Could Keri Russell be the latest starlet to sign up for an E-meter?
Radarlonline reports that the Felicity alumna, who recently won the
coveted role of starring opposite Tom Cruise in M:I3, has been spotted
buying books on Scientology, the controversial religion founded by
Science Fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, and has even visited the sect's
L.A. Celebrity Center.
Sources told the magazine that Russell, who was once a member of the
Church of Latter Day Saints, has "suddenly become very interested" in
co-star Tom Cruise's other "mission," spreading the word on
Scientology. Russell's publicist said she is "on hiatus" while her
client is filming in Rome and could not comment on the item.
If Russell falls under Scientolgy's spell, it will be due in large part
to Cruise himself, as the religion's assist tents are available on all
movie sets where he works. But the issue of the assist tents has two
sides. "Paramount is terrified that it will be deluged with lawsuits
from extras, caterers, and actors who will say that they were coerced
into Scientology on the set," an insider told Radaronline. "Tom is not
passive about having those tents set up. On the War of the Worlds set,
he directed people to them and often asked them to talk out their
issues in the Scientology tent."
But Paramount reps as well as Cruise's publicist and sister, Lee Anne
De Vette, say that there is no problem at all with Cruise or the
Scientology volunteers.
"Tom's been working with the studio for years and they have a great
relationship. There's no friction. That's a crock of (expletive)," said
De Vette. "Tom received a lot of letters from people who had assists
thanking him, and there are a lot of people who didn't have them, too.
If you don't want them, don't have them! It's like the coffee he brings
onset. If you don't want coffee, don't have the coffee!"

it, however, THEN there's a problem.
I don't know the rate of professional actors/actresses that dabble in
Scientology and don't become adherents of the cult. Certainly, there is
Penelope Cruz, whose PR person came out with a fuddy-duddy press
release following the break-up of her relationship with Cruz that
claimed Cruz was not a Scientologist, but she "enjoyed and appreciated"
the courses and counseling she had received from Scientology.
Cruz was only involved in Scientology during the period she was dating
(and rumored to be engaged) to Tom Cruise - you have to wonder if her
refusing to join & talk about the cult like Katie Holmes has been doing
was the reason Cruise dumped her.....
It should be noted that Keri Russell has been dating JJ Abrams for some
time now...he is directing "MI:3" and answers directly to Cruise. Now
word is he, too, is being "directed" to visit the Scientology center
and buy books.

Cruise News, Keri Russell'>Keri Russell Edition
Is Keri Russell'>Keri Russell the latest ingenue to fall under Scientology's spell?
Ever since Russell scored her plum supporting role in Mission
Impossible III, we hear, the Felicity alumna has "suddenly become
very interested" in co-star Tom Cruise's much-mocked religion-and
is excited to learn more from the master.
She's even been spotted buying books on Scientology and visiting the
sect's L.A. Celebrity Center, sources say. Russell's publicist said
she is "on hiatus" while her client is filming and could not
comment, but it sounds as if the actress may be one of Cruise's few
fans in the production.
Though Paramount decided to proceed with the spy sequel-an assistant
in co-producer Paula Wagner's office said filming starts in Italy on
July 18-Cruise's War of the Worlds publicity meltdown made the
studio wary of giving their proselytizing star too much leeway.
"Paramount is terrified that it will be deluged with lawsuits from
extras, caterers, and actors who will say that they were coerced into
Scientology on the set," an insider tells us. "Tom is not passive
about having those tents set up. On the War of the Worlds set, he
directed people to them and often asked them to talk out their issues
in the Scientology tent."
But it's not only the studio-Cruise is feeling the friction, too.
"Tom is pissed that Paramount is going head to head with him over
these issues," says another studio insider. "He really feels he is
helping people and that Paramount is trying to prevent him from doing
that. But they just want their movie made-they don't want to be
involved in all this other crap."
Paramount spokeswoman Janise Madatian called reports of a rift between
Cruise and the studio "incorrect," saying, "There's no problem
between Paramount and Tom. We have a great relationship."
Cruise's publi-sis, Lee Anne De Vette, agreed. "Tom's been
working with the studio for years and they have a great relationship.
There's no friction. That's a crock of shit." As for her
brother's onset demands, De Vette said that during the shooting of
WOTW, Cruise didn't ask for the "assist" tents to be set
up-"they were already there" when he arrived. Furthermore, she
said that although Cruise invited Scientology volunteers onto the set
to man the tents, no one felt pressured to use them:
"Tom received a lot of letters from people who had assists thanking
him, and there are a lot of people who didn't have them, too. If you
don't want them, don't have them! It's like the coffee he brings
onset. If you don't want coffee, don't have the coffee!"
De Vette added that, in addition to coffee and Scientology volunteers,
another perk of working with Cruise is complementary foodstuffs from
Coldstone Creamery and In N' Out Burger. Asked whether these types of
amenities will be on the set of MI III, De Vette said "absolutely."
Mmmm...delicious!

LOS ANGELES - "Into the West," TNT's epic series, premieres Friday
night, and one of its many actors, Keri Russell, learned some of the
Cheyenne Indian language to play her part.
Russell, whose character lives for a time with the Indian tribe, says
she worked with Cheyenne advisers to learn some of the language,
"because you also have to understand even if you're not speaking, you
have to understand the scenes."
After all that study, however, she says she can't remember any of it.
"Oh, for the love of God, no. Literally, Hebrew's easier, much easier
than this. It was so hard, so hard."
Russell, 29, became a TV star as the title character in the series
"Felicity," which aired on WB from 1998-2002.
"Into the West," which also stars Tom Berenger, Beau Bridges, Josh
Brolin, Keith Carradine, Jessica Capshaw, Matthew Modine, and Skeet
Ulrich, spans 65 years of history in the Old West.
Friday night's first chapter, "Wheels to the Stars," airs at 8 p.m.
EDT, with encores Saturday and Sunday. New episodes will be shown every
weekend for six weeks.

Holmes Set for 'Mission: Impossible 3'?
Dating Tom Cruise is starting to pay off for Katie Holmes, if internet
reports are to be believed - she's set to steal a Mission: Impossible 3 role
from Lindsay Lohan. According to website Ananova.Com, Holmes has become the
hot favorite to replace Scarlett Johansson as Cruise's love interest in the
action movie sequel. Holmes and Lohan aren't the only girls in contention
for the two parts left vacant by Johansson and Carrie Anne Moss' departure
from the project - Keri Russell and Elisha Cuthbert are also reportedly in
the running.

Keri-over effect
By BRUCE KIRKLAND -- Toronto Sun
At the end of a four-year run on Felicity, the TV series that propelled her
to stardom, Keri Russell was burned-out, tormented by her workload and
disillusioned with celebrity.
Her mentor at Felicity, producer-creator J.J. Abrams, knew about his star's
flame-out, but still told her of the spark of an idea he had for a new
show -- starring Russell.
She now remembers saying: "Are you out of your f---ing mind?"
Abrams answered: "I know, I know, but it's such a good idea and you'd be
great." To which Russell replied: "J.J., write it down and keep it for
later."
Later may be never. "We talk about it all the time," Russell says in a Los
Angeles interview recently, trying not to look disgusted with the notion of
series television, "and I love working with him. But he knows I don't want
to do TV right now."
After Felicity, Russell was not sure she wanted to do anything, at least not
in showbiz. Single and restless, she left L.A. with her cats, moved to New
York with a suitcase of clothes, took the first apartment she scouted,
plunked a mattress down on the bare floor, broke open one of the boxes of
books she brought and started to read and rejuvenate.
After the year hanging out with her New York girlfriends ("they really saved
me"), casually dating guys ("kind of acted like a kid for a while") and
reading Joan Didion and J.D. Salinger, she filmed The Upside Of Anger in the
fall of 2003.
Typical of many off-beat indie dramas, although it has Kevin Costner and
Joan Allen on the marquee, Mike Binder's film is only now getting a
commercial release (it opens tomorrow). Russell credits the experience,
especially working with Allen, with helping her get back on track and
propelling her to get active again, including in a co-starring role on
Broadway in Neil LaBute's scathing play Fat Pig. Other new projects include
Steven Spielberg's forthcoming TV mini-series, Into The West, and Butterfly:
A Grimm Love Story, a feature film now in production.
"I was very fried," Russell says of her post-Felicity period. "That's why I
took a break, because I wasn't surviving. I just lost so much of my life. I
didn't have time to see friends. I'm not saying I was a bitch to anyone but
I was really shutting down on some level. I became really self-protective. I
needed to be able to show up for dinner or be able to sleep in past seven
o'clock or not worry about how long my hair was or not worry about going to
a photo shoot or not worry about saying the right thing in an interview.
"I didn't do anything. I just hid from this whole side of the coast
(Hollywood) and it just saved me, it really did."
In The Upside Of Anger, the California-born Russell plays one of Allen's
four daughters. The suburban family implodes after the man of the house
suddenly disappears.
Watching Allen in action was crucial for Russell, a former teenaged jazz and
ballet dancer whose first job in showbiz was as a member of the new Mickey
Mouse Club, with Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and
Ryan Gosling. Allen is an actor's actor, a life lesson for a young woman who
was struggling as badly as Russell was.
"For me, it was really important to see the quality of person she was,"
Russell says of Allen, whom Russell considers to be a wonderful "survivor"
in the Hollywood acting game.
"It was great for me to see Joan because she is so talented, but the
integrity of her person is very much intact. And I'm so glad she was my
first experience back, because -- boom! -- there is someone who is doing
fine, she's doing great."
In different circumstances with a different leading lady, the experience
might have soured, says Russell.
"You know, actresses are crazy. They're crazy, man! I don't care what anyone
says. You know, the ones who are great are great, like Mare Winningham (and
Joan Allen). But there are others who are nutsoes."
To keep from going nutso herself, Russell has a plan. No matter how tempting
the money, keep away from series TV and don't work all the time.
"Never say never but, in an ideal world, I love the idea of working on
something and then taking a breather and regrouping. So I would love to just
keep doing it at the pace I'm doing it. We'll see if it works."
From Sunny Oz, Rick :)

SCOTT Speedman is the first one to admit that his acting career is a
complete fluke. The English-born, Canadian-raised actor was supposed to be a
swim star, not a Hollywood hunk, and for that reason he says he often feels
a little like a fish out of water.
Best known to Australians as the troubled Ben Covington in the TV series
Felicity, Speedman was 17 and preparing to make his name at the 1992
Barcelona Olympics when fate dealt him a harsh hand.
"I had the national record for the 100m medley and was ready to do battle
with the Aussies and the Americans," he says.
"But just before the Olympics, I developed a nerve problem in my neck and
could hardly pull through the water.
"All of a sudden I went from training 11 times a week, for most of my life,
to doing nothing."
Having neglected his studies to focus on swimming, he began to think any
hope of a decent career "in anything" had been sunk.
But then a friend dared him to take a shot at a casting call in Toronto for
the part of Boy Wonder in 1995's Batman Forever.
So he did.
Speedman missed out on the part, which eventually went to Chris O'Donnell,
but two weeks later an impressed Warner Bros studio executive put him in
touch with a Hollywood agent. Almost immediately he was cast in an episode
of Kung Fu: The Legend Continues.
"The first three days, they didn't know I'd never acted before," Speedman
says. "The director kept saying: 'Hit your mark', I finally had to admit I
didn't know what that meant."
He then landed the role in Felicity, which became the surprise US hit of
1998 and in which he paired up for romance on and off-screen with leading
lady Keri Russell.
After Felicity ended he sought out "grittier parts" and moved to New York to
try his hand at theatre in a bid to hone his craft.
It all came together, Speedman says, in the past year with the release of
three movies - Underworld, My Life Without Me and Dark Blue. All are
low-budget films with very different roles for the actor but all three
outperformed expectations at the box office.
Speedman says he has had to fight for acceptance.
"You have to really fight for what you want, go out and find movies that
slip through the cracks," he says.
He no longer swims and finds it difficult to hear himself described as a sex
symbol.
"I'm just a bloke who likes a beer and sport," he says. "The only time I
like getting in water these days is if it's in a hot tub."

DAILY NEWS FEATURE WRITER
Beware of Scott Speedman's paws.
They helped the former "Felicity" pinup claw his way to the top of the box
office last week playing a werewolf in the action-horror film "Underworld." The
movie, about a centuries-old war between vampires and werewolves, pulled in $22
million in ticket sales.
His mitts also destroyed a stunt man's nose.
"It was my first day of training and I was doing a punch backward," says
Speedman, 28. "I guess I came around too fast, and he didn't get out of the
way.
"I shattered his nose. They didn't even tell me until the movie was almost
done.
"But what can you do, man? My punches were swift!"
Swift also describes his movie career.
Friday, Speedman appears in "My Life Without Me," a heart-wrenching drama
co-starring Sarah Polley. Speedman plays Polley's doting, working-class
husband, who is unaware that his wife is dying of cancer.
Best known as the troubled Ben Covington on "Felicity" - and for years the
real-life boyfriend of the show's star, Keri Russell - Speedman is defying the
unwritten rule that TV heartthrobs can't make it on the big screen. (See: Luke
Perry and James Van Der Beek.)
But first, he's making a break with his TV couple past.
He's no longer "attached" to Russell, he says - though he has done something
Russell did to great public outcry during the "Felicity" run and trimmed the
chin-length locks he wears in both of his new films.
It's not as if he's playing the life of a Hollywood hunk, despite behind a
red-carpet regular.
"Don't ask me why," he begs. "Please. I'm not staying away from [girls]. I
just, I don't know. I guess I am not in a dating frame of mind."
Maybe he's just tired. It's the day after the premiere for "Underworld," and
Speedman is beat.
"I am excited to talk about these films, which I really believe in, but I am
sick of hearing my own voice. I've just been talking about myself for the last
three weeks. I've definitely hit a wall."
Speedman says his expectations of Hollywood have fallen short.
"Any innocence I had about it as a kid is totally shattered," he says.
"Things like the red carpet don't make you feel special. All those guys
snapping pictures are just there to make a living, they don't care about you.
There's a lot to be underwhelmed about."
Raised in Toronto, Speedman spent 10 years training to be an Olympic swimmer
(he competed in the 1992 Olympic trials, but hung up his goggles at 18 after
after a neck injury).
"I was a bit robotic as a kid, because my life was very rigid with training,"
he says.
He now plays recreational basketball in regular and entertainment leagues. "My
body was just burned out, and I wanted to do other things."
Speedman's acting career started as a fluke.
A friend dared him to send an audition tape to a Canadian TV show asking for
the role of Robin in 1995's "Batman Forever," and though he didn't get the
part, he did land an agent. He dropped out of the University of Toronto after
one year to pursue his career.
"I was majoring in being a general idiot," he says. "I was barely hanging on to
three classes."
Though he gets about 10 s a month, Speedman hasn't chosen a new project
because, he says, "It's hard to find good ones."
He spent three months in New York this summer auditioning for plays, but the
projects never got off the ground.
"There are a lot of ways to be led down the wrong path in this industry and
lose yourself," he says. "I am really anti that. I wake up feeling like hell
sometimes, worried and neurotic just like everybody else."
Speedman's role in "My Life Without Me" was less physically demanding than
"Underworld," but he says he found working on the small movie took a much
greater emotional toll.
"This movie makes me sad for a lot of personal reasons," he says, refusing to
elaborate.
"I spent a lot of time by myself getting ready for this movie. I actually drove
my Honda from Los Angeles to Vancouver, stopping to look at some small towns to
see where my character might live."

Costner playing ballplayer in 'Anger'
By DAVID GERMAIN

Film Festival. (AP Photo/Kevork Djansezian)
PARK CITY, Utah (AP) - There are three notable differences in Kevin
Costner's latest career move as a big-screen ballplayer:
-The star of the previous baseball flicks Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and
For Love of the Game plays a retired ballplayer in the comic drama The
Upside of Anger, which premiered over the weekend at the Sundance Film
Festival.
-Costner is a supporting performer to the film's central character, played
by Joan Allen.
-The actor known for such sober dramas as Dances With Wolves, JFK and The
Untouchables is playing a good old goofball, a big-hearted meathead with a
dopey laugh, a chronic marijuana buzz and a long-neck beer bottle
perpetually in hand.
When writer-director Mike Binder's for The Upside of Anger came his
way, Costner had a moment's hesitation about doing another ballplayer.
"But listen, I'm not that timid about, 'Ooh, what are people going to
think?"' Costner said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I didn't
think Field of Dreams had anything to do with For Love of the Game. I didn't
think that Love of the Game had anything to do with Bull Durham. And I
didn't do any of them because they were baseball.
"When I saw this, I thought the not-careful journalists will write, 'Oh,
another baseball movie.' But I did this because he was an interesting
character."
Opening theatrically in March, The Upside of Anger stars Allen as a woman
with four daughters (Erika Christensen, Evan Rachel Wood, Keri Russell and
Alicia Witt) who turns boozy and caustically bitter after her husband pulls
a vanishing act.
Costner plays Allen's laid-back neighbour, a former baseball star who
becomes her drinking buddy and eventually tumbles into an uneasy
relationship as her lover and referee for the woman's spats with her
daughters.
Allen said it was refreshing for Costner to cut loose in a jollier role.
"I thought it would be fun to see him play something like that," Allen said.
"We referred to him as a big teddy bear all the time. He was just really
lovable and sweet and kind of goofy among all these women."
Binder, also co-starring as a lecherous pal who produces a radio talk show
hosted by Costner's character, wrote the with Allen in mind. The two
had become chummy on the set of Allen's political drama The Contender, in
which Binder co-starred.
But it was Costner's star power that secured financing for the film.
Costner, an Academy Award winner for best-picture and director on Dances
With Wolves, never tried to muscle in on the production, though, said
Binder, who wrote and starred in the HBO series The Mind of the Married Man.
"He was the driving force behind getting the movie greenlighted, but he
never used that power, which I respected," Binder said. "He was always one
of the ensemble, one of the players. Never pulled rank. He never came to my
editing room, never wanted me to recut anything. He truly was just a player
and a supportive guy."
One of Hollywood's biggest box-office draws in the late 1980s and early '90s
with Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,
Costner has had fitful results with his movies over the last 12 years.
Last summer's Western Open Range, which Costner directed and starred in, and
the golf romance Tin Cup were modest successes. But his acclaimed political
drama Thirteen Days failed to find an audience, and he had flops with such
movies as the supernatural thriller Dragonfly and the heist flick 3000 Miles
to Graceland.
Costner, who turned 50 this month, said studio pressures to boost the films'
commercial prospects undermined some of his big-budgeted movies.
"I think some of the movies haven't lived up to what they should have been,"
Costner said. "When they're not done for a lot of money, sometimes you get a
clearer voice, one single voice, about what the movie's to be about. And
some of the movies for me that have not performed as well as I thought they
could have, I think was because too many voices enter into them."
Costner said he feels no career pressure to deliver another breakout hit,
saying his films have been profitable enough between theatrical and
home-video revenues.
"I know what my movies do economically. I like everybody else understand
what they do on opening weekend," Costner said. "The economic life of my
movies, I'm really comfortable with what happens to them when they go out
there, and so are the studios."

By Kate O'Hare
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) On ABC's Wednesday castaway drama "Lost," con man
Sawyer (Josh Holloway) sits on the beach reading Richard Adams' "Watership
Down."
On its surface, the novel is about several rabbits that escape the destruction
of their warren and traverse the English countryside to seek a new home. But
the tale quickly becomes one of heroism, survival and friendship, and
ultimately, the challenge of building a free society versus yielding to a
totalitarian one. It's so much more than just bunnies on the run.
When ABC first announced "Lost," it sounded like a cross between "Survivor" and
"Gilligan's Island," with plane-crash survivors on their way from Australia to
Los Angeles stranded on a deserted tropical island. But before the pilot was
over, the sudden appearance of a polar bear let you know, as co-creator (with
Damon Lindelof) J.J. Abrams put it, "this place isn't normal."
Week by week, as the characters' histories are revealed in flashbacks, and as
the island's deep strangeness makes itself gradually apparent, the show becomes
less about being stranded on an island and more about what you learn once you
get there.
"What is here on this island is actually going to start changing people," says
Ian Somerhalder, who plays rich kid Boone. "It's nice to see that the
experience on this island now is not only terrifying; it's enlightening. It's
transformative.
"That's what Damon said over and over again, that the crazy thing about the
show -- one of many -- is that all these people on this plane have seen each
other before."
"Lost" follows in the tradition of Abrams' earlier shows, "Felicity" and
"Alias." In "Felicity," a high-school graduate (Keri Russell) makes an
impulsive decision to follow the object of her affection (Scott Speedman) to
college in New York and discovers a whole new world both inside and out. In
"Alias," what is superficially a spy drama is actually an examination of love,
loss and family.
Both these shows inspired passionate devotion and debate among their fans, as
do some of Abrams' favorite shows from other producers, including "Star Trek,"
"The X-Files" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Two "Buffy" writers, David Fury
and Drew Goddard, now work on "Lost."
These shows share a willingness to tackle issues of life and death, to ponder
philosophical questions and to draw on cultural references ranging from
Shakespeare to Saturday morning cartoons. They also offer more questions than
answers, leaving viewers to feverishly work their brains to fill in the blanks.
Sometimes a little research helps. For example, in "Lost," Terry O'Quinn (a
veteran of "X-Files" and "Alias") plays John Locke, which is also the name of
the Enlightenment-era British philosopher who originated the term "tabula
rasa," or "blank slate," to describe the unformed state of the mind at birth.
The second episode of "Lost" was called "Tabula Rasa," and Locke has become
sort of the island philosopher, moving from character to character. He found
the dog belonging to young Walt (Malcolm David Kelley), helped Charlie (Dominic
Monaghan) overcome drug addiction and has taken Boone under his wing.
He's also the beneficiary of a miracle. In his flashback, viewers learned that
Locke had been in a wheelchair for four years but dreamed of going on walkabout
in Australia. When that dream was frustrated, he got on a plane to return home
-- only to discover, after the crash, that his useless legs worked. Locke has
now become the hunter-warrior of his dreams.
He also saw the giant thing that prowls the island. It may have eaten the
plane's pilot, but Locke was unafraid.
"He saw some huge thing coming through the trees," O'Quinn says, "and it came
down face to face with him. I talked to Damon Lindelof and said, 'Something is
coming through the trees. It's looking at me. Tell me something. Is it
something that terrifies me? Is it God? Is it wondrous? Is it horrible?'
"He said, 'All right, I'll tell you it's the most beautiful thing that you've
ever seen in your life.'"
Aside from surgeon Jack (Matthew Fox), who had visions of his dead father,
Locke may be most aware that the island is not an ordinary dot in the sea, and
perhaps the crash was no accident.
"He believes more than anyone," O'Quinn says, "that the island is filled with
magic and mysticism and spirituality, even to the point that he has a kind of
faith that strengthens all his inclinations. Maybe he can do things simply by
believing he can do them.
"Walking was one miracle, and that was a miracle, so who's to say they draw the
line at one? John Locke was the one that came up with the idea of tabula rasa,
the clean slate, the fresh beginning, which certainly applies to our Locke and
to everyone here.
"The island has awakened some sensitivity in him to other people and other
things. The miracle that happened to him opened his eyes. It's like the way you
hear people talk about having a near-death experience; when they come back into
the world, they see it with fresh eyes. That's what happened to Locke."
Abrams and Lindelof have tapped into our fear that, at any moment, the world
can be turned upside down, leaving us adrift. It's not a new notion. Stories
from "Robinson Crusoe" to "Lord of the Flies" trod just the same ground.
What "Lost" adds to the mix are its flashbacks, showing how the past dogs us
into the present, even if we try to escape it.
"On the island," Lindelof says, "you have this chance to reinvent yourself, and
the only person who's in on the joke is the audience."

A letter-writing campaign saved the show for another season, and the WB network came up with a resolution, where young stars will not alter their current hairstyles as a strategy to avoid a TV series, airing on the WB network, to be cancelled, or for worse, having an actor/actress fired or subsequently terminated out of his/her contract.
