LOS ANGELES - "Eight Below," a tale of survival among abandoned sled
dogs, was the leader of the box-office pack with a $25 million opening
over the four-day holiday weekend.
The romance spoof "Date Movie," from 20th Century Fox, debuted in
second place with $22.3 million, according to studio estimates Monday.
"If you will, we won the dog race," said Chuck Viane, head of
distribution for Disney, which released "Eight Below."
The new movies bumped off Sony's "The Pink Panther," the previous
weekend's No. 1 film, which slipped to third place with $21 million,
raising its 11-day total to $46.7 million.
The weekend's other new wide release, Sony's urban drama "Freedomland"
starring Samuel L. Jackson and Julianne Moore, opened a weak No. 7
with $7 million.
Hollywood had a healthy weekend, with the top-12 movies taking in
$135.9 million, down a fraction from President's Day weekend last year.
Like the previous weekend, when "The Pink Panther" drew a strong family
crowd while New Line's fright flick "Final Destination 3" grabbed
horror fans, the two top movies scored well with different target
audiences.
Parents and their children accounted for about two-thirds of
movie-goers catching "Eight Below," while four-fifths of the audience
for "Date Movie" was under 25.
"By programming two films that aren't chasing the same audience, you
can really build a pretty good weekend for two movies at the same
time," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker
Exhibitor Relations.
"Eight Below" stars Paul Walker as a guide in Antarctica forced by
a killer storm to leave his sled-dog team behind in the frozen
wasteland, where the animals must band together to survive the winter.
"Date Movie" features Alyson Hannigan and Adam Campbell in a "Scary
Movie"-type parody of such romantic comedies as "Hitch," "Meet the
Fockers" and "The Wedding Planner."
While "Eight Below" drew solid reviews, "Date Movie" was not screened
for critics beforehand, a sign the studio knows a film will get bad
reviews.
"Young teens and early twenty-somethings, and that is who this is
geared for, critics aren't necessarily quite in tune with that crowd,"
said Chris Aronson, general sales manager for "Date Movie" distributor
20th Century Fox.
Focus Features' "Brokeback Mountain," the favorite to win the
best-picture Academy Award, continued to benefit from its Oscar buzz,
taking in $3.8 million to lift its total to $72 million.
In limited release, the Russian fantasy thriller "Night Watch," a huge
hit in its native country, opened strongly with $110,171 in three
theaters, averaging a whopping $36,724 a cinema. By comparison, "Eight
Below" played in 3,066 theaters and averaged $8,164, while "Date Movie"
averaged $7,709 in 2,896 cinemas.
Distributor Fox Searchlight plans to expand "Night Watch" to about 150
theaters by March 3.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Monday at U.S. and Canadian
theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. Final figures will
be released Tuesday.
1. "Eight Below," $25 million.
2. "Date Movie," $22.3 million.
3. "The Pink Panther," $21 million.
4. "Curious George," $15.3 million.
5. "Final Destination 3," $12.5 million.
6. "Firewall," $10.3 million.
7. "Freedomland," $7 million.
8. "Big Momma's House 2," $5.85 million.
9. "When a Stranger Calls," $5.8 million.
10. "Nanny McPhee," $5.1 million.

I think she looks luscious in the photo where she is heavier (and she ain't
heavy -- not by a long shot), but maybe that is just my taste. I don't like
how square her body looks in the thinner photo.

Some people are just naturally thin (Alyson Hannigan from Buffy the Vampire
Slayer comes to mind). They look good thin. Others, like Sarah Michelle
Gellar, from the same show, don't have that thin body type but aren't fat or
even heavy by any stetch of the imagination. However, when they diet to be
as thin as their naturally thin co-stars, it just doesn't look as good on
them.

Regardless of your definition or the network's definition of what "first"
means, in every dictionary I've ever known, "first" means it came "first".
And between the pilot and your so-called first episode, the pilot was first.

Kirsten Dunst does not look anorexic. She looks right for her frame. She
doesn't look unnatural. Alyson Hannigan is very slender, but she, too,
looks just right for her frame. Others, like Lara Flynn Boyle or Sarah
Michelle Gellar or Ms. Ricci, look way too thin for their frames. They look
anorexic. It's difficult for me to explain the difference, but I know it.
I lived in a dorm with many anorexic women, and two member of my family
suffered from anorexia and bulimia. I recognize it when I see it. When I
see a woman who is slender naturally, well, she just doesn't look starved
and peaked the way an anorexic woman does.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
Will Ross and Rachel finally live happily ever after?
That's the question that has had "Friends" fans on the edge of their seats —
until tonight, when the wildly popular sitcom goes off the air after 10 years
at the top of the ratings heap.
Will Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) talk Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) out of
moving to Paris, or will he decide to go with her?
Over the years, the hapless couple has had more ups and downs than a roller
coaster.
The ups:
1. After countless missed opportunities, they reveal their true feelings and
finally get together for the first time. 2. They tie the knot during a drunken
visit to Las Vegas. 3. They have a baby, Emma.
The downs:
1. Ross sleeps with another woman after an argument with Rachel because, as he
explains in what would become one of the show's most famous lines, "We were on
a break!" 2. They tie the knot during a drunken visit to Las Vegas — and it
is annulled. 3. He accidentally utters true love Rachel's name during his
wedding to Emily. 4. Rachel hooks up with Joey.
So here's to a happy ending for Ross and Rachel — and the stars who brought
them to life!
David Schwimmer
David Schwimmer gave "Friends" little chance of becoming a hit when he shot the
pilot.
The guy who made viewers root for Ross Eustace Geller thought he'd be lucky if
it even lasted until the end of the season.
"I had done some bad movies, a couple of small TV parts and a failed series,"
says the 37-year-old star. "So I figured this show was just a temporary thing.
"I was sleeping on a futon in a friend's living room for two months before the
pilot. I never thought it would be this big. In fact, none of us did. It was
instant chemistry."
Schwimmer was even more shocked that he became an unlikely sex symbol.
"I never felt good enough or good-looking enough there," he says of his days at
Beverly Hills High School, where he was the self-confessed class clown, always
in trouble.
"I was chubby and a nerd," he recalls.
While it was soon obvious the series had staying power, Ross' high-strung pet
monkey, Marcel, wasn't so lucky — he got the boot after the first season.
"Either the monkey goes or I do," Schwimmer told the producers, who wrote the
primate out by sending him off to the San Diego Zoo.
Schwimmer is often credited by his cast mates as the brains behind their
one-for-all, all-for-one approach to dealing with the brass, especially when it
came to salary negotiations.
"If some idea came down, like 'Will you guys do this one thing?' then, as a
group we would go in a room, privately talk about it, debate the pros and cons,
and then decide," Schwimmer says.
"Luckily, that stuck...
"But I didn't realize the power it would eventually wield us in terms of our
negotiations," adds the actor, whose parents are lawyers.
In the last two seasons of "Friends," each of the stars earned more than $1
million per episode.
On the show, Schwimmer's character made three trips to the altar, but in real
life, the actor is in no rush to wear a wedding ring.
"I believe love at first sight is possible, yes," Schwimmer says. "But for me,
real love takes a little more time."
During "Friends," he's had a string of romances, including with Australian
singer Natalie Imbruglia and Israeli actress Mili Avital.
Still, Schwimmer — who lives alone in an $8 million Georgian-style mansion in
Beverly Hills — has high hopes of finding Ms. Right.
"I think it will be the biggest decision of my entire life," he says of
settling down.
"My parents are still happily married, and that proves to me that it can last
forever.
"It's important for me to be a father, have a healthy family life and be happy.
I'm just an old-fashioned guy."
Schwimmer — who had a recurring role on last season's "Curb Your Enthusiasm"
— has starred in a string of film flops since shooting to fame in "Friends."
But he's hoping that will all change with his next movie "Duane Hopwood,"
co-starring Janeane Garofalo.
The 6-foot-2 actor will also be directing some episodes of the "Friends"
spinoff "Joey," starring Matt LeBlanc. And he's currently directing
"Americana," a pilot for NBC starring Alyson Hannigan.
Schwimmer's Favorite Episode: "The One With the Prom Video" (Season 2). "It's
the whole history of the origins of the relationship between Ross and Rachel,"
he says.
Jennifer Aniston
From the moment she was cast as reformed spoiled little rich girl Rachel,
Jennifer Aniston instantly hit it off with the actors who would become her best
"Friends." But she did have a few reservations about Matt LeBlanc.
"I always laugh at our past because I used to be terrified of him," says
Aniston. "He was leather, head to toe — one of those guys. And all you're
thinking is, 'Oh, he's going to try to get me into bed. I can just see it a
mile away.'
"Then he turned out to be the sweetest, most lovable man," she adds. "I just
love him. He's a brother."
When "Friends" first hit the air, Aniston — the daughter of legendary soap
star John Aniston — was hot and heavy with actor Tate Donovan, who now stars
on "The O.C."
They eventually split, but heartache turned to happiness when Aniston met and
fell in love with box-office heartthrob Brad Pitt, now 40.
Their July 2000 wedding sealed their status as a Hollywood supercouple, and
with her series behind her, they're focusing on having a baby.
"We're absolutely in the process," Aniston, 35, says of impending parenthood.
"It's where we're headed."
The one place they're not headed, at least for now, is a movie starring the two
of them. (Do Bennifer and "Gigli" ring any bells?)
"You look at past case studies of couples working together in films, and the
odds are really against us," Pitt says.
His wife echoes the sentiment: "We wouldn't want to go out there with
bull's-eyes on our heads."
For the time being, they'll have to settle for their memories of Pitt's
guest-starring role on "Friends."
In the Season 8 episode, "The One with the Rumor," Pitt played an old
high-school pal who shared a teenage weight problem with Monica. He wasn't
exactly a member of Rachel's fan club.
"We had so much fun doing that show, and it was fun for me to have him come
into my world and see what this was all about," Aniston says.
"And he so admired it, and it was great. But boy, I've never seen anybody so
nervous."
Another "Friends" memory she still can't get out of her head is the craze her
shaggy "Rachel" haircut sparked in 1994.
The irony, she says, is that her hair — which she describes as "too fuzzy,
too kinky" — "was always like a thorn in my side." Of the six "Friends"
stars, Aniston has had the most successful big-screen career, including the
recent hit comedy "Along Came Polly," with Ben Stiller.
Her per-flick asking price is reportedly expected to double from $5 million to
$10 million.
She hopes to continue that track record with two upcoming movies — a remake
of the 1966 British movie "Gambit" and a project inspired by the 1967 classic
"The Graduate."
In between, she'll continue to make time for her "Friends."
"Every single person in this cast is my family," she says.
"They're not leaving my life — there's just no way."
Aniston's Favorite Episode: "The One Where Rachel Has a Baby" (Season 8), which
she calls "powerful" and "just funny."

Perhaps they'll do to Milla what FHM did to Alyson Hannigan for her "end
of Buffy" shoot. Her cover shot for that is shocking. Her breasts look
like..... ekk. They're just horrible. Just leave em as they are stupid

[on her role as the witch Willow, crossing over from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" to act in the episode "Orpheus" on the series "Angel," where fiance Alexis Denisof is a regular:] "I finally get to spend a day with my honey, so that's really nervous coming in. I had butterflies in my stomach. I don't know why I was so nervous -- maybe because I don't know how to pronounce half the lines I have to say today. They're in some made-up language."
"It was great for a change to share a week's work, rather than being on different projects. With the hours Alexis and I spend on set you can tend to pass like ships in the night.
