May 29, 2006 -- THE upcoming "Ameri can Idol Tour" is be ginning to
look like it will be as big a hit as the TV show.
Some 20 new dates were added to the tour late last week, according to
reports.
And some cities are reporting complete sell-outs within a few hours.
The TV show - always popular since it first began four years ago -
turned into a phenomenon this past season. The finale was seen by more
people than traditionally tune in for the Oscars most years.
And now that all 10 finalists - including Taylor Hicks and Katharine
McPhee - are slated to perform, fans seem to be rushing for tickets to
see their favorites in the flesh.
Various music trades are saying that if ticket sales continue at this
pace. the 59-date Idol tour could swamp the summer tour buiness in the
same way it has primetime TV.
The Yahoo Buzz Index, for instance, shows the American Idol Tour as one
of the most searched terms this week.
Madonna's 15-week tour was expected to the hottest ticket of the summer
- but the Idol tour could prove to be real competition for the likes of
Bruce Springsteen; Tim McGraw and Faith Hill and Mariah Carey, all whom
are performing live this summer.
The Idol tour is set to begin July 5 in Manchester, N.H., and end in
late September in Wilkes Barre, Pa.
Four New York shows are slated - two at the Meadowlands arena and two
at Nassau Coliseum - starting July 13.

Oscar unplugged
March 4, 2006
For every triumph and polished performance, there's a dud speech, a fashion
disaster and a star-sized tantrum.
The Academy Awards throw up indelible images year after year. Remember
Bjork's swan dress and Michael Moore's angry blast at a fictional president?
Richard Gere's message for Deng Xiaoping and Nicole Kidman's win by a nose?
There was Whoopi Goldberg appearing in white make-up as the African Queen;
David Letterman's "Uma, Oprah" moment; Elia Kazan's controversial lifetime
achievement award; Peter Jackson with an Oscar in each hand; Roberto
Benigni's manic acceptance speech.
At Hollywood's ultimate spectacle, there are memorable triumphs and dramas
as surely as there are fumbled speeches, fashion disasters and jokes that
fall flat.
While always long and sentimental - even surreal when you recall a dance
tribute to Saving Private Ryan in 1999 - the Oscars remain one of the
world's great shows. Part fashion parade, tribute, comedy act, circus,
speech night, marketing exercise and eulogy, they bestow two dozen awards on
Hollywood's most glamorous and - inevitably - a few bearded, uncomfortable
technicians.
The academy no longer claims there are a billion TV viewers of its annual
event. Since being upstaged by the Grammies claiming 1.6 billion, the
viewing audience has been scaled back to a more realistic "hundreds of
millions".
On Monday (Sunday in the US), the multitudes will be watching to see whether
Brokeback Mountain will win best picture, whether that nice Reese
Witherspoon can claim best actress and how Jon Stewart compares with
legendary host Billy Crystal. It's easy to forget that the Oscars is also a
television show that has stagehands scrambling to shift sets, actors ducking
out the back for a smoke and friction behind the scenes when a winner's
speech runs past the 45-second limit. It's an event aimed at winning
American television ratings and requires months of planning, creative
decisions and rehearsals.
What happens off-screen is the subject of The Big Show: High Times and Dirty
Dealings Backstage at the Academy Awards, by Steve Pond, a journalist who
has an annual commission to study the inner workings of the Oscars for
Premiere magazine.
His observations are revealing. In 1995, viewers saw veteran Martin Landau,
having won best supporting actor for Ed Wood, get annoyed when his
longwinded speech was cut off by the show's orchestra. What we did not see
was awards producer Gil Cates getting increasingly agitated in the control
truck as Landau ran through a long list of names and ignored the warning
"PLEASE WRAP UP" flashing red on the teleprompter.
After two minutes, he was still talking. As Landau drew breath, Cates
angrily yelled "music", then "f--- him!". We also didn't see the Los Angeles
police on Oscars duty, checking nervously on walkie-talkies that Landau had
cleared the stage.
Measures to deal with gatecrashers and overzealous winners, Pond writes,
include blinding spotlights aimed at the stage and even rubber bullets. Had
such tactics been necessary, the sight of a blinded Landau cowering under
fire would have been even more memorable than Bjork's swan dress. Like the
historical awards footage designed to be dropped into the broadcast if there
is a disaster on stage, these extreme measures have not been required. So
far at least.
Over the years, we have seen stars at the Oscars wearing coloured ribbons in
support of various causes. We didn't know that, in 1996 at least, there were
baskets in the green room filled with different ribbons for stars to grab as
they wished - pink for breast cancer awareness, red for AIDS, green for the
environment and rainbow for Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Coalition. Just grab
one, no previous commitment required.
We saw Madonna.html' title='Madonna'>Madonna perform at the ceremony in 1997. But we didn't see the
Material Girl arriving at a rehearsal to find a female camera operator
seriously injured after falling into the orchestra pit. Told her stage time
was delayed, Madonna.html' title='Madonna'>Madonna looked puzzled. "But she's just lying there," she said.
"Can't we do this?"
In 2000, there was a medley of past Oscar-nominated songs performed by Ray
Charles, Isaac Hayes, Dionne Warwick and other notables. At the rehearsal
two days earlier, a disoriented Whitney Houston stumbled, fumbled and even
started to sing the wrong song, causing a frustrated Burt Bacharach to slump
over his piano, head on the keys. Faith Hill joined the line-up overnight
and the producers told everyone involved that, officially, Houston had a
sore throat. Best not mention those nasty drug rumours.
Every year, we admire the stars on the red carpet, glamorously attired and
bantering cheerfully with interviewers. What we did not see in 2001 was crew
members flipping a coin to see who was stuck with escorting three of the
most demanding stars: Barbra Streisand, Jennifer Lopez and Kevin Spacey.
It's confirmation, if it was needed, that the gods in Olympus have the same
flaws as the humans at home on the couch. And that away from their
publicists, they do not always present immaculately.
Pond says the Oscars can be an intimidating environment for stars. "When you
stand in the wings and you watch them just before they go on stage or watch
them walk off with their Oscars, you do get to see the scared kid in every
big movie star.
"I remember being in the green room listening to Winona Ryder talk about how
petrified she was about having to walk across the stage and do an
introduction. Angelica Huston came across and said, 'There's nothing to
worry about, you look great.' She really needed to calm her down.
"I remember Nicole Kidman, when she walked off after winning best actress,
she came into the wings with a stage manager who said, 'That was a really
great speech.' She said, 'Was it? I have no idea what I just said.'
"She's certainly not the only one. If you're backstage or in the wings, you
get to see these people at a point of vulnerability that they rarely show at
any other time."
Access backstage is therefore a rare privilege, especially for a writer with
a note-book. "There have been times when I've been asked to leave the room,
especially instances related to security," Pond says. "And there have been
times when somebody has said to me, 'This has to be off the record' and I've
always honoured that...
"They're comfortable with the fact that while I might be telling stories
they wouldn't necessarily want told, basically I get it right and I put it
in context and don't tell stories to be sensationalistic or gossipy."
While it's hard to say definitively that Philip Seymour Hoffman's
performance in Capote is better than Heath Ledger's in Brokeback Mountain,
competition turns the Oscars into a de facto sporting event each year. Pond
writes that the awards "ruthlessly turn the stars into haves and have-nots",
with far more of the latter than the former.
"When those first boxes appear on screen showing the faces of the nominees
as the envelope is opened, who doesn't want to catch the losers in that
moment of disappointment that proves impossible to hide?"
What about the question lingering over the awards for years: was the wrong
name read out when Marisa Tomei'>Marisa Tomei won best supporting actress for My Cousin
Vinny in 1993, usurping a who's who of favourites? And have there been other
times when an Oscar has gone to the wrong person?
Standing on both sides of the stage, Pond says, are representatives of the
accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers with matching sets of envelopes. This
pair have also spent days memorising the names and quizzing each other.
"They have very clear instructions that if a presenter opens the envelope
and says the wrong name, they are to walk on stage, stop the show and
announce the correct winner," Pond says. "Having talked to these guys, I
have no doubt whatsoever that if anyone other than Marisa Tomei'>Marisa Tomei had actually
been the winner that year, PriceWaterhouse would have stopped the show. They
wouldn't have let her go through with her acceptance speech."
Are the Oscars a true indicator of excellence, especially since the ruthless
campaigning that led to Shakespeare in Love beating Saving Private Ryan for
best picture in 1999, leaving Harrison Ford to express a rare moment of
unhappiness on the Oscars stage when his friend Steven Spielberg lost?
"I think if you ask most voters in the academy, they will tell you they are
voting for the movies they thought were the most accomplished," Pond says.
"Does politics come into it? Of course. Of course friendships come into it.
It's impossible to take any group of 6000 people and ask them to vote and
not have all sorts of other things influence their voting ... as a whole,
the majority are voting for what they consider to be the best achievements."
In the process, though, studios aggressively campaign for votes and academy
members respond to past events. Pond believes Russell Crowe's experiences
reveal how the academy is influenced.
"He's an example of how the Oscars aren't always about the performance that
they're honouring you for. Sometimes they're about the performance they
didn't nominate you for the year before."
Part of the reason Crowe won for Gladiator, Pond believes, was that voters
thought he should have won the year before for The Insider. "The next year
he was nominated for A Beautiful Mind. Maybe he should have won again but he
didn't because he'd won the year before for something he probably didn't
deserve to win for.
"He's not Tom Hanks, he's not Mr Beloved, who can win the award back-to-back
and everybody's happy about it."
And in case you're wondering, The Big Show also reveals the one question
that women regularly ask Oscars staff on the way to the stage. It's not "Is
Brad Pitt here?" or even "Do I deserve all this acclaim and wealth for
acting in a movie?" It is "Are my nipples even?"
( The Big Show: High Times and Dirty Dealings Backstage at the Academy
Awards, by Steve Pond, is distributed by Palgrave Macmillan, $24.)

Motley Crue is one of 65 bands that were reportedly turned down by
organizers to appear at the July 2 Live 8 concert in London's Hyde

newspaper, "We simply don't have room for them." Along with the five
previously announced shows in Philadelphia, London, Berlin, Paris and

expected to be confirmed this past Friday (June 17).
The worldwide event will feature acts like Coldplay, Linkin Park, the
Dave Matthews Band, Bon Jovi, the Cure, Elton John, Keane, the
Killers, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Muse, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, REM,
Snoop Dogg, Sting, U2, Snow Patrol, Brian Wilson, Crosby Stills and

Live 8 is aimed at increasing awareness of poverty and hunger in

Bob Geldof is at it again.
Two decades after he masterminded Live Aid, the largest charity concert
ever mounted, to fight famine in Africa, the 58-year-old
singer-activist has announced an encore.
On Tuesday, Geldof unveiled a Live Aid sequel, dubbed Live 8, that aims
to be bigger than the original and will feature a who's-who of the top
music acts in the world, including Paul McCartney, U2, the Rolling
Stones, Madonna and a reunited Pink Floyd, participating in a series of
mega-concerts.
The free gigs will be staged July 2 in London, Paris, Berlin,
Philadelphia and Rome and simulcast on television and the Internet.
At a news conference, Geldof stated that the goal this time around will
be to raise awareness of poverty in Third World countries, particularly
in African nations, ahead of the annual G8 meeting in Britain attended
by the leaders of the world's most powerful industrial nations, among
them President George W. Bush.
"We don't want people's money. We want them," the Irish popster told a
news conference Tuesday, adding that the July 6-8 G8 summit offered a
"unique opportunity for Britain to do something unparalleled in the
world...to tilt the world a little bit on its axis in favor of the
poor."
Coldplay, R.E.M., Mariah Carey and the Cure are among those performing
with McCartney, Madonna and U2 in London; Dave Matthews Band, Bon Jovi,
Stevie Wonder, Sarah McLachlan, Will Smith, Jay-Z and P. Diddy will
take the stage in Philadelphia; Jamiroquai, Placebo, Andrea Bocelli
and Youssou N'Dour are among the headliners in Paris; Lauryn Hill,
Brian Wilson, A-ha and Crosby, Stills and Nash will lead the Berlin
bill; and Duran Duran, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw will command the stage
in Rome.
Meanwhile, several other A-list acts, including Pink Floyd, the Rolling
Stones, Usher, Snoop Dogg and Destiny's Child, have signed on to
perform, but there's no immediate word on where they'll be playing.
Speculation of a pending Spice Girls reunion was quickly squashed by
Victoria Beckham's publicist--not that the Girl Power group would have
been welcomed. According to an account in London's Daily Mirror, Live 8
organizers rejected the quintet out of concern its inclusion might
undercut the seriousness of the event.
The original Live Aid, held simultaneously in 1985 at London's Wembley
Stadium and Philadelphia's RFK Stadium, featured an all-star lineup led
by McCartney, David Bowie, Queen, Duran Duran, U2, Bob Dylan and Led
Zeppelin.
Geldof says Live 8 should exceed its predecessor in terms of
viewership--it will be beamed worldwide to more than 2 billion people
over various cable and satellite channels. AOL will carry the shows
live on the Internet.
Tickets for the London event, which will take place at Hyde Park, will
be given out via a lottery on June 6. Tickets for the other
venues--Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, Philly's Museum of Art, Rome's
Circus Maximus, and a venue in Paris to be announced--will be
distributed via a similar lottery system.
Live 8 organizers hope the massive turnout will help pressure G8
leaders to take immediate action to forgive Third World debt and
establish programs to eradicate poverty and injustice in developing
countries.
Organizers are also hoping to stage concerts in the three other G8
countries: Canada, Russia and Japan.
Here's a complete rundown of the acts and venues confirmed thus far.

Lennox, Paul McCartney, Muse, Razorlight, REM, Scissor Sisters, Snow

For a musician, he's also a pretty good actor. Most famous musicians who are
plopped into movies to draw viewers (like Mick Jagger, Tom Petty) suck at
acting. Dwight is actually decent at it. Just curious: Anyone know what the
story is with that massive scar on his forehead?

He's happily married to Faith Hill. If I was in his shoes it wouldn't bother
me either. :-)

McGraw Lands Movie Role
Country star Tim McGraw has landed his first ever movie role.
The "She's My Kind of Rain" singer will play a bullying father in "Friday
Night Lights," an adaptation of the HG Bissinger book about a Texas town's
devotion to its high school football team.
In the film, which stars Billy Bob Thornton as the head football coach,
McGraw will play a former football hero and the strict father of a Permian
High School Panthers player.
McGraw's wife Faith Hill recently made her movie debut alongside Nicole
Kidman in the upcoming drama Stepford Wives.

Perfect wife = Stepford wife?
hoedown = country/country music?
Faith Hill/Tim McGraw? Tim doesn't quite fit move hunk hubby though...

Seriously, in truth anymore, how beautiful you are is far more
important than how talented you are. eg, Faith Hill and Shania Twain
would not have not got to the top if they were 300 pounds and frumpy.

Lisa Leuschner was the red headed girl that was not put through to the next
round on wednesdays episode of American Idol. We think she still has what it
takes to make it to the wildcard.
You can hear Lisa Leuschner sing the following songs:
"Let Me Let Go" originally sung by Faith Hill
"Nobody's supposed to be here" originally sung by Debra Cox
"Sweet Thing" originally sung by Chaka Khan or Mary J. Blige

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Not one rock-based track has reached the top two slots
of the Billboard Hot 100 during the past couple of years until this week.
The dearth of retail singles for such songs, coupled with the massive audience
potential of R&B/hip-hop titles, has all but relegated rock, and some pop
titles, to the middle of the top 10.
But Hoobastank defies the recent trend, as "The Reason" jumps 5-2 to become the
highest-charting rock track on the Hot 100 since Linkin Park took "In the End"
to No. 2 in March 2002.
With the surrounding R&B tracks having reached their peak almost simultaneously
at R&B and top 40 stations, "Reason" sneaks ahead with an audience gain of 7.5
million listener impressions.
"The Reason" was one of many tracks that took an audience hit last week because
of Memorial Day weekend specialty programing, which cut into normal station
playlist rotations. It is now at a weekly high of 105.7 million impressions.
BACK BURN
Another track that makes an impressive post-holiday audience rebound is Usher's
"Burn." It turns a decline of 13 million from one week ago into a 17 million
jump on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, good enough to become the Greatest
Gainer/Airplay winner in its fifth week at No. 1.
The bulk of the Hot 100 audience bump (almost 11 million) comes from
R&B/hip-hop outlets, primarily WQHT New York, WGCI Chicago and KKBT Los
Angeles. Combined, they account for an increase of 4.7 million listener
impressions. It is no surprise, then, that "Burn" also earns Greatest Gainer
stripes atop Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks.
SUMMER SALE
Seals & Crofts return to the Adult Contemporary chart for the first time in 24
years with "Summer Breeze," a track they took to No. 4 in 1972.
The song's re-entry at No. 24 was fueled by its inclusion in the latest Gap
commercials, which tout the chain's summer wares. A new mix of "Breeze" was cut
for the ad, and Warner Bros. shipped it to radio. The label will include the
track with some other remixed golden oldies from the likes of Rod Stewart and
the Doobie Brothers on an album due in August.
WLTW New York is one of the many stations that jumped on board, as the station
is playing "Breeze" for the first time in a few years, with the new mix getting
a great reaction, music coordinator Morgan Prue says.
COTTER IN THE ACT
After bowing one week early because of street-date violations, second-season
"Nashville Star" winner Brad Cotter logs the biggest week the Hot Country
Singles Sales chart has seen since last fall. He also collects the fattest sum
by a new artist's debut single since the USA Network show's first-round winner
last summer.
Cotter's "I Meant To" scans 5,000 copies and vaults 9-1, the largest sales mark
since Kid Rock's "Picture" with Allison Moorer reigned with 5,000 copies the
week of Sept. 13, 2003.
Among acts without any prior chart history, Cotter's total is the biggest since
inaugural "Star" winner Buddy Jewell scanned 7,000 and 6,000 copies during a
two-week stint at No. 1 in July 2003 with "Help Pour Out the Rain (Lacey's
Song)."
"I Meant To" rises 45-43 on Hot Country Singes & Tracks and whets "Star"
watchers' appetites for Cotter's "Patient Man" album, slated for July 17.
Elsewhere on the chart, Tim McGraw 's "Live Like You Were Dying" is flat-out
hauling ass, to put it in the most blunt terms. The song rockets into the top
10 in its third chart week, a feat superstars typically accomplish on this
chart with songs that contain profound lyrics.
McGraw's stop-you-in-your-tracks song about mortality is country's quickest top
10 climb since Darryl Worley's contemplative "Have You Forgotten?" took three
weeks to rise to No. 10 the week of March 22, 2003.
McGraw is one of only five artists in the modern era to enter the top 10 that
fast and one of three to have accomplished it twice, along with Garth Brooks
and Alan Jackson. McGraw's "It's Your Love" (with wife Faith Hill) did so in
1997.
