Updating Sunset Boulevard? How would THAT work exactly? The original
was made in 1950 about a washed-up silent screen star whose peak was
about 25 years prior. So if they update it, that means Norma was a huge
star in 1980. But that was hardly a golden era in film entertainment.

Let's step back a little here. You're Webber and you want to turn another
one of your musicals into a movie. The last two disappeared from screens
before you could say "Madonna" or "Phantom."
You have one of the biggest stars in the show business universe interested
in doing your next movie. Her name is Barbra Streisand'>Barbra Streisand and she can sing
and she can act! She hasn't been on Broadway in a musical in years
(decades?) and has a rabid following, not to say curiosity value, that
defies imagination. The lone act of casting Streisand in Sunset Boulevard
would have guaranteed international PR and box office.
But you choose Glenn Close'>Glenn Close?!!
The only reason I can think of for making such a monumental blunder is
that Webber wants tight control of the film and the actors in it.
Streisand would have eclipsed him.

The character is supposed to be a faded beauty, that's why Gloria
Swanson was so right for the original. It would be easier to believe

Glenn Close to make Sunset movie
Close will play Norma Desmond, a former queen of the silent screen
Actress Glenn Close is to reprise her role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's stage
musical Sunset Boulevard on film, his production company has confirmed.
The 58-year-old, who won a Tony award for playing silent movie star Norma
Desmond on Broadway, is said to have beaten Barbra Streisand to the role.
According to Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group, Ewan McGregor and Hugh
Jackman are potential co-stars.
The movie will cost a reported £33m and be released in time for Christmas
2006.
Based on the 1950 film starring Gloria Swanson and William Holden, Sunset
Boulevard had its world premiere in London in July 1993 with Patti LuPone in
the Norma Desmond role.
Reluctant
Close took on the part when the show opened in Los Angeles in December 1993.
According to the film's co-producer Austin Shaw, Close was initially
reluctant to reprise her performance.
However, he said she changed her mind after meeting Lord Lloyd-Webber at the
Golden Globes in January.
Sunset Boulevard will be the fourth big-screen version of a Lloyd Webber
musical after Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita and The Phantom of the Opera.
His most recent musical, The Woman in White, is currently running at
London's Palace Theatre.
Close last appeared in 2004's remake of The Stepford Wives and has a
recurring role in the next series of TV cop drama The Shield.

I'm surprised to hear she quit. But then again I heard her say in a
recent interview that she missed her family back East. She was
commuting from NYC to LA so I can see why that would put a damper on
things.

Close quits The Shield
26/05/2005 - 14:57:53
Glenn Close has handed over her badge after just one season of cult TV cop
show The Shield.
The Fatal Attraction star, who plays tough police captain Monica Rawling on
the show, has opted not to sign up for the fourth season of the gritty
drama.
Series creator Shawn Ryan says: "There's no disappointment in this at all.
I'd love to have her stick around, but getting her for the time that we did
(proved to be) a tremendous success."
According to ratings figures, Close has lured 30% more viewers to the show,
which stars Michael Chiklis as a rogue cop.

- Celebrity Gossip
- She earned an Academy Award nomination in her first feature-film role, as Robin Williams' freespirited, nonconformist mother in The World According to Garp (1982), then shocked moviegoers who knew her only in this middle-aged role by playing a contemporary yuppie in The Big Chill (1983, getting another nomination). She has since snagged three additional Oscar nods while establishing herself as one of the screen's most talented and interesting female stars. The striking, aristocratic blond actress played on the New York stage for several years, and even did a few TV movies (including 1979's Too Far to Go and Orphan Train), before being chosen for Garp by director George Roy Hill while appearing on Broadway in "Barnum."
Close has displayed admirable versatility in her film assignments, bringing distinction to thoughtful projects, such as 1988's Dangerous Liaisons in which she played a manipulative sexual opportunist, and 1990's Reversal of Fortune which cast her as real-life comatose heiress Sunny Von Bulow, and lending a touch of class to more dubious fare, such as 1985's Jagged Edge the prototype for a whole slew of "erotic thrillers," and 1987's Fatal Attraction the controversially smarmy melodrama that cast her as the psychotic mistress of Michael Douglas. She hasn't had much success with comedy, however, as Maxie (1985), her lone comedy vehicle, will attest (though the fault wasn't hers).
Close served as executive producer (and starred in) the well-received TV movie Sarah, Plain and Tall (1991) and its sequel Skylark (1992). She returned to Broadway in "Death and the Maiden" in 1992 and won her second Tony Award for her performance (her first was for "The Real Thing"); then in 1993 she agreed to tackle the demanding role of Norma Desmond in the musical version of Sunset Blvd. She won a Tony in 1995 for her performance.
OTHER FILMS INCLUDE: 1984: The Stone Boy, Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (providing uncredited dubbing for female lead Andie MacDowell), The Natural, Something About Amelia (a TV movie that earned her an Emmy nomination); 1988: Light Years (voice only); 1989: Immediate Family 1990: Hamlet (as Gertrude); 1991: Meeting Venus, Hook (in an unbilled cameo); 1993: The House of the Spirits 1994: The Paper 1995: Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story (TV movie), Mary Reilly
