Mekeisha Madden Toby wrote in the April 13 Detroit News:
Justin Bartha isn't a household name just yet, but the 26-year-old
actor and star of NBC's sitcom "Teachers" (9:30 p.m. EDT Tuesdays) is
working on it.
Just last month Bartha, who grew up in West Bloomfield Township,
starred opposite Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey in the
romantic comedy "Failure to Launch." Before that, he was in a stinker
flick called "Gigli." (Yeah, that's right, the one with Ben Affleck
and Jennifer Lopez.)
Hopefully, Bartha will be able to put Bennifer behind him with this
summer's romantic dramedy "Trust the Man," in which he stars alongside
Julianne Moore, David Duchovny and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Here's what Bartha had to say during a phone chat from his New York
home:
On "Teachers," the sitcom: "I love the show. I love making it and
watching it. 'Teachers' is a charming show with great potential. I
think we can do a lot more with it. As of right now, everything is
coming together and every episode gets better with each actor getting
to know who they are as a character. It feels like we know these
characters. So far we've taped six shows, and we'll know in May if we
get picked up."
On whether he could be a teacher: "I don't know if I would want that
responsibility. My conscience would weigh on me. But I can imagine
that the knowledge that some student gets it would be as addictive as
knowing when something resonates with the audience. It's the best
feeling."
On growing up in West Bloomfield Township: "I moved to West Bloomfield
when I was 9. I went to West Bloomfield High School and all that, but
I never felt like it was home. I never got into the Detroit teams, and
I never got into Vernors. I hate Vernors. I'm sure no one cares. My
family doesn't live there anymore. If I were to come to Detroit right
now and jump on stage, it would be like, 'Hello, Detroit!' and
everyone, with the exception of like one teacher, would be like, 'Who
the heck is that guy?'"

HOLLYWOOD heart-throb Matthew McConaughey revealed yesterday that shovelling
chicken poo on the Central Coast helped shape his mega-star career.
Ray Crocker recalls a lot of horse manure shovelling as well. McConaughey
stayed with Mr Crocker and his late wife Eileen at their Warnervale property
during a Rotary exchange 17 years ago.
"I don't think I'd be here today if I hadn't taken that first year off. I
didn't know what I wanted to do with my life," 36-year-old McConaughey said
yesterday.
"I interviewed for a Rotary exchange program and picked a country that spoke
English and went to Australia for a year."
The Texan, who commands $15 million a movie, recalled how to get to
Warnervale.
"I lived in a place on the other side of Newcastle. On the other side of
Newcastle is Toukley. On the other side of Toukley is Gorokan," he said.
"Then on the other side of Gorokan is Warnervale, population 395, about 2˝
hours outside of Sydney. I always had a wanderlust and I wanted to take a
year off to go take an adventure - and it was an adventure."
The man who hosted McConaughey revealed yesterday that, had it not been for
a phone call from his son, the movie star may never have made it Down Under.
"Matthew had missed out on a spot and my son was in Texas and called my wife
and asked if there was anything we could do to help," Mr Crocker told The
Saturday Daily Telegraph.
"I rang Rotary and they said if we were willing to host him, he could come
out.
"He arrived here a few weeks later."
McConaughey - whose movie Failure to Launch is previewed in Sydney next
week - spent five months with the Crockers, spending time helping the family
with chores.
"He got right in and played his bit. I recall there was also a bit of horse
poo shovelling," Mr Crocker, 66, recalled.
During an interview with TV host Rove McManus in 2003, McConaughey sent a
message to Mrs Crocker, who was ill in hospital. Mr Crocker said the call
lifted his wife's spirit, but she died a few months later.
He said yesterday McConaughey's success was a testament to his wife's ethos
and the way the family lived.
"We've always been community-minded and love helping people. A caring,
loving family - that's what our household has always been about," he said.
Wyong Mayor Bob Graham said it was great McConaughey remembered his time in
Warnervale and invited him to return to the area for a visit.
"All the girls in the office are madly in love with him," Mr Graham said.

Doubt it was Sir Ian. He would have guys coming to *him*.
It could be Allan Cummings (Nightcrawler) who was in the 2nd movie only, but
wouldn't be in the 3rd.
But I think it might be James Marsden (Cyclops) who while generally keeping
a low profile has been in several gay independent films. Not that means he is,

I was surprised to see these two on a movie poster in a romantic

Why 'Sex in the City' movie didn't happen

NEW YORK -- There will be no big-screen Sex in the City.

dismantled and sold. The wardrobe is gone. There are nothing but memories
left."
She doesn't even pretend it wasn't Kim Cattrall who put the brakes on a
feature film.
"It's true, everyone was on board for the film except Kim."
She's a little more cautious when asked why Cattrall, who played catty,
vampy Samantha, refused to participate.
"I was led to believe there were a number of reasons. It wasn't just a case
of money, but I'm not certain exactly what all those reasons were.
"You have to respect someone's choice to want to move on in their life."
Though Sex in the City gave Parker's career an enormous boost, she's not
looking for another TV series any time soon.
"If I'd wanted to continue doing TV I'd have done more seasons of Sex in the
City," she says.
"TV is too demanding and I want to spend more time with my son. He's almost
three now and he needs me. Films are less of a commitment."
Nor does Parker see herself doing a Broadway show.
"That would take me away from my son every night for months. That's even
worse than the daytime commitment of a TV series."
On March 10, Parker will be seen starring opposite Matthew McConaughey in
the romantic comedy Failure to Launch.
She has already completed the race relations drama Spinning into Butter with
Beau Bridges and Miranda Richardson.

Dallas snub enough to make JR an honest man
By Catherine Elsworth in Los Angeles
February 22, 2006
IT IS a betrayal as galling as anything cooked up by J.R.Ewing, the arch
schemer of the 1980s soap opera Dallas.
The Texan oil city that spawned the sex-filled drama could be ignored as a
backdrop for a big-screen update of the soap in favour of Florida or
Louisiana.
Producers of the long-awaited film say the Lone Star State cannot compete
with the financial incentives offered elsewhere.
And as much as they would love to film in the Big D, budget pressures are
forcing them to look further afield, including Jacksonville, Florida, where
producers recently approached the city's film commission.
"We're not out to try to steal Dallas from Texas," said Paul Sirmons, the
Florida state film commissioner. "They came to us."
He said the state offered an enviable refund of 15 per cent of all money
spent on location up to a budget of $US2 million ($2.7 million).
"Also, the actor being cast for the lead, John Travolta, lives in Florida,"
Mr Sirmons said. "And the person who designed or built Southfork [the Ewing
ranch] built a duplicate near Jacksonville."
The loss of the production would not only be a slap in the face for Dallas
but deprive the city of about $US30 million, which the filmmakers are
expected to spend on site.
As well as Travolta as JR, the role originally played by Larry Hagman,
Catherine Zeta-Jones is tipped to revive Victoria Principal's Pam Ewing,
while the Texan native Matthew McConaughey is tipped to be Bobby Ewing.
There is even a rumour of a part for Brad Pitt.
"Honestly, Dallas was never high on the list, because it didn't seem like a
feasible, economic place to do the movie," said producer Michael Costigna,
who was also the executive producer of the award-winning Brokeback Mountain.
Janis Burklund, the head of the Dallas Film Commission, said: "It will be a
horrible black eye to the state if Dallas isn't made in Dallas."
