Where's your sense of humor, Steven?
"War of the Worlds" director Steven Spielberg is still mad about a joke
comedian Kathy Griffin made at last year's Golden Globes and is demanding an
apology. During the telecast, Griffin made a joke that 10-year-old "War of
the Worlds" star Dakota Fanning was in rehab. "I think it was made very
obvious that people were very upset and they were looking for some sort of
an apology," a Spielberg spokesman told PageSix.com. But in typical Griffin
style, the comic says Spielberg should worry less about a year-old joke and
more about the other "War of the Worlds" star, Tom Cruise. "With Tom Cruise
losing his [mind] on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' and the 'Today' show and
everything else, they're all worried about my Fanning joke, right?" Griffin
said.

Best flicks for 2006
By LOUIS B. HOBSON -- Calgary Sun
A look at movies in '06
Enough already with the griping. It's official. Movie attendance in 2005 was
the worst in almost a decade.
Some film analysts blame the slump on the DVD industry.
A poll conducted by Ipso for The Associated Press and AOL News in July
revealed 73% of adults say they prefer watching movies at home on DVD,
videotape or pay-per-view.
Even more disheartening for the studios is the finding that 47% surveyed in
the poll feel movies are getting worse and therefore do not warrant
viewing -- especially at today's ticket prices.
Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations, sides with disgruntled
viewers.
"The 2005 slump in movie attendance is product-driven which, to me, is a
much less chilling problem than some sort of cultural shift in people's
moviegoing habits. People will make the effort to see a good film."
George Lucas, who produced and directed this year's top box-office movie
Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith, agrees wholeheartedly with
Dergarabedian.
Lucas insists "going to the movies is a social event, like going to a
football game, like going to the ballet, like going to a play.
"Attending movies is something you do to be social with other people. I
don't think that's ever going to go away."
In order to drag people away from their TVs, filmmakers are obliged to
improve both the quality and the accessibility of their films.
With this in mind, here's a glimpse of 20 of the more than 500 films slated
for release in 2006. The most that can be said for any of them at this point
is, on paper, they're among the most interesting of the offerings. Some
release dates are tentative:
TRISTAN & ISOLDE (Fox/Jan. 13):
Before Romeo and Juliet, there were the tragic star-crossed lovers Tristan
and Isolde. Tristan (James Franco) was a young knight who fell in love with
the married future queen of England (Sophia Myles.) It promises to be a big,
lush, romantic drama.
THE PINK PANTHER (Sony/Feb. 10):
Steve Martin steps into the giant-sized shoes of Peter Sellers to play
bumbling French detective Inspector Jacques Clouseau. It's being billed as a
prequel to Seller's 1964 classic, with Clouseau having to solve the
mysterious death of a soccer coach and discover who stole the famous Pink
Panther diamond. The entertainment world will be watching to see if Martin
can pull this one off.
EIGHT BELOW (Disney/Feb. 17):
No one does fact-based animal stories better than Disney and here comes one
about eight husky sled dogs marooned during an Antarctic winter. This one
looks enough like the Disney classic The Incredible Journey to make it a
hit.
BASIC INSTINCT 2: RISK ADDICTION (Sony/March 31):
Sharon Stone's ice pick wielding seductress is back and this time it's David
Morrissey's psychiatrist who gets lured into her dangerous sex games. Call
it pure guilty pleasure, but the thought of Stone back to her old tricks is
likely enough of a hook to get people into multiplexes.
ICE AGE 2: THE MELTDOWN (Fox/March 31):
Scrat and his acorn are back to wreak more havoc. In tow are Manfred the
laconic Wooly Mammoth, Sid the motor-mouthed sloth and the villainous Diego,
the Sabre-toothed tiger. If this one is half as delightful as it
predecessor, it deserves to be a hit.
mission IMPOSSIBLE III
(Paramount/May 5):
Fresh from saving the world from Martians in last year's War of the Worlds,
Tom Cruise prepares to tackle international terrorists as rogue agent Ethan
Hunt. The release is timed to coincide with the birth of Cruise's first
biological child, so he should grab every magazine cover in the world for
this one.
THE DA VINCI CODE (Sony/May 19):
Many readers confused Dan Brown's fiction bestseller for fact, something Ron
Howard insists he won't do in the film. Tom Hanks stumbles upon a secret
sect whose belief Christ fathered children could shake the foundations of
Christianity. Controversy plus eager fans should make this one a hot ticket.
X-MEN 3 (Fox/May 26):
The mutants are back, but this time around there is a possible cure to treat
them. Brett Ratner is directing instead of Bryan Singer, but the good news
is Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Rebecca Romijn, Patrick Stewart and Ian
McKellen are all back, joined by Kelsey Grammer and Shohreh Aghdashloo. We
can only hope lightning strikes three times, let alone twice.
THE BREAK UP (Universal/June 2):
With Wedding Crashers, Vince Vaughn had one of the biggest grossing films of
2005, so expectations run high for this romantic comedy. It also helps that
Vaughn and costar Jennifer Aniston started an off-screen relationship while
filming this one in Chicago. We'll all be watching to see if they can create
as many sparks as Aniston's ex, Brad Pitt, did with Angelina Jolie in Mr. &
Mrs. Smith.
THE OMEN 666 (Fox/June 6):
This is a remake of the 1976 horror classic that spawned three sequels. Liev
Schreiber and Julia Styles play the American couple who discover the child
they adopted might just be the devil's spawn. In a brilliant piece of stunt
casting, Mia Farrow, who played the mother of Satan's child in Rosemary's
Baby, plays the nanny who knows the child's real origins.
CARS (Disney/June 9):
The creative geniuses at Pixar who turned talking toys, retired superheroes
and monsters into box-office superstars, are at it again. This time they
invest cars and all their cousins with humanity as well as voices.
SUPERMAN RETURNS (Warners/June 30):
The Man of Steel, now played by newcomer Brandon Routh, has been hanging out
on the planet Krypton. When his arch enemy Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) starts
causing havoc, Superman returns to Earth to battle evil and court the lovely
Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth). Warners is hoping this is the beginning of a new
Superman franchise.
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD'S MAN'S CHEST
(Disney/July 7):
Those nasty sea phantoms insist Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) owes them his
soul, so Jack has to find a way to win it back or spend eternity haunting
the seas. Back in 2003, the original Pirates of the Caribbean filled
Disney's treasure troves with $654 million, turned Depp into a box-office
superstar and won him an Oscar nomination.
LADY IN THE WATER (Warners/July 21):
M. Night Shyamalan scored with thrillers like The Sixth Sense and Signs, but
found audiences and critics slipping away with The Village. His newest
supernatural thriller has humans teaming up with a water nymph to save all
their lives and souls from demons intent on destruction.
MIAMI VICE (Universal/July 28):
Last year's crop of big-screen versions of vintage TV shows were major
critical and box-office disappointments, but this one is actually promising.
Michael Mann, who created the original TV series, wrote and directed this
film with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as renegade vice detectives Crockett
and Tubbs. Mann has set the story in modern-day Miami.
MARIE ANTOINETTE (Sony/Oct. 13):
Sofia Coppola wrote and directed this costume drama that stars Kirsten Dunst
as the Austrian princess who became Queen of France when she was just a
teenager. Jason Schwartzman plays her indifferent husband, Louis XVI, with
Rip Torn, Judy Davis and Marianne Faithful filling out the supporting cast.
Coppola scored a major triumph with Lost in Translation.
FLUSHED AWAY (Paramount/Nov. 3):
The folks at Aardman Animations, who brought us 2000's Chicken Run and last
year's Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit, bring us this tale
of a society rat (Hugh Jackman) who gets flushed down the toilet of his
upscale apartment and falls in love with an adventurous beauty (Kate
Winslet). It looks like a cross between Romeo & Juliet and Pirates of The
Caribbean.
CASINO ROYALE (Sony/Nov. 17):
Daniel Craig takes over as James Bond, with Martin Campbell directing. Bond
matches wits and gadgets with Monsieur Le Chiffre, a French gangster who
uses the profits from his casino to fund terrorists. Considering the film
hasn't been fully cast and cameras have yet to start rolling, this one could
find itself bumped to 2007.
CHARLOTTE'S WEB (Paramount/Dec. 20):
This children's classic about a spider who saves the life of a pig will
combine live action with animation. Dakota Fanning plays Fern, who helps
Charlotte the spider (voice from Julia Roberts) spin a tale of friendship
and sacrifice. Though it's no Harry Potter or Chronicles of Narnia,
Charlotte's Web has a huge fan base among youngsters and their parents.
DREAMGIRLS (Paramount/Dec. 22):
The box-office and critical success of Chicago and Moulin Rouge has
producers eying Broadway for more stage musicals to turn into movies. This
one, loosely based on the career of The Supremes, will star Beyonce Knowles,
Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Mos Def and Danny Glover.
Considering the poor response for Phantom of the Opera, Rent and The
Producers, this one could be a hard sell even with such a stellar cast.
THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES
(Warners/Fall):
Warners has yet to announce a release date for this western filmed in
Alberta last summer, but it is likely to be a fall release, setting it up
for the kind of attention Brokeback Mountain has been receiving. This one
stars Brad Pitt as the famous outlaw and Casey Affleck as the friend who
turned assassin and killed him.

Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2005
An hour-long special highlighting some of the year's most prominent
names in entertainment, politics and sports, will air Tuesday, November
29 at 10:00pm ET.
Hosted by Barbara Walters, the special will include brand new
interviews with superstar Tom Cruise, Grammy Award winner Kanye West,
pint-sized acting dynamo Dakota Fanning, legal eagle Thomas Mesereau,
seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong'>Lance Armstrong (who is also joined by
his rock star fianc=E9e, Sheryl Crow) and Beth Holloway Twitty (mother
of missing teenager Natalee Holloway). The special also includes
"Desperate Housewives'" Teri Hatcher, Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx
and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The Number One Most
Fascinating Person of 2005 will be announced on the program.
"We've tried to choose people of high achievement for whom this past
year has been special indeed," says Ms. Walters.
This year megastar Tom Cruise, once known for his guarded privacy,
revealed a side to himself that no one had seen before. He was jumping
on couches while professing his love for Katie Holmes. He also shared
his opinions about preion drugs and psychiatry. Barbara Walters
interviews Cruise on the set of his next film, "Mission Impossible 3,"
and asks the questions everyone wants answered. The public may have
seen his behavior as odd, but Cruise insists, "I think all men should
celebrate their women...I will forever be jumping on couches."
Grammy Award winner Kanye West had a meteoric rise to stardom. After
winning multiple Grammys and gracing the cover of Time Magazine, his
politically charged rap music took on a new dimension when West spoke
publicly about his disapproval of President Bush during a telethon for
the victims of Hurricane Katrina and said, "George Bush doesn't care
about black people." West, however, does not apologize and tells Ms.
Walters, "I wonder why those words are considered to be harsh."
This year the biggest movie star in Hollywood was also the smallest.
Eleven-year-old Dakota Fanning sees herself as a normal kid with lots
of friends. She has worked with the biggest leading men in Hollywood,
including Tom Cruise, Sean Penn, Denzel Washington and Kurt Russell.
Dakota, even at this young age, chooses her own roles and says, "I have
to have a feel for the character... if it's not the right thing or it's
similar to something I've done before, that would be why I would not do
something."
Prosecutor Thomas Mesereau never doubted that Michael Jackson was
innocent of the child molestation charges. He says that the trial was a
disgrace but took solace that the justice system prevailed. Asked about
his distinctive looks and long hair, Mesereau says, "I have never been
totally comfortable with a lot of members of my profession who seem to
want to conform to one another, wear the same clothes, the same ties,
present the same look."
At 34, Lance Armstrong'>Lance Armstrong has defied the odds. He won the coveted Tour de
France bicycle race seven times, survived cancer, raised millions of
dollars through his foundation, asked rock star Sheryl Crow to marry
him and announced his retirement from competitive racing while at the
top of his game.
Armstrong shares his innermost feelings about being faced with death
and tells Ms. Walters, "I was given my life back. I wasn't going to
throw it away. I was going to do everything I could to be the best
athlete, the best person... If it was on the bike, if it was off the
bike, making a difference in the lives of people."
Beth Holloway Twitty experienced every parent's worst nightmare: The
mysterious disappearance of her 18-year-old, daughter, Natalee. Beth
Holloway Twitty sits down with Ms. Walters to share the personal agony
and shows the viewers her daughter's bedroom, which has never been seen
before. She's been relentless in her search for answers and at times
took matters into her own hands by following leads when the authorities
were dragging their feet. She tells Ms. Walters, "I am never going to
give up... I will carry her story for the rest of my life."
"Desperate Housewives" sexy star Teri Hatcher was once a self described
has-been. After several years of forgettable parts, she landed the best
job on television playing single mom Susan on the megahit "Desperate
Housewives." It's a role that parallels her life, and Hatcher jokingly
tells Ms. Walters, "I'm just not that good of an actress. I just
finally found a role that actually is me."
This certainly was the year for Jamie Foxx -- an Oscar nomination for
"Collateral" and Best Actor win for his brilliant portrayal of music
legend Ray Charles. He continues to fascinate us this year with new
movies and the debut of his hip-hop CD, "Unpredictable," to be released
by Clive Davis' J Records this December. He tells Ms. Walters, "It's
been a fantastic year. Absolutely everything you could possibly
imagine. It's the NBA Championship. It's the Super Bowl. It's the
Stanley Cup. It's everything all at once."
This year Condoleezza Rice became the first African American female
Secretary of State and quite possibly the most powerful woman in the
world. Barbara Walters profiles Rice's rise to power and includes her
thoughts on running for President in 2008.
The No. 1 Most Fascinating Person of 2005 will be announced on the
program.

Tom Cruise Reveals Baby and Wedding Details to Barbara Walters
---------------------------------------------------------------------------=
-----
This year, actor Tom Cruise has shown he is not shy about revealing
personal details to the world-at-large. Next week on "Barbara Walters
Presents The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2005," Cruise talks to Babs
about when he and Katie will wed and how he plans to keep tabs on his
baby until it's born.
Though many have speculated that Cruise and fiance Katie Holmes would
wed prior to their baby's birth, the actor says the couple have decided
to wait until after the child is born.
"We are going to get married next summer or early fall," Cruise told
the newscaster. "We don't have a date set yet."
Cruise also talks to Walters about his plans to keep an eye on his baby
until it's born.
"I bought a sonogram machine," he explains. "I am going to donate it to
a hospital when we are done."
The machines, which cost upwards of $150,000, use ultrasound waves to
monitor a baby's development in the mother's womb. He says he has been
taught to use the machine and has already used it to view the tiny
fetus.
When asked if he knew the baby's gender, Cruise replies that he doesn't
know yet, but even if he did, he wouldn't reveal it.
Next up for the lovebirds is a trip to Shanghai, China, where Cruise is
filming scenes for Mission: Impossible 3.
"Barbara Walters Presents The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2005" airs
November 29 on ABC. People Magazine will also be printing excerpts from
the interview in this week's issue, onstands Friday.

Kristofferson keeps close eye on Cash film
By JOHN GEROME
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - When the new Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line opens
in theatres Friday, Kris Kristofferson will probably be watching more
closely than most.
As a close friend and collaborator of Cash's, Kristofferson will have a rare
perspective on the film, which stars Joaquin Phoenix'>Joaquin Phoenix as Cash and Reese
Witherspoon as his wife, June Carter Cash.
Besides writing songs recorded by Cash, Kristofferson teamed with Cash,
Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings for three albums between 1985 and 1995 as
the supergroup the Highwaymen.
The third of those, The Road Goes on Forever, has been reissued with six
previously unreleased tracks. A behind-the-scenes documentary filmed in the
studio by producer Don Was'>Don Was will be available Tuesday.
Kristofferson, 69, who stars with Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning in the new
movie Dreamer, spoke with the AP recently from his home in Hawaii.
AP: Are you glad to see Walk the Line coming out?
Kristofferson: It looks promising. I'm glad Joaquin Phoenix'>Joaquin Phoenix did it because
he's a good actor. He has that dark quality that, at that time in John's
life, was pretty prominent.
AP: You have an unusual perspective being an actor as well as Johnny Cash's
friend. Will you be watching the movie with a critical eye?
Kristofferson: Mostly, I'll be looking at it as a guy who worshipped John. I
remember the film on Jerry Lee Lewis that I hated because he's such a unique
artist and that side of him ... I thought the whole thing didn't have
respect for him as an artist. And he's one of the great American voices of
all time. John is as well, so it's got to be hard.
AP: The new reissue, The Road Goes on Forever, was the least commercially
successful of the Highwaymen's three albums. How do you feel about it
artistically?
Kristofferson: I really like it. It seems like we had a real feeling for a
lot of the songs. My favourite on the whole thing was probably Waylon's I Do
Believe. I thought it holds up pretty well.
AP: Do you think there will ever be another Highwaymen album, without Johnny
Cash and Waylon Jennings?
Kristofferson: There was talk about it this year. I think they were going to
do it with George Jones and Hank Jr. There are a number of guys that could
fit in: Merle Haggard - he should have been one. It could easily happen
because Willie will be playing forever, and I'm working again now. But it
won't be the same.
AP: What was it like working with that original lineup?
Kristofferson: I think I was different from the other guys in that I came in
it as a fan of all of them. I had a respect for them when I was still in the
Army. When I went to Nashville they were like major heroes of mine because
they were people who took the music seriously. To be not only recorded by
them but to be friends with them and to work side by side was just a little
unreal. It was like seeing your face on Mount Rushmore.
AP: Are there more unreleased tracks out there?
Kristofferson: I didn't know there were any. I don't even remember doing
Closer to the Bone (his acoustic demo on the reissue). I wouldn't be
surprised if Don Was'>Don Was has some more.
AP: You've been performing a lot of solo shows lately, just you and your
guitar. What's that been like?
Kristofferson: I never had the nerve to do it before. I did it this last
couple of years because I was making a film in Scotland and got an offer to
play some gigs in Dublin. Rather than mobilize everybody, I figured I'd just
do it myself. It puts a focus on the songs that's different from playing
with a band. So far it's working.
AP: Do you consider your work with the Highwaymen some of the most rewarding
of your career?
Kristofferson: When I look back now - I know I hear Willie say it was the
best time of his life. For me, I wish I was more aware how short of a time
it would be. It was several years, but it was still like the blink of an
eye. I wish I would have cherished each moment.

Halloween brought the horror out to movie theaters this weekend, and Saw II,
pretty much by itself, brought the box office back to life. We had three
wide release openers, the aforementioned Saw II from Lions Gate, Sony's
expensive The Legend of Zorro, Prime with Uma Thurman'>Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep, and
The Weather Man starring a sad looking Nic Cage. Without Saw II, we would be
having another one of the slow weekends full of disappointments to which
we've become so accustomed. It's amazing what a $30.5 million opener will
do.
What do you do when your first film, shot for a little over $1 million
dollars, rakes in over $100 million worldwide at the box office? Make
another, quick. That's what novice filmmakers James Wan and Leigh Whannell
along with Lions Gate did with the now franchise Saw films. Despite opening
against the second weekend of The Grudge last year, the original Saw grossed
$18.3 million from 2,315 venues over the same weekend. Saw finished with
$55.2 million in the domestic kitty, and was considered a breakout success,
considering the tiny budget and the film virginity of the director and one
of its stars. This Halloween we get Saw II, with a budget tripled to a
still-tiny $4 million, starring no one, and featuring another new director.
Could Lions Gate repeat their success, and if so, how much higher could the
sequel open?
Saw II is the number one film by a landslide, and is one of the very few big
surprises at the box office for 2005. Saw II grossed an out-of-this-world
$30.5 million from 2,949 venues. That equals a venue average of $10,342.
Tracking estimates had Saw II finishing the weekend with about $22 million,
so to say it was off badly is an understatement (BOP's Reagen Sulewski was
much closer with a $27 million estimate). As expected, the internal weekend
multiplier for Saw II was a sequelish 2.5; however, with Halloween on
Monday, Saw II should have another good night on Monday, making Saw II's
opening even better. Saw II had the same mixed-to-bad reviews that the
original had, with Saw II coming in at 38% fresh compared to the original's
rating of 45% (if you though reviews were going to be good I have some
oceanfront property for you in Idaho). After the success of the original,
there was no doubt that there is a large audience for grisly horror, as the
Saw franchise promotes a similarity to '70s icon The Texas Chainsaw
Massacre. Saw II was made for an absolutely tiny $4 million, and to make
almost eight times the budget over opening weekend provokes comparisons to
films like The Blair Witch Project. Think of it this way: for both films,
Twisted Pictures and Lions Gate Entertainment have now paid about $5.2
million in production costs and have recouped $130 million worldwide, with a
lot more to come from the sequel (and its sequels). A solid franchise has
been born this weekend, so you can expect to see another Jigsaw flick next
year.
For Lions Gate, Saw II is just another entry into what's been a simply
fantastic year for the studio. It all started with Diary of A Mad Black
Woman, which opened to over $20 million before earning $50 million at the
domestic box office against a budget of about $6 million. Then the studio
had Crash, a $7 million production which earned $55 million domestically and
another $20 million overseas. They've also had The Devil's Rejects which
earned $16.9 million versus a $7 million budget, and Waiting with a budget
of $1 million and a gross so far of about $15.5 million. Now they have Saw
II, which will easily be their biggest of the year. Unless something bizarre
happens come Christmas, Lions Gate is a shoe-in for studio of the year.
In a depressing box office year, the good news never lasts long, and we're
back to disappointing results with The Legend of Zorro. Maybe the king of
unnecessary sequels, audiences caught on to this one before opening weekend
and the result is an opening well off what tracking was indicating. The
Zorro sequel grossed a less-than-expected $16.5 million this weekend from an
ultra-wide 3,520 locations, giving it a venue average of $4,687. The
original Banderas/Zorro flick was a summer film back in 1998, with a budget
of $95 million. It earned $22.5 million (in 1998 dollars) over its opening
weekend, and tracking was looking for a similar figure. With the original,
Columbia Pictures had a good film that was destined to have legs, with the
sequel, they have the opposite. Reviews for The Legend of Zorro were brutal,
with only 23 positive reviews out of a possible 91, leading to a quite
rotten score of 25%. This one cost $80 million to make and will have to work
hard to earn back half of that domestically. Internationally, this one still
has a chance, as the first one made $95 million in the domestic market and
came out with an international total of $250 million.
Third goes to our first wide release that got massacred this weekend, Prime,
starring Uma Thurman'>Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep. Universal failed to give this one the
marketing push or the venues to put it into a winning position. With only
1,829 locations, Prime grossed $6.4 million, giving it a venue average of
$3,500. What this film needed, it didn't have, and that is reviews. At
RottenTomatoes, only 35 reviews out of a possible 74 were positive, giving
it a fresh rating of 47%. That's not going to cut it with a movie like
Prime, and we will see this one in the $9.99 bin at Wal-Mart before
Christmas 2006.
Fourth this weekend goes to Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story, the horse
movie starring Dakota Fanning and Kurt Russell. After opening with an okay
$9.2 million last weekend, DreamWorks tried to cash in on kid word-of-mouth
and added almost 500 venues, bringing the total up to 2,491. The move worked
fairly well, as Dreamer grossed $6.3 million in its sophomore frame, down a
not-bad 31%. Made for about $30 million, Dreamer should finish with about
$40 million, or more if word-of-mouth kicks it up a bit.
Fifth goes to Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit, who hang on
to a top five spot after four weeks of release. The cheese fanatic and his
dog dropped a larger than expected 49% this weekend, pulling in a gross of
$4.4 million. As good a film as this one is, its somewhat surprising to see
the bottom fall out so quickly; however, we saw a similar thing with Tim
Burton's The Corpse Bride, so maybe parents are perceiving these films as
too scary. Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit has now earned
$49.8 million versus a budget of about $30 million.
Way back in sixth this weekend is The Weather Man from Paramount, which has
a huge star and huge director, but very few venues. Surprisingly, this Nic
Cage (The Rock, National Treasure) and Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the
Caribbean) movie received only 1,510 venues for its debut, and it's paying
for it with a debut in sixth. The Weather Man grossed $4.2 million, and
didn't even do all that well in terms of screen average, as it finished with
an average of $2,798, good for fourth best in the top ten. It didn't help
that one of the first reviews for The Weather Man called it "one of the
biggest downers to emerge...in recent history". Things got a bit better
review-wise, but it couldn't recover. The RottenTomatoes rating ended up at
55% fresh, which is mixed at best. Stranger things have happened; The
Weather Man could find an audience... the possibility of that happening next
weekend? Almost zero percent.
After finishing in top spot over the last frame, Doom got hammered this
weekend falling a spectacular 74%, a dive usually reserved for really bad
horror sequels. Doom grossed a very poor $4.1 million this weekend, and
should be out of the top ten after this weekend. The $80 million film has
now earned $22.9 million, and may struggle to reach $35 million.
Eighth goes to North Country, as WB failed to add any screens in its second
weekend. The Charlize Theron starrer grossed $3.7 million, off a large 43%
from last weekend. The $35 million film now has a total gross of $12.2
million.
Ninth goes to The Fog, as the John Carpenter remake got hammered in the face
of Saw II. The Fog grossed $3.3 million this weekend, down 51% from last
weekend. Made for only $20 million, The Fog now has a cume of $25.5 million.
Flightplan finishes in tenth this weekend with a gross of $2.6 million. The
Jodie Foster thriller has now earned $81.2 million.
Overall this weekend, despite the impressive performance of Saw II, the top
ten box office still lagged behind last year's totals. The top ten this
weekend earned about $82 million, close, but not close enough to last year's
total of about $89 million.

Fanning tops A list for child stars
By DAVID GERMAIN
TORONTO (AP) - If there's a Hollywood A-list that casting directors consult
when they need a young girl in a lead role, Dakota Fanning certainly is at
the top.
The 11-year-old star has become such a hot talent, she even manages to cross
over to the A-list for young boy roles. Fanning's part in the horse-racing
family flick Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story had been written for a boy.
Then writer-director John Gatins caught Fanning in Man on Fire and rethought
the gender of young Cale Crane, who teams with her dad (Kurt Russell) to
nurse an injured thoroughbred back to champion status.
"I was so impressed with her as I have been in the past and thought, she's
the perfect age at this point, and what an opportunity it would be for this
movie to take on a whole other level of complexity given what she does as an
actor," Gatins said of Fanning.
"I think I even sent Dakota the that had the word 'boy' in it" to
describe Cale, Gatins said. "I told her, 'I just wanted you to read the
and see if you might be interested.' It's rare air with Dakota, and I
think everyone kind of realizes that."
Chatting with Fanning, though, there's no rare air. She's a giggly, smiley,
fidgety sprite who's as sweetly adorable in person as she is on screen.
Given the precociousness she captures on film, you expect a little adult
spouting about how the character resonated with an emotional truth that
leapt off the page and demanded that she take the role.
In truth, Fanning just wanted a pony.
"I had never been around horses at all. That's why I wanted to do it,"
Fanning said in an interview at September's Toronto International Film
Festival, where Dreamer premiered.
Spending half her life as a professional actress, Fanning has been around
some of the biggest names in the business, a roster of collaborators that
would be the envy of actresses five times her age.
After a start in commercials and TV guest spots, Fanning shot to fame as the
daughter of a mentally handicapped man (Sean Penn) in 2001's I Am Sam,
becoming the youngest nominee ever, at age seven, for the Screen Actors
Guild awards.
A short list of her leading men since then includes Tom Cruise in Steven
Spielberg's War of the Worlds, Denzel Washington in Man on Fire, Robert De
Niro in Hide and Seek and now Russell and Kris Kristofferson in Dreamer.
Elisabeth Shue, who had co-starred with the young actress in Hide and Seek,
signed on to play her mother in Dreamer because she was eager to work with
Fanning again.
"I was really so excited and thought, 'If there's a part, I don't care what
it is, I'm going to do it just because I love her so much,' " said Shue,
describing Fanning as a brilliant natural performer who remains a bright,
unaffected child despite the trappings of stardom.
"She is a little girl," Shue said. "Her playful spirit is very much alive
when she's not working. Even when she is working, she comes and she runs and
hugs everybody in the morning, and her beautiful smile just sort of forces
everybody, pushes them, to open up to the day."
For Fanning, who recalls always playing little pretend scenes around her
home in Georgia, film acting is the ultimate game of make-believe. She
showed a flair for acting early on, and after a brief stint at a local
playhouse, Fanning moved with her parents to Los Angeles.
Her mother accompanies her to sets, but Fanning said her parents are not
actively involved in her film choices. The decisions are all hers.
"I have a feeling it's kind of like working with a horse that's too big for
you to control yourself, too strong," said Kristofferson, who plays
Fanning's grandfather in Dreamer. "You can just sort of guide it or aid it
in living. I don't think it was anybody's idea but Dakota's to be who she
is, and they supported her."
Fanning approaches acting with the energy of a child at play and no
affectation, just a pragmatic desire to fill the character's shoes when the
camera rolls.
To capture a sad mood in I Am Sam, she thought about her goldfish that had
recently died, but she is hardly a junior method actor referencing her own
life for emotional experiences to embody what a character is going through.
"I think it's just when you're playing the character, just kind of into your
character, you're kind of thinking and feeling what she's thinking and
feeling at the time," Fanning said. "So if she's doing that, you're doing
that."
In Dreamer, Fanning dominates scene after scene, notably in a sequence in
the family's horse stable with most of her co-stars, including Russell,
Kristofferson and David Morse as the villain trying to buy back the injured
thoroughbred by waving a fistful of dollars in Fanning's face.
The tiny Fanning goes toe-to-toe with the hulking Morse, mouthing off and
knocking his character down to her size.
"That's my favourite scene, because we were all together," Fanning said.
"Those are my favourite scenes, when we're all there having a good time, and
it was a scene that we could really have fun with and be really mean and do
different things. I think it's cool to do movies and do things that you
wouldn't be able to do in real life, and that's a thing I wouldn't get to do
in life, so that's what makes it fun."
Does Fanning ever feel she's missing out on her childhood?
"No, no. Never," Fanning said. "Not at all. I enjoy what I'm doing so much
that that doesn't even bother me at all, because I feel like I wouldn't be
as happy."

I agree. She is a beautiful child, and so articulate and poised.
Actually, I haven't seen her in too many movies, but I've seen her on

Russell stunned by child star Fanning
19/09/2005 - 08:36:51
Child star Dakota Fanning has stunned co-star Kurt Russell with her acting
ability and well-rounded attitude.
The talented youngster stars alongside veteran actor Russell in forthcoming
film Dreamer, in which she plays his precocious daughter.
Russell says: "I guarantee you, (Dakota) is the best actress I will work
with in my entire career."
Speaking of her film reviews, Fanning says philosophically: "That's just
somebody else's opinion. I don't think that's really for me to worry about."

But if this same look was presented on a regular woman (i.e. someone not
fucking Depp), we would all tell her to get her teeth fixed and to drop the
baby voice. Sheesh. Some how becoming famous cancels out your flaws or
makes them something everyone MUST have.

Recent pictures of Haley Joel show he's moving into early adulthood and
leaving behind his pre-teen image. In other words, he's not the cute kid
anymore, and as I suspect from his decision to do another independent movie
after such a long absence, he's not getting the offers from major studios
like he once was. Very few cute kids grow up to be very good looking adults.
Most become average looking adults, and that's not going to be enough for
the big screen. A few cute child actors have bucked the trend, particularly
Soleil Moon Frye, but most come out of it looking like Susan Olsen. Others
who were ugly as children, like The Olsen Twins, can grow up to be fairly
hot. But it's rare for a cute child actor to make the transition to hot
leading actor/actress.

Allow me to introduce Dakota to reality: in just a few more years she won't
be marketable. She'll probably need to go the Jodie Foster route and get an
education and then come back to Hollywood as a mature adult, but don't
expect Dakota to be in demand between 16 and 23. But Anna Sophia Robb from
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" will be. She's only 12, but Sophia-Robb
is the rare, truly beautiful kid who will grow up to be a stunning adult.

Haley Joel Osment Works Again

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com)- Back in 1999, he was seeing dead people. Then in
2001, he was seeing freaky alien/robot creatures in the future. Since 2003,
though, nobody has seen much of Haley Joel Osment. Cinema's most reclusive
17-year-old Oscar nominee is about to return.
After moving out of the public spotlight, letting Dakota Fanning monopolize
the market on preternaturally mature tykes and presumably going through
puberty, Osment is set to star in "Home of the Giants," an independent
coming-of-age drama. The film, with an Indiana basketball backdrop, would be
Osment's first feature since "Secondhand Lions."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Giants" is written and directed by
Rusty Gorman and focuses on an Indiana teen (Osment) who idolizes a local
basketball legend, but comes to see the truth about the hoopster after they
become friends.
Shooting on the project is expected to begin in North Carolina next month.
Osment was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe for "The Sixth Sense"
before he turned 12. He also snagged critical kudos for Steve Spielberg's
"Artificial Intelligence: AI." After a brief hiatus, Osment appeared in
"Lions," before taking a second leave of big screen absence

Really? Oh, come on... she's kind of sexy in that kind of silly,
tweety-birdy, French way (btw I don't think she's as silly as she acts, even
though she did date that ludicrous poseur Lenny Kravitz). The French love
that babydoll, pouty, baby-voiced thing. She's kind of like Kate Moss
without the awesome bone structure or the Brit cool, or Avril Lavigne
without the snot.

You said it. Those teeth! Sheesh. Almost like Dakota Fanning and she's a

Fanning: "Spielberg Taught Me More Than School"
Child actress Dakota Fanning relished working with legendary director
Steven Spielberg on War Of The Worlds, because he taught her more than she
could have hoped to learn at school. The 11-year-old, who first grabbed
attention starring alongside Sean Penn in I Am Sam aged only 7, always makes
the most of the opportunities which come her way by remembering every scarp
on new information she learns. She tells the New York Daily News, "I always
think I might never have this opportunity again so I try to cram a lot of
information into my brain. I still have my normal school where I learn about
spelling and math and science and all that stuff, but I feel when I go on a
movie set, I'm learning about movies. I learned 100 lessons a day from
Steven. Everything that came out of his mouth, I thought, 'Okay, I have to
remember that!'" And the Saving Private Ryan film-maker is equally as
impressed with his young charge: "Dakota is unaware of how talented she
actually is. During filming, she quickly understands each scene or
situation, measures it against how she'd really react, and acts the truth
every time."
