Solo: Melanie C is adamant the Spice Girls won't get back together.
Q & A with Melanie C
Cameron Adams talks to Melanie C about avoiding the UK and the chance of a
Spice Girls reunion.
01jun06
You have concentrated your solo career in Europe and your song First Day of
My Life has been No.1 in Germany, Switzerland and Spain, and in the Top 10
in Austria, Belgium, Portugal.
Yeah. It's gone bonkers. This album (Beautiful Intentions) has been such a
slow build everywhere, releasing in different times in different territories
on different labels. It feels like the never-ending album. It's outsold my
second album, and I think that's quite an achievement considering that was
on a major label worldwide.
Did you deliberately avoid the UK because you'd been getting some bad press?
Kind of. The UK is such a big, influential market. Some people are quite
happy to just work here. It's nice to not travel so much, to be at home and
see your friends and loved ones more. But there's a lot of s--- that comes
with it. I've found it nice being successful outside the UK, then coming
home and being anonymous.
The UK press seems to be waiting for you to fail . . .
Yeah, you have to have a thick skin. Any opportunity to have a dig, they
will. But I've lived with that for 10 years, it's nothing new to me, it
doesn't hurt me any more. I'm actually contemplating re-releasing the album
in the UK. It'd be interesting to see how First Day goes here. I have a lot
of fans in the UK.
First Day of My Life was written by Guy Chambers and Enrique Iglesias, and
first recorded by Andrea Bocelli. How did it come into your life?
I was asked to sing a song for a German telenovela called Julia, which is
like a long-running soap. They're really big in Germany and Portugal. They
wanted to use Better Alone but it didn't work with the storyline, so we
looked for other songs, and this was perfect, lyrically and musically. It's
a great song, very uplifting.
So Enrique Iglesias wrote it but never used it?
Yeah. I bet he's kicking himself now.
Guy Chambers wrote songs with Robbie Williams and you used to date Robbie .
. . do you ever swap Robbie stories with Guy?
Ah, no, we don't swap Robbie stories. Guy spent a long time with Robbie.
They've written some of the best pop songs of the past 10 years together. He
has a lot of Robbie history. Quite often Robbie's name comes up, but we
don't really gossip about him.
What's your favourite Robbie/Guy song?
There are just so many . . . Rock DJ is unique, no other artist could have
carried that off.
Bryan Adams re-recorded your duet, When You're Gone, with Pamela Anderson
taking your part. Were you gutted?
I haven't heard it. It was used on the North American version of his
greatest-hits album; the rest of the world was me and him.
Do you still perform When You're Gone live?
I do. It is such a great song for festivals, so many people know it. Often
at a festival you perform to people who may not be your fans, so it gets
people jumping up and down.
Do you still do Spice Girls songs?
On my first tour I used to do a punk version of Wannabe. That's the only
Spice song I've ever done solo. I'm sure people would like to hear them, but
my solo music is so different from what I did with the girls.
When did you last play a Spice Girls album?
Now, there's a question. A very long time ago. Let me think . . . because we
didn't spend a lot of time promoting the last album, Forever, I think I
stuck it on a few months ago. There are some beautiful ballads on it. I'm
not that familiar with that record, my heart wasn't in it at the time. I
think we released only one single off it.
You didn't sound so comfortable going all R&B . . .
I was having personal problems at the time, I'd done some solo songs, I was
over it. I didn't want to be there any more. It was difficult. I feel sad
about that time. Maybe it was a mistake to be part of the third album, maybe
I should have moved on sooner.
Are you still adamant you won't take part in a Spice Girls re-formation?
Absolutely. There were new dates for a Spice Girls re-formation tour in a
newspaper a few weeks ago. That was news to me! I haven't changed my mind, I
haven't had any discussions.
I was approached earlier in the year,
I took a long time thinking about it. My heart and my head said no. It's not
something I want to do. That has not changed.
There was some talk that you would record a new song for a best-of to
celebrate 10 years since Wannabe was released.
I can't ever see a time when I will get into the studio with the other girls
and record again. Sometimes I think it would be nice to perform for
something. I thought Live8 was a shame, that would have been the perfect
opportunity to do something worthwhile. I have such great memories of how we
were, and I think everybody else has too. I don't think we could do it
again. I would really rather be remembered for how we were than spoil it
with a reunion.
Do you think the demand to re-form is there?
I think it's mixed. I think most people would like to see it, but probably
more out of curiosity than anything!

Pop superstar ROBBIE WILLIAMS will join his former band TAKE THAT for
a one-off performance on their comeback tour.
The group, who have reformed for the British trek which kicks off
later this month (APR06), had previously told fans that Williams would
not be taking part.
An insider tells British newspaper The Sun, "Robbie has agreed to
appear at one of the Take That gigs in Manchester. They are working out
schedules and haven't yet decided which of the dates it will be.
"But it is a done deal. Everyone involved has been sworn to secrecy.
"Robbie will be there to sing one number. They are working out all

Williams wanted for Bond theme tune
12/12/2005 - 10:09:25
British pop star Robbie Williams has been approached to sing the theme tune
to the next James Bond movie.
Veteran singer Tony Christie has written a song he believes suits the former
Take That star's voice perfectly and it is a contender to accompany Casino
Royale.
He says: "Robbie's voice would suit it down to the ground - plus he's
current and hip so it would be absolutely great if he did it. We tried to
make it a typical Bond theme tune with a throbbing dramatic bassline filling
the background.
"I'm a huge fan of the old school 007 songs like Shirley Bassey with
Goldfinger and Tom Jones singing Thunderball, so I tried to give it that
authentic sound. We are due to record it in February."

Williams's e-mail stalker in court
December 8, 2005 - 12:08PM
A German court today issued a restraining order against a woman who claimed
that she wanted to protect British pop star Robbie Williams from
"supernatural forces".
The woman has been ordered not to come within 200 metres of the singer and
to stop sending emails to him and his management team, said a spokesman for
the regional court in Duesseldorf, in western Germany.
If she breaches the order, she will be fined ?250,000 ($392,000).
Williams performed in Germany in October to promote his latest album,
Intensive Care, and was due to come to Duesseldorf on Saturday to take part
in a television game show.
Yesterday, he won undisclosed libel damages in London's High Court over
false claims in a tabloid newspaper and two magazines that he was secretly
homosexual.

Robbie: I'm NOT gay
by NICOLE LAMPERT, Daily Mail
08:44am 7th December 2005
Robbie Williams: Often likes to joke about the rumours
He jokes about his sexuality and once sang: "Am I straight or gay?"
Now, at last, the great Robbie Williams debate appears to have been settled.
The star's lawyer has declared that the singer is, in fact, heterosexual.
The announcement came after Williams won a case against three publications
for saying he was gay.
The singer accepted libel damages of more than £200,000 after a newspaper
and two magazines claimed his official biography was deceiving the public by
leaving out his homosexual experiences.
His counsel, Tom Shields QC, told the High Court the publications had agreed
to the out-of-court settlement, which included costs, after admitting they
were wrong. He added: "Mr Williams is not, and has never been, homosexual."
Ironically, on the very day that 31-year-old Williams won his case, he was
once again joking that he might be gay.
"There is plenty of time to settle down with the right girl - that's of
course if I'm not gay," he said on The Today Show, a national breakfast-time
programme in Australia.
"That's what they keep suggesting, but I'm not gay in Australia. I'm gay in
a lot of places, but not there for some reason.
"It's the love that dare not speak its name and they'll say it's the basis
of all my shame."
Williams sued The People and the Northern & Shell magazines Star and Hot
Stars over claims that he had sex with a man in a lavatory at a Manchester
club when he was in the boy band Take That.
The story, first printed in The People under the headline Robbie's Secret
Lover, went on to claim that Williams had tried to have sex with the man
again later the same year.
The claims came out at the same time as the singer's biography Feel, by
journalist Chris Heath, and suggested Williams was about to deceive the
public by pretending his only sexual relations had been with women.
His counsel said none of the allegations were true and, "accordingly, the
book Feel did not lie about his sexuality". Rumours have surrounded the
star's sexuality since he first found fame in Take That.
His former bandmate Howard Donald said in a recent documentary: "Robbie just
doesn't know what he is. It wouldn't surprise me if he was bisexual."
The man who briefly managed him after he left the band, Kevin Kinsella, has
also gone on record to say he believes Williams is gay.
The singer has often joked about the rumours, including saying his friend
Jonathan Wilkes and former writing partner Guy Chambers - who are both
married - were his gay lovers.
He has twice written songs questioning his own sexuality.
In Old Before I Die, he sings: "Am I straight or gay", while in Kids, the
lyrics say: "Press be asking do I care for sodomy, I don't know, yeah,
probably".
Although he says he is desperate to settle down with a woman and start a
family, the singer has not had a serious relationship since splitting with
former All Saints singer Nicole Appleton seven years ago.
He admitted that naked pictures taken of him and onetime flame Rachel Hunter
were a publicity stunt, while questions have also been raised about another
very public relationship with former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell.

Hardman rapper 50 CENT has branded ROBBIE WILLIAMS a "sucker" after the
British singer complained about his behaviour when they stayed at the
same German hotel in October (05).
The CANDY SHOP star, real name CURTIS JACKSON, and former boyband
member Williams both checked into the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Berlin, but
trouble reportedly brewed when Williams' fans mistook 50 Cent's car for
the former TAKE THAT singers' and greeted the rapper chanting, "Robbie,
Robbie."
The situation escalated when Williams later complained to hotel
management, demanding they curb the hip-hop wildman's late night
antics.
But 50 Cent has another explanation for their falling out - Williams
felt humiliated because the hip-hop star refused to meet him.
He says, "He's a sucker. He said I was keeping him awake.
"I know he wanted to meet me but I didn't have time. Maybe that's why
he was upset." (SC/WNSNE/SH)

up in 1996.
Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Jason Orange and Mark Owen'>Mark Owen announced at a
London news conference on Friday that they are reuniting for an 11-date
arena tour starting in April.
Interest in the band assembled by talent scout Nigel Martin-Smith has
revived with a documentary about their glory days and the release of a
compilation album of greatest hits like "A Million Love Songs" and
"Back For Good."
"It is kind of now or never for all of us," Mark Owen'>Mark Owen told reporters.
"I think if we don't do it now, we probably never could."
Gary Barlow, whose pop chart rivalry with Robbie Williams'>Robbie Williams was rich
tabloid fodder when they both went solo, said he would love to have
Robbie on tour with them.
"But we do respect that's not going to happen," he said. "Rob's got his
own deal going on and we obviously wish him the best with that."
The band's winning combination of boy-next-door imagery mixed with a
whiff of teenage fantasy proved irresistible to young girls throughout
the world and became the blueprint for boy bands everywhere.
The quintet of Manchester lads spawned a multi-million pound industry
complete with risque videos, pouting posters and a host of marketing
spin-offs like Take That plastic dolls.
Success in Britain was quickly followed by fame in the rest of Europe
and Asia with a rare breakthrough in the U.S. market in the latter
stages of their career.
Williams was the first to quit the band -- in July 1995 -- and he has
achieved by far the greatest stardom as a solo singer.

Robbie's New Toy
Prepare to see Robbie Williams kitted out in a sailing suit and captain's
hat - he's bought himself a yacht.
And the ultimate showman obviously wouldn't be happy with anything less than
the ultimate boat.
According to The Sun, he's spent a whopping £8million on the luxury boys'
toy - a top of the range 115ft Athena cruiser from Italy's leading boat
company, Riva.
It's the biggest and the most expensive bit of kit they've got and he's
named it 'My RW'.
They're his initials, in case you hadn't worked it out.
A source said: "Robbie is keen to escape the limelight when he can. He felt
the boat was the perfect way to disappear without being recognised.
Er, we may be simple land-lubbers, but wouldn't the initials on the side of
the boat be a bit of a giveaway? And besides, we've got dinghies.
The source added: "He is going to keep it in the Med so he can enjoy
sun-soaked holidays a short hop from his flat in London."
Robbie is unlikely to be lonely on the open waves though. His boat is so
big, it sleeps 24 people and that's not even counting the eight crew.
Happy boating.

Williams excludes America
22/11/2005 - 09:18:14
British pop star Robbie Williams is refusing to release his latest single
Intensive Care in the US - because no one there knows who he is.
The Angels hitmaker is one of the UK's biggest selling artists after
shooting to fame in boyband Take That, but can wander the streets of America
inconspicuously, despite making Los Angeles his home.
And in a bid to preserve his anonymity in the country, he has chosen not to
publicise or release his new record.
Williams says: "I live in America. Nobody knows me there. I can pick my
nose. get away with a lot of things that I wouldn't be able to get away with
in the rest of the world, and then everywhere else I go I'm a pop star.
"And it's fun - it's like being Batman."

Robbie Williams: Revealed Secret Romance With Naomi Campbell
November 21, 2005, 6:24:10
ROBBIE AND NAOMI HAD SECRET ROMANCE
British pop star ROBBIE WILLIAMS secretly enjoyed a raunchy year-long affair
with NAOMI CAMPBELL'>NAOMI CAMPBELL in 2001 - even though the model was in a serious
relationship with racing mogul FLAVIO BRIATORE.
Campbell's former personal assistant REBECCA WHITE claims she accidentally
caught the pair in the throes of passion in the catwalk queen's London flat.
But far from being embarrassed, they simply ordered her to arrange snacks to
keep their energy levels up.
White tells the News Of The World, "The first time I actually met him was
that day in February 2001 when I walked into Naomi's bedroom and found them
cuddled up in her bed.
"It was the apartment Naomi shared with Flavio, with whom she was supposed
to be having a serious relationship.
"Naomi didn't try to hide that she was cheating on Flavio. I lived in the
apartment below and every few hours they would summon me up to bring them
food and drink."
It was further revealed that
CAMPBELL'S JEALOUSY OVER WILLIAMS' GUY
Supermodel NAOMI CAMPBELL'>NAOMI CAMPBELL was enraged when former secret lover ROBBIE
WILLIAMS' door was answered by a hunky guy in "very short shorts", during
their affair in 2001.
The catwalk queen enjoyed a year-long love-tryst with the British pop star
despite being attached to racing mogul FLAVIO BRIATORE.
But according to her former personal assistant REBECCA WHITE, Campbell's
intense jealousy "suffocated" the cheeky hitmaker.

Flavio is not into "serious" relationships.
And Heidi Klum was claiming Flavio was her boyfriend but throught the whole
"relationship" with Flavio she was shagging Seal! Flavio knew and didn't
care because he had younger models he was after and he never cared for Heidi
or wanted to be with her.
What relevance doe this have now for Robby to bring it up..given it true
that him and Naomi had a couple of shags? From all accounts Naomi and Flavio
despite being exes have a close relationship. Flavio gave her his most
prized yaught for her birthday last year and they really do seem to be very
close and friendly up to thi day..unlike Flav and Heidi who despite (or
because of) Heidi falling pregnant are completely estranged.

MEXICO CITY - British pop star Robbie Williams says he's not planning
to release his latest record, "Intensive Care," in the United States
because he's more popular in Europe.
"I live in America. Nobody knows me there," he said at a news
conference. "I can pick my nose ... get away with a lot of things that
I wouldn't be able to get away with in the rest of the world, and then
everywhere else I go I'm a pop star," he added.
"And it's fun - it's like being Batman."
Williams said "Intensive Care" had changed his life perspective. He
explained that for the first time he took part in the full musical
composing process, not just writing the lyrics and the melody to songs.
"I do have songwriting ability," he said. "Before I only imagined it.
... That means the world to me."
Williams made a name for himself on the British pop scene as a member
of Take That, one of the most successful boy bands of the '90s.

Obviously that last sentence should read "...readers with an average IQ
of 15...".
