Sting campaigns for cannabis
19/12/2005 - 14:40:09
Rocker Sting is campaigning to stop British prime minister Tony Blair from
upgrading the legal categorisation of cannabis from a class C to class B
drug.
The Roxanne hitmaker fears the political leader is planning a high-profile
policy u-turn which will see him vow to tackle drug use head-on and
reclassify the drug, despite officially downgrading it from class B to its
current status in January.
Sting, 54, has added his signature to a letter for Blair alongside those of
actress Jean Simmons and former Spandau Ballet star Gary Kemp, insisting the
reclassification has been a success, saving up to 200,000 hours of police
time.
The letter reads: "Such a move would simply add to public confusion,
inconsistency and the waste of police resources, without delivering any
health or social benefits."

Wed Jun 1, 4:35 AM ET
LONDON (Reuters) - Star Wars star Ewan McGregor returns to the London
stage on Wednesday for the first time in six years to play inveterate
gambler Sky Masterson in a revival of the classic 1950s musical "Guys
and Dolls."
But he is refusing in his interpretation to make any comparisons with
Marlon Brando, who immortalised the role in the 1955 film alongside
Frank Sinatra and Jean Simmons.
"I can assure you that I don't start thinking 'That's a bit like
Brando. I mustn't do that.' You just try to find the character and see
how it fits in your shoes," he said before launching into the show.
It is a demanding role and McGregor has been taking special care of his
voice and lost almost 13 kilos (28 pounds) in perfecting the musical's
exuberant dance routines.
"I can eat like a horse but they have to keep taking the suits in. It's
great," he said.
McGregor, whose singing voice won critical acclaim alongside Nicole
Kidman in the movie musical "Moulin Rouge," has been taking special
care of his voice in the lead-up to first night.
"You become incredibly aware of not damaging your vocal chords. You
don't go to places that are too noisy, you don't go to smoky
restaurants," he said.
McGregor, who stars in the last "Star Wars" movie as Jedi Knight
Obi-Wan Kenobi, has signed up for six months in "Guys and Dolls,"
appearing eight times a week on stage for a fraction of what he would
earn in a Hollywood blockbuster.
The Scottish actor, who shot to fame in the drug cult classic
"Trainspotting," has no complaints.
Referring to his first fortnight of rehearsals, he told reporters:
"These two weeks have been more fulfilling than any of my movies which
can be very draining. I needed my fix."
McGregor last appeared on the London stage in 1999 in "Little Malcolm
and his Struggle against the Eunuchs."
In the musical that has been highly praised in preview run-throughs,
McGregor stars alongside Jane Krakowski, best known for her TV role in
Ally McBeal, and British actor Douglas Hodge.
"My experience of Little Malcolm was being part of an incredible
theater company and cast. As opposed to coming back to the theater as a
movie actor doing Hamlet or a Scottish king, I was much more interested
in being part of a company," he said.

Vin wants our Nic
By Peter Mitchell

From: AAP
Keen ... Vin Diesel wants Nicole Kidman to star in Guys and Dolls
HOLLYWOOD action star Vin Diesel hasn't giving up on coaxing Nicole Kidman
into starring with him in a remake of the musical, Guys and Dolls.
Diesel thinks the project is a winner, despite it being a departure from his
usual action roles in XXX, The Fast and the Furious and Pitch Black.
"I still want to do that musical," Diesel said in Los Angeles.
"The trick would be, do you do Guys and Dolls? Or do you do a modern
version?"
The former Manhattan nightclub bouncer doesn't want to be typecast as
Hollywood's boofhead action man.
In his latest film, the family comedy The Pacifier, Diesel puts down his
guns and sheds his tattoos to play a babysitter.
The film, currently playing in Australian cinemas, was a huge hit in the US,
debuting in early March at number one with a $US30.5 million ($A39.61
million) opening weekend haul and has gone on to make $US86 million
($A111.67 million).
Diesel plays Navy SEAL Shane Wolfe, who is assigned to protect a scientist's
children, but he spends more time changing nappies than fighting baddies.
The role gives audiences a taste of his singing voice and dancing ability,
as Wolfe has to sing and act out the words of a lullaby to one of the kids.
On the back of the comedy's box office success, Diesel is keen to finally
bring his dream of Guys and Dolls to the big screen.
Guys and Dolls has been a hit on Broadway for decades and was made into a
movie in 1955, starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons and Frank Sinatra.
Kidman is still high on Diesel's list to take a key role and he wouldn't
mind British pop star Robbie Williams joining the cast.
Diesel confidently predicts Kidman, Williams and the elite of both Hollywood
and the music industry will be clamouring for a role once the project gets
the green light.
"I think once it gets going, everyone will be up for it," Diesel said.
Diesel and Kidman sent tabloids around the world into a frenzy in 2002 when
they were spotted giggling in a booth at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
It was later revealed they were there to discuss the Guys and Dolls remake,
killing off romance rumours.
Meanwhile, Diesel is basking in the success of The Pacifier.
It has opened his eyes to fatherhood and the Hollywood tough guy, linked to
various swimsuit and runway models over the years, admits he wouldn't mind
having a baby of his own soon.
"I would love a child," Diesel said.
"I just have to find the right woman to have one. "I have a real soft spot
for kids and The Pacifier really brought that out of me."
Diesel's move into family comedies has been compared to Arnold
Schwarzenegger's decision in 1990 to take on the child-friendly role in
Kindergarten Cop.
Diesel said his latest movie has been welcomed by his nieces and nephews who
have been too young to watch his action films.
"They kept on saying to me 'Uncle Vin, Uncle Vin. When are we going to see
one of your films?'
"The Pacifier is the first film I have been able to do that kids can see."
From Sunny Oz, Rick :)
Proud Keeper of the talented & beautiful Halle Berry.
