Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart has admitted she suffered from
anorexia while filming the hit law firm TV comedy.
After years of claiming her skinny figure was due to being
"small-boned" the actress has finally revealed gruelling work schedules
and the stress of finishing the show, which was axed in 2002, made her
stop wanting to eat.
At one point her weight plummeted to under 45 kilograms (seven stone).
Flockhart says, "At the time of all that, I was seriously stressed. I
was working 15 hour days on the set and then I was dealing with the end
of the show, which was basically my life.
"I started under-eating, over-exercising, pushing myself too hard and
brutalising my immune system. I guess I just didn't find time to eat.
"I am much more healthy these days."

Look at the footage she posed for in "Sirens," and then look at the
photos she posed for before Ally McBeal, and you'll see that she was
anorexic well before she made that tv show. It's jusy that her anorexia
got severely worse on the show, because the girls were all goading each
other to eat less.

De Rossi Blames 'Ally McBeal' for Eating Disorder
Actress Portia De Rossi developed anorexia while starring in "Ally McBeal,"
because she used co-star Calista Flockhart and the other thin women on the
show as her role models.
The actress hit her lowest point in 1999, when she starved herself down to a
life-threatening 82 pounds.
She reveals in the April issue of Vogue magazine, "I've often wondered if I
wasn't on that show if it (anorexia) may not have happened.
"I didn't really know at that point what it was like to be a celebrity, and
the only people I knew at the time who had a similar experience were these
women whom I worked with.
"They became my role models."
The actress decided to come clean about her anorexia with the help of her
girlfriend, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.
She adds, "We've talked a lot about this. I'm not proud of this struggle.
"(While anorexic) it just seemed like I literally wanted to disappear. And
now I would like to reappear."

Harrison Ford on self-hate
Harrison Ford ..."psychologically you begin to hate yourself".

Hollywood sex symbol Harrison Ford comes across as serious and somewhat
guarded.
With more than 40 years in the spotlight, the film star rarely talks about
his personal life and has learnt to deflect such questions with ease.
So it's surprising when the 63-year-old offers a candid insight,
unexpectedly confessing to having moments where he hates himself.
In Australia to promote his movie Firewall, Harrison concedes he gets sick
of talking about himself - and says that, after so many times answering the
same questions, he starts feeling like a fraud.
"After a while when you have repeated yourself so many times you begin to
feel like a liar, like a fraud," said Harrison, who is in Australia with
fiancee Calista Flockhart and her adopted son Liam.
"Just psychologically you begin to hate yourself.
"It begins to sound like you are being fraudulent and I hate that."
Harrison is apparently more comfortable in front of the camera.
In Firewall, a thriller, he plays Jack Stanfield - a husband, father and
head of security for a global bank.
A computer whizz, Stanfield is forced to hack into his business to pay a
$185 million ransom to free his kidnapped family.
Exploring bank vaults and getting inside the mind of banking experts was
something Ford enjoyed while preparing for his role.
"That's the wonderful thing about an actor's life and working in the
business," he said.
"You have the opportunity to explore other people's lives.
"I spent time with banking professionals and software designers, which
allowed me to see what these guys do when they go to work, what they looked
like, what their offices look like and what it's like backstage in the
vault."
Ford said he was proud of the finished product, and if he wasn't he would be
still working on it.
But he dismisses suggestions that he is a perfectionist.
"I try as hard as anybody to get it right, but you can't be a perfectionist
in this business," he said.
"There are just too many other people involved and you don't do everything
yourself. You have to recognise when you have achieved an appropriate
ambition.
"Then it's time to get on down the road because you have to get it right
quick in this business."
In the film, which stars Sideways star Virginia Madsen as Ford's wife and
Master and Commander's Paul Bettany as the villain, Ford is involved in
bloody fight scenes.
No stunt doubles were used.
"I don't think any of what I did qualifies as a stunt - it's physical
acting," he said.
"We arranged the fights so it was possible for actors to do it because the
audience prefers to see an actor's face rather than the back of a stunt
man's head."
So were these scenes physically demanding for the ageing star and how did he
get in shape for such strenuous work?
"It's fun," he said.
"It's hard work and you work up a sweat, but I do a little more training
when I have a movie that has a physical aspect to it.
"I am not much of a gym buff and I prefer physical work than exercise. But I
do play tennis, I like tennis."
Ford says there is plenty he still wants to do but "I don't know it's name
right now".
For the time being he is happy doing what he loves - acting - and hopes to
be doing it for a long while.
"I would be very happy to fill my life with much of the same (making
movies)," he said.
"I enjoy my work and the challenge of it and the people I get to work with."
The screen veteran has several films in development including
science-fiction thriller Godspeed, political thriller Manhunt and the next
eagerly awaited instalment in the Indiana Jones franchise.

Like Callista, Holly Hunter is another endomorph and has a naturally
slight frame.
Lindsay lost weight because her party animal habits ran out of control,
but she's tacitly admitted her problem to the public and stopped doing
it.
Although not chubby per se, as a teen Ricci had enough weight to bury
her figure. She had to do something to bring out the curves and paid
the price for it.
Starlets should lose weight under the care of a doctor, not by
themselves.

I'm starting to think that the Lollipop Head Syndrome (i.e., losing too
much weight for their bone structure and body type) is the latest trend
in Hollywood. Some women, like Calista Flockhart and Lara Flynn Boyle,
are meant to be skinny, although they shouldn't be as emaciated as LFB
allowed herself to become after she and Nicholson broke up. Others,
like Jennifer Aniston, Brittany Murphy, Holly Hunter, Nicole Richie,
Lindsay Lohan, Christina Ricci and Angelina Jolie, look just plain
awful. I thought that Angelina lost weight for a movie role; however,
the weight loss seemed to coincide with the trip to Ethiopia to adopt

The skinny on the stars
Lindsay Lohan to Nicole Richie: What's putting young Hollywood in the
thick of ultra-thin?
By Rachel Leibrock -- Bee Staff Writer
Published 2:15 am PDT Tuesday, June 7, 2005
In Hollywood, as the saying goes, you can never be too rich or too
thin.
But, when does thin stop being in and start being life-threatening?
Every few years, speculation on skinny starlets intensifies. In the
mid '90s, the focus was on actresses such as Calista Flockhart; today,
Lindsay Lohan is the latest tabloid fodder. Recent photographs of the
young star - who will appear in the upcoming film "Herbie: Fully
Loaded" (opening June 22) - show a much thinner actress than those
from a year ago. Not only is Lohan's famous red hair gone - replaced
by platinum locks - but so are her curves.
The talk goes beyond gossip and takes on a serious tone when you
factor in that more young girls than ever are striving to get thin.
According to the National Eating Disorders Association, most girls who
develop an eating disorder are 11 to 13 years old at its onset. It can
develop even sooner: 51 percent of 9-and-10-year-old girls say they
"feel better" about themselves if they are on a diet.
The problem goes beyond the numbers, however, with a frightening
culture that has built up around the issue: for example, the "Pro-Ana"
Web sites that promote bulimic or anorexic behaviors and dieting. And
some teens wear special bracelets and necklaces, sold online, to
signal their extreme dieting efforts.
Indeed, there's a real "body image crisis" among teen girls, says
Susan Schulz, executive editor for CosmoGIRL magazine.
One wonders how much of that is precipitated by the images of thin
actresses.
Of course, the 18-year-old Lohan is not the only notably skinny
starlet. Last June, just days after her 18th birthday, Mary-Kate Olsen
entered rehab to treat an alleged eating disorder. Now, a year later,
the former "Full House" star is still causing concern for her
alarmingly slight figure.
Hollywood observers also have taken note of Lohan's good pal Nicole
Richie, who credits her recent figure transformation to a "healthier"
lifestyle.
Lohan, who stands 5-foot-7 and weighs an estimated 112 pounds, has
blamed her weight loss on everything from hormones and an October
hospitalization for "exhaustion" to "good, old-fashioned exercise."
Although she denies there's a real problem, Lohan's family recently
told US Weekly magazine that the actress plans to spend her summer
finding a "happy medium" for her weight.
So, what's up? Lohan poked fun at herself when she hosted a recent
episode of "Saturday Night Live" ("I gotta take better care of
myself," she said when faced with her haggard-looking "future self,"
as played by Amy Poehler), but experts and trend-watchers say it's no
joke.
"What's most shocking about this trend is that you have young girls
with normal figures who start to lose weight after they become famous
and achieve a certain level of awareness in Hollywood," says Danielle
Stern, associate editor for Radar, a New York-based pop-culture
magazine.
In other words, what once was good for getting them attention, film
roles and fashion spreads is suddenly not good enough.
In Lohan's case, Stern says, the concern centers on the fact that the
actress's weight loss seemed "very sudden and extreme."
Still, Cheryl Dellasega, a Penn State professor of medicine and
humanities who specializes in eating disorders, isn't convinced that
Lohan's problem is serious - yet.
Lohan seems comfortable in her own skin, says Dellasega, author of
"The Starving Family" and "The Girl Wars."
"She's still wearing form-fitting clothes and she doesn't look
emaciated," she says. "Lindsay seems like she's still the same
person."
The same goes for Richie, Dellasega adds, noting that Richie's weight
loss came at a gradual pace and was accompanied by a slow shift to a
classier, "more polished" look than the one that made her famous as
one of the stars of "The Simple Life" reality show.
But while Richie's image may benefit from her transformation, Lohan
might not be so lucky. Some observers think the actress's weight loss
could eat away at her fan base as well as her body.
"Lindsay is viewed as a sex symbol and she's really popular with men,"
says Lori Majewski, executive editor for US Weekly. "Now that she's
lost her (curves), she's also lost part of her sex appeal and she may
not have that big of a male following anymore."
Lohan stands to alienate her younger female fan base, as well.
Schulz, the CosmoGIRL editor, says many readers resent a thin-is-in
message.
"We definitely get a lot of girls complaining about skinny models,"
Schulz says.
While teens remain interested in Mary-Kate Olsen - "They grew up with
her and are pulling for her," Schulz adds - girls may be turned off by
both Lohan's allegedly wild party behavior and her rapidly
disappearing figure.
But losing fans should be the least of Lohan's weight-related
concerns, experts say.
Vulnerable self-esteem and age, plus Hollywood pressure, may be bigger
threats to Lohan's health, suggests Kristina Johnson, executive editor
of Women's Health magazine.
"She's young and impressionable, and there are a lot of stereotypical
expectations that Hollywood promotes within that age group," Johnson
says, on the phone from her Manhattan office.
As for Lohan's influence on fans, Johnson says, most women don't want
to be as thin as Lohan or some of her celebrity colleagues.
Instead of seeing rail-thin stars as an ideal body type, women tend to
admire the lean, toned figures on celebrities such as Drew Barrymore,
who recently credited her weight loss to exercise.
"Women are interested in being physically fit with an emphasis on also
being healthy," Johnson says. "The older you get, the less you buy
into the propaganda of having to look a certain way. (And) there are
plenty of actresses who set a good example and send a strong message
when it comes to health."
Meanwhile, there are signs that Lohan - or at least those around her -
might be getting the message.
In the June 13 issue of US Weekly, Lohan's mother, Dina, outlined her
daughter's summer plans to get healthy by taking time off, exercising
and eating better.
"When you're young, you can go a little too far - she's like any teen,
finding her own way," Dina Lohan told the magazine.
Lindsay Lohan will need her family's support because the entertainment
industry won't give it, Majewski says.
"Hollywood tends to turn a blind eye. Someone would have to waste away
before they'll admit someone is too thin."

Harrison's son in drugs rehab
08:32am 24th September 2004
Harrison Ford: Helping son through drugs treatment
Harrison Ford's teenage son is having treatment to curb an addiction to
marijuana.
Malcolm Ford, 17, has been going to a rehabilitation clinic in Los Angeles
for the past year.
His father, star of the Indiana Jones and Star Wars films, often accompanies
him to the therapy sessions, which he attends several times a week.
Ford and his former wife Melissa Mathison enrolled their son in the
programme last year when he turned 16.
The couple divorced this year after separating in 2001, and Malcolm is said
to have been deeply affected by their split - an issue which has been
discussed in rehab.
A friend of the family said: "The kid had a big marijuana problem and the
programme is specifically tailored to adolescents with addiction.
"At first Malcolm was attending the programme four days a week, with each
daily session costing about £80. On several of these occasions the parents
of the teenagers enrolled also showed support to their kids.
"Everyone introduces themselves. Malcolm would get up and say, "My name is
Malcolm and I am a drug addict".
"Then Harrison would get up and say, 'My name is Harrison and I'm here to
support my son Malcolm'."
Ford, 62, often attended the sessions with his former wife, although
onlookers said they looked far from comfortable together.
"You could clearly see the tension between them," said one.
"They both looked very uncomfortable playing a couple.
"Melissa still seems to be very hurt and bitter about Harrison leaving her
and taking up with Calista Flockhart."
Ford and Miss Flockhart, star of Ally McBeal, have been a couple for three
years and share a house in Los Angeles.
But the 39-year-old actress is thought to have been banned from accompanying
her boyfriend to Malcolm's therapy sessions on the instructions of Miss
Mathison.
"I was told that when Malcolm suggested that Calista should come to his
therapy sessions, his mother said no,' the family friend said.
Ford and Miss Mathison are said to have clashed over issues raised during
the meetings, such as who their son should remain friends with.
"Last year Malcolm and Georgia when on holiday to Harrison's Wyoming ranch
with their mother," said the family friend.
While they were there, Malcolm spent some time with one of his old friends
who he used to smoke marijuana with.
"Therapists always advise people seeking treatment to avoid contact with
people who may cause them to stray again - and Harrison agrees with that. He
went mad when he discovered about this incident."
Miss Mathison, a screenwriter, won an estimated £50million settlement in her
divorce from Ford, one of the biggest such deals ever awarded in Hollywood.
Ford agreed to split future royalty earnings from films he had made during
