Beyonce eclipsed by Darkness
by LAURA BENJAMIN, MARK REYNOLDS and NICOLE LAMPERT, Daily Mail
It was the night when a man in a feather-trimmed catsuit hijacked the show.
Justin Hawkins and his band The Darkness eclipsed the glamour of stars such
as Beyonce Knowles and Scarlett Johansson at last night's Brit awards.
They took three honours and put on a flamboyant performance which harked
back to the heyday of Seventies rock.
Arriving with a posse of greasy Hell's Angels motorcyclists, the four
rockers from Lowestoft - unlikely stars in the modern era of manufactured
pop - were undoubted kings of the Brits.
They won best British album for Permission To Land, best British group and
best British rock act.
And their performance of their hit I Believe In A Thing Called Love won the
biggest cheers from the crowd at London's Earls Court Arena as they wrapped
up the awards.
Dressed in a silver feathered skintight bodysuit, 28-year-old Hawkins was
suspended above the stage on a silver plinth before emerging to greet his
fans.
Victory for The Darkness
Earlier, as he received the best British group award, Hawkins said: "I have
to say we probably are the best British group. It's a real privilege, a
tremendous honour and a great opportunity."
The Darkness's victory was even more surprising considering that the band
was almost unheard of this time last year.
Over the last 12 months they have built up a huge fanbase with their
no-holds-barred performances, initially supporting bands such as Def
Leppard, before becoming a major act in their own right.
Before the awards had even begun, Hawkins promised it would be a night to
remember.
"We're going to do something different because we can. We're going to make
sure the Darkness totally rock the Brits," he said.
Dido was named best British female solo artist and won the best single
category for White Flag, a love song which is said to be about her
ex-boyfriend.
Dido named Best British Female
The awards for best breakthrough act and best pop act went to Busted, who
performed a rousing rendition of The Undertones' Teenage Kicks.
And heartthrob Justin Timberlake also went home with two awards, for best
international male and best international album for Justified.
He told the crowd: "Wow, two in one night, thank you. This is awesome.
"This is only my first record so you guys stick with me - we've got
depression and drug addiction to go through!"
Timberlake, 23, who last year famously grabbed Kylie Minogue's bottom during
a raunchy performance and two weeks ago exposed Janet Jackson's breast while
singing a duet at the Super Bowl, was better behaved this time.
He also presented the outstanding contribution award to Eighties pop stars
Duran Duran.
Scarlett Johansson was there
The band - Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and Andy, Roger and John Taylor -
reunited last year after 15 years apart for a series of small gigs.
Although they also picked up a lifetime achievement award at last year's MTV
music awards, they are currently without a record deal.
They performed a medley of their hits last night.
Beyonce Knowles, who sang her song Crazy In Love with rappers Outkast, wowed
the audience in a £10,000 Roberto Cavalli dress encrusted with diamonds
worth £250,000.
But the 22-year-old, who won five American Grammy awards last week, had to
be satisfied with only one prize, for best international female.
And there was a strong sense of deja vu when Scarlett Johansson - named best
actress at the Baftas on Sunday - arrived in another Cavalli creation, a
tassled gold mini dress.
Unfortunately for the 19-yearold American, who is currently starring in Lost
In Translation and Girl With A Pearl Earring, it was the same dress worn by
Britney Spears at a music awards ceremony in Cannes last month.
Last night's show, which was recorded two-and-a-half hours before being
shown on ITV, was beset by technical problems.
The audience became increasingly frustrated at the extended intervals
between performances as staff tried to get equipment in place.
And there was a five-minute delay as host Cat Deeley tried to speak by
satellite link to Daniel Bedingfield, named best British male artist.
The 24-year-old singer is currently in New Zealand where he is recovering
from severe head and neck injuries he received in a car crash.
The singer, who lives in Dulwich, South-East London, found fame two years
ago with his debut single Gotta Get Thru This, which he recorded in his
bedroom after repeatedly being turned down by record labels.
Last year's ban on alcohol at the event - which had been imposed after
outrageous behaviour by several stars at earlier ceremonies - was lifted.
To emphasise the "booze is back" theme, Miss Deeley arrived on stage
straddling a giant champagne bottle and dressed in top hat and thigh high
boots.
White Stripes won Best International Group
Other winners last night included Fame Academy runnerup Lemar, who was named
best urban act, while the best dance act category was won by Basement Jaxx.
White Stripes, the American band featuring Jack White and his ex-wife, were
named best international group.
Controversial rapper 50 Cent was named best international breakthrough
artist and ended his performance of hit song In Da Club with two loud
bangs - reminiscent of gunshots - amid fireworks.
The New York-born singer, real name Curtis Jackson, claims he has been shot
nine times while growing up.
He began his performance with a pre-recorded video featuring policemen
arresting him at an airport - mirroring the time he was detained in
connection with a gangland shooting in America at Heathrow last year.
He was released without charge.
There was also a performance from Black Eyed Peas of their second hit Shut
Up, while young jazz sensation Jamie Cullum and Katie Melua duetted on The
Cure's 1980's hit Love Cats.
And soul singer Alicia Keys joined rapper Missy Elliott and No Doubt singer
Gwen Stefani to perform a cover of Prince's classic hit Kiss - a rendition
which generated one of the biggest rounds of applause.
Among the celebrity presenters at the event were LL Cool J, who handed over
the award for international female solo artist, Lionel Richie, Shania Twain,
comedian Avid Merrion and Radio One breakfast show host Chris Moyles.

Pitt and Aniston top best-dressed poll
Hollywood super-couple Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston have topped a poll to
name the best dressed man and woman in showbiz respectively.
Pitt beat out competition from soccer superstar David Beckham, who came
second in the survey for British magazine Company. Beckham previously topped
the poll in 2002 and 2003.
Cold Mountain actor Jude Law was voted into third place.
Beckham's ex-Spice Girl wife Victoria came second in the female style icon
list, behind Aniston.
Third best dressed woman is UK TV presenter Cat Deeley.
Editor Victoria White says: "Brad and Jen rarely make a fashion mistake
whether they are strolling down the red carpet or along the beach their
outfits always compliment each other.
"They wear very simple and classic clothes. They never seem to feel the need
to outshine one another, not something you can say about many Hollywood
couples."
