Troubled soul star WHITNEY HOUSTON has turned her back on drugs and is
now aiming to literally clean up her messy life, according to the
singer's best friend CHERELLE.
The former R+B star has revealed she and Houston recently took up an
invitation from the diva's friends DENZEL WASHINGTON and MEL GIBSON to
hide out in Los Angeles, visiting churches in disguise.
Cherelle tells urban magazine Sister 2 Sister the trip afforded
Houston the chance to go "straight detox" after confessing she had drug
abuse problems, and the quality time allowed her longtime friend to
talk some sense into her.
Cherelle admits Houston was upset by recent tabloid claims about her
drug habit made by sister-in-law TINA BROWN, that were accompanied by
photographs of the singer's reported squalid drug den.
Houston's pal claims some of the allegations Brown made were true,
but the picture was nothing more than a shot of a messy bathroom.
Cherelle says, "I told Nippy (Houston's nickname), I was being honest
with her: 'Some of the things (Tina) did say in there (article) were
true - not true in a drug form, but yes, you are sloppy! Yes, you are
messy - not only in the bathroom, but period.'"
Cherelle goes on to explain that Houston's inability to keep a tidy
home comes from years of having aides to fetch and carry everything for
her.
She adds, "She was just 18-years-old when she had a hit record...
It's out of habit, her dropping stuff down. Now I'm like, 'You're
43-years-old, n**ger. Pick that up! I'm not picking up behind you.'"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Silent Hill," a horror film based on a video
game, replaced comedy spoof "Scary Movie 4" as the top choice for North
American moviegoers during the weekend, according to studio figures
issued on Sunday.
The new champ, starring Australia's Radha Mitchell as a mother who
loses her troubled daughter in a creepy West Virginia mining town, sold
about $20.2 million worth of tickets since opening on Friday.
"Scary Movie 4" followed with $17.0 million for the three-day period,
taking its total to $67.7 million after two weekends. The Sunday
portions of the tallies are estimates. Final data will be issued on
Monday.
"The Sentinel," a thriller starring Michael Douglas as a renegade
Secret Service agent who must thwart a presidential assassination
attempt, opened at No. 3 with $14.7 million.
Two animal cartoons rounded out the top five, box office smash "Ice
Age: The Meltdown" with $12.8 million in its fourth weekend, and the
less-successful entrant "The Wild" with $8.1 million in its second.
One other film opened in wide release on Friday, the Hugh Grant
satirical comedy "American Dreamz," which earned just $3.7 million,
tying at No. 8 with the Denzel Washington thriller "Inside Man."
Also new to the top-10 was "Friends with Money," a distaff ensemble
piece featuring Jennifer Aniston and Frances McDormand. After
two weeks in limited release, it jumped five places to No. 10 with $3.6
million.
"Silent Hill" was released by TriStar Pictures, a Sony Corp. unit
specializing in low-budget films. It paid $14 million for the right to
distribute the film throughout the Americas, and will break even in the
mid-$20 million range, said Rory Bruer, Sony's president of domestic
theatrical distribution.
Directed by French filmmaker Christophe Gans from a based on the
Konami video game, the movie played primarily to a male audience under
25 years, Bruer said.
Sony, which had a difficult time at the box office in 2005, has topped
the charts three other times this year, but not with any films produced
and marketed by its flagship Columbia Pictures unit.
"Underworld: Evolution" and "When a Stranger Calls" were handled by the
low-budget Screen Gems arm, while "The Pink Panther," was only marketed
by Columbia when Sony led a group that bought the picture's developer,
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Sony's art-house wing, Sony Pictures Classics,
released "Friends With Money."
"The Sentinel" was released by News Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox,
which said it was pleased with the opening. Almost three-quarters of
the audience was aged 30 and older, the studio said. Fox also released
the "Ice Age" sequel, which has earned $167.9 million after four weeks.
Universal Pictures, which released "American Dreamz," a satire
involving an "American Idol"-like talent show and a George Bush-like
president, said it had hoped the film would reach the high-single-digit
range. The film was modestly budgeted, though, at $17 million.
Universal is a unit of General Electric Co.'s NBC Universal Inc.
"Scary Movie 4" was released by Dimension Films, a unit of the
Weinstein Co., the nascent studio owned by former Miramax Films chiefs
Harvey and Bob Weinstein.
"The Wild," released by Walt Disney Co., has earned $22 million after
two weekends.

Lurhmann's NT movie put off
From:
April 01, 2006
THE filming of a Baz Luhrmann movie in the Territory, starring Aussie
superstars Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe, has been put back because of
haggling over the budget.
The director has been forced to stand down some of the "very loyal" staff
working on the film, he told The Australian newspaper.
He has already consulted with Crowe and Kidman on the for the
romantic epic, which begins in the mid-1930s and ends with the 1942-43
Japanese attack on Darwin.
A decision will be needed soon if filming in the Kimberley is to start
before the next wet season.
Several locations, including Darwin, the Kimberley, Bowen and Sydney's Fox
Studios, are waiting to see if they'll get a piece of the action.
"To say it is a complex and large-scale undertaking is an understatement and
I cannot formally announce the project until all of the crucial elements are
secure," Luhrmann said.
Hollywood studio 20th Century Fox has baulked at Luhrmann's proposed budget
of $175 million, despite one studio insider saying they're desperate to work
with the director, the Daily Telegraph reported.
But the film was unlikely to begin production before August anyway, a fact
confirmed by Crowe's commitment to Ridley Scott's "American Gangster", which
he will film opposite Denzel Washington in July.
The studio has asked Luhrmann to cut tens of millions from the budget.
While he conceded some crew had been "disengaged", this is not uncommon on a
delayed film. And the director of "Moulin Rouge!" is unwilling to drop the
film without a fight.

Baz film on hold
From: By Sandy George
March 30, 2006
FILMMAKER Baz Luhrmann has confirmed that some crew have been stood down
from his upcoming film and evidence is gathering that shooting is unlikely
to start this year.
The combination of the towering talent of Luhrmann with the internationally
famous homegrown stars, Nicole Kidman'>Nicole Kidman'>Nicole Kidman'>Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe, makes this one of
the most significant Australian films of all time.
But this very combination, the film's World War II setting and the
difficulties of shooting in remote locations - it is an epic romance and the
Kimberley and the Queensland town of Bowen have been mentioned as possible
locations - means 20th Century Fox will not give production the green light
until it is confident that the huge investment will pay off.
"To say that it is a complex and large-scale undertaking is an
understatement and I cannot formally announce the project until all of the
crucial elements are secure," said the director of Moulin Rouge,
Romeo+Juliet and Strictly Ballroom.
"Currently, they are not, and so it is true we've had to disengage some of
our very loyal team. As soon as we are able to bring those crucial elements
together I will be able to make a formal announcement concerning the
starting date of the production, at which time it will also be named."
He added that the enthusiasm and support from the creative team and crew,
local and state governments and members of the community to see the film
made has been "unflinching".
Nicole Kidman'>Nicole Kidman'>Nicole Kidman'>Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe's schedules and the need to wait for
manageable weather conditions indicate shooting may not occur until next
year.
Luhrmann has already consulted with Crowe and Nicole Kidman'>Nicole Kidman'>Nicole Kidman'>Nicole Kidman on the
for the romantic epic which begins in the mid-1930s and ends with its major
set-piece, the 1942-43 Japanese bombing of Darwin.
Luhrmann, who is also co-writing and producing, recently flew to Los Angeles
to work with Crowe after the Academy Awards. He then darted to Nashville,
hometown of Kidman's beau, Keith Urban, to collaborate with the actress on
the and costumes.
Crowe, after watching his footy team the Rabbitohs on Sunday, flew to New
Zealand.
Luhrmann only last week was in the outback researching locations.
Kidman is known to be shooting an untitled film by Noah Baumbach, who
directed The Squid And The Whale, in New York for two months from next week.
Crowe is widely reported to be doing American Gangster with director Ridley
Scott and co-star Denzel Washington from July.
Add to that Luhrmann's assertion to The Australian last month that filming
had to start in August at the "absolute latest" because of the wet season.
If the film is delayed it will be a bitter disappointment to all concerned.
But the only problem at this stage, it appears, is getting studio 20th
Century Fox to sign off on the budget. Then it will be all systems go by
August, an insider told The Daily Telegraph's Michael Bodey.
Confirmation of the film's budget and name is expected within the next
fortnight, with a number of Australian locations, including the Kimberleys,
Darwin, Bowen and Sydney's Fox Studios, waiting with anticipation to see if
they'll get a piece of the lucrative action.
Even Newcastle, in the New South Wales Hunter region, believes it may be a
chance to double as the Darwin pier after the film's location manager called
Film Hunter agents.
"They were looking for a pier and there was something in the Newcastle area
that I was able to show them," Film Hunter's Christine Armstrong said.

Why Jodie Foster'>Jodie Foster avoids the Oscars
March 27, 2006
While Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts and Charlize Theron were navigating the red
carpet crowd in high heels at the recent Academy Awards, Jodie Foster'>Jodie Foster was at
home in New York in her pyjamas.
Sitting with Foster on the couch were her two sons, Charles, 7, and
Christopher, 4.
In what has become a tradition for the Foster family, Chinese food is
ordered in and a noisy chanting ritual begins.
Foster, as a member of the Academy and a two-time best actress Oscar winner,
could don the gown and jewellery and attend Hollywood's night of nights each
year, but an evening in with takeaway, her kids and pyjamas is far more
appealing for the 43-year-old, who began acting at the age of three.
"Why not go?" Foster asks. "You have to be kidding.
"Sometimes I go when I'm not involved, but it's a lot better to watch it on
TV."
Besides, the Academy probably would not allow Foster and her kids to make
their noisy chants if they were sitting front row in the Kodak Theatre.
"In the early part of the show I always get my kids to chant the actor whom
I want to win," Foster, who is usually guarded about her home life, said.
"My sons don't see any movies so they don't care who wins.
"So they were like 'Rachel Weisz, Rachel Weisz'."
The chanting helped because Weisz did win the best supporting actress Oscar
for The Constant Gardener.
Foster would not reveal her other picks, giving a sarcastic "no comment",
but believes her good friend, Russell Crowe, deserved at least a nomination
for his performance in Cinderella Man.
Foster rated Crowe's snubbed portrayal of heavyweight 1930s boxer James
Braddock as better than his Oscar win for Gladiator in 2001 and his
nominated roles for The Insider (2000) and A Beautiful Mind (2002).
"Russell, I think, it was a better performance than what he has ever given,"
said Foster, who won her Oscars for The Accused (1989) and The Silence of
the Lambs (1992).
Foster may not be able to stay home for next year's Academy Awards ceremony
as she could be nominated for a startling performance in the new Spike Lee
directed action thriller, Inside Man.
Foster's Inside Man co-stars are Denzel Washington and Clive Owen and she
appears in probably fewer than 10 scenes, but The Los Angeles Times in its
recent review dubbed her performance as "picture stealing" and her character
as "the ultimate ice-princess power broker in a city of power brokers".
Inside Man is set in New York and Foster plays Madeline White, a mysterious
designer suit-wearing troubleshooter.
The billionaire owner of a Wall Street bank, played by Christopher Plummer,
hires her when a gang of bandits, led by Owen's character, takes over the
bank and holds 50 employees and customers hostage.
The bank's owner has a secret hidden in the bank's safe and wants it kept
that way and White coolly weaves her way into the drama, making deals with
the NYPD negotiator (Washington) and the bank robbers.
"I liked the idea she was somebody who held equal weight and power with
these other two men who are inhabiting this very masculine, powerful world,"
Foster said.
"They have guns, masks and beards, but she holds equal weight to them
without ever raising her voice, always saying please and thank you and with
a breezy, detached, amused quality because she's been through this before.
"She's been through it 20 times, but the two guys have only done it once."
Troubleshooters such as Madeline White exist, especially in Hollywood and
Washington, DC, she says.
"They clean up dirty laundry," Foster said.
"You call them to deal with a scandal.
"In Washington, the world of politics, we know there are people like this,
although, I don't know anyone who dresses like that.
"I love that she lives on Madison Avenue, she goes to the Hamptons on the
weekend, gets her hair bleached, fake tan, has the shoes and has her own
richly independent identity in this world of very macho guys."
Foster fans can expect to see plenty more of the actress in coming years
after she worked only sparingly while raising Charles and Christopher.
"My kids are at the age now where they are both in school," Foster, who
reportedly has been in a long-term relationship with producer Cydney
Bernard, explained.
Foster will soon begin shooting The Brave One, co-starring Terrence Howard,
in which she will play a woman seeking revenge from a brutal attack.
In 2007 she will direct and star alongside Robert De Niro in the legal
drama, Sugarland.
It will be a busy two years, but Foster says her kids remain her No. 1
priority.
"If I get to 7pm or 8pm and the director says 'wrap', I'm gone. I'm straight
home," she said.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Denzel Washington and director Spike Lee
scored the best opening of their careers on Sunday, as the heist
thriller "Inside Man" grabbed the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office
in North America with estimated ticket sales of $29 million.
The film, which also stars Clive Owen and Jodie Foster, was the top
picture overseas as well, with sales of $9.6 million from 18 countries,
including No. 1 openings in Britain and Germany, according to
distributor Universal Pictures.
Washington's previous best bow was the kidnap thriller "Man on Fire,"
which opened with $22.8 million in April 2004. Lee's best was the
comedy concert "The Original Kings of Comedy," with $11 million in
August 2000.
"Inside Man," which cost about $45 million to make, revolves around a
cat-and-mouse game between a bank robber (Owen) and a New York cop
(Washington). Foster plays an intermediary with her own agenda.
Universal said exit polling indicated that 68 percent of the audience
was aged 30 and older, and that male viewers comprised 54 percent.
Three-quarters of respondents said Washington was their main reason for
going. Universal Pictures is a unit of General Electric Co.'s NBC
Universal Inc.
GAME ON FOR 'STAY ALIVE'
Last weekend's champ, the futuristic terrorist drama "V for Vendetta,"
slipped to No. 2 with $12.3 million for the Friday-to-Sunday period,
taking its 10-day haul to $46.2 million. The film, starring Hugo
Weaving and Natalie Portman, has earned about $17.7 million from 24
markets. It was released by Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. Pictures.
The box office boasted two other new entries. Walt Disney Co.'s video
game thriller "Stay Alive," which surpassed expectations by opening at
No. 3 with $11.2 million; and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.'s comedy
"Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector," which opened at No. 7 with a
modest $7.1 million.
"Stay Alive" revolves around a group of youngsters who discover that
players who lose the titular video game die mysteriously.
Three-quarters of the audience was aged 25 and under, said Disney,
which had been hoping for an opening in the $7 million to $10 million
range. "Stay Alive" marks the first release under Disney's resurrected
Hollywood Pictures label, which will focus on genre films.
"Larry the Cable Guy," starring the popular blue-collar stand-up comic,
played mostly to male viewers over 21, Lions Gate said. The studio had
hoped for an opening in the $7 million to $9 million range.
Rounding out the top five, Paramount Pictures' hit romantic comedy
"Failure to Launch" fell two to No. 4 with $10.8 million, followed by
Walt Disney Pictures' comedy remake "The Shaggy Dog" with $9.1 million,
also down two places. Their respective totals stand at $63.9 million
and $47.9 million, both after three weeks. Paramount is a unit of
Viacom Inc..

Oh get OFF IT. I can't stand star spin amongst stars like this. Mutual
ass-kissing. I adore Denzel, but this is crap. We have all SEEN
Angelina move. She walks like a man and she's not graceful nor
feminine. Liquid, my ass.

Clive Owen Nearly Snubbed Inside Man
2006-03-26 11:05:18
Actor CLIVE OWEN nearly turned down his latest film role opposite JODIE
FOSTER and DENZEL WASHINGTON, because he spends most of the movie behind a
mask.
The DERAILED star had doubts about accepting his role in INSIDE MAN, but
eventually decided join the cast of the bank heist film because it would
push the boundaries of his acting ability.
He explains, "I really had to think about it (accepting the part).
"An actor uses their face to express themselves, that's how you do a
performance and to have all of that taken away. It's strange.
"It was a very weird experience, because once we go inside the bank, I'm
masked for pretty much the rest of the movie.
"You've got these fantastic scenes with people like Denzel Washington and
Jodie Foster and you've got the mask on.
"It's very weird for them to act with as well, because they can't see the
eyes. It was odd."

They worked together in one of Crowe's first U.S. movies, "Virtuosity."
Except for the first half-hour, where Russell had a blast playing a
virtual reality criminal, it was easily one of the worst movies ever
made by two great actors.

On-screen rematch
From: AAP By Peter Mitchell in Los Angeles
HOLLYWOOD tough guys Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington will go
head-to-head later this year in what could be one of the great acting
showdowns.
Crowe, Denzel to go head to head in new Ridley Scott movie The Oscar
winners, arguably the most dominant leading men in Hollywood over the last
decade, will co-star in the Ridley Scott-directed crime drama, American
Gangster.
The film is set in the 1970s and based on the true story of how Harlem-based
drug lord Frank Lucas smuggled heroin into the United States in the coffins
of American soldiers killed during the Vietnam War.
"It's about one of the biggest and most notorious drug dealers in the
history of America, Frank Lucas, and a New York detective, Richie Roberts,
who tracks him down," Washington said during an interview to promote another
crime thriller, Inside Man.
"Eventually the two of them become friends."
Washington will play drug dealer Lucas while Crowe takes the part of
Roberts.
Washington, 51, who won the best actor Oscar in 2002 for Training Day,
beating fellow nominee Crowe (A Beautiful Mind), says he relishes the
challenge of working with Hollywood's best.
Washington had another all-star cast to work with in Inside Man, led by
Jodie Foster and Clive Owen.
Spike Lee directed the thriller, which opens in Australian cinemas next
week.
Owen plays the mastermind of an elaborate heist of a Wall Street bank.
Washington is a New York police negotiator and Foster is a mysterious,
designer suit-wearing troubleshooter hired by the billionaire owner of the
bank.
The plot leads to many tense scenes between the three leads.
"That's what it's all about," Washington said.
"You want to work with the best.
"I remember years back working with Gene Hackman. It was the same kind of
thing.
"It's not a competition. We're working together, but you want to be on your
toes and be prepared."
Washington said he is not interested in being the dominant actor on the set,
a trait that could lead to tension with co-stars like Crowe.
"I don't have to dominate," Washington said.
"I don't even use words like that. It's not my style."
Washington said American Gangster is set to begin filming in the mid to late
part of 2006.

Denzel Washington misses New York life
By STEVE TILLEY - Toronto Sun
NEW YORK -- Denzel Washington is getting ready to give up on Hollywood. But
not on the movie business, heck no. What kind of madman walks away from a
$20-million-per-picture pay cheque? A very mad madman, that's what kind.
No, Washington is simply ready to leave L.A. behind and move back to the Big
Apple. He's been in a New York state of mind lately, having shot director
Spike Lee's bank heist thriller Inside Man on the streets of Manhattan right
after finishing a stint on Broadway, starring as Brutus in Julius Caesar.
But it was in New Orleans, where he's shooting Tony Scott's time travel
thriller Deja Vu, that Washington realized he really missed his old stomping
grounds, thanks to his colourful and talkative Brooklyn-born driver.
"There's just a feel and a vibe that, living in California, I just don't
get," Washington lamented recently in an interview for Inside Man, taking
place in -- you guessed it -- New York. "I don't know what I'm doing out
there, other than raising my family," Washington said.
When it was suggested that perhaps it's time to pack his bags and go east,
Washington replied, "I'm tryin', I'm tryin'! Talk to my wife! I'm tryin'! In
fact, I'm looking at (New York) real estate ..."
Taking himself out of Hollywood isn't likely to have an impact on
Washington's star status. The five-time Oscar nominee (he's won twice, for
Glory and Training Day) remains one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood.
Respected by men, desired by women and hugely popular in the black
community, Washington can pretty much write his own ticket.
Yet for every high-concept, big budget Tony Scott blockbuster (Washington
also worked with the director on Man On Fire and Crimson Tide), there's a
Spike Lee film shot on a quick schedule and relatively modest budget. Inside
Man marks the fourth time Washington has worked with the director.
This is not your typical Spike Lee joint, though. Aside from a few
blink-and-you'll-miss-'em jabs at race issues, it's a straight-ahead heist
flick, in which a clever robber (Clive Owen) and his three accomplices storm
a bank, round up hostages and force everyone to dress in identical outfits,
making it impossible for the cops to tell innocents from bandits.
Washington is Keith Frazier, an NYPD detective called out to deal with the
hostage situation. But all is not as it seems. There's something fishy about
the robbers' demands, not to mention the nervous bank owner (veteran Canuck
actor Christopher Plummer) and a mysterious "fixer" (Jodie Foster), who's
been brought in to deal with the interests of people operating above the
law.
The film's story in intercut with interrogation scenes set later in the day,
in which Det. Frazier and his partner (Chiwetel Ejiofor) grill hostages who
apparently escaped the robbery unharmed.
Many of these scenes were improvised, including one in which a Sikh hostage
rails against the treatment he has received in a post-9/11 climate of fear
and mistrust."We had no dialogue in that scene. I had no lines. I think we
just improvised that," said Washington.
In one exchange, the man is complaining about all the things he can't get
because he's frequently mistaken for an Arab. "I'll bet you can get a cab,"
deadpans Frazier, and the man concedes that's never been a problem.
Washington says that line just came out of nowhere. "I said, 'I bet you can
get a cab,' and everyone just fell out. We didn't even do another take."
It's one of the few times -- remarkably, for a Spike Lee film starring
Hollywood's best-known black actor -- that race comes to the forefront of
the story.
Still, the issues of race and Hollywood do not go unprobed when speaking to
Washington. When asked if he believes black actors are generally only
honoured with Oscars for unflattering roles (Halle Berry in Monster's Ball,
Washington in Training Day), the actor said no.
"I do think sometimes you're awarded something over here when you should
have won over there," he said, musing about why playing a corrupt cop in
Training Day won him the Oscar when portraying Malcolm X didn't.
And sometimes, it's just a matter of taste. "People like the bad guy. I
did," Washington said with a chuckle. "I enjoyed Training Day. That was my
favourite part."
Denzel experiences Katrina's wake first-hand
For several weeks last summer, you couldn't turn on a TV or open a newspaper
without seeing images of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina on the
U.S. Gulf Coast.
Now, the victims of the disaster rarely make the news. But that doesn't mean
all is right in the city of New Orleans, says Denzel Washington. Far from
it.
"Most of the Garden District and the French Quarter is still intact," said
Washington, who is currently working on Tony Scott's time-travel thriller
Deja Vu in New Orleans.
"And then there's the rest of the city, 80% of the city."
Deja Vu was to have started filming last fall in New Orleans, but the
destruction caused by the hurricane and the widespread flooding nixed the
shoot. Still, director Scott was determined not to shift the location, and
Deja Vu is now the first major Hollywood feature to shoot in New Orleans
since Katrina.
"When you ride around, you see people doing whatever they can," said
Washington. "A lot of people are gutting their houses right back to the
bones of the house, letting it dry."
The spirit in the city is cautiously upbeat, said Washington, as people
battle back against the effects of the disaster. But there is much, much
work to be done.
"It's big. It's bigger than you can imagine," he said. "It just goes on,
mile after mile after mile, just empty homes.
"I don't know what they're going to do. It's going to take a long time."

Washington Let Himself Go for 'Inside Man'
Denzel Washington had to play down his good looks for his latest part in
the movie Inside Man, because he had to be a convincing "regular guy." The
Oscar-winner had to shave his head and pack on some extra weight to play a
cop who negotiates with a master criminal played by Clive Owen. He explains,
"He's a regular guy. He's in over his head. He's been accused of stealing
$140,000, his girlfriend wants to get married yesterday... This is the
biggest case he's ever had, so he's got a few issues." The Training Day star
insists his wife of 22-years, Pauletta, had no problems with her husband
letting himself go for the role. He adds, "(She's fine) as long as I buy her
something."
