Academy Awards 2006 trivia
PICS: Brokeback Mountain leads an open race for the Oscars
Dame Judi Dench'>Judi Dench is nominated for Mrs Henderson Presents
Steven Spielberg is one of the most successful Oscars producers
The Academy Awards will be handed out in Hollywood on 5 March.
Now in its 78th year, the ceremony has long fascinated movie fans
with its mix of glamour, suspense and surprise.
Here are some of snippets of trivia about this year's event:
Brokeback Mountain leads the nominations with eight. It is the most
open Oscars race since 2000, the last time a film topped the list with
eight nominations (American Beauty). The leading films in subsequent
years have received between 11-13 nominations each.
It is a good year for Oscars newcomers - 14 of the 20 acting nominees
have not been nominated before, the highest number for nine years.
The remaining six have 13 previous nominations and four awards
between them.
It is a good year for low-budget films - only one of the best picture
nominees had a budget over $15m (£8.6m), according to the Internet
Movie Database. Munich is the most expensive, with a reported $75m
(£43m) budget.
Among the best picture nominees, Crash led the US box office takings
at the time of the nominations with $55m (£32m), followed by Brokeback
Mountain's $42m (£24m).
For the first time in 25 years, all five nominees for best picture have also
been nominated for best director - only the fourth time in Oscars history
that the shortlists have been the same.
At 71, Dame Judi Dench'>Judi Dench is the oldest best actress nominee since 80-year-old
Jessica Tandy won for Driving Miss Daisy in 1990. Dame Judi is nominated
for her role in Mrs Henderson Presents.
Keira Knightley, 20, who is shortlisted for Pride and Prejudice, would be the
youngest best actress winner if she won. The current record is held by
Marlee Matlin, who won for Children of a Lesser God in 1987, aged 21.
If Heath Ledger wins best actor for Brokeback Mountain, the 26-year-old
would be the youngest winner of the award. Adrien Brody, who was 29
when he won for The Pianist in 2003, currently holds the record.
Ledger's girlfriend Michelle Williams is nominated for best supporting actress.
The pair met while filming Brokeback Mountain and had a daughter in October.
George Clooney is the first person to be nominated for acting in and directing
different films in the same year. He is up for best supporting actor for his
role in Syriana, plus best director and best original screenplay for Good Night,
and Good Luck.
Clooney is only the fifth person to be nominated for acting, directing and
writing in the same year - following Orson Welles (1942), Woody Allen (1978),
Warren Beatty (1979 and 1982) and Roberto Benigni (1999).
With Munich, Steven Spielberg has produced a total of five films with best
picture nominations - one behind record-holder Stanley Kramer and tied
with Francis Ford Coppola. He has also been nominated for best director
six times.
Woody Allen has received his 21st career nomination for best original
screenplay for Match Point. He has received more screenplay nominations
than any other writer in Oscars history with 14. He has also been nominated
for best director six times and best actor once, winning a total of three times.
Composer John Williams has two nominations for best original score for
writing music for Munich and Memoirs of a Geisha. It takes his career
nominations tally to 40 - one behind best score record-holder Alfred
Newman. Williams has won five times.

Spielberg rushing to get his Munich film out on time
06/11/2005 - 13:57:08
Movie-maker Steven Spielberg is promising film fans and critics his new
movie about the 1972 Olympics will hit cinemas on time next month, even
though composer John Williams is struggling with the score.
Spielberg is in a real race to complete the film, Munich, in time for the
all-important Oscars consideration period this side of Christmas - even
though the film seems far from finished, according to new movie awards
website TheEnvelope.com.
The controversial drama about the hunting down of Palestinian militants who
killed 11 Israeli athletes at the Olympic Games only finished filming in
late September and Williams has yet to record a single note for the
soundtrack.
But Spielberg insists his film will hit cinemas on time.
The director's spokesman Marvin Levy says: "There aren't many movies like
this, which start shooting around July 1 and plan to be in theatres on
December 23. But it will get done. Munich's production is moving forward
exactly as it should."
According to the new Los Angeles Times website, which will monitor all the
movie awards leading up to the Oscars, 8 December is the last possible day
Munich can be considered for the early press awards. Golden Globe ballots
are due on 10 December.
Many critics, who vote on the ballots, have been told they'll see the film
in early December.

Steven Spielberg Will Not Be Working With Tom Cruise Again, "Will Never
Call Him His Friend"...
The New York Post
TOM Cruise shouldn't wait by the phone for his old "friend" Steven
Spielberg, who directed him in "War of the Worlds," to call.
Reports from Budapest and Paris, where Spielberg is filming "Munich,"
say the director is still steamed at Cruise for ranting, during what
were supposed to be promotional appearances for the Martian-invasion
film, against the widespread use of Ritalin to treat unruly children
diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder.
One source said: "Steven and his wife [Kate Capshaw] have five children
themselves and know some children for whom Ritalin does a lot of good.
They took exception to what Tom said about the drug."
Spielberg was also said to be annoyed that Cruise played up Scientology
more than the movie during press interviews.
In August, when PAGE SIX started researching this story, we received a
letter from Cruise's lawyer Bert Fields, noting:
"We have received word that you are planning a report that Steven
Spielberg was upset with Tom about Tom's speaking out about his views
on children's use of drugs . . . and that now they are not speaking to
each other."
The letter stated: "Each of these statements is absolutely and
demonstrably false. Steven is not upset with Tom . . . Tom and Steven
remain close friends and are looking forward to working together again.
The idea that they are not speaking is not only false but absurd.
Actually Steven is shooting a movie in Budapest and Tom is shooting one
[in the States]."
But maybe Fields should have talked to Spielberg before writing this
letter.
Another source, a close friend of the director, said: "They will not be
working together again and Steven will never call him his friend."
When we faxed Fields' letter to Spielberg rep Marvin Levy and asked for
comment, Levy first wanted to settle the score about another item
picked up from a Web site claiming the director insisted on being
called "Maestro."
Levy said: "Whoever fed you that ridiculous item about Steven Spielberg
wanting to be called 'Maestro' with no eye contact must have had a bad
serving of goulash. The only person in our film community who might be
called 'Maestro' is [conductor] John Williams and only when he's on the
podium holding a baton. I will get back to you on the other item after
I talk to Steven."
Levy called back to "decline comment."

I realize Arianna Huffington is a Californian who never met a camera
she did not like, or never used her cleverness for anything other than
her own causes and agenda. So here is a bit of news. The world does not
revolve around Hollywood.
Capernicus discovered that planets revolve around the sun. There is
obviously an attempt to make Cruise into what Huffington is, an
egomaniac who can't get enough of self. There can be no doubt,
so-called celebrities think of themselves as above the common man. The
aftermath of Katrina is about these concerts by big name stars who want
everyone to know they care.
Well, to all you star gazers who think their lives revolve around their

Cruise has jumped the shark. It doesn't mean that his opinions are not
wrong or that he couldn't contribute anything to the debate, but the
Scientology connection is discrediting.
Religious fundementalist object to science. Scientologist compete with
drug companies for the same market. Where is the public interest? Its
not there.
If he wants to speak out against drug companies, that's fine. But to do
so as a proxy for Scientology, that's suspect.
And jumping up and down about a relationship with a women nearly 20
years his junior doesn't help his credibility.
One of my Sci-fi buff friends thinks that Scientology was the result of
a bet that L. Ron Hubbard made with another Sci-Fi writer, Hubbard
betting that he could invent a religion... Voila.
>From what I have read, Scientology is just a metaphore for
Psychological theories.
Having said that, if it does Tom some good fine. But religion is
personal, keep it to your self, and keep it out of business and the
work place. His failure to do that may do to him what is would likely
do to all of us, ruin our careers. As it should.
