swept Hollywood's awards season
and led the Oscars race from the start will still rope in
five statuettes Sunday.
It rides into the Oscars armed with a leading eight
nominations, including best picture, director, best actor
for Australia's Heath Ledger'>Heath Ledger and best supporting role

I am a young guy, and I find it sad that up until I read
about McCarthy, I seriously thought he was a bad guy.

Great point, too many of our young believe Hollyweird
