I think in season 2 the phones were so overloaded that a lot of Clay's
votes couldn't get through. One of the producers said in an interview
that Clay was ahead by millions of votes every week. The judges
seemed to favour Ruben because they didn't want 2 white winners in a
row, but he turned out to be a poor interviewee and recorded the
wrong kind of music. Although Clay lost, he got most of the attention
from the press because he was so charismatic, chatty, and had the best
story.
Taylor seems to have led the votes all this season even thought Simon
tried his best to get people to see Taylor as a no-talent, bumbling
older man. They didn't have an obvious winner in the other
contestants so they probably decided to let the people decide. Taylor
has more personality that Katharine, and that trumps voice in a
lackluster group.

The Ruben Studdard win and subsequent career nosedive lends credence to
that. I believe the vote totals could be rigged to give the win to the
contestant the producers believe will be the most successful. That year, the
choice was between big black soul singer and gay Howdy Doody. I think the
producers thought Studdard was a safer bet. This year was odd. On paper,

Wed May 24, 10:32 PM ET
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Gray-haired soul singer Taylor Hicks won the
2006 "American Idol" contest on Wednesday, capturing the hearts and
votes of millions of viewers in the fifth edition of America's
top-rated TV show.
Hicks, 29, who was told in auditions that he had the wrong image for a
pop star, beat balladeer Katharine McPhee in the climax of a nationwide
contest that attracted tens of thousands of wannabe performers.
Hicks and McPhee sang for the title and the winner was announced on
Wednesday at the end of a star-studded finale at Hollywood's Kodak
Theater. The show featured guest performances by Prince, Dionne
Warwick, Mary J. Blige, Burt Bacharach, Toni Braxton and Meat Loaf.
Alabama native Hicks, beloved for his trademark manic dancing, is the
oldest "American Idol" in the reality TV series that has become a
ratings juggernaut for Fox TV attracting some 30 million viewers a week
since January.
Harmonica playing Hicks, who spent years singing in local nightclubs
trying to break into the business, wins a coveted recording contract
and will release his first single "Do I Make You Proud" in the next few
days.
"Thank You America! I'm living the American Dream," screamed Hicks as
he sang out the show.
McPhee, 22, a sultry Los Angeles musical theater performer, was deemed
by the three-person judging panel to have one of the best vocal talents
in "American Idol" history.
But viewers got the final say and chose the charismatic Hicks, whose
fans call themselves the "Soul Patrol." Program officials said more
than 63 million votes were sent in by phone or text but they did not
give a breakdown.
With a style that mixes Joe Cocker with Ray Charles, Hicks added
another musical genre to the Idol showcase after the pop songs of
previous winner Kelly Clarkson, the R&B sound of Ruben Studdard and
Fantasia Barrino and the country music of Carrie Underwood.
Hicks was a consistent favorite with viewers despite some acerbic
comments by British judge and record producer Simon Cowell, who said
one of his more goofy performances was like "a drunken father singing
at a wedding."
The fifth season of "American Idol" proved the most successful ever,
forcing rival TV networks to reschedule their programs to avoid
competition.
Once derided as a cheesy talent show "Idol" has gained respectability
in the industry and proved a boon for the struggling recording industry
with sales of more than 33 million records since 2002 for finalists and
runners-up.
The three "Idol" judges -- Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson --
have all have signed on for at least three more seasons and auditions
for the 2007 show start in cities across the nation in two months time.

The show is about making an American idol, not rewarding the best singer.
Britney Spears is (or was) the very definition of an American idol
before she started pumping out trailer babies and she's a horrible
singer. She was a mega-celebrity, churning out cookie-cutter songs by
the dozen and trading on her sexuality to put the butts in the seats.
Right now on that show, the Southern blond girl is the closest thing to
an American idol that they have going. She ain't the best singer but she
can sing well enough to pass and she's easily the hottest little biscuit
up there. She could easily be the next Britney Spears equivalent (as if
the world needs such a thing) and that's what an American idol really is
these days, for better or worse.

It's simple. Given a choice between Ruben and Clay, TBTB guessed that the
fat black guy would be more marketable than the little gay guy. That was a
miscalulation, as the housewife market took to Aiken like bees to honey. The
Fantasia win was a gamble that her Macy Gray-eqsue delivery would be
marketable. Unfortunately, she was never able to overcome her sheer UGLINESS
and lack of class. I do not think any year since the first one has been
legitimate. It is still good TV, though.

Do the names Ruben Studdard and Fantasia Barrino ring a bell? Ruben was
outsold by Clay Aiken by a huge margin, which makes NO sense, if he was
indeed the winner. Fantasia didn't sell enough CDs to make one think she had
a large TV following.

If AI is more about personality than talent, then it would explain
Rueben and Fantasia fading away in the world of music. I'm inclined to
think that a piss-poor singer with enormous personality would at least
survive longer than others who have less personality but much more
talent.

There could be lots of reasons. The best singer isn't necessarily
going to outsell a slightly worse singer if the best singer works in a
less popular genre. Or it could be that the singer who sold the most
copies was much better at promoting himself once the show ended. And
you didn't give any reason why "Idol" would fix the voting.

Studdard manager accused of identity theft
Associated Press
June 30, 2005 8:30 AM
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - "American Idol" winner Ruben Studdard has filed a
complaint with the Birmingham police department, accusing his ex-manager of
identity theft and forgery.
Studdard, 26, said in the complaint filed Monday that Ronald W. Edwards
forged paperwork giving himself power of attorney. According to the report,
the forgery took place between Aug. 1, 2003, and Nov. 30, 2004.
The singer also claims Edwards used his credit cards to take $105,000 and
had written checks for $150,000. The report says $22,000 in checks were
stolen and deposited in Edwards' account. Studdard sued Edwards and his
marketing company, SEZ Inc., in February, claiming Edwards misused more than
$246,000 of his money.
Edwards denied the allegations and has indicated Studdard owes him money.
Edwards filed a petition for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on June 17, prompting a
stay in the lawsuit.
Vic Hayslip, a lawyer for Studdard, claimed that Edwards' bankruptcy filing
was an effort to avoid giving a deposition in the lawsuit. Edwards' lawyer,
Glennon Threatt, called the contention inaccurate.
Studdard won Fox TV's "American Idol" talent competition in May 2003.
