With Michael J. Fox, it's been Parkinson's disease. With Magic Johnson, it's AIDS. And with the late Christopher Reeve, it was spinal-cord injuries. But with breast cancer, a disease so prevalent many people on the street can rhyme off statistics, the story of rock star Sheryl Crow has a special and tragic irony. The 44-year-old, nine-time Grammy winner -- who announced Friday that she had undergone surgery for breast cancer -- was a cancer activist even before she was diagnosed. Ms. Crow had campaigned for cancer charities since losing friends to the disease, but took up the cause fervently with her former fiancé, star cyclist Lance Armstrong, who is one of the world's most famous cancer survivors. Just this past fall, Ms. Crow led a cadre of celebrities that included George Michael and Geri Halliwell in a Tickled Pink concert in London, England, to raise breast cancer awareness. She often appeared with Mr. Armstrong at cancer benefits that the seven-time Tour de France winner hosted through the Lance Armstrong Foundation and its support resource, LiveStrong. The 34-year-old cycling star created the charity to assist cancer victims after beating testicular cancer that spread to his lungs in the 1990s. Still, after a five-month engagement, the couple shocked showbiz pundits and parted three weeks ago, for reasons that haven't been disclosed. Then, in a statement posted on her website Friday, Ms. Crow announced that she has breast cancer. The report said she is recovering from a "minimally invasive" surgery that was performed last Wednesday in Los Angeles. Ms. Crow is also to undergo radiation treatment as a precaution. "Her doctors think her prognosis is excellent," said Ms. Crow's publicist, Dave Tomberlin. Ms. Crow noted that she felt she benefited from early detection and urged women to have regular checkups. "I encourage all women everywhere to advocate for themselves and for their future -- see your doctor and be proactive about your health," she said. Still, the Missouri-raised singer-songwriter and guitarist has had to postpone her North American tour, which was to have started next month. What, if any, role Ms. Crow's diagnosis played in her breakup with Mr. Armstrong is unknown. It has not been revealed when Ms. Crow was first diagnosed, and in a statement released Friday night, Mr. Armstrong said he was "devastated" to hear of her illness. The two may no longer be together romantically, but cancer has now united the two very familiar faces as symbols of just how common and insidious cancer can be, particularly as it strikes the vibrant in their primes. "Once again I'm reminded of just how pervasive this illness is, as it has now touched someone I love deeply," Mr. Armstrong said in his statement. On her website, Ms. Crow said of her diagnosis: "I am joining the more than 200,000 women [in the United States] who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year." According to the Canadian Cancer Society, 21,600 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and 5,300 women died. One in nine women is expected to develop breast cancer during her lifetime and one in 27 will die of it. Despite perceptions of an increasing frequency of cancer cases, the society notes that since 1993, incidence rates for breast cancer have stabilized and death rates have declined. As Ms. Crow said in the statement on her website: "More than 10 million Americans are living with cancer, and they demonstrate the ever-increasing possibility of living beyond cancer. "I am inspired by the brave women who have faced this battle before me and grateful for the support of family and friends," said Ms. Crow, best known her songs All I Wanna Do, Soak Up The Sun and If It Makes You Happy. Sources close to the Beckhams say that since the revelations, Mrs Beckham, 31, has had trouble sleeping and eating. But the couple have been trying to gloss over their problems with a series of staged photographs.
