By Stephen M. Silverman
Though she goes light on the makeup, Gwyneth Paltrow will be the new
face of the cosmetics giant Est=E9e Lauder.
An international print and TV advertising campaign for Pleasures
fragrance featuring the 32-year-old Shakespeare in Love Oscar winner
will begin this fall, USA Today reports.
Of her new career turn, the London-based Paltrow is quoted as saying:
"Years ago, endorsing a product was considered something a movie
actress shouldn't do, but now having a contract is almost like a status
symbol."
Other than a small role in the upcoming movie Running with Scissors
(which also stars Annette Bening and Evan Rachel Wood), the Lauder job
reportedly is Paltrow's first since the birth of daughter Apple, whose
first birthday was May 14. Dad is Paltrow's husband, Chris Martin of
Coldplay - which played the Saturday Night Live season finale
Saturday in New York, where the couple is said to be selling their
apartment.
To a working mom, Paltrow says, modeling for Lauder "allows me to be
with my daughter, which is what I want to do until some fantastic movie
role comes along and makes me change my mind."
Last week, in a revealing interview with London's Evening Standard,
Paltrow admitted that after her father, Bruce, died in October 2002
following a recurrence of throat cancer, she battled clinical
depression and fought through feelings of guilt at not having done
enough for him during his illness.
What eventually got her through the grief was the birth of her daughter
Apple. "She's been very healing for us - for myself, my brother, my
mother," said Paltrow, referring to actress Blythe Danner. "For me, the
greatest joy before I gave birth to (Apple) was the idea that she would
be one-quarter my father."
Paltrow also said she had embraced a new outlook on life. "I'm not as
stringent as I was in the past," said Paltrow, who used to adhere to a
strict macrobiotic diet. "Now I'll have cheese once in a while or white
flour, but I still believe in whole grains and no sugar."

Teen actress Evan Rachel Wood will star in director Julie Taymor's
untitled musical that will use classic Beatles songs.
The story centers on an American girl (Wood) and a British boy and is
set against the backdrop of the social upheaval of the 1960s. Although
not about the Fab Four, the musical will use their songs to drive the
narrative, with the actors singing and dancing to the classic tunes.

Tommy Lee Jones saddles up
For Tommy Lee, his work is his play
By STEVE TILLEY -- Edmonton Sun
NEW YORK -- Tommy Lee Jones has a reputation as big as his native Texas.
And to no surprise, it always precedes him.
He has a reputation as an actor, certainly, but also as a famously thorny
interview subject whose outbursts have become the stuff of legend among
those journalists unlucky enough to have borne witness to his temper.
There's a reason Jones is often tapped by directors to play gruff, tough,
fiercely intelligent characters - that's who he is in real life. He does not
suffer fools, gladly or otherwise, especially fools armed with notebooks and
tape recorders asking foolish questions about foolish things.
Thus, approaching a one-on-one interview with Jones for his new
Western-cum-thriller The Missing is sort of like petting the neighbour's pit
bull. You want to move slowly and carefully, offering your hand to the
animal in a nervous gesture of friendship and hoping it comes back with the
same number of fingers attached.
As it turns out, Jones's storied bark is worse than his actual bite. Or
maybe, like a fine wine, the 56-year-old has mellowed with age. Or it could
be he's simply in a relatively docile mood on this particular sunny Saturday
morning in a Manhattan hotel suite. No-nonsense but cordial, dressed in a
shirt, tie and pressed pants, Jones is perfectly happy to shake hands and
answer questions. About the movie. And only the movie.
If you want to stay on his good side, don't bring up his college friendship
with former Harvard roommate (and later, vice president) Al Gore, or his
sometimes troubled relationships with women and his family, or (especially)
his reputation as a bully, both on and offset.
Instead, you could try mentioning that perhaps Jones has a good sense of
irony but no sense of humour, and see where that takes you.
"I don't know," he responds flatly. "I'm not a self-analytical guy, really."
Or you could wonder if his young co-stars in the upcoming comedy Cheer Up,
about a Texas Ranger who must protect a group of cheerleaders, are
intimidated by his presence.
"These girls are not going to be intimidated," he growls. "They're going to
co-operate and work as a company. They're responsible actors, and
responsible actors don't get intimidated."
OK then. Back to the movie at hand. The Missing, opening in theatres
Wednesday, stars Jones as a wanderer named Jones (honest) who returns to the
frontier homestead of his estranged daughter (Cate Blanchett) in search of
physical and spiritual healing.
Blanchett's fiercely independent mother of two wants none of dad's attempts
at reconciliation, but when her elder daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) is
kidnapped by a creepy shaman (Northwest Territories-born Eric Schweig) and
his outlaws, she needs dad's help to track them down through the wilderness.
Directed by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13), The Missing - or
rather, the marketing forces behind it - seem to be doing everything
possible to avoid the dreaded "Western" tag, opting for the term thriller
instead. Even the trailers look more X-Files than Unforgiven.
"It's become a pejorative term," explains Jones. "A lot of so-called
Westerns were made, and they made a lot of money. Many more attempts were
made to exploit that success, a lot of bad movies were made, and the term
came to imply a money-losing proposition.
"Those movies weren't very realistic. You'd find Monument Valley (Arizona)
passed off as Texas. You'd see lots of quick-draw gunplay. And you'd see
lots of native Americans chasing stagecoaches and howling at the moon and
looking for chances to lift your scalp."
So then, is The Missing a Western, or isn't it?
"If it means a movie that deals with the history of the southwest in the
19th century, then this is a western. It's got horses in it, and guns, and
dust, and fighting, and Indians. And," he says, nearly cracking a smile, "it
has a log cabin."
The Missing was a physically demanding shoot for Jones and the rest of the
cast and crew, given that the majority of it was filmed on outdoor sets in
the New Mexico wilderness. While Jones is an accomplished horseman - he
lives on a ranch near San Antonio and is a passionate polo player - the
forces of nature took their toll.
"The movie started out in the mountains in a foot and a half of snow," he
says. "As the weather warmed up, it turned into a foot and a half of mud.
"As the characters embarked on their journey, the movie company went with
them. We came out of the mountains down into the ravines, canyons and rocks
of the foothills, and then on into the heat and extreme wind of the desert.
And then we got to enjoy the flash flood."
Jones isn't all work and no play, though. Or rather, his work is his play.
He'd love to do a third Men in Black movie ("there's lots of talking, lots
of speculation, much hurling of gauntlets and swearing of oaths and all that
preliminary noise") and he's having a good time with Cheer Up.
"They're fun," he says of comedies. "It's quite difficult, but I like it a
lot. The main reason I like it a lot is it is the job I have today. That's
the most important thing."
His co-stars have nothing but good things to say about Jones, and he of
them. Particularly Cate Blanchett, whose standout performance as Maggie
Gilkeson in The Missing is generating some Oscar buzz.
"She has all the qualities that you look for in an actor," he says of
Blanchett. "She's well-educated, well-trained, always on time, she knows her
lines. She's generous. She's not at all egotistical, she's not paranoid.
She's free. Thoughtful. Utterly fearless. And perfect."
And would she say the same of him? At this, Jones - for the first time
during this chat, and perhaps proving that he's more puppy dog than pit
bull - laughs out loud.
"No. She'd say, 'Where'd you get that stupid redneck name?' "
THE TOUGH GUY TALKS TOUGH
Prickly. Tough as nails. No nonsense. A manly man. Is it Tommy Lee Jones, or
the character he's playing?
In most cases it's both. The 56-year-old actor, who plays a white man living
amongst the Apache people of the American southwest in The Missing, is a
tough-guy actor who's made his mark playing tough-guy roles. We compiled a
small sampling of some of Mr. Jones's thick-skinned cinematic alter-egos
from the past decade, with a sample quote from each.
THE HUNTED (2003) - L. T. Bonham, retired special forces commander. "If I'm
not back in two days, it'll mean I'm dead."
SPACE COWBOYS (2000) - Col. William "Hawk" Hawkins, former test pilot turned
astronaut. "What is a pancreas, anyhow? I mean, I don't know what the damn
thing does for you, besides give you cancer."
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT (2000) - Col. Hayes "Hodge" Hodges, ex-marine military
lawyer. "You ever have a pissed-off marine on your ass?"
DOUBLE JEOPARDY (1999) - Travis Lehman, gruff and tenacious parole officer.
"There are no second chances here! This is the last chance house!"
VOLCANO (1997) - Mike Roark, crusty emergency services director. "You don't
like my plan? That's good. Give me a another plan, but don't tell me we're
backing out!"
MEN IN BLACK ( 1997) - Agent K, deadpan alien hunter. "People are dumb,
panicky, dangerous animals and you know it."
COBB (1994) - Ty Cobb, loathed baseball legend. "(Babe Ruth) could run OK
for a fat man."
THE CLIENT (1994) - "Reverend" Roy Foltrigg, hard-nosed Southern lawyer. "I
can assure you, you have been an even larger pain in the ass."
THE FUGITIVE (1993) - Sam Gerard, hard-driving U.S. marshal. "Don't ever
argue with the big dog, because the big dog is always right."

Roles up her sleeves
By Lynden Barber
March 10, 2004
SAY what you like about Holly Hunter, her dedication to film promotion is
hard to fault.
Only days after partying into the early hours at various post-Oscars
parties, she's already in Australia talking up her movie Thirteen.
She had a supporting actress nomination for the film, in which she plays the
battling mother of a wild 13-year-old girl - her fourth nod after Broadcast
News, The Firm and The Piano (which won her the 1994 Academy Award for Best
Actress). And if she is disappointed at not waltzing off with another golden
guy this year, it doesn't show.
"I was thrilled. In fact I had a blast that night, stayed up till 4am, going
from one party to another," gabbles the diminutive native of Georgia in the
southern US.
"I think I can actually coast on that awhile," she says. "There's such an
elevation of energy that it's stayed around for a while."
This may help explain why the 45-year-old actor appears so vibed-up despite
the rigours of international travel. There is also the fact that "the
connection that a movie has to the public is very important to me".
"I don't take it for granted," she says of the acclaim the movie has
received in the US, "because it doesn't happen with every movie, not even a
good movie. Sometimes I'll do a movie that I'm very proud of, and for some
reason or another it doesn't catch ... It's a privilege to travel with a
movie that people have a connection to."
The bracingly unsentimental and certainly unglamorous Thirteen is all of a
piece for Hunter, who has never shied away from off-beat, confronting or
contentious movies.
Witness some of her previous roles, including in David Cronenberg's bizarre
Crash (whose depiction of people sexually aroused by car crashes provoked a
ban in London) and two of the wackier movies by Coen brothers, Joel and
Ethan - Raising Arizona and O' Brother, Where Art Thou?.
For Hunter, Thirteen was irresistible. Indeed her interest in the film -
which ignited a debate about sexual precocity in the US late last year -
helped to swing the finance into place when the British-based production
house Working Title came on board.
Taking an executive producer credit, Hunter asked for new drafts to
beef up the characterisation of the adult roles and make the drama more
multifaceted.
Plenty of actors talk about wanting great roles, but what does Hunter
understand by that term?
"Something that I don't know about," she answers without a moment's
hesitation. "Something that is outside the realm of my everyday life. That's
always fun."
Which explains why not being a mother was no barrier to the role.
But, she admits, finding these great roles is "really hard" - even for an
actor as well regarded as she is. "Let's say you've got 5000 great actors -
there's 500 great s," she says.
Then there's her age - she turns 46 this month, which "inevitably" makes
things harder, although, she says, "it's never been easy for me, I've never
been easily categorisable as an actress".
This is, she says, because she moves between leading lady and character
roles.
"But the fact is, it's important to act, it's good to work. So actors often
have to take jobs that are not the ideal job, because it's very good to
work, and also you've got to make a living. So there's all kinds of reasons
to act, and I exploit all of 'em."
For all that, Hunter has enjoyed a career peppered with unusual and
memorable roles. Though attractive, she lacks the glamour-kitten looks of a
Charlize Theron or a Nicole Kidman - something that may have helped her to
be taken seriously as a performer.
Even though Hunter's roles don't always work at the box office, or with
critics, they mark her out as someone prepared to take chances - a serious
actor with a distinctive public profile rather than a movie star.
Witness A Life Less Ordinary, Scottish director Danny Boyle's fable-like
follow-up to Trainspotting. It was widely regarded as a disappointment, yet
memorably odd.
If she has any peers, they are Judy Davis (who also stuck her neck out with
a daring role in a Cronenberg film, the William Burroughs adaptation Naked
Lunch) and Jodie Foster.
Like both of them, Hunter possesses an unmistakable intensity and strength
of character that she carries from film to film.
In Thirteen, the scenes between mother and daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) are
so authentic that you start to believe you are watching a fly-on-the-wall
documentary rather than a piece of ed fiction.
There are no look-at-me acting tricks here.
Hunter's eyes light up - well, as much as her Bible-black pupils ever will -
at the mention of Foster's name.
Hunter had appeared in Foster's second directorial feature, Home For The
Holidays. It was a terrific experience, she recalls.
"Jodie understands that ... you make your movie when you cast it, and she
cast that movie impeccably," she says.
Hunter has worked for several female directors including Jane Campion (The
Piano), Alison Maclean (Jesus' Son) and Thirteen director and co-writer
Catherine Hardwicke.
"I think it's serendipitous. Coincidence? Who knows?" she shrugs.
The women for whom Hunter has worked have had little in common, she points
out: "I don't think it breaks down along gender lines like that. I mean,
I've worked with men really intimately."
James L. Brooks, who gave Hunter her breakthrough role as a TV news producer
in 1987's Broadcast News, is an intimate director, she says, implying he
brings a degree of femininity to his work.
"He loves actors, he loves getting in there with you and experimenting with
stuff ... he likes to play."

The red carpet blossomed with spring colors as stars donned ladylike gowns for
Sunday's Golden Globe Awards.
Outrageous fashions were in short supply as most stars played it safe with
pretty pastels or black in gowns that revealed just enough to be sexy but not
enough to steal the spotlight at the 61st annual awards show in Beverly Hills,
Calif.
Bucking that trend was "Cold Mountain" star Nicole Kidman in a gold sequin
backless dress with a plunging neckline held together with nude fabric.
Kidman's loose curls were held back with a gold headband.
"I need a coat, though," Kidman told Joan Rivers on E! Entertainment
Television. "I sort of like that it's got a sort of slight Salome feel to it."
The other red carpet surprise was Jennifer Lopez (news), who wasn't expected to
appear on the red carpet. Days after her breakup with fiance Ben Affleck
(news), Lopez strolled by fans appearing effortlessly chic in a tangerine
goddess gown with silver straps, her hair pulled up in a loose ponytail.
Goddess gowns also gave a romantic flair to Kim Cattrall of HBO's "Sex and the
City" in vintage Valentino and "Lost in Translation" director Sofia Coppola in
Azzedine Allaia.
Youthful, fresh looks were seen on the red carpet, like the nude-colored corset
gown worn by 19-year-old "Lost in Translation" star Scarlett Johansson, a
fashion enthusiast who sang a song as part of Cynthia Rowley's spring runway
show in September in New York.
Elisha Cuthbert, 21, of Fox's "24" wore a 1950s inspired, ladylike look with a
strapless, pale pink organza cocktail dress by Monique Lhuillier, accessorized
with a small bouquet of roses at the waist.
"It's a little prom queen but I love it," Cuthbert told Melissa Rivers on E! "I
wanted to do simple, I didn't want to do too crazy."
Evan Rachel Wood, 16, of "thirteen" wore a simple metallic gray spaghetti strap
gown, with minimal, radiant makeup and loosely pulled up hair, and "Joan of
Arcadia" star Amber Tamblyn, 20, wore a pale apricot corset gown with
handkerchief train by designer Reem Acra.
Carson Kressley, the fashion guru on Bravo's "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,"
got into the spring spirit, wearing a pink jacket.

Costner playing ballplayer in 'Anger'
By DAVID GERMAIN
Kevin Costner, star of the film "The Upside of Anger," poses at the Sundance
Film Festival. (AP Photo/Kevork Djansezian)
PARK CITY, Utah (AP) - There are three notable differences in Kevin
Costner's latest career move as a big-screen ballplayer:
-The star of the previous baseball flicks Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and
For Love of the Game plays a retired ballplayer in the comic drama The
Upside of Anger, which premiered over the weekend at the Sundance Film
Festival.
-Costner is a supporting performer to the film's central character, played
by Joan Allen.
-The actor known for such sober dramas as Dances With Wolves, JFK and The
Untouchables is playing a good old goofball, a big-hearted meathead with a
dopey laugh, a chronic marijuana buzz and a long-neck beer bottle
perpetually in hand.
When writer-director Mike Binder's for The Upside of Anger came his
way, Costner had a moment's hesitation about doing another ballplayer.
"But listen, I'm not that timid about, 'Ooh, what are people going to
think?"' Costner said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I didn't
think Field of Dreams had anything to do with For Love of the Game. I didn't
think that Love of the Game had anything to do with Bull Durham. And I
didn't do any of them because they were baseball.
"When I saw this, I thought the not-careful journalists will write, 'Oh,
another baseball movie.' But I did this because he was an interesting
character."
Opening theatrically in March, The Upside of Anger stars Allen as a woman
with four daughters (Erika Christensen, Evan Rachel Wood, Keri Russell and
Alicia Witt) who turns boozy and caustically bitter after her husband pulls
a vanishing act.
Costner plays Allen's laid-back neighbour, a former baseball star who
becomes her drinking buddy and eventually tumbles into an uneasy
relationship as her lover and referee for the woman's spats with her
daughters.
Allen said it was refreshing for Costner to cut loose in a jollier role.
"I thought it would be fun to see him play something like that," Allen said.
"We referred to him as a big teddy bear all the time. He was just really
lovable and sweet and kind of goofy among all these women."
Binder, also co-starring as a lecherous pal who produces a radio talk show
hosted by Costner's character, wrote the with Allen in mind. The two
had become chummy on the set of Allen's political drama The Contender, in
which Binder co-starred.
But it was Costner's star power that secured financing for the film.
Costner, an Academy Award winner for best-picture and director on Dances
With Wolves, never tried to muscle in on the production, though, said
Binder, who wrote and starred in the HBO series The Mind of the Married Man.
"He was the driving force behind getting the movie greenlighted, but he
never used that power, which I respected," Binder said. "He was always one
of the ensemble, one of the players. Never pulled rank. He never came to my
editing room, never wanted me to recut anything. He truly was just a player
and a supportive guy."
One of Hollywood's biggest box-office draws in the late 1980s and early '90s
with Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,
Costner has had fitful results with his movies over the last 12 years.
Last summer's Western Open Range, which Costner directed and starred in, and
the golf romance Tin Cup were modest successes. But his acclaimed political
drama Thirteen Days failed to find an audience, and he had flops with such
movies as the supernatural thriller Dragonfly and the heist flick 3000 Miles
to Graceland.
Costner, who turned 50 this month, said studio pressures to boost the films'
commercial prospects undermined some of his big-budgeted movies.
"I think some of the movies haven't lived up to what they should have been,"
Costner said. "When they're not done for a lot of money, sometimes you get a
clearer voice, one single voice, about what the movie's to be about. And
some of the movies for me that have not performed as well as I thought they
could have, I think was because too many voices enter into them."
Costner said he feels no career pressure to deliver another breakout hit,
saying his films have been profitable enough between theatrical and
home-video revenues.
"I know what my movies do economically. I like everybody else understand
what they do on opening weekend," Costner said. "The economic life of my
movies, I'm really comfortable with what happens to them when they go out
there, and so are the studios."
