What a fantastic film.
Walberg's best role to date. It's the movie that convinced me he can
act. How does Paul Thomas Anderson get these performances out of
people? Heather Graham, for god's sake!
Everyone goes above and beyond in his movies - except Tom Cruise who
only knows how to overact. No, I didn't like him in Magnolia at all and
can think of a dozen actors who would have been better. Magnolia
suffers because of Tom's involvement, and isn't nearly as good as PTA's
other films.
Adam Sandler was fantastic in Punch Drunk Love, Emily Watson a
revelation. - PDL is a very under-rated film, BTW.
Leo had no place in BN. The thought makes me cringe.

... flaunt it. Peter Munro investigates the enduring phenomenon of the It
girl.
Between parties, power naps and posing next to racehorses, the younger
Hilton sister looked down the camera and said she did not want to be an It
Girl. It was an odd insight into the impermanency of the spotlight, coming
as it did from someone basking in its glare. "I think 'It' means being the
girl of the moment," Nicky, 20, told a Channel Seven reporter. "And I don't
really like it because it's like 'there goes that It Girl', and all of a
sudden you're not It any more."
The young heirs to the Hilton hotel fortune were It, for this week at least.
They were the most photographed creatures at Melbourne's spring racing
carnival, splashed on newspaper front pages in Sydney and down there.
Channel Seven, which paid for the Hiltons' air fares, accommodation (in the
rival Hyatt chain) and styling, was delighted. "We quite often have
international guests," spokeswoman Sido Kitchin crowed. "Last year we had
the quite lovely [actress] Heather Graham. She was quite sweet but she
didn't cause quite the same stir as these girls."
The extensive publicity ballooned beyond the racetrack, with front-page
photographs of Paris, 22, snogging Robert Mills, the ubiquitous former
Australian Idol contestant, on a hotel balcony.
It Girls have always put it about for the cameras. The term was first used
to describe silent movie actress Clara Bow, a former beauty contest winner
who flaunted her sex appeal on screen in the 1927 film It. According to the
film's publicity, "'It' is that quality possessed by some which draws all
others with its magnetic force."
That It quality might be as simple as looking good and being photographed,
often. All other qualities are optional extras.
"Look at Paris and Nicky. What have they ever done really?" asks Australian
Consolidated Press editorial director Louisa Hatfield. "Basically all they
are is red-carpet junkies who literally have so much money that they don't
really have to do anything apart from turn up to party."
Hatfield, whose editorial role covers weekly women's magazines NW and
Woman's Day, says she uses the United States and Britain as a guide to who
is It and who is Out.
Wealth is important. Vanity Fair's September 2000 edition on It Girls
included heirs to a US steel fortune, banks and a billion-dollar cosmetics
company.
The British magazines feature pages of young and fabulously wealthy nobodies
chugging bottles of bubbly. These magazine celebrities are like the
twin-set-wearing Sloane Rangers - a group of rich young women who chortled
their way around West London's social set in the early 1980s - but perhaps
with less substance.
"The UK press still has this fascination with incredibly rich young things,"
says Hatfield, who worked on Fleet Street before moving to Australia. She
believes wealth will soon become as important to Australia's celebrity
crowd, with the teenage children of Sydney's wealthy set creating the It
people of tomorrow.
Some It girls make their name by marrying into wealth. Jodhi Packer was a
bikini model who appeared in ads for Moove milk before she married James.
Their separation only added to her celebrity.
Good looks are essential to become an It girl, according to Holly Byrnes,
social writer for The Sun-Herald. "A pretty face... guarantees you a few
second glances. In all honesty there doesn't need to be a lot of substance."
Other glamorous It girls, not fortunate enough to have been born into
wealth, follow a well-trodden path to celebrity that features celebrity
partners, social activism and multiskilling.
Model Annalise Braakensiek first appeared in magazines as the fiancee of
musician Phil Ceberano. When they separated two years later she launched her
own website, joined a campaign opposing battery hens and started a
television career, including a role in the SBS series Pizza. Model Tara Moss
first featured as the fiancee of Australian TV actor Peter Mochrie. When
they split she published her first crime novel, headed a forum against
eating disorders and became a TV panellist on Beauty & the Beast.
Byrnes says It girls must constantly reinvent themselves to stay in the
spotlight. "You have to be of the moment," she says. "You have to seize the
attention through whatever project you're working on. If you keep evolving
with these types of jobs it keeps you fresh and on the social radar."
Kitchin says she was confident the Hiltons, whom she first approached in
July, would still be It girls in November. "I think they'll still be hot for
a few years yet, then they'll probably mature into something else," she
says.
The Hiltons seem to have already learned the importance of diversification.
Paris will appear in a US reality TV show next month and is reportedly
recording a dance album. Nicky designs handbags.
They are also on a good gig as It girls, no matter what its duration. Kichin
denies reports that Channel Seven paid them an appearance fee but admits it
paid for air fares, make-up and hair styling, and helped them choose outfits
from racks of clothes offered as gifts or loans by Australian designers.
Following their appearances at Derby Day and the Melbourne Cup, it paid for
their five-day holiday on the Gold Coast.
A former Big Brother contestant, Pete Timbs, says he enjoyed a similar spree
in the three weeks after his eviction from the show, including regular
nightclub appearances for up to $2000. He now writes for the ACP magazine TV
Week.
Former reality show contestants are constant features on Australia's It
circuit. Some, like Timbs, maintain regular appearances in the women's
magazines. Others flared brilliantly for a short time then faded - his
fellow contestant Sara-Marie, for example, was last seen in the suburban
newspapers doing ads for herpes treatments.
New Idea editor-in-chief Jennifer Gilbert argues that It girls must be
famous for more than just being famous. Ultimately, however, the It Girl is
the girl of the moment.
"I suppose it is whoever people are responding to at that moment," she says.
recalling that Paris Hilton had previously appeared "very occasionally in
our best and worst dressed section and suddenly one minute they've arrived
and in another 12 months people will go 'Hilton who?"

HEATHER GRAHAM IN LOVE SPLIT
"Boogie Nights" beauty Heather Graham is a single woman once again after
parting ways with her producer beau Chris Weitz.
The couple, who dated for more than two years, remain close, despite their
romantic meltdown.
Graham tells Star magazine, "We're actually just friends. We broke up a
little bit ago."
While pals say the pair's relationship dissolved in September, Graham still
insisted on attending a October 24 fundraiser for the International
Foundation for Terror Act Victims, which is close to Weitz's heart.
She adds, "When he called me about this event, I was happy to do it with
him."

London, Heather Graham has done acting stints in some dysfunctional
environments, but wait until she meets the doctors of Sacred Heart.
The "Boogie Nights" co-star has signed on for an eight-episode role on NBC's
"Scrubs."
"Heather Graham is a first-class actress whose beauty and comic sensibilities
will mesh perfectly with the unique humor of 'Scrubs,'" said NBC Entertainment
President Kevin Reilly.
The actress will play an attending psychiatrist on the medical comedy.
Creator Bill Lawrence is already looking forward to weaving Graham into the
plot lines for the fourth season of "Scrubs."
"I've always found Heather incredibly funny and can't wait to start writing
this character for her," Lawrence said.
Graham will make her first "Scrubs" appearance in the show's season premiere,
which comes on Aug. 30.
In addition to more serious roles in "From Hell" and "Drugstore Cowboy," Graham
has appeared in a variety of big-screen comedies including "Austin Powers: The
Spy Who Shagged Me" and "Bowfinger." She made a visit to Fox's "Arrested
Development" this past season.
