Holly changes tune
From Sydney Confidential
June 17, 2005
SHE sacked ex-manager Scott Michaelson because "she hated the way he made
her wear hardly anything", but two years on, Holly Valance appears to have
changed her tune.
The former Neighbours babe got her kit off on US TV this week when she
guest-starred in the series Entourage - an HBO production about an LA actor
and his wannabe mates.
The raunchy scenes feature the one-time pop princess in the role of
"Leanna", who wastes no time in getting hot and heavy with a male co-star.
Since leaving London, and her singing career, for the bright lights of
Hollywood, Valance has been unable to escape the sexy pin-up image born with
the release of her first single, Kiss Kiss.
The 22-year-old's steamy performance in Entourage follows her film debut in
the yet to be released college-romp Pledge This, a National Lampoon flick
that also stars a scantily clad Paris Hilton. Valance herself admitted that
the film was "pretty crude and lightweight".
Maybe Michaelson should book himself a flight to Hollywood.

Aussie battler
March 14, 2005
Axed and ridiculed in its first year, Neighbours has gone on to become a
national institution. Michael Idato celebrates its 20th birthday.
Launched by the Seven Network on March 18, 1985, Neighbours struggled for
four months before a quiet, ignominious cancellation. In an extraordinary
move, Channel Ten bought the show, relaunching it to an indifferent audience
and sceptical critics.
But not only did Neighbours survive to tell the tale, this week it
celebrates its 20th year on air.
"Everything has to line up in the universe to get any TV show made, let
alone be successful," says executive producer Ric Pellizzeri.
"For that to happen twice, it is just extraordinary and when you're fighting
those odds it shouldn't surprise us that it's still here 20 years later."
At 4675 episodes (the 4676th airs tonight), it has become the
longest-running primetime soap in Australia, and the second-longest running
in the world, behind Britain's Coronation Street. It has been sold to 57
countries and while America has proven a nut too tough to crack, the show's
success in Britain is dizzying.
The story really begins not in 1985, but five years earlier when Seven
commissioned two drama pilots. The first, A Special Place, told the story of
an elderly woman who looked after street kids. The second, People Like Us,
was about five families living on the one street. Neither materialised, but
the second concept simmered on the backburner and resurfaced several years
later.
Conceived by Reg Watson, it was titled Neighbours and set in Erinsborough -
a fictional leafy outer-Melbourne suburb. Pin Oak Court in Melbourne's
Vermont South was chosen for the exteriors and rechristened Ramsay Street.
Although no one knew it at the time, a TV hit was born.
The original characters included plumber Max Ramsay (Francis Bell), after
whose family the street was named, his migrant wife Maria (Dasha Blahova)
and their sons Shane (Peter O'Brien) and Danny (David Clencie). Widower Jim
Robinson (Alan Dale) lived next door with his kids, Paul (Stefan Dennis),
Julie (Vikki Blanche), Scott (Darius Perkins) and Lucy (Kylie Flinker), and
mother-in-law Helen Daniels (Anne Haddy).
Neighbours drew immediate comparison to Coronation Street, though in style
and tone it borrowed more from Britain's Brookside and America's Knots
Landing, both set in cul-de-sacs.
The latter was the blueprint for a genre of suburban soaps that became
immensely popular in the late 1980s.
After four months, and cripplingly low ratings in Sydney, Neighbours was
cancelled and the sun set on Ramsay Street. The production company Grundy
Television, however, had discreetly pitched the series to other networks,
and Ten, keen to groom a prime-time drama hit, decided better the devil it
knew.
Guy Pearce and Craig McLachlan.
Neighbours was repackaged (and, in the case of Darius Perkins, who was
replaced with Jason Donovan as Scott Robinson, recast) and the production
moved to new digs at Ten's Melbourne studios in Nunawading. The race was on
to turn Neighbours from ugly duckling into glittering swan.
The show debuted on Ten in January 1986. By April, a tomboy called Charlene
(Kylie Minogue) had moved into the neighbourhood. Her first encounter with
Scott - she punched him in the face after mistaking him for a robber - gave
no hint that they would become one of Australian television's iconic
romances, on and off screen.
The show's salvation was a marketing blitz on a scale previously unseen in
Australia. Ten's director of publicity, Brian Walsh, one of the best
publicity stuntmen in Australia, toured the cast in the shopping centres of
every capital city, generating unprecedented frenzy on radio and in
afternoon newspapers. Neighbours mania was born.
Linda Walker, working on Neighbours in 1986 as a production assistant (she
is now the line producer, in charge of the day-to-day production), got her
first inkling of the show's popularity when normally subdued location shoots
started attracting crowds. Within months hundreds had turned to thousands
and she witnessed the kind of scenes normally associated with bands like the
Beatles.
"You can't believe the number of people who would surround buses and
trucks," she says.
"We were trying to get work done with all these screaming kids."
Stefan Dennis (who has just returned as Paul Robinson after an absence of 12
years) says he was mystified by the show's sudden success. "It was one of
those things that happened to come out of the bag, whether it was the right
place at the right time or the right smiling faces, who knows?"
The show's success in Britain, however, is easier to explain. Dennis
believes that Neighbours, like Home and Away, offered its British audience a
brighter, more colourful alternative to the traditionally grim situations of
their soap opera staples, Coronation Street and EastEnders. "They are quite
dour, heavy and suppressed shows, whereas Neighbours was more uplifting," he
says.
Neighbours' portrayal of an affluent white-bread suburban utopia doesn't sit
well with everyone. "You would struggle to find an Australian suburb that is
like Neighbours these days," says Andrew Mercado, author of Super Aussie
Soaps. "We live in a multicultural society, and our soaps don't really
reflect that." The show's one flirtation with multiculturalism, the Lim
family, was not a great success. The Hong Kong migrants were in and out of
the show within six weeks.
Overall, however, the success of the series over two decades speaks for
itself. After Donovan and Minogue left the series to pursue pop careers in
Britain, Guy Pearce, Craig McLachlan, Natalie Imbruglia, Daniel MacPherson,
Holly Valance and Delta Goodrem followed - though the series never quite
returned to those early heights.
The Nunawading site where Neighbours has been filmed for 19 of its 20 years
was sold to Global Television in 1994. Neighbours is still filmed there,
though the studio's heart beats a little more slowly.
"It's a bit of a ghost town compared to what it was in 1985," says Dennis,
sitting in the canteen, which is connected by a warren of corridors to the
cavernous soundstages that once housed such iconic TV series as Carson's Law
and Prisoner.
At 20, Neighbours is showing its age but there's no suggestion its days are
numbered. Its national audience hugs the 1 million mark, a respectable
audience for an early evening drama, although less than the current darling,
Seven's Home and Away.
The key to its ongoing success, says actress Jackie Woodburne, who plays
teacher Susan Kennedy, is tapping the show's, and the audience's, strong
sense of community. "It's a soap opera, so every story is a heightened
story, but at the heart of it are people who genuinely care about each
other," she says.
Pellizzeri agrees. "It is the need to belong, to be a part of a community,
the need to know you have Neighbours, friends, and acquaintances who will
support you," he says.
Ten has signed the series for at least three more years, and Pellizzeri
promises a year of onscreen fireworks, including a major storyline in June
to mark the anniversary featuring the return of several iconic characters.
"Neighbours is a relevant contemporary show," says Pellizzeri. "It's still
telling stories that are relevant to you and me, to people in this country
and the way they live their lives."

Crowe to feature in Neighbours special
06/03/2005 - 16:04:10
Russell Crowe has taken a break from his multi-million dollar movie career -
to star in a one-off special celebrating the 20th anniversary of Australian
TV soap Neighbours.
The Gladiator actor appeared in an early episode of the long-running show in
the late 1980s, playing the love interest of pop babe Kylie Minogue's
character Charlene Mitchell.
And despite the fact his presence in Neighbours was only fleeting, Crowe
agreed to feature in an upcoming TV show devoted to the show because he
recognises its vital role in the development of his career.
The soap also gave stars including Guy Pearce, Jason Donovan, Natalie
Imbruglia, Delta Goodrem and Holly Valance their first taste of fame.

Kylie's back in our heads
Nui Te Koha

KYLIE Minogue has smashed another sales record, even before her new album
goes on sale tomorrow.
Australian pre-sales of Body Language have reached a staggering 160,000
copies.
The figure guarantees the album an easy ride to No. 1 and double platinum
status.
"It is everything I wanted it to be," Minogue yesterday said of her boldest
album to date.
"I am a very lucky girl. And I'm very pleased," she told the Herald Sun.
Body Language looks certain to outstrip challenges from new albums from
Holly Valance and Britney Spears.
Until now, John Farnham held the pre-sales record with 140,000 copies of his
greatest hits package, One Voice.
Minogue's Australian marketing manager, Dean McLachlan, yesterday
co-ordinated a frantic drive to get Kylie's album into stores.
HMV stores in Bourke St and Chapel St will sell Body Language from midnight
tonight.
The demand for Body Language comes as researchers confirmed Minogue really
has the perfect bottom.
UK academic John Manning says the key to the ideal female derriere lies in
the ratio between waist and hips.
This is reached by dividing the waist measurement by the hip measurement and
should ideally be 0.7, meaning the waist would be around a third smaller
than the hips.
The findings help explain why Minogue's tiny waist and rounded bottom are
seen by millions of men as the best in the business.

Valance to pay manager $350,000
November 06, 2003
POP starlet Holly Valance has been ordered to pay more than $350,000 to
former manager Scott Michaelson.
Holly Valance outside the NSW Supreme Court / File
Ms Valance was last month sued in the NSW Supreme Court for breach of
contract with Mr Michaelson after she dumped him 15 months before the
completion of their three-year contract.
Ms Valance was also ordered to pay Mr Michaelson's legal costs.
Justice Clifford Einstein found Ms Valance had shown a "calculated
disregard" for Mr Michaelson, whom she claimed did not have enough
experience to manage her rising fame.
Mr Michaelson, better known as Brad Willis from television soap Neighbours,
argued he gave the then 15-year-old her start in acting and secured her
recording contract.
Justice Einstein today ordered Ms Valance pay over $350,000 in compensation
to Mr Michaelson for loss of earnings and management commission he would
have made during the term of their contract.
Part of that amount also included money ($47,264.56) from shares Ms Valance
and Mr Michaelson had bought together on the London Stock Exchange.
It also included commission on her public appearances and a percentage of
three songs she recorded during the term of the contract.
Mr Michaelson today said he wanted to move on with his life now the bitter
stoush was over.
"I hope that I have been able to represent in some way, the many managers
who have been in a similar position to me, but have not had the means to
proceed to court," Mr Michaelson, who is currently overseas, said in a
written statement.
"I have worked very hard over the past 10 years on my management company and
I am proud of what I have achieved, and now I look forward to the next
chapter of my life."
Ms Valance's lawyers refused to comment.

Diva of the pack
November 10, 2003
The Sun-Herald
Enduring pop princess Kylie Minogue once again defies critics to redefine
herself, Christine Sams reports.
So here we go again. Kylie Minogue is dressed up as a rock chick, newly
peroxided hair, staring seductively at the camera. In the photo shoot for
her new album, Body Language, revealed on the cover of S for the first time,
the message is clear: I'm strong, I'm sexy and I'm definitely hanging
around.
At 35, Minogue has broken almost every rule of female pop stardom. Not only
has she remained phenomenally popular in the UK and Australia (with a newly
keen audience in the US) with a career spanning three decades, she is also
about to release her ninth studio album after selling millions worldwide.
Her last album, Fever, sold 6 million copies alone.
Yet, deep down, we know it could have gone so horribly wrong. With that
spiral perm, those dodgy overalls and her perennial white-toothed grin on
Neighbours, Minogue could have easily spent 2003 starring in "where are they
now?" specials. Or she might have gone quietly back to a nine-to-five
existence, like so many other soapie stars after their brief time in the
sun.
But nobody is rolling their eyes at news of Minogue's new album release.
Even the most hardened rock industry critics are begrudgingly impressed by
the singer's phenomenal selling power - and there's a consensus it will
continue indefinitely.
The fact we take Minogue very seriously indeed these days is perhaps her
greatest achievement.
The singer herself remains based in the UK, and is busy rehearsing for her
one-off performance at London's Hammersmith Apollo theatre on Saturday
night. The performance is to showcase the songs from Body Language (the
concert will be televised in Australia later this month), with only 4000
fans watching the concert live.
Staged and choreographed by Minogue herself with her longtime creative
director William Baker - yes, the bloke who found those hotpants - the
concert is expected to unveil Minogue's new "rock chick" image, although her
music is anything but rock'n'roll.
Ironically, the new album, with its electro-trash retro feel, harks back to
the pop music produced in the 1980s - the era when Minogue was best known as
Charlene from Neighbours. (And her somewhat daggy single, Locomotion, was
steaming its way into the top of the Australian charts.)
But the singer is in a vastly different position today: the undisputed queen
of UK pop, firmly in control of Kylie Inc and CEO of her own entertainment
company, Kaydeebee - so named because of the initials of Minogue and her
siblings, Danielle and Brendan. If the "Danielle" sounds a bit odd to Dannii
Minogue fans, that's how Kylie Minogue addresses her sister in the
thank-yous on her newest album.
Like many of Minogue's career moves, her one-off Money Can't Buy performance
in London is undoubtedly a brilliant marketing strategy: Minogue only has to
perform once, but the footage is likely to be picked up by nearly two
million fans in Europe via internet webcasts alone.
Subsequent webcasts and TV specials are likely to broaden the global
audience to something in the region of 8 million viewers. Not bad for one
night's work. As for the music itself, Parlophone Records managing director
Miles Leonard has told British reporters the album is vastly different to
Minogue's Fever. "It feels like a definite move on from the last album,
without losing sight of the quality control on songs," he said.
"It has to be fresh. It wasn't a case of getting all the publishers to send
around their songs. We were more interested in people collaborating with
Minogue herself to create something new."
But the two key buzz words in Minogue's camp haven't changed one bit:
"quality" and "control".
Pop music has long been slagged off in various sections of the music
industry, but it is undoubtedly its biggest money-spinner. In an industry
where "hot" bands and performers can disappear within months, if not weeks,
after hitting the top of the charts, Minogue's longevity is legendary.
Much of it is down to her own level of control over her career, which has
developed substantially in the past decade, combined with the support of her
close-knit management team, led by long-term manager Terry Blamey.
Blamey is firmly in control of Minogue's media exposure and he tightly
limits her one-on-one interviews with the press, with the full approval of
his star client. Glamorous photos of Minogue are churned out on a regular
basis, but the singer herself rarely speaks at length to the press.
Even during Minogue's turbulent break-up with model James Gooding, which was
splashed all over the front pages of British newspapers, Blamey wisely held
off on a smear campaign against Gooding - the result being that Minogue said
very little, but weathered the public and private turmoil successfully. In
fact, the singer eventually blamed herself for the break-up, claiming it was
the incredible demands of her work schedule which forced the couple apart.
"Imagine how frustrating it must have been for them, wanting to tell the
whole story," said a source close to Minogue in the UK. "But Kylie was very
upset and embarrassed and determined to bring the focus back to the music
eventually, and it's worked." Of course, it doesn't hurt that Minogue now
has Olivier Martinez by her side. (James who?) And music critics are
speculating that one of the key reasons Minogue will perform only once over
the next few months is to avoid putting similar pressure on her relationship
with Martinez. (Minogue and Martinez are expected to return to Australia
over Christmas, but the visit is "strictly private" says a spokeswoman for
Martinez.)
Even as the singles from Body Language are rolled out over the next couple
of months, Minogue's reign will be challenged by other pop singers including
Holly Valance, Pink and Britney Spears. But there's still plenty they can
learn from the princess of pop.
For starters, Minogue was never afraid to get an education from other
celebrities. INXS lead singer, the late Michael Hutchence, was undoubtedly
her best-known tutor (in music and other "arts"). But Minogue has regularly
paid homage to others, including Madonna, often crediting her for
influencing her career.
Other singers including Olivia Newton-John have played a role in Minogue's
success - and if the singer was hoping to emulate Sandy from Grease, she's
gone pretty close this time around.
Looking at the biker shots on Body Language, there's no doubt Minogue is
easily on a par with Madonna in the reinvention stakes.
These days she's the undisputed leader of the pack.
Body language: The verdict
The eyeliner maketh the rock chick. Or so you would think, judging by Kylie
Minogue's latest look. But even with her changing make-up (and, some might
say, her changing face and bustline), Minogue has stuck firmly to what she
knows best with her latest release: pure pop music.
At last count, Minogue's worldwide sales were 65 million units, including
singles and albums, a simply phenomenal figure.
To maintain the momentum on Body Language she's shifted towards recording
"hot" retro sounds, with a number of tracks featuring electro-influences,
synthesiser backing tracks and 1980s styling (a creative move also employed
by Holly Valance, who releases her album tomorrow).
Many of Minogue's tunes also have an obvious R&B feel, which may reflect her
intention to shift towards mainstream attention in the United States.
Some local fans have been unimpressed with her first single, Slow, but the
minimalist beats and lyrics set the tone for the entire album. Other sultry
R&B-style tracks include Chocolate (love the title) and Red Blooded Woman.
Obviously the "Olivier effect" has well and truly taken hold!
Body Language will be released in Australia next Sunday and in the UK next
Monday. The US release has been scheduled for February 10, with the singer
likely to travel to the US for a promotional tour

Label drops singers
Cameron Adams
music writer

SINGERS Tina Arena and Bec Cartwright have been dropped from their record
labels after disappointing sales.
Holly Valance has dodged the chop.
An industry source said Arena and her label, Sony Music, came to a "mutual
decision" to end their decade-long relationship this week.
Arena's 1994 album, Don't Ask, sold more than half a million copies in
Australia, spawning a string of lucrative hits.
But her 2001 album, Just Me, struggled to get airplay and failed in the
charts. Sony reportedly rejected a new album by Arena, now based in London,
this year.
She is expected to offer it to other record labels.
Home & Away star Cartwright's TV profile wasn't enough to lift poor sales of
her debut album last year and she has had plans for a second album with
Warner Music shelved.
However, despite music industry rumours, ex-Neighbours star Holly Valance's
record contract has not been axed.
Valance's latest album, State of Mind, sold a pitiful 2000 copies in
Australia in its two weeks on the chart.
Tellingly, no more songs will be released from the record, which has spawned
just one single, the title track.
Valance's manager, Todd Wagstaff, said the singer was in LA preparing an
American release of the album.
"She's writing new songs in LA, she's got a new acting agent and she's
testing for films over there," he said.
Valance is signed to Universal Music for Australia. Her debut album, spawned
three top 10 hits in 2002.

Dumping Delta's 'smart'
By Kathy McCabe
October 26, 2004
MARK Philippoussis' mum last night defended her son over his split with
chart star Delta Goodrem - saying it could help his flagging tennis career.
Lost without you ... Delta and the Scud before their break-up.
Despite the Scud's affair with US heiress Paris Hilton, Rosanna
Philippoussis said her boy had done nothing of which to be ashamed.
"I don't have nothing bad to say about my son," she said.
"Mark was No.9 in the world 10 months ago and now he's 106. Well, he wants
to put his life back into tennis and with a relationship, he can't do that."
It's now claimed Philippoussis dumped Goodrem by phone three days before
hooking up with Hilton.
Sources said he ended their 10-month romance on October 13, saying the
long-distance relationship wasn't working and said he planned to concentrate
on tennis.
Three days later he met Hilton at a birthday party in LA. Insiders said
Holly Valance played matchmaker.
Hilton dropped the bombshell that she and the Scud were an item at the
weekend, telling fans in a US shop: "I've got a new man and I'm head over
heels in love. His name is Mark Philippoussis."
But yesterday the socialite was acting outraged that her comments had been
passed to the press.
Her publicist Richard Squire, said the Hilton family was "not happy".
"The message from Paris was 'What is this all about?"' he said. "It was
probably just some throwaway comment."
Hilton had told two Australian competition winners in a Los Angeles jeans
store that she was in a relationship with Philippoussis.
She produced an SMS photograph of the tennis player half-naked and said he
had broken up with Goodrem because she was "boring."
Mr Squire said he heard nothing despite being in the store.
He said Philippoussis had known Hilton some time, adding: "Tara Reid went
out with Mark and she is a good friend of Paris."
Goodrem, in London to launch her new single Out Of The Blue and the album
Mistaken Identity, maintained silence yesterday.
The 19-year-old has stated she wants the focus back on her music and not her
love life. "She just wants this to go away," was the line from the Goodrem
camp.
The star may struggle to sing Out Of The Blue, which remains at No 1 this
week, with the same emotion which inspired it - her love for Philippoussis.
But she will have no trouble paying tribute in song to two staunch
supporters with the track You Are My Rock, which closes her second album.
It is dedicated to brother Trent and friend Jude Bolton, who kept her
positive during her battle with cancer.

LOL, Sponky...every time I watch a rerun of Neighbours, my spouse
always yells from his den, "Call me if my girl is onscreen!" I always
oblige. Once it was when "Flick" was at school, and she was wearing a
little uniform. I don't think the husband has ever quite really
recovered from that!
I really enjoy Neighbours...it's soooo bad, it's a helluva lotta fun
to watch. And the accents are so interesting to this Yankee who
studied liguistics in her college days.

Holly hurt by Paris claims
By Patrick O'Neil and Luke Dennehy
October 27, 2004
HOLLY Valance has denied she was the mischievous matchmaker who set up Mark
Philippoussis and Paris Hilton.
Bond ... Holly Valance, right, with friend and former co-star Delta Goodrem
/ File
Valance said last night she was deeply hurt by allegations she had any role
in the split between the Scud and her former Neighbours co-star Delta
Goodrem.
"I categorically deny ever having had a conversation with Mark in my life,
let alone playing matchmaker with one of my friend's boyfriends," she said.
"Delta and I worked together briefly on Neighbours and (the allegation)
absolutely sickens and disgusts me.
"What is more upsetting is the fact that Delta has to hear from the media
that one of her fellow co-workers and a friend has tried to destroy what I
knew to be a very positive relationship."
Valance and Hilton recently finished shooting the film National Lampoon's
Pledge This in the US. The pair play sorority sisters.
But Valance said she only spent seven days working with the hotel heiress
and did not know her socially.
Valance said she only had a small role in the film, her first acting attempt
since her stint as Flick on Neighbours.
The pop star's mother, Rachel Stevens, said her daughter had only met
Philippoussis once.
The Scud dumped Goodrem on October 13 after a 10-month love affair.
Philippoussis blamed the split on his desire to focus on his flagging tennis
career.
Just days later, Hilton revealed the Scud was her latest partner.
Goodrem has withdrawn from some interviews in London to avoid the spotlight
on her split with the tennis player.

Holly's prickly presence
By Toby Forage
October 25, 2004
DELTA Goodrem's former Neighbours co-star Holly Valance may be inadvertently
to blame for a devastating split with the perennial loser of tennis Mark
Philippoussis.
Old pals ... Delta's pop career has flourished while Holly's dived early.
The Sun reported today that Valance, who lost her record deal after albums
Footprints and State Of Mind flopped like lead balloons, helped to organise
a night out with Paris Hilton and Philippoussis and they seem to have hit it
off.
Sexy song bird Valance and the super social hotel heiress are currently co
stars in National Lampoon's latest flick Pledge This, although neither has
scored a major role.
An insider told The Sun: "Holly hooked them up and they had a wild night
out. Now Mark is Paris's latest obsession.
"She is telling everyone Mark ended it because Delta is boring."
Hilton reportedly declared over the weekend: "I've got a new man . he's so
hot. His name is Mark Philippoussis."
Initial reports suggested another blonde tearaway - actor Tara Reid, who was
linked romantically with the Scud last year - may have introduced him to her
notorious party-pal Hilton.
According to the Goodrem camp, Philippoussis didn't even admit his new
affair personally. Delta found out via media reports before the eventual
confirmation came from her mother and manager Lea Goodrem.
It was an alleged affair between Delta and Irish pop hunk Brian McFadden
that first sparked the rumours of a split with Philippoussis. However, both
Delta and McFadden denied their relationship was anything more than
professional after they recorded a duet.
The former Westlife star used Delta as a shoulder to cry on after his own
love life went down the gurgler with a split from wife Kerry.
Ironically they now have more in common than ever after losing lovers within
weeks of each other.

I call bullshit on this. My firm just billed nearly a grand to a
british bank for arranging for an expedited work visa for a freakin'
financial analyst. I think the producers of CSI would do at least as
much for a featured actress.
