Broccoli Begins Work on 'Casino Royale' Sequel
James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli is so certain Daniel Craig will be a
huge hit playing 007, she has already started working on the sequel to
forthcoming movie Casino Royale. Craig has come under intense scrutiny since
he was announced as Pierce Brosnan's successor last year, with die hard fans
setting up a website encouraging cinema-goers to boycott his debut as Bond.
But Broccoli is convinced Craig is the perfect person to give the
traditionally suave superspy a grittier, rawer edge. And she has shown her
commitment to Craig's appointment by announcing his second role before
Casino Royale has even completed filming. She says, "We are already working
on the sequel. We're in the early stages of that. It will be an original
story but will continue part of what the story is in Casino Royale."

Bond Producer Lashes Out at Press Reports
James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has laughed off reports Daniel Craig
is struggling in his new role as 007, insisting he is the perfect actor to
play the superspy. Broccoli insists rumors of the new Bond knocking out his
teeth and not being able to drive a manual car are ridiculous - but she's
used to the backlash when a new 007 is announced. She says, "His teeth are
fine, his driving is fine, he doesn't have heat rash and he's not afraid of
the water. We're aware of it (negative press), but it doesn't mean anything
to us. There's always a heightened interest in Bond, and every time we
recast the role, there's even more. It's just in keeping with what we've
been experiencing."

Bye-Bye, Bond
G. Allen Johnson
Sunday, January 1, 2006
So this is how Pierce Brosnan says goodbye to James Bond -- by making fun of
him.
"Walking through the lobby, Brosnan in his knickers and cowboy boots and a
beer, a Marlboro Light hanging out of his gob," says Brosnan. "You know
that's going to have a certain shock value and hopefully some laughs."
Brosnan -- who is really quite natty in a sport coat, silk shirt and cool
leather half-boots the morning after "The Matador's" premiere at the Mill
Valley Film Festival -- is referring to a scene in the film, in which he
strolls through a hotel room in boots and underwear and little else.
Brosnan plays a hired assassin in Richard Shepard's film, and while that may
sound like quid pro quo for a former James Bond (and Remington Steele, for
that matter), box-office returns will be looked at closely. The question
that Brosnan and others -- his film company, IrishDreamTime, and
distributor, the Weinstein Co. -- want answered is, now that he's not Bond
anymore, is he still bankable? A big boost came last month when the actor
was nominated for a Golden Globe award for best actor for his role in "The
Matador."
"You feel these shifts in your career," says the actor, 52, who looks his
age because of the gray beard he is growing for "Seraphim Falls," the Civil
War drama he is shooting now. "There's a certain shift happening right now,
and I don't know which direction I'm going to go, but I feel these little
jolts, little opportunities, happening right now."
His concern over the reception of "The Matador" abruptly shifted after the
Mill Valley showing when he received a call that a fire had started at his
Malibu estate, destroying a garage and threatening his house. His wife,
Keely Shaye Smith, insisted on going back to the estate alone to assess the
damage while Brosnan stayed on to promote the film. "I'm sorry if I'm
looking at my phone, but if I get a call from my wife, I'll have to take
it," Brosnan says at a Mill Valley inn. "I've been up since 4 in the
morning. You've got to be on edge somewhat, a situation like that."
The fact is, Brosnan couldn't believe his good luck in getting the of
"The Matador." It was submitted to his production company by writer -- and
eventual director -- Shepard as a writing sample. Shepard, primarily a
television director, was angling to direct the sequel to Brosnan's biggest
non-Bond hit, "The Thomas Crown Affair."
While no director has yet been announced for "The Topkapi Affair," the
"Crown" sequel, Shepard got his produced.
In "The Matador," Brosnan plays Julian Noble, an alcoholic hit man at the
end of his rope who meets Denver businessman Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear) in
Mexico City. Wright unknowingly becomes dragged into one of Noble's jobs and
later has troubled explaining this to his wife (Hope Davis).
Brosnan's Julian is sort of the anti-Bond -- the danger and the women are
there, but the image is sunk in a haze of alcohol and incompetence.
"We got on like a house on fire," Brosnan says of himself and Kinnear,
without a trace of irony concerning his current situation. "Usually, I'm in
bed with the ladies. But we became good friends. It was a joy to go to work
every day and try to make him laugh."
Brosnan's company produced the film, as it did "Crown" and "The Nephew," a
small movie rooted in his Irish heritage.
"This is the corner I've painted myself into," Brosnan says. "That's the way
I look at it. When you get to a certain point in your career, when you've
played the same note, how do you get out? They're not going to give it to
you. They want more of the same. And so you go out and find it -- and it's
'The Matador.' I read that it's a self-parody, but I saw it as a character
piece. ... It might open the gates to more material."
The elephant in the room during this interview is, of course, Bond. James
Bond.
Brosnan was fired from the role in 2004 after four successful films, from
"GoldenEye" in 1995 to "Die Another Day" in 2002. The Brosnan Bonds, which
resurrected a franchise that had languished since 1983's "Octopussy,"
grossed $1.45 billion.
The largely unknown Daniel Craig ("Layer Cake," "Munich") was named to
replace Brosnan in October, and is scheduled to begin filming "Casino
Royale" this month. Why Brosnan was sacked is a matter of contention. Some
say he was demanding too much money; others say producers Michael G. Wilson
and Barbara Broccoli wanted a younger actor to satisfy the new Sony regime,
which acquired the Bond series when it took over MGM/UA.
"There have been preposterous ideas that I was asking for $40 million and
$30 million, which is not true," Brosnan says. "There was certainly a salary
there that was not out of the ballpark, that other men and women have
received for the same (type of film)."
Brosnan leans back a little farther in his chair.
"The phone just (rang) one day and negotiations stopped. To this day, I'm
not sure why," he says. "I was terribly upset. It was a real body blow. I
thought I'd made some good inroads with the character." So "The Matador" is
his first post-Bond film, and also his first film as an American. Brosnan,
an environmentalist and keen political observer, became a U.S. citizen in
2004.
"America embraced me 23 years ago when I got off the plane, and I embraced
it right back. I have an American wife, American children," he says. "It's
very simple, really. I wanted to vote. I wanted a voice. I'm frightened for
the future, for my children. I'm concerned.
"But above all else, I'm hopeful," he adds. "You must keep the faith -- and
keep a sense of humor."

Daniel Craig's mother blows the new James Bond's cover
By Geneviève Roberts
Published: 14 October 2005
Amid speculation and rumours over who will replace Pierce Brosnan as the
world's most enigmatic spy, the biggest film industry secret was broken
yesterday, by Daniel Craig's mother.
"Obviously we are thrilled to bits," Carol Olivia said. "It has come at a
very good time in his career. He has worked extremely hard all his life and
this would be his biggest populist role. I think he could bring something
very interesting to the part. It will be life-changing," she told the
Liverpool Daily Post.
The new 007 has been a favourite of the producer Barbara Broccoli since she
began the search for Pierce Brosnan's replacement earlier this year.
And while both Sony or Craig's agent would not confirm the news, it seems
certain he will starring in the 21st Bond film, Casino Royale, which returns
to the start of the spy's career. The bookmaker William Hill refused to take
any more money on Craig, and filming is expected to start in January.
Clive Owen, Ewan McGregor, Jude Law and Colin Farrell were also named as
possible contenders for the role.
An official announcement confirming Craig will be the new Bond is expected
today. He will be the sixth James Bond but the first blond actor to play the
part, and, in contrast, to the Etonian background described by Ian Fleming
in his novels (though his education was curtailed by an incident with a
female teacher), Craig left secondary school at 16 and left the Wirral for
London.
He joined the National Youth Theatre and then Guildhall Drama College, where
he studied alongside Ralph Fiennes and Ewan McGregor. His film career began
with The Power of One in 1992, and he later gained recognition with the hit
TV series Our Friends in the North in 1996. He rose to prominence in
Hollywood in the 2002 Sam Mendes movie Road to Perdition with Tom Hanks,
Sylvia with Gwyneth Paltrow, and Enduring Love with Rhys Ifans. He also
played opposite Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raiders.
He is said have had a relationship with Kate Moss and, last week, was linked
to Sienna Miller.
Antonia Quirke has described him as "easily the best, if not the only, actor
of his type in the country" in The Independent.
Popcorn Magazine said he was "One of Britain's finest and committed actors"
and Gaby Wood in The Observer said "his film roles show off an extraordinary
range, and an exceptional grasp of rawness and complication."
Casino Royale, an adaptation of Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel, will
be directed by GoldenEye film-maker Martin Campbell. In the book, the spy is
introduced as a more youthful and ruthless character than the films.
Screenwriter Paul Haggis has already said that the new Bond will be
reinvented as a younger character with no gadgets. Brosnan, who appeared in
four Bond films, is now 52.
Craig joins a Bond dynasty of Brosnan, Sir Sean Connery, Sir Roger Moore,
George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton. There was also an unofficial spoof of
Casino Royale featured David Niven as Bond in 1967.
It also seems likely that the life of Fleming will be made into a film after
Warner Bros have agreed to back a by Damian Stevenson. Fleming, a
journalist and a banker, drew his inspiration for the debonair,
vodka-martini-sipping spy from working with Naval Intelligence during the
Second World War.

It's the new James Bond
by NICOLE LAMPERT, Daily Mail
08:14am 11th October 2005
He has just proved his lady-killing credentials by seducing Sienna Miller
from under the nose of his friend, Jude Law.
Now Daniel Craig is about to become the biggest seducer of all - Ian
Fleming's James Bond.
The actor, who found fame as Geordie in the BBC series Our Friends in the
North in 1996, got the job after an 18-month mission to replace Pierce
Brosnan.
Scores of others, including Law himself, Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell and
Orlando Bloom, were considered but rejected.
Shortlist of two
In the end a shortlist of two emerged - Craig and newcomer Henry Cavill. The
pair were auditioned again and tried on tuxedos to see how they would look
in the quintessential Bond clothing.
Craig, 37, whose choice will be confirmed by producers Barbara Broccoli and
Michael G Wilson later this week, will be the sixth Bond, but the first
blond.
He will star in the 21st Bond film, based on Ian Fleming's first book Casino
Royale.
Craig has said he does not like the fact that the films are more about
gadgets than feelings.
He added: "It's a big machine and it makes a lot of money - so why would you
change something that makes a lot of money?"

Pierce Brosnan Puts Himself Back On Bond List
September 25, 2005, 10:49:41
BROSNAN HAS 'UNFINISHED BUSINESS' AS BOND
PIERCE BROSNAN has added his name back on the JAMES BOND shortlist after
claiming he has "unfinished business" with the superspy.
Brosnan insisted he wouldn't be returning as 007 in new film CASINO ROYALE
but now he's having second thoughts.
He tells www.CityBeat.com, "Until someone like DANIEL CRAIG steps in or
until someone like whomever the next man is or until they ask me back the
story is still open. For me it's unfinished business and we might get to
stand there again."
Meanwhile, top 007 gossip website www.CommanderBond.net has broken the news
that bosses at Sony want Brosnan back.
According to the site, a senior Sony executive has told a member of the
Casino Royale production team that Brosnan could indeed be strapping on the
holster again for the forthcoming film.
Meanwhile, ALFIE star SIENNA MILLER has become a front runner in the race to
become the next Bond babe after 007 franchise boss BARBARA BROCCOLI was
spotted in the audience at the actress' recent AS YOU LIKE IT play.
If Miller lands the coveted role, she'll play seductress VESPER LYND in the
new film.
