(May 31, 2:20PM ET) -- Jessica Simpson has offered Nick Lachey what is
an "insulting" property settlement offer, banking on the assumption
that Lachey does not want to press the matter in court.
Multiple sources connected with the former couple tell TMZ that Simpson
has offered Lachey less than $1.5 million to settle the division of
property. Under California law, Lachey would be entitled to half of
what the couple earned during their marriage. The Associated Press
reports that in 2004 alone, Simpson raked in $30 million.
We're told that Simpson's reps believe that Lachey will fold because he
does not want to make it appear that he is after her money. They also
know that Lachey is still in love with his estranged wife and believe
he does not have the stomach to square off with her in court.
Indeed, sources have confirmed to TMZ that Joe Simpson, Jessica's dad,
has called Nick, urging him to take the settlement so the two can "end
as friends." And other friends and reps of Jessica have contacted Nick,
trying to pressure him into a settlement.
Sources say Lachey "absolutely will not ask for spousal support," even
though legally he has a right to press that claim. He will not,
however, accept a paltry settlement that in no way approaches what he
would be legally entitled to under the law.
In 2004 Jessica said, "If anything were to happen to me and Nick, I've
had a great life with him and he would deserve half of everything I
have." It appears she has had a radical change of heart.

Nick Lachey is now offering a more thorough peek inside his former
marriage to Jessica Simpson than viewers were allowed to see on their
Newlyweds reality series.
"Jessica and I began playing these parts even when we were by
ourselves," he says of their roles. "It became a really blurred line.
There was a question about what truly was our reality."
Lachey, 32, makes the comments to Rolling Stone in a new interview.
Among the singer's more startling revelations: "I'll tell you how I
knew my marriage was over: I was told."
He tells the magazine he was "blindsided" when his then-wife told him
after dinner last November: "I think I want a divorce."
"I basically said, 'Please, let's sleep on it.' But when we woke up the
next day, Wednesday, she was still sure," he says.
As for lingering doubts about his three-year-marriage, Lachey admits:
"I don't know if there were other men. But if she did cheat, it was the
result of something bigger, not the reason we didn't work. ...
Sometimes I think it would be easier if I had just walked in the house
and found her in bed with a guy. That would be clear-cut. End of story.
I wouldn't have to deal with the uncertainty of adultery."
Lachey also lifts the veil on his feelings about ex-father-in-law (and
Jessica's manager) Joe Simpson. "I don't pretend to understand Joe," he
says. "I don't know if he ever liked me. To this day I couldn't say. It
was painful. Do I think Joe drove a rift between us? No. Was he an
influence in our marriage? Absolutely."
In related news, the music publication also says that singer-songwriter
Adam Green has a big new hit in Germany called "Jessica," described as
an unflattering ditty about Nick's ex. Its lyrics reportedly mention
her "fraudulent smile" and "injections of cortisone."

As far as some of her business associates are concerned, Jessica
Simpson is not exactly the employee of the month.
The "In This Skin" singer has been sued for $100 million by an apparel
company that claims she failed to promote their product as promised,
the Smoking Gun Website reports.
According to the complaint, filed in New York State Supreme Court by
the Tarrant Apparel Group, Simpson inked a multimillion-dollar
three-year licensing deal in December 2004 to launch a line of
low-priced jeans and clothing.
Under the terms of the agreement, Simpson was supposed to be "actively
involved" in promoting the garb, including wearing items from the line
at "public events, shows and appearances" whenever "reasonably
practicable."
However, it seems Simpson attended precious few events she deemed
suitable for trotting out the affordable duds, leading the company to
gripe that she "simply failed to provide the promised support."
The company contends the Dukes of Hazzard star even refused to be
photographed wearing items from the JS by Jessica Simpson and Princy
collections, and that when asked by the press to name her favorite
brand of jeans at an event last year, she replied "True Religion,"
rather than "Princy."
Princy jeans, which are named after the nickname given to Simpson by
her father, retail for around $60, while True Religion jeans can set
the denim connoisseur back upwards of $350.
Tarrant claims Simpson's unwillingness to back the line crippled its
marketing plan and caused it to lose valuable contracts with retailers.
According to its court documents, the company has already shelled out
$2.2 million in licensing fees to the singer-actress and has agreed to
another $6 million in guaranteed payments.
The ex-Newlyweds star, who's already balancing a jam-packed schedule,
had not yet responded to the suit as of Friday.
In addition to her ongoing divorce proceedings from Nick Lachey,
Simpson is currently in production on the comedy Employee of the Month
opposite Dane Cook and Dax Shepard, and recently signed on to star in
Major Movie Star, about an actress who hits rock bottom and enlists in
the Marines. She is also rumored to have landed a role in the
big-screen adaptation of Baywatch.
Meanwhile, she has also been in the studio working on her upcoming
album And The Band Played On, which is expected to be released via her
new label, Epic Records, sometime this year.
As if that weren't enough to keep a soon-to-be single girl occupied,
Simpson has reportedly been channeling her inner Angelina Jolie by
looking into adopting a baby sometime in the future, as well as
possibly funding her own orphanage, her rep confirmed last month.

The new producers must mean a sexy new look. I remember Jessica making a big
deal about how she wasn't going to dance in her videos, and wanted to be
taken seriously as a singer. I suspect we will see her dressing like Mariah
or Xtina in the near future.

Singer Nick Lachey recorded his confessional first single What's Left Of Me
on the same day Jessica Simpson told him their marriage was over.
Lachey was planning on spending last year's Thanksgiving holiday with his
wife in Texas, until he received a phone call from her telling him she was
ending their relationship.
He says the song was recorded: "The day before Thanksgiving, which was
basically the day that Jessica told me she wanted to get a divorce."
The former 98 Degrees star has put his feelings about the split into his new

However, the pair are said to have started talking together again, rather
than through their lawyers - and Simpson is now having second thoughts about
their separation, and is holding on to the idea of giving their marriage a
second chance.
According to Life & Style Magazine she told a friend, "We were happy. We did
one thing after another to get even with each other, but there really was
nothing we couldn't have worked out, but I just didn't try.
"I don't know what I'll do if I see him. It's going to be rough. I just keep
wishing it was easy between us again. I wish none of this bad stuff had
happened."

Simpson insists she is not among the celebrities who are keen to attack the
US President - and she's still hoping the pair can reschedule their meeting.
Simpson was set to meet the leader Friday, during the pop star's visit to
Capitol Hill in Washington DC, where she'll address congressmen about
charity organization Operation Smile. She says, "I'm just so excited because
the President asked for a special meeting. We're going to sit down face to
face and we're going to talk about children. I want to set up this whole
orphanage and adoption organization. I just really want to bring awareness
to interracial adoption." The pop star, who performed at Bush's inauguration
and has been to The White House four times, admits she's a big fan of Bush:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Concerned about politicizing her favorite
charity, singer-actress Jessica Simpson on Wednesday turned down a
invitation to meet with U.S. President George W. Bush, a snub that
left Republicans dismayed.
The apparent final word that Simpson would be a no-show at a major
Republican fund-raiser with Bush and congressional leaders on Thursday
night came after a day of conflicting reports from her camp and
organizers of the event.
The blond star of the film "The Dukes of Hazzard" still plans to visit
Washington on Thursday to lobby members of Congress on behalf of
Operation Smile, a non-profit venture offering free plastic surgery for
disadvantaged children overseas with facial deformities.
People close to Simpson said she declined a request to appear that same
evening at the gala fund-raiser of the National Republican
Congressional Committee -- even after she was offered some private face
time with Bush -- because Operation Smile is a non-partisan group.
"It just feels wrong," one Simpson insider told Reuters on Wednesday,
adding that the actress keeps her political views private. "She would
love to meet the president and talk about Operation Smile ... but she
can't do it at a fund-raiser for the Republican Party."
NRCC spokesman Carl Forti said he was surprised at Simpson's position.
"It's never been a problem for Bono," he said, referring to the U2 rock
star who has met regularly with political leaders of all stripes to
promote various causes, including Third World debt relief. "I find it
hard to believe she would pass up an opportunity to lobby the president
on behalf of Operation Smile."
Although Simpson's publicists insisted she never had planned to attend
the fund-raiser, Forti said the actress initially accepted the NRCC
invitation when it was extended on Tuesday night, only to change her
mind the next evening.
Forti said the Republican group had even arranged for Simpson to dine
at one of the head tables with U.S. House of Representatives Majority
Leader John Boehner, an Ohio Republican. The NRCC hopes the
$2,500-per-plate dinner event will raise $7.5 million for Republican
candidates in the congressional midterm elections in November.
Simpson, 25, a Texas native who started out singing in her church
choir, became a star on the Christian music circuit as a teenager and
crossed over to the pop mainstream with her major-label debut album
"Sweet Kisses" in 1999.
She became an overnight MTV sensation in 2003 as co-star of a reality
show chronicling her first year of wedlock with fellow pop vocalist
Nick Lachey, but she filed for divorce in December after three stormy
years of marriage. Simpson is currently featured wearing cowboy boots
and hot pants in a TV pizza ad.
