Super heart and super, er, thighs
By Glenn Whipp
May 6, 2006
High flyer ... Brandon Routh's Superman.
For the Man of Steel, there have been only two things deadlier than
kryptonite - Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. But even
those two 1980s stinkers couldn't kill off America's most beloved superhero.
Sure, the movies stopped, but Superman kept flying on TV with the
long-running series Lois and Clark and Smallville. Pop artists spanning the
spectrum from the Flaming Lips to Eminem and Sufjan Stevens have sung about
him. Basketball star Shaquille O'Neal has the logo tattooed on his arm.
"He has endured for 70 years through all kinds of exposure and politics,
good representations and bad," says Bryan Singer, director of the latest
instalment, Superman Returns. "He's the ultimate immigrant, and I think
that's why he connects to American culture. He came from a foreign land but
was raised in the heartland of America with the ideals and values that
Americans aspire to. And he flies. Don't underestimate the flying thing."
Warner Bros has never underestimated that - or the value of the Superman
franchise. Another movie has been in the works since Dubya's daddy was in
the White House. One package had Nicolas Cage playing Superman. Later,
Oliver Stone was attached for a minute or two. Then Wolfgang Petersen (Troy)
was going to make a movie pitting Superman against Batman. That fizzled,
too.
Singer came on board two years ago, immediately ditching a screenplay
written by J.J. Abrams (Alias) that would have rehashed the Man of Steel's
origins. Instead, Superman Returns takes up as he returns to Earth after a
mysterious absence of several years.
"It's about Superman finding his place in the universe," says Brandon Routh,
the 26-year-old unknown cast in the lead role. "He didn't say goodbye and
now Lois has moved on. She is engaged. She has a kid. So where does Superman
go from there?"
Singer agrees: "When you look at the huge history of Superman, for all the
stories of action and Lex Luthor, the heart of thing is the relationship
between Superman and Lois Lane. So for Superman, what would be something
that would be just as disabling as kryptonite? What would happen if the love
of his life moved on?"
But in the lead-up to the film's opening next month, more focus has been on
the budget and the Man of Steel's tights than on his broken heart. Singer
says the film is coming in at cost, rumoured to be $US180million
($250million).
And as for the tight-fitting costume? "We did discuss it in depth before
starting," he says. "He is a super man, so you have to take that into
consideration."
Singer doesn't remember the same sort of attention being placed on
Christopher Reeve's privates when Superman: The Movie came out in 1978. But
then, he was only 13.
Superman Returns opens on June 29.

Stone Promises Sensitivity in 9/11 Film
Director Oliver Stone promises his forthcoming film about the September 11
terrorist attacks will be respectful to victims of the atrocities. The
Platoon movie-maker is confident the Nicolas Cage starring movie will not
offend survivors because he is not attempting to glamorize the incident
which claimed thousands of lives. Instead, he will focus on the accurate
re-telling of just one story from the fateful day - the two policemen who
were rescued from the rubble of the Twin Towers 22 hours after they
collapsed. Co-producer Michael Shamberg says, "We're not doing the 'Towering
Inferno-Titanic' version. We're not doing everyone's story that day. We're
trusted with the accuracy of the particular story that we're telling." Both
Stone and Shamberg have consulted New York residents and families of the
victims to ensure the project is handled sensitively. Most of the film's
scenes will be shot out in Los Angeles, and the movie will incorporate
television footage of actual events.

Stone shoots 9/11 film in New York
03/11/2005 - 08:30:43
Director Oliver Stone has begun shooting one of the first Hollywood films
about the September 11 2001 attacks in New York - without recreating the
large-scale devastation all too familiar to people who lived through the
outrage.
After months of meetings with residents and family groups, producers of the
untitled movie have promised to tread carefully on sensitive ground.
Most of the major action portraying the World Trade Centre collapse will be
shot on a Los Angeles sound stage. And although news footage of the towers
themselves will be shown during the film, it will play on television screens
in the background.
"We're not doing the 'Towering Inferno-Titanic' version," said Michael
Shamberg, who is producing the Paramount film with his partner, Stacey Sher.
Stone started shooting scenes in New York last month for his untitled film,
starring Nicolas Cage as one of two policemen who survived the towers'
collapse and were rescued from the trade centre ruins after 22 hours.
After holding dozens of meetings, producers decided to limit their filming
in the city, shooting the bulk of the action in Los Angeles and staying away
from the 16-acre trade centre site.
Family members who met the producers said they still were not sure whether
Hollywood would treat September 11 with proper respect.
"Are there going to be love scenes in it? How do you portray it correctly?"
said Lee Ielpi, who lost his firefighter son. "It has to be done with some
reverence."
Others said they were concerned about how Stone - whose more controversial
films include JFK, which offered conspiracy theories about the Kennedy
assassination - might interpret the attacks in the film.
In October 2001, Stone was quoted as referring to the attacks as a "revolt"
against multinational corporations. But in July, Stone called the untitled
project "a work of collective passion, a serious meditation on what
happened, and carries within a compassion that heals".
"It's an exploration of heroism in our country - but it's international at
the same time in its humanity," he said.
Charles Wolf, who lost his wife on September 11, has met producers and asked
to see a copy of Andrea Berloff's . He said he appreciated the
outreach and sensitivity of the filmmakers, but wanted to make sure that the
day's events, including details as precise as the officers' view of the lift
from the rubble, were represented accurately.
"I think they need to be factual. It's too close in people's minds," Wolf
said. "'Based on a true story' should not happen here."
Because Berloff's focuses entirely on police officers John McLoughlin
and William Jimeno's experience on September 11, the film will not interpret
the politics or meaning of September 11, the producers say. Stone has taken
great care to portray the event as it happened, and has worked to make sure
that Cage, Michael Pena and the other actors playing officers used authentic
equipment.
"We're not doing everyone's story that day," said Shamberg. "We're trusted
with the accuracy of the particular story that we're telling."
The about McLoughlin and Jimeno also focuses on their families. The
filmmakers plan to show news footage of the towers on TV screens watched by
actors.
The Stone film may not be the first studio film about September 11 to be
released. Flight 93, a Universal Studios film about the hijacked plane that
left Newark, New Jersey, and crashed into a Pennsylvania field, is scheduled
for an April release.
Stone's film will be shooting in New York through mid-November and is
tentatively scheduled to open on August 11, one month before the attacks'
fifth anniversary.
Other September 11 films are in development, including an adaptation of the
book, 102 Minutes and a TV mini-series based on the findings of the
September 11 commission.
Paramount hired Jennifer Brown, a former vice president for community develo
pment at the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, in charge of
rebuilding the trade centre site, to act as a liaison with the community.
Brown set up more than a dozen meetings with business, community, family and
survivor groups, along with police and fire officials.
Brown said that once people understood that the story was only about the

To be honest, even if Nic Cage was a bus driver, this is the kind of
name he'd give his kid. He's an endearing whack job, but a whack job
none-the-less.

Cage Chose Kal-El for "Magical Ring"
Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage decided to call his baby son Kal-El because he
believes the name has a "magical ring" to it. Cage, 41, and his 21-year-old
wife Alice welcomed the arrival of their first child together earlier this
month, and stunned fans when they announced the baby's unusual name, which
was originally given to fictional superhero Superman at birth. The Leaving
Las Vegas star says, "Alice and I wanted to have a name that was exotic and
American and which stood for something good, because our son is exotic and
he's American and we both think he's good. But having said that, I always
liked the sound of the name. It has kind of a magical ring to it:
Abracadabra Kal-El Shazam!"
