Anthony Hopkins Slams 'Superior' Stars
2006-03-08 05:27:18
"Once, my dad tried to show me some chords and I was like, 'fuck this'.
There were many times that I threw the fucking guitar and said, 'I'll never
be able to do this. I hate you. I don't want to do this.'" Anthony Hopkins
Warns Co-stars To Stay Humble.
SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS has slammed screen stars with superiority complexes,
insisting they should remember acting is "just a job".
The REMAINS OF THE DAY actor refuses to specify who he is referring to - but
he admits he has recently experienced some seriously snobbish behaviour.
He says, "I recently worked with two actors who wouldn't come out of their
trailers for some reason. Can you figure that out?
"Or they complain because their trailers aren't big enough.
"It's a job, like any other, so don't make a big deal. Be polite, treat the
crew with respect and don't think you're different."
The star has also hit out at Hollywood for disorientating audiences by
making movies dizzyingly action-packed.
The Welsh actor insists the cinema-going public don't need to be bombarded
with aggressively edited imagery to be excited by a film.
He says, "I'm tired of the camera moving all over the place, with car chases
so cut and edited you don't know what's happening.
"Audiences aren't so mindless as movie-makers think."

Ledger 'Brando's equal'
December 13, 2005 - 10:34AM
The New York Times has dubbed Heath Ledger's portrayal of a gay cowboy in
Brokeback Mountain as equal to the greatest movie performances by Marlon
Brando and Sean Penn.
The stunning endorsement, along with many other exceptional reviews, comes
at a crucial time for the Australian and could carry him to the best actor
Oscar at the Academy Awards on March 5.
The awards season has just begun in Hollywood, so studios are looking to
build momentum for their hopefuls before the Oscars.
"Mr Ledger magically and mysteriously disappears beneath the skin of his
lean, sinewy character," NY Times critic Stephen Holden wrote.
"It is a great screen performance, as good as the best of Marlon Brando and
Sean Penn."
Another highly respected US film critic, Peter Travers, also bubbled about
Ledger's portrayal of Ennis Del Mar, a Wyoming ranch hand who falls in love
with another ranch hand, played by Jake Gyllenhaal.
"Ledger's magnificent performance is an acting miracle," Travers wrote.
"He seems to tear it from his insides. Ledger doesn't just know how Ennis
moves, speaks and listens; he knows how he breathes.
"To see him inhale the scent of a shirt hanging in Jack's closet is to take
measure of the pain of love lost."
Ledger's reviews for Brokeback Mountain are in contrast to the boos critics
yelled at him for recent roles in Brothers Grimm and Ned Kelly.
Brokeback Mountain opened in selected cinemas in the US on Friday and is
scheduled to open in Australia on January 26.
While the film has received some early support in minor awards, the first
big test for Ledger comes on Tuesday when the Golden Globes nominations are
announced.
Despite being judged by just 80 or so members of the Hollywood Foreign Press
Association (HFPA) - in comparison the Oscars are judged by about 6000
voters - the Golden Globes are given enormous weight in Hollywood.
A Golden Globe nomination and win are used by the film studios and
distributors to flog a film over the Christmas holidays.
A Golden Globe snub can halt a film or actor's Oscar campaign in its tracks.
Australia has three strong chances in the Globes' best actor in a drama
category with Ledger, Eric Bana (Munich) and Russell Crowe (Cinderella Man).
Bana's Munich is directed by Steven Spielberg, a favourite of the HFPA and
the Academy.
Munich, about the 1972 terrorist attack on the Munich Olympics which killed
11 Israeli athletes, is Spielberg's first heavy drama since 1993's
Schindler's List, which won him a Globe and Oscar.
Bana plays an Israeli Mossad agent charged with tracking down and
assassinating the Palestinian terrorists.
Viewers of early Munich screenings gave Bana's performance a mixed review
and said it was nowhere near the quality of Ledger's performance.
Of great interest will be if Crowe gains a nod from Golden Globes voters.
The New Zealand-born actor's phone throwing incident in a Manhattan hotel
foyer could cost him a Globe nomination and a chance to fire up his Oscar
campaign.
Universal Pictures has not given up, filling major US newspapers with large
ads plugging Crowe's role as Depression-era heavyweight boxing champion,
James Braddock.
Naomi Watts is Australia's only strong chance for an actress nomination for
King Kong.
Watts, playing the actress Ann Darrow who falls for a giant gorilla, gave a
performance "played with heart and panache", according to the Chicago
Tribune.
Other potential Australian Globes film nominees include Geoffrey Rush for
his supporting role in Munich, Toni Collette for supporting actress in In
Her Shoes, and Roger Donaldson for directing Anthony Hopkins in The World's
Fastest Indian.
The Golden Globes also honour television.
Julian McMahon was nominated for best actor in a drama series last year for
Nip/Tuck and this year is a strong chance to get another invite. He will
most likely face up with Without a Trace's Anthony LaPaglia.

Ex Alcoholic Anthony Hopkins Reveals His Fears
November 19, 2005, 12:33:56
FORMER ALCOHOLIC HOPKINS FEARED 'KILLING SOMEONE'
SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS still recalls his drinking days in the 1970s with
horror - as he feared he would "kill somebody" without realising.
The Welsh actor alienated himself from Hollywood life with his alcoholism,
which peaked when he was drinking a bottle of tequila every day.
Speaking in new biography ANTHONY HOPKINS: A THREE ACT LIFE, written by
MICHAEL FEENEY CALLAN, he says, "I wasn't so much a heavy drinker as a lousy
drinker. I'd drink anything that was going but I couldn't take it.
"I used to space out and hallucinate. I was a lunatic, very hyper and manic.
"I was driving over the canyons, blacking out, not knowing where I was
going. In the mornings I would wonder - did I kill somebody? - and would
check the front of the car."

Anthony Hopkins to get DeMille Award
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif (AP) - Anthony Hopkins will receive the Cecil B.
DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the 63rd annual Golden Globe
awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association said Wednesday.
Nominated for six Golden Globes since 1978, Hopkins is arguably the greatest
living film actor, said Philip Berk, president of the press association.
"It's a choice I am particularly proud of," Berk said. "It's an honour to us
as well as to him."
Hopkins won an Oscar for his performance in The Silence of the Lambs. He
will receive the award at the Golden Globes ceremony Jan. 16, 2006.
Meanwhile, Dakota Johnson, daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, was
named Miss Golden Globe.
She's the first daughter of a former Miss Golden Globe to be selected and
the first honoree to have two Golden Globe-winning parents. The honour
traditionally goes to the daughter of a well-known celebrity.
Griffith, daughter of actress Tippi Hedren, was selected in 1975.

Banderas rides again as Zorro
By JIM SLOTEK -- Toronto Sun
LOS ANGELES -- Some sequels seem fated by unconscious acts. Antonio
Banderas, for example, kept his sword from 1998's The Mask Of Zorro. Why,
he's not sure.
"I didn't practise very much during seven years. We (he and wife Melanie
Griffith) didn't have an intruder in the house or anything like that," he
says, talking up his return to the mask and cape in the long-delayed
followup The Legend Of Zorro.
"It is true that swordfighting is like riding a bicycle, once you do it, you
never forget. But you do have to refresh. We have new choreographies. It is
a dance. A dance with an edge -- and that edge is potentially very
dangerous.
"It was much more painful this time because I'm 45. And when you crash, your
bones start telling you you're 45. But also this movie is harder than the
first in other aspects."
These days it's hard to tell what 45 is supposed to look like. But the fit,
tanned guy in jeans and denim shirt sitting in front of me is hardly a case
study in middle age, despite what his bones say.
He is correct, however, about The Legend Of Zorro being a bigger fish. It
was a sequel that seemed to not want to happen, despite the original's $200
million box office and obvious audience appreciation of Banderas as Don
Alejandro de la Vega (a.k.a. Zorro, the swashbuckling hero of old
California) and a then-unknown Catherine Zeta-Jones as his fiery leading
lady Elena Montero. Money talked some more in the form of DVD sales, to the
extent that the exec producers (among them a guy named Steven Spielberg)
decided to make it happen.
With nearly double the budget of the original (some of it to pay the much
higher salary commanded these days by the Oscar-winning Zeta-Jones), The
Legend Of Zorro has more of everything, including sword fights, explosions,
runaway trains and evil villains -- bent this time on bringing the U.S. to
its knees.
"There is a moment you feel the movies don't belong to you anymore,"
Banderas says. "They belong to the audience. And a movie like this, the
audience is the one that decided in the end if there is to be a sequel or
not.
"There were many of the same people, not only the people in front of the
camera, but the same cinematographer, the same art director, the same
casting director. It was kind of a family thing."
A family thing indeed. In this movie, Alejandro and Elena are now married
and have produced a 10-year-old mini-Zorro, a son Joaquin, played by Mexican
child actor Adrian Alonso (the movie was shot in San Luis Potosi, Mexico).
Unlike the original, in which villains -- notably Anthony Hopkins -- were
dispatched by stabbing thrusts, there is no bloodshed in this movie, the
better to snare that elusive PG rating.
It's in keeping with Banderas' family-man image these days. After all, the
Spanish-born actor -- who has a young daughter, Stella, from his nine-year
marriage to Melanie Griffith -- was a big hit as a thickly accented,
swashbuckling Puss In Boots in Shrek 2. He's already at work reprising the
character in Shrek 3, and depending on how that does at the box office,
there are talks to give Puss his own movie.
"The fact that for me, who arrived in this country 16 years ago without
speaking the language, that they want to use me just for my voice, kind of
makes me proud somehow," Banderas says.
"My daughter definitely prefers Puss In Boots. But when we were watching
Zorro, she was elbowing me all the time and saying, 'Is that you, Popi?' And
every time it's a stunt (with a stuntman), so of course I say, 'Yes!' "
Which is not to say that his entire career will be PG. Banderas, whose wife
starred in his directorial debut (1999's Crazy In Alabama), will be taking
to the chair again to direct El Camino de los Ingleses. The movie will shoot
next month in Spain with an all-Spanish cast.
"Spanish actors, Spanish production, everything's Spanish," says the actor,
who was first noticed in raunchy Pedro Almodovar films like Tie Me Up! Tie
Me Down!
"I need to do it. I have been so much out of the Spanish film for a while,
they didn't feel good about my persona of just working in America all the
time. It was like a duty. It is harder, darker, more sexual than the movies
I have done here."
He's also wrapping up co-starring in the dark indie film Bordertown for
director Gregory Nava, again filming in Mexico -- this time with Jennifer
Lopez.
"I play a Mexican journalist investigating murders, and she's also a
(Latina) journalist but she wants to be American and grows her hair blond,
the kind I have seen in this country. At the end she has to recognize her
origins and meld with that."
Also in the works, a Broadway musical version of the Johnny Depp movie Don
Juan DeMarco. "The plan is to do it using music written (for the film) by
Michael Kamen, he's dead now unfortunately, and Bryan Adams. I would go to
hell for (director) David Leveaux," Banderas says of the man who directed
him to a Tony Award nomination in 2003 in Nine: The Musical.
"What I have learned over the years, is so vast. So many things happened in
my life, my personal life, from directing my first movie to going to
Broadway. I have done practically every genre, horror movies like Interview
With A Vampire, (movie) musicals like Evita, many things, it is true. It
gives me some kind of vertigo to think all this happened from the first time
I step in this country.
"I don't think it's over, I keep going, working, I feel better than ever."

Hopkins to star as Hemingway in 'Papa'
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - Anthony Hopkins will star as Ernest Hemingway
in Papa, to be directed by Roger Donaldson.
Donaldson said the film will be based on Hemingway's encounter with Denne
Bart Petitclerc, America's youngest war correspondent in the Korean War, who
was inspired by how Hemingway reported on the Spanish Civil War.
"Hemingway invited him to Havana for some weekends and the movie is really
about what happens when he goes there," Donaldson told the Dominion Post
newspaper in Tuesday's editions. "It's a thriller, it's a love story, it's
Hemingway as he falls apart and is suicidal. This guy was a witness to it
all."
"It's a pretty ambitious movie for what it is ... Hemingway is a great
writer and a great character. If anybody can play Hemingway, Tony Hopkins
can," Donaldson said.
In researching the movie, Donaldson said he visited Hemingway's Havana home
and met Cuban leader Fidel Castro.
Papa will be an independent film, Donaldson said. He is still working to
secure financing.
The director was in Wellington to promote The World's Fastest Indian, also
starring Hopkins.

Hopkins' Tequila Hallucinations
Sir Anthony Hopkins became so hooked on alcohol he suffered severe
hallucinations. The Oscar winner has been clean and sober for 30 years after
battling alcoholism. During darker times, in the early 1970s, Hopkins
developed a particular penchant for strong Mexican spirit tequila - which
stirred up strange side-effects. He says, "I was really sort of on a
prolonged acid trip. I saw things and had peculiar quasi-religious
experiences. I thought I was John The Baptist, and I would talk to the sea
at Malibu and the sea would talk back to me. It was weird."

Paltrow no-show in Venice after plane problems
Mon Sep 5, 2005 8:23 AM ET
VENICE (Reuters) - Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow failed to show up at
the Venice Film Festival as expected on Monday after her plane was turned
around having left New York the previous evening, she said.
Speaking via mobile phone at a news conference for her latest movie "Proof,"
Paltrow said she had an "extraordinarily unpleasant evening," trying, and
ultimately failing, to get to the lagoon city in time.
"I had an absolutely, extraordinarily unpleasant evening last night trying
to get there. I had all kinds of plane problems ... but I was very, very
sorry not to be with you. It was going to be the highlight of my summer,"
she told reporters.
She did not specify what problems the plane had, but a festival
representative chairing the news conference described it as a "technical
hitch" that forced the aircraft to return to New York.
In "Proof," Paltrow stars alongside Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal in
an adaptation of David Auburn's play of the same name.
