Earlier this month, Jermaine Dupri demonstrated he's a true showman by
bringing out Mariah Carey'>Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson during his set at the
Summer Jam radio festival in New Jersey. Now, Dupri is thinking about
how to pull the ultimate trump card and get the two legends on the same
song.
In April, Carey hinted that she was very open to the collaboration (see
"Mariah Down To Work With Janet; Eve's Loss Is Busta's Gain"). "He
never talked to me about that, but if Jermaine has a concept, we should
go and write something," she told MTV Radio. "I love Janet. I've been a
big fan of Janet since 'Con-tro-ol!' "
On Friday, JD said he is, in fact, developing an idea for Carey and his
longtime girlfriend to do it up right on a song.
"It's gonna happen on this record," he said about the collaboration.
"Please believe that. I got a mean idea, so look for it. We definitely
gonna do a repackage on [Janet's 20 Years Old] once it comes out.
Hopefully it's successful and people buy into it, then I'm going back
in the studio.
What happened was, when I was working with Janet, I got into the zone.
This was my first time ever working with her. When I get into my zone
with artists, I just want to create and create and create. That's what
happened with me and Mariah [on The Emancipation of Mimi]. We don't run
outta ideas; we keep coming up with sh--. The closer I get to that idea
[for Janet and Mariah], the more I know where it should be at. It's
feeling like it's gonna happen."
Dupri also said the Janet and Mariah record - if he pulls it off -
could appear on the initial run of 20 Years Old.
"It depends on how quick my mind moves," he said. "We're mixing records
for [20 Years Old]. We're not done yet. When I did Usher's My Way
album, the last record I created was 'You Make Me Wanna ... .' I'm
thinking I might go back in, and I might tamper with it. ... We gotta
try to figure it out."
JD hopes to have the Janet and Mariah duet mapped out and recorded
before Carey goes on tour this summer. Dupri also said he's accepted
Mariah's invite to go out on the road with her. He won't be at every
single date, but he promises to pop up here and there and support his
homie.
"I'mma go to the hot spots," he said of the tour. "She's going to Miami
first. I'm definitely gonna be at that show. I'm definitely gonna be in
New York, in Atlanta. That's my partner. Whatever she needs me to do,
I'm there."
When he's not onstage, Jermaine already has a full plate of production
scheduled for the rest of the year. He's working on a slew of his So So
Def artists, including Johnta Austin, Manish Man, T. Waters and Young
Capone. Bow Wow's next album is on Dupri's to-do list, as are records
from 3LW, JoJo, Ludacris, Young Jeezy, Frankie J, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony,
Nelly, Usher ("We gonna start on his record at the end of the year")
and Mariah Carey'>Mariah Carey once she gets off tour.
Janet's JD-produced "Call on Me," is the first single from the
September 26 release 20 Years Old, and made its official debut Tuesday
(June 20).
"It's a duet between her and Nelly," Dupri said. "It's the jump-off.
It's really just a record about when you need a friend, somebody you
need to talk to, just call on a person. It's a friend record. It ain't
really a boyfriend/girlfriend record. The way Nelly and Janet is
talking is more girlfriend/boyfriend, but it really goes out to
friends."
Nelly being a close friend of JD made him a perfect candidate to rap on
the song. Well, that and the fact that Nelly and Dupri have a
super-smash under their belts already.
"Nelly, I try to do what I do with my friends," Dupri explained. "Me
and him had just come off the success of 'Grillz' at the time I made
this record. He was the person on my mind. "Especially since Janet only
made records, not to disrespect Q-Tip or Heavy D, but as far as popular
rappers in this day and time, Busta Rhymes was the only one. We was
trying to go to the radio and not do the typical R&B featured record. I
was trying to be more creative and find somebody who can do melody as
well as rap on the record. Nelly don't really rap on this song, he's
singing. He has that different style. That's kind of what the record
is. We see that enough: R&B with a rapper feature. That's why I call
this a duet as opposed to a feature."
With new singer/rapper collaborations in abundance, like Beyonc=E9 and
Jay-Z's "Deja Vu" and Ciara and Chamillionaire's "Get Up," JD said he
really wanted Janet and Nelly to have their own lane.
"I never really pay attention to anybody else's record when I'm doing
what I'm doing," he said. "I was just trying to give her the look she
hasn't had in a minute. That would be both an incredible look on TV as
well as a star moment, as well as a big record on radio. That's all the
elements I was putting into making this record. We don't just have a
record that's just a Nelly and Janet record. I believe this record is
gonna be one of the biggest records on radio this year. Outside of who
it is, it's a well-put-together song."=20

Not the same thing... a breast popping out is a lot easier to happen by

NEW YORK - Janet Jackson and James DeBarge, who were briefly
married in 1984, had a daughter together, DeBarge's brother Young
DeBarge has claimed on a radio program.
Young DeBarge said the child, named Renee and now 18, has been living
with Rebbie Jackson, Janet's oldest sister. His comments lent support
to reports that have circulated for years claiming Janet has a "secret"
daughter.
Jackson's publicist didn't immediately return a call from The
Associated Press on Monday. The singer and James DeBarge were married
for less than three months when she was just 18. The marriage was
annulled a year later.
"James and the Jackson family kept everything real close, real tight,"
Young DeBarge said Friday on New York radio station WQHT, known as Hot
97. "They weren't very revealing about what the relationship was
about."
"No one really knew how it was working out until things kind of
surfaced," he said.
He added, "There's no telling what (Janet Jackson) is telling her."
DeBarge said Renee "is a wonderful singer."
Jackson, 39, secretly married Rene Elizondo Jr. in 1991. They separated
in 1999. She is now dating Jermaine Dupri.
Young DeBarge, 28, said he has recently finished an album.

appearance on a Top Of The Pops, according to presenter Fearne Cotton.
Cotton, 22, was "star-struck" to meet Jackson, 39, last year (04) when
the American star performed on the BBC show.

NEW YORK - The stars in Jermaine Dupri's universe couldn't look more
spectacular these days. The producer's handiwork on Mariah Carey's
latest album, including the Dupri-produced smash "We Belong Together,"
has played a key role in her stunning comeback. Dupri was also
responsible for three of Usher's biggest hits last year, helping the
R&B crooner make the leap to superstardom with the album "Confessions."
Recently, he was given the task to revamp Virgin Records' meager
urban-music department into a black music powerhouse. And then there's
his personal life - he's got Janet Jackson as a girlfriend,
strutting around in a revealing stripper's getup in his latest video,
"Gotta Getcha."
Yet despite all these accomplishments - or maybe because of them -
the sometime rapper feels underappreciated.
"The thing I'm going through is probably like the same thing that
Little Richard and all these other artists go through, that I hear
about them, saying, `Oh damn, you ain't gonna give me nothing till I
die,'" Dupri said with resignation. "I feel like I'm one of those type
of great people that just going to have to wait till it's all over with
for people to really sit around and talk about it."
While comparisons to the groundbreaking legend may be exaggerated, it's
true that Dupri's decade-plus career as a hitmaker hasn't garnered as
much fanfare as other producing sensations.
Unlike Pharrell from the production duo The Neptunes, Dupri doesn't
have a sneaker deal or a producer of the year Grammy; even Lil Jon got
more attention for producing Usher's "Yeah!" than Dupri garnered for
all the rest of Usher's smashes last year.
"A lot more people get recognition for one or two songs, where I got to
do millions of records," the diminutive star griped during a recent
lunch at a posh restaurant in Manhattan (where he divided his attention
among a cell phone, a Blackberry and a sidekick).
Particularly disappointing for Dupri this year was Usher's loss to icon
Ray Charles for best album. Charles' posthumous "Genius Loves Company"
swept the Grammys while Usher's "Confessions," the year's
biggest-selling album, failed to win awards in major categories.
"I don't mind losing to Ray Charles, but at the same time, the way I
look at things is, me and Usher might not make another better album
than this. And if we don't, we missed our opportunity," he said.
"To me, people look at me like, `You'll do it again, don't worry about
this time.' No, I want it now, everything now," he said with a wry
smile.
While Dupri may not have everything, he seems pretty close. He recently
opened a restaurant in his hometown of Atlanta, is negotiating to open
a hotel, and is working on book, which he describes as a guide for kids
trying to get into the business.
And despite his belief that he's been denied accolades or attention,
Dupri's stock in the music industry has only increased - which is why
Virgin Chairman Matt Serletic wooed Dupri to the label.
"It's very rare that you have a guy who's artistic and able to make
great records, who at the same time understands the business and has a
drive to win," Serletic said. "I think he really has helped make us
more competitive, from the artist roster to the demeanor of the staff,
all the way through."
A taste of what Dupri has in store for Virgin's future was revealed
this week with the release of the hip-hop compilation disc "Young, Fly
& Flashy, Vol. 1." It features not only Dupri but other artists soon to
be rolled out on the Virgin label and his imprint, So So Def.
"I feel like I've done my first layer," said Dupri. "The next layer is
to release records and make sure that the records aren't just duds when
they come out and they do what they gotta do, and that I bring some
stars in the building."
One superstar already in the building has been struggling -
girlfriend Janet Jackson. Her last album, "Damita Jo," released after
her Super Bowl fiasco, was a commercial and critical disappointment.
During the scandal that surrounded the incident, Dupri stood by his
woman - he quit the Recording Academy when those in charge of the
Grammy telecast wanted to keep her off the show that year, and remains
irked at the suggestion that Jackson's flash was planned: "What really
made me mad about it was people, or the press, thought that Janet
actually needed a boost in her career."
Yet Dupri is candid about why he feels "Damita Jo" flopped: "The last
record was a poor choice of music ... they just put the record out on
the strength of who it was. I think the whole album was not done in the
right manner."
Dupri believes Jackson still has the potential to deliver another
blockbuster album - even though at 39 she's competing against younger
artists.
"People wanna always count older artists out, just because. Mariah
Carey for an example ... (Janet) has sold so many more records than
every other (new) artist. ... That's the way I look at it."
