Second Cup Cafe: Amy Lee Of Evanescence
With 15 million records sold worldwide, and two Grammy Awards for their debut album "Fallen," Evanescence continues its stratospheric success with its latest release, "The Open Door." Lead singer Amy Lee joins us on the Second Cup Cafe.

By Ray Waddell
NASHVILLE (Billboard) - From unknown act to global headliner on one album
cycle, Grammy-winning rock band Evanescence may well be the poster child for a
new touring model in breaking an act worldwide.
Evanescence's touring efforts have complemented its global multi-platinum
success, with the band's Wind-up debut, "Fallen," surpassing 11 million in
worldwide sales, according to the label.
And, as the group prepares a European tour to be followed by its biggest North
American trek to date, the touring strategy is deceptively simple: "No
borders," says Dave Kirby, the group's agent at the Agency Group (TAG). "If
there is an opportunity to play in front of people, we go there."
But if the strategy is simple, the tactics are not. "As we developed a strategy
at the beginning of Evanescence's career, we decided to move the band around
the planet like a chess piece," Kirby says.
Certainly the band was new to such globetrotting in the early days. "I had
never been out of the States before, so this was quite an experience," singer
Amy Lee says. "I didn't even have my passport when we first started."
Now Lee is cognizant of the differences between audiences in various countries.
"The biggest difference is between Japan and the rest of the world," she says.
"They're so respectful of what you're doing, and they pay attention to every
little cough."
The band has sold more than 400,000 albums in Japan, according to Sony, which
handles the album's international distribution.
TAG signed Evanescence in the fall of 2002, before the release of its debut
album a little over a year ago. The band, along with manager Dennis Rider, went
to Europe twice before the release date, Kirby says, and worked closely with
Sony so that the individual branches "felt a personal responsibility to help
this project succeed."
Evanescence has made its mark with live performances in the United States,
Canada, Europe, Australia, Japan and South America.
"If you want to break a band, you have to move that band around," Kirby
stresses. "You only get people's attention for a moment, and you need to be
there at that moment."
Even with increased security concerns, international touring is not
cost-prohibitive, according to Kirby.
"The flights are cheaper than they've ever been; the systems are more
streamlined in terms of immigration, cartage and taxation," Kirby says. "This
is not as complicated as it used to be."
CROSS-CONTINENT STOPS
A look at Evanescence's 2003 itinerary shows some remarkable jumps sandwiched
amid the traditional routing. Moves from continent to continent are not
uncommon.
"They played for 50,000 people at Rock Am Park in Nuremberg one day, then at
the KROQ Weenie Roast in L.A. the next week, then went back to Europe the week
after that," Kirby marvels. "It's not cheap to tour a band like that, but it's
the way to pop a band wide open in a number of different countries all at
once."
Kirby says touring became a moneymaker for Evanescence very quickly. "The band
was in profit by the third time they went to Europe last spring," he says. "And
in North America they were in profit by the time they returned that summer."
Part of the key to Evanescence's success as a touring act was establishing the
band as a headliner from the beginning.
"This band has never supported anyone," Kirby says. "They were headliners from
day one, very much at the direction of Steve Lerner and how the label wanted
this band to develop."
In the case of Evanescence, the planets lined up. According to Rich Levy, VP of
booking/national sales and marketing for Clear Channel Entertainment, "The
reason it all worked and the reason the band continues to grow is a 'perfect
storm' of reasons: Amy Lee is a star. The band is great live. The songs really
connect with people. The label, manager and agent are focused and committed --
they see the global picture. And finally, the band is not afraid to work."
Evanescence wrapped 14 dates in North America in February, playing 5,000- to
7,000-seat venues. When it returns to North America for a tour that runs July 7
through Aug. 15, the band will be solidly at the arena/amphitheater level.
Evanescence will follow rehearsals with a one-off at Tampa's Coachman Park May
16, succeeded by a European run that begins May 20 at Sheffield (U.K.) Arena
and wraps June 11 in Athens at Lycabettus.
The U.S. tour follows and is shaping up as a blockbuster.
"As a result of everybody's efforts -- primarily the band's -- this career is
in synch, including the label, touring and international," Kirby says.
Lee adds, "The hard part is over."

Actually I doubt very much that the singers have much say in the
matter. The network television companies control everything and they
are terrified of mike's cutting out or there being any ad libbing -
just ask CBS!

Thanks to AmIannoying.com I've finally looked at the complete roster of this
year's 50 Most Beautiful People, and I did much, much better than last year.
I was right on:
Charlize Theron
Johnny Depp
Maria Menounos
Lindsay Lohan
Scarlett Johansson
Nick Lachey
Jessica Simpson
Mischa Barton
Jude Law
Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson (Black Eyed Peas)
Beyonce
Jim Caviezel
That's right! 12 people -- tying the same number I scored in 2002 -- who I
picked made the cut, especially Menounos, Johansson, and Lohan (thank God
they didn't include Hilary Duff!). Fergie came as a surprise; I thought the
People editors would go with Evanescense's Amy Lee (they have the New Artist
Grammy; the Black Eyed Peas doesn't) or Kylie Minogue (she too has a
Grammy). I'm glad they stayed away from 50 Cent (Charles Fedullo asked me
whether or not he made it), but good call on Andre 3000.
Halle Berry may have tied with Julia Roberts with eight appearances, but
Jennifer Garner is on there FOR THE THIRD STRAIGHT TIME!!!!! So is Saturday
Night Live's Tina Fey for her second; where was Maya Rudolph?
And Entertainment Tonight is 2-2 this year on 50 Most Beautiful appearances,
with Menounos on the main list and occasional reporter Carlos Ponce making
the Spanish version. SuChin Pak of MTV News is also in; why not Los Angeles
newswoman Lauren Sanchez next year?
Now what about those who weren't beautiful enough? Jessica Alba may have
been voted 2003's Sexiest Woman in my year-end poll, but she was shut out
despite a sexy resurgence thanks to "Honey." No Keira Knightley, no Anderson
Cooper, no Clay Aiken, no Jamie-Lynn DiScala, no Andy Roddick, no Kristin
Kreuk, no Brooke Burns, and no Stacy Keibler!!! But alas, there's always
next year.
After all, this is the "50 Most Beautiful People" we're talking about; the
"in the World" was dropped a couple years ago. But man, that Lindsay Lohan
sure looks deliciously sexy. She's got a body that Duff or Alexa Vega would
NEVER have...and she's only 17 (till July 2)!!

"Lee is the words of Evanescence, and Moody was the music."
I don't think this is accurate. According to what I've read on message boards,
Ben Moody wrote some of the lyrics (e.g. "My Immortal") and Amy Lee some of the
music.
"...a duet - Broken, which she and Morgan wrote. "
Definitely inaccurate. "Broken" was written by Shaun Morgan and
Seether bassist Dale Stewart. Amy Lee co-arranged the strings on the
duet version of the song (on the CD "Disclaimer II"), which is a remake of the
unadorned version (without Lee) on the previous Seether album.
Good luck to Amy and the rest of the band on their next effort. I think it's
going to be difficult, with at least 50% of the creative team behind "Fallen"
no longer with them.

CARYN ROUSSEAU
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Evanescence has sold more than 10 million copies
of its debut album and won two Grammys, but it hasn't been easy for lead singer
Amy Lee.
She endured a very public split with her lead guitarist and a battle with radio
stations that believe women can't rock. Now, after finishing a huge tour, Lee
finds herself back where she started - writing the lyrics that catapulted an
Arkansas rock band to the world stage.
Lee was 14 when she founded the rock band with Ben Moody after they met at
summer camp. They wrote music together and played at small Little Rock venues
before landing a deal with Wind-up Records, which released Fallen in the spring
of 2003.
Moody abruptly left the band about seven months later, leaving Lee to work on
Evanescence's sophomore effort. But this time it will have to be different.
Lee is the words of Evanescence, and Moody was the music. She says not having
him around this time gives her liberty.
"Ben has a certain kind of pop structure that he follows that I wouldn't," the
22-year-old singer said backstage before her tour wrapped up in August with a
hometown Little Rock show. "He would always be corralling my ideas. It's going
to be cool this time to have more freedom, just in that there's more people
writing like a real band. Everybody's involved and we have a good successful
album under our belt, so there's less pressure."
Less pressure too, with Moody working with pop stars Kelly Clarkson (news) and
Avril Lavigne (news) and on several movie soundtracks.
"When Ben left the band we were all relieved," she said quietly. "It was a
really uncomfortable situation for everybody. It was completely unstable and
unhappy. It was a scary time before he left the band because I knew something
was going to happen and I didn't know what and I was afraid everything we
worked for had the potential of going down the toilet."
There's no word on when the next album will be released. Lee hopes to quell
fans' demands for new material with a DVD release of tour footage, possibly
around Thanksgiving. To see the band on stage is to realize how unique it
really is in today's pop-heavy music scene.
The most recent tour had Evanescence topping a bill that also featured rock
band Seether, headed by Lee's boyfriend, Shaun Morgan. At the last show in
North Little Rock, she knelt backstage as Seether played, cheering and clapping
for the band, crawling forward to get a better look before walking onstage for
a duet - Broken, which she and Morgan wrote.
When Evanescence comes on, Lee is a woman obsessed. Her long black hair flies
everywhere as she jumps and pumps her fist in the air to punch the meaning of
her lyrics home. Her haunting wail and strong voice echo in the arena after
she's finished singing.
"When you get up there . . . you just draw a blank and zone out and become
Evanescence," she said.
Her magic is an ability to draw her fans into the music. A piano rises from the
stage and the crowd quiets as she sits and plays a piece she wrote herself. The
audience of teenagers and 20-somethings slowly begins to go wild.
"I never saw myself as a role model. It's a word I hear a lot now," she said.
"What am I going to say? I'm a good role model? I make tons of mistakes. It's
funny. You always have a vision for your music and you think, 'Who's going to
like it?' And 14-year-old girls are never what I had in mind. But I think
that's awesome."
Having a woman heading up the band has given Evanescence a unique sound, but it
didn't come easily. Rock radio wouldn't play the band at first.
"Program directors and DJs would hear the track and just turn it off," Lee
said. "(They would say) What are you doing with a chick on a piano? Go take
this somewhere else."
Eventually a few stations relented and fans loved the music.
"I like to think that it's because I'm coming from a place where a lot of
people are," she said. "Everybody feels the same feelings all around the world.
Everyone has the same biological makeup. I think it's cool for people to hear
somebody talking about something they've been through and understand. I hope
people like our music because it's real music, a real experience."
Her inspiration comes from trying to understand tragedy, Lee says, and learning
how to deal with it. She moved around a lot when she was young and says she
didn't fit in when she came to Arkansas at age 13.
"I think there's a lot of closed-mindedness here in the south," she said.
"There's a certain set of views that a big majority of the people here have and
if you don't follow their views exactly then you're an outcast. I remember a
lot of times feeling like an outcast."
Lee calls Los Angeles home now, where she says she paints and designs her own
clothes, but don't expect an Amy Lee clothing line.
"I've always been like an artist, like a painter,
I-sew-my-own-skirt-because-I-couldn't-find-what-I-was-looking-for kind of
person," she said. "I don't consider myself like a fashion designer. I do have
a little dream that someday maybe I could open a store in Seattle. But I'd only
make one of each thing. I just don't like repeating myself."
