LOS ANGELES - Johnny Depp has the write stuff when it comes to signing
autographs while Cameron Diaz is the worst, according to a new list
Friday from Autograph Collector magazine.
Depp, followed by George Clooney, topped the magazine's 14th annual
survey of Hollywood's best and worst signers. The "Pirates of the
Caribbean" star also was rated best last year.
"Many stars become bad signers once fame and fortune hits, but not
Depp. He's even signed autographs for crowds at the airport while
carrying luggage," said Steve Cyrkin, editor and publisher of the Santa
Ana, Calif.-based magazine.
As for Clooney, "he'll joke as he signs, and make fun of how he looks
in photos he's handed to autograph," Cyrkin said.
When it comes to her moniker, however, Diaz gets a flunking grade.
"Cameron Diaz may be a talented actress, but she's persistently a
terrible signer. Instead of just turning down a person's autograph
request, she'll lecture them about how dumb autographs are," Cyrkin
said.
Russell Crowe would have been named as the best of the worst but in
recent months he has been much nicer to fans, Cyrkin said in a
telephone interview Friday.
Cyrkin said the list, which appears in the magazine's June issue, was
based on information from a professional autograph collector and an
enthusiastic amateur who is a journalist.
"They're the guys who want to get five or 10 or 12 of everything but
they do see people" and know the "track records" of the stars, he said.
"It's looking at the spirit of the way they sign," Cyrkin said. "It's
how they treat their fans."
Here is the list of 10 best and 10 worst Hollywood autograph signers
for 2006, according to the magazine:
Best
1. Johnny Depp
2. George Clooney
3. Matt Damon
4. Al Pacino
5. Tom Cruise
6. Angelina Jolie
7. Elijah Wood
8. Brittany Murphy
9. Jack Nicholson
10. Clint Eastwood
Worst

2. Bruce Willis
3. Demi Moore
4. Tobey Maguire

Heath's new role
By Sydney Confidential's CHRIS BARRETT
May 06, 2006
HEATH Ledger is reportedly set to play a young Bob Dylan in a new biopic on
the legendary singer-songwriter.
The Aussie actor, 27, will join a stellar cast including compatriot Cate
Blanchett, Richard Gere, Christian Bale and Julianne Moore.
Ledger, who missed the Sydney premiere of his new film Candy earlier this
week, will be one of six actors including Gere and Bale playing Dylan
throughout his life in I'm Not There.
Irish heartthrob Colin Farrell was tipped to play the folk icon in the early
stages of his career but has been dumped for Ledger by director Todd Haynes
at the last minute.
The film is expected to start shooting next month.
Ledger's involvement signals a quick reversal of his vow to step back from
acting and let actor fiancee Michelle Williams be the breadwinner for their
five-month-old daughter Matilda.
"I'm going to try not to work at all this year and send Michelle out to
bring in the cash," he said in February.
"I'll be Mr Mum. It's something very important to me."
The Dylan film follows hot on the heels of the critically acclaimed Johnny
Cash biopic Walk The Line, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon,
which was nominated for five Oscars and earned Witherspoon the Best Actress
statuette.
More than a dozen Dylan classics will be performed by acts such as the White
Stripes and Aimee Mann in the movie.

I'll admit to being in that category, which may explain why I liked
this movie. OTOH, I didn't know much about Jimmy Hoffa and felt that
the movie HOFFA gave me very little understanding of him. Perhaps it
suffered by comparison to Malcolm X which I saw around the same time
and I considered a much better character study (I didn't know much
about him either FWIW).

BEYOND THE SEA is underrated and will be much more appreciated in
time. It's like Dennis Potter does Bobby Darin. Kevin Spacey's
performances on stage and interpreting the songs is worth the price of
admission alone. I found Roger Ebert's review of the film to be
surprising perceptive and right on the money.

WALK THE LINE is highly overrated. I kind of hate it---and I love
country music and I love Johnny Cash. Joaquin Phoenix only seems like
Johnny Cash to folks who haven't spent many hours watching and
listening to Johnny Cash or know much about him. As Cash, Phoenix
ain't fit the drink the water off Luther's boots; his performance
lacks any hypnotic edge or consistent interest except that mustered by
the . Reese Witherspoon is merely passable (although I usually
admire her greatly as an actress), she's marginally better than
Phoenix; there is nothing exceptional about her performance. The
whole movie is by the numbers stuff that never really tells us why the
man's music was so important, focusing on yet another drug addict tale
instead with no new territory explored. The film's representations of
Sam Phillips and the other Sun Records people are a drippy joke with
the negligible exception of Jerry Lee Lewis. The filmmakers don't
seem to have studied the people Cash hung out with at all.
When it comes to show business bios of this ilk, COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER
and RAY are the standard to be met. COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER---the
prototype, and still the best country music biography ever made---is
light years better than WALK THE LINE. In COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER we
find Sissy Spacek channeling Loretta Lynn to perfection and Tommy Lee
Jones as Dolittle drives the movie like a crackling hot bulldozer.
RAY is on the same par, a wonder to behold. And---as I've pointed out
earlier---Jamie Foxx actually did do his own singing and playing in
the off-stage sequences and is so good at doing Ray Charles musically
that his work was blended seamlessly with the real thing.

NY DAILY NEWS...RUSH AND MOLLOY
Lindsay Lohan swears she doesn't have as much sex as the tabloids would
have you believe. But she's not opposed to the occasional orgasm.
"Sleeping around is not something that interests me, but the act of
love is an amazing thing," the "Prairie Home Companion" star says.
"It's groovy. You've gotta have some fun and let those emotions out."
And what of those many men who allegedly have come to her emotional
rescue: Chad Michael Murray, Richie Akiva, Jared Leto, Jonathan
Rhys-Myers, Colin Farrell , Joaquin Phoenix and whoever she was with at
Bungalow last weekend? The 19-year-old scoffs at the endless tabloid
linkages. Still, she admits, "It sounds cheesy, but I have people who
are fun to have crushes on."
What does she look for in a boyfriend?
"Confidence, loyalty and a good sense of humor, because I come with a
lot of baggage," she tells Cosmo. "I have paparazzi following me every
day. After I finish, I'd like to have a boyfriend. It would be nice to
have that security and to have someone to go to a movie with."
Would she do a nude scene?
"I'm okay with being topless in front of people, but I'm not sure if
I'd want to do it onscreen," she says. "If it's a role that's going to
win me an Oscar, it would be different."
We look forward to seeing more of those freckles.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The cowboy love story Brokeback Mountain led nominees
Thursday for film prizes from actors and directors unions, including
performers Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams and Jake Gyllenhaal and filmmaker
Ang Lee.
Brokeback Mountain earned four Screen Actors Guild nominations: lead actor
for Ledger and supporting actor for Gyllenhaal, who play old shepherding
buddies concealing their homosexual affair from their families; supporting
actress for Williams, who plays Ledger's wife; and best overall performance
by its entire cast.
Lee, whose films include Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Hulk, was among
best-filmmaker nominees by the Directors Guild of America. Other directing
nominees were George Clooney for the Edward R. Murrow tale Good Night, and
Good Luck; Paul Haggis for the ensemble drama Crash; Bennett Miller for the
Truman Capote story Capote; and Steven Spielberg for Munich, a thriller
centred on the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics.
Clooney also earned a supporting-actor nominee from SAG for his role as an
undercover CIA agent in the oil-industry thriller Syriana.
Along with Brokeback Mountain, SAG nominations for best film cast went to
Capote, Crash, Good Night and Good Luck, and Hustle & Flow, the story of a
pimp and drug dealer forging a career as a rap singer.
Joining Ledger in the lead-actor category were Philip Seymour Hoffman as
author Capote in Capote; Russell Crowe as Depression-era boxer Jim Braddock
in Cinderella Man; Joaquin Phoenix as singer Johnny Cash in Walk the Line;

at a mining company in North Country; Reese Witherspoon as Cash's soulmate
and eventual wife, June Carter, in Walk the Line; and Ziyi Zhang as a poor
girl who becomes a belle of Japan in Memoirs of a Geisha.
Huffman also was nominated for best actress in a TV comedy series for
Desperate Housewives, a role that earned her an Emmy last year.
Desperate Housewives co-stars Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria,
who along with Huffman took four of the five TV musical or comedy
nominations at the upcoming Golden Globes, all were shut out for guild
nominations. The show's entire cast was honoured with a nomination for
comedy ensemble, along with Arrested Development, Boston Legal, Curb Your
Enthusiasm, Everybody Loves Raymond and My Name Is Earl.
Nominated for TV drama ensemble were The Closer, Grey's Anatomy, Lost, Six
Feet Under and The West Wing.
Policeman roles in Crash - Don Cheadle as a devoted detective, Matt Dillon
as a racist beat cop - earned them supporting-actor nominations. Along with
Gyllenhaal and Clooney, the other nominee was Paul Giamatti as boxer
Braddock's manager in Cinderella Man.
Joining Williams as supporting-actress nominees were Amy Adams as a southern
waif in the comic drama Junebug; Catherine Keener as Capote pal Harper Lee,

Phoenix Returns to Johnny Cash's Prison Stage
Joaquin Phoenix gave his Oscar hopes a boost yesterday when he toured
California's Folsom State Prison - the scene of his big screen alter-ego
Johnny Cash's most famous concert. The actor and Walk The Line biopic
co-star Shooter Jennings joined prison officials for a tour of the jail
before Phoenix performed a brief concert as Cash ahead of a movie screening
to more than 50 inmates. Cash's 1968 show at the prison cemented the Man In
Black's image as an outsider and earned him a top-selling live album.
Phoenix has become an Oscar front-runner for his role as Cash.
