What a bitchy article.
I think Reese is the real deal. Some people can't handle that. I guess

Reese has an Oscar, but can she keep her husband?
by PAUL SCOTT, Daily Mail
08:44am 7th March 2006
Amid an A-list party on the roof terrace of LA's Beverly Hilton hotel, the
throng falls silent as Hollywood's newly-crowned queen makes her entrance.
Reese Witherspoon, a diminutive 5ft 2in, is barely visible behind her burly
security men.
During her fleeting appearance, only the most powerful of the Tinseltown
movers and shakers present will be granted an audience.
For despite a string of dizzy blonde roles, Miss Witherspoon is all too
aware of her formidable new position.
She has just negotiated an 18 million fee for her new movie, making her the
highest-paid female star of all time.
She beat off competition from Dame Judi Dench, Charlize Theron and Keira
Knightley to win the best actress Oscar for her bravura performance as June
Carter Cash in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line.
So few would blame the elfin-featured 29-year-old for enjoying her elevation
to the pinnacle of movie stardom, or dispute her recent announcement that
her life was "utterly blessed".
Blossoming career
One the face of it, hers is indeed a gilded existence. The southern belle
daughter of a rich doctor and professor mother, her blossoming career has
run in tandem with a seven-year marriage to the handsome actor Ryan
Phillippe and her role as devoted mother to their two children.
This picture of domestic bliss has become as synonymous with the
effervescent Miss Witherspoon as her megawatt smile and dainty pixie chin.
But this being Hollywood, this image will come under increasing scrutiny as
she settles into the role she has wrestled from Julia Roberts'>Julia Roberts as the most
bankable woman in the movie business.
Her marriage to Phillippe - who appeared in Oscar-winning Crash - has become
the subject of fevered conjecture.
Unshowbizzy wedding
They couple met when Phillippe gatecrashed her 21st birthday party in 1997.
She introduced herself to him saying: "I think you're my birthday present."
They began dating before acting together two years later in the hit comedy
Cruel Intentions - an updated teen version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
By the time the couple married the same year in a quiet and unshowbizzy
ceremony in Charleston, South Carolina, she was pregnant with their first
child.
Both were tipped to go on to become massive stars.
But while Miss Witherspoon quickly landed the role in Legally Blonde - a
film that would propel her into the big league - followed by a 10 million
pay packet for its sequel, her young husband's career stalled.
A superstar
Despite his part as a journalist masquerading as a servant in the critically
acclaimed Gos-ford Park, Phillippe had to watch as Reese became a superstar.
In 2002 when the couple jointly presented an Oscar, Phillippe pointedly
handed her the envelope and said: "After you. You make more money than I
do." It was not a joke.
At the same time, rumours spread of tension between the pair, and even
claims - strenuously denied by Phillippe - that he had cheated on her.
They went on a second honeymoon to the Caribbean in 2003 as speculation
mounted that the trip was a last-ditch attempt to save their marriage. While
they were there, Reese discovered she was expecting again.
In public she consistently denied there were problems in her marriage,
saying: "I don't listen to the gossip. Ryan is my best friend."
But she was said to be furious when he casually told an interviewer they
were attending marriage guidance counselling.
Phillippe was also said to have walked out early of a special 30th birthday
celebration she organised for him at the exclusive Nobu restaurant in
Malibu.
The couple put on a united front when Witherspoon collected a best actress
award at the Golden Globes in Hollywood six weeks ago for her role in Walk
The Line.
But Phillippe did incur the wrath of his famously prudish wife (she refuses
even to wear a bikini on screen) when he added that they planned to
celebrate her award with "hot and heavy love-making".
One diarist commented tartly: "Reese's bodyguards were there presumably to
keep her overenthused, clingy househusband Ryan Phillippe in check."
Indeed, the Mail has learnt that the actor's junior partner role was brought
into sharp relief later as he trailed behind his wife when she made her
entrance into another party - thrown by the NBC television network .
A security guard stopped him to ask for his pass. A furious Phillippe barked
back: "My wife is my pass" and barged past.
But he is openly predicting that next year will be his turn for an Oscar,
thanks to his role in the soon-to-be-released Clint Eastwood- directed war
drama Flags Of Our Fathers.
The speculation over their relationship has put something of a damper on the
announcement this week that Reese will top the list of the highest-paid
actresses with her part in Our Family Trouble, the story of a mother whose
child is possessed by demons in America's deep South.
Her fee, which includes a percentage of box office takings, is 4million
more than Oscar-winner Julia Roberts'>Julia Roberts commanded for Mona Lisa Smile in 2003.
Witherspoon's route to the top began when she started modelling as a child
and won her first role in the film The Man In The Moon when she was just 14.
Her strict parents - her father is an ear, nose and throat specialist and
her mother a professor of paediatrics - had hoped she would follow them into
medicine.
But she dropped out of college after a year to star alongside Paul Newman in
the thriller Twilight.
Roles in The Importance Of Being Earnest and her starring performance in the
100million grossing Sweet Home Alabama put her among Hollywood's top
leading ladies.
Reese's bubbly screen persona hides a sharp mind and a steely determination
succeed, not to mention a huge talent as a serious actress.
Determined
Indeed, the New York Times called her "The most determined actress of the
21st century".
She has set up her own production company, Type A Films, to keep total
control of her career.
Associates say she is acutely protective of her wholesome image and has
steadfastly refused to comment publicly on the conviction of her elder
alcoholic brother John.
He was put on two years' probation after admitting he attempted to undress a
sleeping neighbour after drunkenly entering her unlocked house.
This week, as she and Phillippe prepared for the Oscar ceremony she was
still insisting: "We have a great marriage."
Whatever the truth, few would bet against her allowing marital difficulties
to hinder her stellar career.
In her gushing Oscar acceptance speech (the longest of the night), she said:
"My grandmother was my inspiration, and she taught me to have strength and
self-respect.
"Those were qualities I saw in June Carter. . . People used to ask how she
was and she would say: 'I'm just trying to matter.' I know what she means.
I'm just trying to matter."
With an 18 million price tag per movie, she certainly matters now.

Absolutely agree with your fashion analysis. Michelle Williams always
looks like she borrowed a dress from
someone else. The clothes wear her as she is a dowdy mouse. Reese
Witherspoon was in her grandma's dress,
she used to be so chic, now matronly. Sad for such a pretty woman.
Charliese Theron was beautiful, but that bow
was overpowering even for her tall frame. Uma Therman did seem the
best looking woman last night, as did Salma Hayak and Jada Smith.
Kiera Knightly while striking had on her mother's necklace -- too old
for her face.
Best looking man hands down was George Clooney and thank god, Philip
Seymour Hoffman shaved and tucked in his shirt.
The hip-hop crew needed to park their grill look, IMHO. I'm not a hop
fan nor their style, but the energy was infectious.
Saddest boobs was Felicity Huffman but her husband, Bill Macy was sure
her best accessory and so proud. Good for them.
Reese Witherspoons's husband, Ryan Phillippe had the most pained
expression while she gave her speech. He looked fearful she would
forget to thank him.
Why does the place go crazy over Jack Nicolson? I don't get it. And
Spielberg never seems to have any sense of humor about himself.
I thought he was openly gay

Witherspoon Records Sinatra for Her Husband
Reese Witherspoon gave her husband Ryan Phillippe a very special Christmas
gift - she recorded two of his favorite Frank Sinatra tunes. The actress,
who showed off her singing skills as June Carter Cash in last year's Walk
The Line movie, recorded Sinatra classics "I've Got a Crush on You" and "The
Best Is Yet to Come" for the Crash star. And to make her gift extra special,
she asked staff at Beverly Hills, Los Angeles restaurant La Dolce Vita to
play her Sinatra renditions as the couple enjoyed a romantic pre-Christmas
dinner on 12 December, according to American magazine In Touch. A source
says, "Ryan is such a Sinatra nut, he was thrilled with the surprise."

Witherspoon sings praises of June Carter
LOUIS B. HOBSON - Calgary Sun
HOLLYWOOD -- Reese Witherspoon thinks she knows the reason the new Johnny
Cash bio-pic is called Walk The Line instead of Johnny! or The Man in Black.
"This is a movie about two people. It's the story of a love affair that was
also a great musical partnership," says Witherspoon, who plays June Carter
opposite Joaquin Phoenix's Johnny Cash.
"You don't often get to see the amazing woman behind the successful man; she
usually gets the shaft in a bio-pic. But without June there wouldn't have
been a Johnny," says Witherspoon.
Witherspoon, who has always claimed that she and Ryan Phillippe were
destined for one another, claims the same is true of Carter and Cash.
"There's no question in my mind they were destined to be together. Theirs
was not an easy relationship, but then most relationships aren't. What's
important and what the film shows is that it was a true relationship. It was
real."
Both Phoenix and Witherspoon were signed to Walk The Line 18 months before
they began filming.
"I immediately started reading everything I could get my hands on and
watching hours of tapes from the Grand Ole Opry and of the tours June was on
where she met Johnny," says Witherspoon.
"I never even met Joaquin until our first rehearsal, and then we rehearsed
for six months together."
This meant the two actors had two hours each day of vocal training with
their coaches and a four-hour recording session in a sound studio.
"We had to sing our songs over and over again each day.
"I had only seven, but Joaquin had 26. We had to get the nuances June and
Johnny brought to their songs."
She admits the recording sessions were particularly daunting.
"I'm darn good in my car and in the shower, but boy, when you get into a
recording studio, it's scary.
"Still, I grew up (in Louisiana) listening to this music. I knew how it
should sound."
Witherspoon had to learn to play the auto harp and Phoenix the guitar.
"Joaquin is a natural musician. I'm not. I used to sing my songs at home and
for anyone who came over to visit. Ryan and the children know all my songs
by heart."
Witherspoon says that before she teamed up with Cash, Carter "was
essentially the filler act between the top-billed musicians like Jerry Lee
Lewis, Elvis, Roy Orbison and Waylon Jennings.
"She was the comic relief, until Johnny made her an equal."
Witherspoon concedes that Carter and Cash were an easier fit than she and
Phoenix.
"We're not similar performers at all. Joaquin is contemplative and very
interior. I'm loud and in-your-face.
"We had some difficult times, but it was because we wanted the best for the
film."
Witherspoon says that John Carter Cash, the son of June and Johnny, is the
film's biggest fan.
"He has been effusive in his praise of Joaquin and me. It would have been so
terrible if the family hadn't liked it. I think the prospect of the movie
was scarier for them than it was for us."
She says the Cash family gave her "a couple of things of June's that were
special to them, so they are all the more special to me."

Three years ago, Reese Witherspoon starred in one of the most successful
September releases in box office history. That romantic comedy, Sweet Home
Alabama, opened to $35.6 million on its way to domestic receipts of $127.2
million for Disney. It was only natural, then, that DreamWorks would follow
a similar trajectory with their own Witherspoon rom-com, releasing it at the
same time of year in hopes of a comparable performance. Alas, this was not
to be as the box office continued in its own unpredictable way, allowing
Just Like Heaven a less-than-holy $16.5 million for its debut. DreamWorks is
certainly not saying hallelujah to this news, as studio expectations were
quite a bit higher.
Just Like Heaven is the number one film of the weekend, so why are we so
hard on it? The Witherspoon/Mark Ruffalo flick opened ultra-wide in 3,508
venues, 215 locations more than Sweet Home Alabama had in 2002. The
difference lies in the per venue averages. Alabama returned a scintillating
$10,826 per location, while Just Like Heaven managed only 45% of that total.
Its per venue total of $4,703 is middling even by September standards. Even
if we don't compare Heaven to last weekend's Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose explosion, it
doesn't stack up to any of the number films that opened in the top spot in
September of 2004. Hero, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Sky Captain and the
World of Tomorrow and The Forgotten all had better averages as well.
Relative to its ultra-availability to consumers, Just Like Heaven simply did
not meet expectations. The question becomes whether it will show legs from
here, but since significantly fewer customers than tracking indicated made
the effort opening weekend, we're dubious. Just Like Heaven is going to have
a hard time making more than $50 million during its domestic run.
The news is not all bad for Witherspoon, though. The actress's next release,
Walk the Line, is poised to be 2005's answer to Ray. This is Witherspoon's
career M.O. She generally follows shameless commercial projects with Oscar
contenders in order to preserve her indie credibility...well, as much as a
woman married to Ryan Phillippe can, anyway. She followed American Psycho
with Legally Blonde, then went to The Importance of Being Earnest before
doing two studio films in Sweet Home Alabama and Legally Blonde 2. Vanity
Fair was then sandwiched between the Legally Blonde sequel and Just Like
Heaven. It's fitting that she co-stars in Walk the Line, since that's
exactly what her career has been doing. As long as that film lives up to its
tremendous buzz, this misstep will be quickly forgotten. As for BOP favorite
Mark Ruffalo, he finishes the year up strong with two intriguing-looking
projects in Rumor Has It and All the King's Men. Disappointments with 13
Going on 30 and Just Like Heaven kill his short-term chances as a romantic
lead, though.
Speaking of last week's top performer, The Exorcism of Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose slides one
spot to second place. Its estimated weekend total of $15.3 million
represents a drop of 49%, which is actually bordering on being a pleasant
surprise for a horror flick. This is particularly true for a film that skews
as young as Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose did in its debut frame, as 57% of consumers who
attended were under the age of 25. It would not have been shocking for the
film to decline 60% or more in its second weekend. As such, a drop of 49%
feels like a second straight win. Simply consider that the second weekend
total of $15.3 million is what most analysts forecasted the opening weekend
to be. We're only two weeks into the fall, and already have seen one of the
season's biggest winners. So far, it has accumulated a grand total of $52
million.
Just Like Heaven was not the only disappointing opener. Lord of War debuted
in third place with an estimated $9.2 million from 2,814 venues. Its per
location average of $3,269 makes it envious of Just Like Heaven's number.
Nicolas Cage was coming off National Treasure, which opened to $35.1 million
on its way to $173 million domestically. To say that this follow-up is
lackluster would be an understatement. Throughout his career, Cage has
struggled with the occasional bombs like Windtalkers and Captain Corelli's
Mandolin. Maybe the lesson Cage should learn here is to stay away from war
films and stick to heist flicks. The good news for Cage is that he has
another chance at success next month with the release of The Weather Man, a
pedigreed movie that will team him up with director Gore Verbinski (Pirates
of the Caribbean), Michael Caine and Hope Davis.
Universal Pictures continues to get lucky with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. The
Steve Carell film experienced a significant drop last weekend due to the
post-holiday box office deflation, but it recovers nicely in its fifth
frame. The fourth place finisher earned an estimated $5.8 million,
representing a drop of only 24%. With a domestic total of $90.6 million, the
raunchy comedy continues its cherry-popping march to $100 million.
If you hadn't heard of Cry Wolf until we mentioned it at this moment, you're
not alone. It winds up in fifth place, anyway. The Rogue Pictures release
scared up $4.6 million from 1,790 venues full of unsuspecting, gullible
viewers. If you're wondering about the film's legs, simply consider that it
wasn't even screened for critics. With that said, it actually fared better
than the weekend's other horror release. Venom, which had at one point been
looking at a semi-wide release, but found itself headed into Friday with
less than 500 locations and a seeming attempt by Dimension to pretend it
never existed. We're sure you'll be able to find both movies on the shelf at
your local Blockbuster by the time you've finished reading this column.
Jason Statham's naked, hairy chest continues to display its prowess as The
Transporter 2 finished in sixth place. It had a weekend total of $4 million,
which represents a drop of 46%. Its cumulative domestic total of $36.5
million has allowed it to surpass the original by $11 million. This is great
news for 20th Century Fox, as the first film made the bulk of its money once
it hit DVD.
Focus Features continues to have success with The Constant Gardener, which
fell only 22% for an estimated weekend total of $3.7 million and seventh
place. Its running total of $24.4 million continues to prove what a powerful
box office draw Bill Nighy is. Think about it. He's done Underworld, Love
Actually, Shaun of the Dead, and this film. Clearly, he's the lucky rabbit's
foot of box office success!
The bottom of the top ten is compiled of three strong holdovers. Red Eye
goes over the $55 million mark as it tallies an additional $2.9 from
Friday-to-Sunday. It will have unusual competition next weekend, as the
similarly-themed Flightplan hits theaters. Those Penguins just keep trudging
right along, as Warner Independent Pictures' March of the Penguins added
another $2.6 million to its impressive run. It currently has a total of
$70.4 million. There isn't much else that can be said about Wedding Crashers
now that it has surpassed the $200 million mark. It added another
$2.5million to its coffers this weekend, its tenth in the top ten.
Compared to last year, box office was up 12% on the strength of better
openers and the holdover from Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose'>Emily Rose. The top ten movies this weekend
were able to rack up $67.1 million, an increase from last year's total of
$59.8 million.

Jude Law top of the bots
15/08/2005 - 08:01:09
Sienna Miller may have given him the bum's rush, but Jude Law has topped a
poll of the sexiest bottoms on film.
The heart-throb actor beat Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise'>Tom Cruise to the title thanks to
his nude bath scene in The Talented Mr Ripley.
Miller, who called off their engagement after Law admitted an affair with
his children's nanny, also made the list for her sexy scenes in Alfie.
The poll of 1,000 moviegoers was carried out by Odeon cinemas.
Pitt came second for his role as Achilles in the Greek epic Troy.
Third - and the top-rated female celebrity - was Scarlett Johansson's rear
view in the opening scenes of Lost In Translation.
Cuba Gooding Jr came fourth with Jerry Maguire, while Miller was followed by
Ryan Phillippe in Cruel Intentions.
Tom Cruise'>Tom Cruise standing by the sink in a pair of white underpants in Top Gun
also made the list, as did Ewan McGregor's nude scene in Velvet Goldmine.
Marilyn Monroe was the only golden oldie to make the list, with film fans
fondly remembering her curves in The Seven Year Itch.
And Renee Zellweger'>Renee Zellweger brings up the rear as Bridget Jones for the scene in
which she slides down a fireman's pole.
The Odeon commissioned the poll to mark the launch of its extra-large
premier seats.
Spokeswoman Kate MacFarlane said: "To celebrate the launch of what we feel
are our best seats in the house we wanted to uncover whose 'seat' our
customers would vote for.
"Jude's not doing too well in the popularity polls at the moment but clearly
people don't have any qualms with his rear."
