Wed May 24, 10:32 PM ET
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Gray-haired soul singer Taylor Hicks won the
2006 "American Idol" contest on Wednesday, capturing the hearts and
votes of millions of viewers in the fifth edition of America's
top-rated TV show.
Hicks, 29, who was told in auditions that he had the wrong image for a
pop star, beat balladeer Katharine McPhee in the climax of a nationwide
contest that attracted tens of thousands of wannabe performers.
Hicks and McPhee sang for the title and the winner was announced on
Wednesday at the end of a star-studded finale at Hollywood's Kodak
Theater. The show featured guest performances by Prince, Dionne
Warwick, Mary J. Blige, Burt Bacharach, Toni Braxton and Meat Loaf.
Alabama native Hicks, beloved for his trademark manic dancing, is the
oldest "American Idol" in the reality TV series that has become a
ratings juggernaut for Fox TV attracting some 30 million viewers a week
since January.
Harmonica playing Hicks, who spent years singing in local nightclubs
trying to break into the business, wins a coveted recording contract
and will release his first single "Do I Make You Proud" in the next few
days.
"Thank You America! I'm living the American Dream," screamed Hicks as
he sang out the show.
McPhee, 22, a sultry Los Angeles musical theater performer, was deemed
by the three-person judging panel to have one of the best vocal talents
in "American Idol" history.
But viewers got the final say and chose the charismatic Hicks, whose
fans call themselves the "Soul Patrol." Program officials said more
than 63 million votes were sent in by phone or text but they did not
give a breakdown.
With a style that mixes Joe Cocker with Ray Charles, Hicks added
another musical genre to the Idol showcase after the pop songs of
previous winner Kelly Clarkson, the R&B sound of Ruben Studdard and
Fantasia Barrino and the country music of Carrie Underwood.
Hicks was a consistent favorite with viewers despite some acerbic
comments by British judge and record producer Simon Cowell, who said
one of his more goofy performances was like "a drunken father singing
at a wedding."
The fifth season of "American Idol" proved the most successful ever,
forcing rival TV networks to reschedule their programs to avoid
competition.
Once derided as a cheesy talent show "Idol" has gained respectability
in the industry and proved a boon for the struggling recording industry
with sales of more than 33 million records since 2002 for finalists and
runners-up.
The three "Idol" judges -- Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson --
have all have signed on for at least three more seasons and auditions
for the 2007 show start in cities across the nation in two months time.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Bubbly "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul has
signed on for three more years as the counterpoint to brutally honest
Simon Cowell on TV's hottest show, the Fox network said on Wednesday.
Abdul, a Grammy-winning singer and dancer and the show's lone female
judge, has become a fan favorite for her effusive, sometimes fawning
praise of show's aspiring stars in the face of bad boy Cowell's
punishing critiques.
"Paula's warm and nurturing nature is vital to the balance of the
show," Fox spokesman Mike Darnell said of Abdul, who is expected to
join Cowell and judge Randy Jackson for the duration of her new
contract.
"We are thrilled to have her alongside -- or actually in between --
Randy and Simon," Darnell said in a written statement.
The announcement comes less than a year after an internal investigation
by Fox found no evidence to support claims by a former "Idol"
contestant Corey Clark that he had a sexual affair with Abdul, 43, and
that she coached him privately.
"It is truly an honor to be a part of the American Idol phenomenon,"
Abdul said in a written statement. "As an artist myself it is a
pleasure to have a connection with each of the contestants and be able
to fully support their dreams and aspirations.
"Of course, I also look forward to putting Simon in his place for years
to come."
"Idol," airing two or three nights a week this year, has grown into a
ratings juggernaut for Fox and dominated U.S. television in prime time,
overshadowing the hottest series of rival networks and even big-event
broadcasts like the Grammy Awards and Winter Olympics.

The St. Petersburg Times (in Florida) asked two writers, Sean Daly and
Chase Squires, to lay out arguments as to who's the better reality TV
host: Jeff Probst of "Survivor" or Ryan Seacrest of "American Idol."
Squires laid out the arguments for Probst in each category, while Daly
made the arguments for Seacrest.
------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- -------------
The article first lists the vitals for each host:
Jeff Probst -- age: 43, height: 5'9", birthplace: Wichita, marital
status: divorced (but heavily involved), ordained minister in
Universal Life Church. Name one of People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful
People in 2001.
Ryan Seacrest -- age: 31; height: 5'7", birthplace: Atlanta, marital
status: "After George Clooney, he's the hottest bachelor in L.A."
Received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005. Named one of
People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in 2003.
------------- ------------- ------------- ------------- -------------
The Categories
Signature Look:
Probst -- Dress-for-jungle success. Every day is "casual Friday" in
the Amazon. Jeff's urban swamp look is too cool for labels, too cool
for hair gel, too cool for makeup. Too hot for Armani. Anyone can put
on khaki, few can truly wear it (see Steve Irwin).
Seacrest -- Fashionably sharp without being fashionably snobby,
Seacrest wears jeans and a button-down shirt like Cary Grant wore
suits. In other words, he'd never be caught dead donning the same
stupid Panama Jack-looking getup for 37 consecutive seasons like
Beetle freakin' Bailey.
Hidden Charm:
Probst -- It's his heart, and he wears it on his sweaty sleeve. Jeff
is pals with the guys of "Survivor," respects the ladies and loves his
gal, former contestant Julie Berry. He took a verbal shot last summer
at winner Richard Hatch'>Richard Hatch about his IRS woes but learned he had hurt
Hatch and apologized. "Life is hard, and people make mistakes," he
told reporters of Hatch's plight. Jeff would never do you wrong. And
if he did, he'd be sorry.
Seacrest -- When Seacrest consoles crying parents, leveled by the
realization that their kid will soon be working at Arby's, Ryan
becomes the rare pop culture icon who is embraced by Gen Y, Gen X and
baby boomers. A la Jerry Maguire, Seacrest is the lord of the living
room. You love him, your mom loves him, your granny loves him. Group
hug, everybody.
Ideal Man-Date:
Probst -- Jeff and I go for a long run in the jungle. We drink from
streams, dash through rivers and race to the beach where we swim among
the sea otters. As the sun sets, Jeff builds a fire using wet
driftwood and a seashell, catches dinner with his strong hands and
finds a cooler full of product-placement soda buried in the sand. He
summons the gang for a sing-along by the fire, and as sparks from the
fire drift to the stars, he recounts his exploits and adventures. Then
he gives me the keys to a new SUV.
Seacrest -- It's 3 a.m., and Seacrest and I are cruising down the
Sunset Strip, thankful that Randy Jackson has agreed to be our
designated driver. We've managed to seduce the Olsen twins into the
back seat, and the Moet is flowing. To be honest, the rest of the
night is a blur, but in the morning, after I wake up at Courtney
Love's house and can't find my wallet, Seacrest will make the call to
my fiancee. She'll fall in love with Ryan, too -- but at least she'll
forgive me.
Brawny Moment:
Probst -- Jeff's entire life is a Brawny moment. In Africa, he was
stung by a scorpion ("You're in a tent, you shake your shoes out every
day"), and on an island, chopping a coconut, he cut his wrist to the
bone with a machete. (Note to Ryan: That's a big, manly knife.)
Seacrest -- No brawn, just brains. Seacrest is too smart to be
trapped, year after year, in a tsetse-infested jungle, muttering about
alliances and torches and looking like the Man With The Yellow Hat's
evil cousin.
Greatest Moment:
Probst -- "Survivor All-Stars" (2004), a deranged Susan Hawk erupts,
claiming Richard Hatch'>Richard Hatch assaulted her. "I was violated, humiliated,
dehumanized," she explodes. Jeff leads her to a boat and off the
island. His quiet power is awesome.
Seacrest -- On last Tuesday's show, bottle-blond Heather Cox was
getting savaged by Simon Cowell. Protecting the doe-eyed lass,
Seacrest made quick work of the man-breasted Cowell: "And I would have
worn a T-shirt under that sweater, but we all make mistakes."

No Message From Jacko at Farewell Party
Monday, June 20, 2005
By Roger Friedman
Michael Jackson's farewell party on Friday night was a bust.
http://www.foxnews.com/printer_friendly_story/0,3566,160031,00.html
It will be remembered not for jubilation and forgiveness, but for another
first in the Jackson record books: Associated Press legend Linda Deutsch,
the dean of court reporters, was thrown out by goons from the casino who
worked on the say-so of the Jackson family.
The goons, called "police" internally by the Chumash Casino, surrounded the
five-foot-tall Deutsch as she sat in a chair and quietly watched the
proceedings.
She was sporting a wristband that was required for entry into the party,
which was actually an under-attended blues concert performed by Michael's
brother, Tito Jackson.
Deutsch had obtained the band from a friend, sources tell me, after learning
that even her local hairdresser had gained admittance. It wasn't exactly
Truman Capote's Black and White Ball, if you know what I mean.
Suddenly one of the goons started shouting, "Linda Deutsch, you must leave!"
With that they moved her up and out of her chair and out of the casino
altogether.
This was only a short time after Deutsch had come across Jackson co-defense
counsel Robert Sanger, another invitee. According to witnesses, Sanger
whined to Deutsch that he was mad she'd written that the only reason he'd
gotten his job with Tom Mesereau was because he'd successfully defended
Jackson in a civil matter here a decade ago.
Deutsch denied writing that. But really, why does Sanger think he was hired?
Removing Deutsch from the room meant seriously decreasing attendance for
Tito's show, since the casino theatre has a capacity of over 1000 seats.
Fewer than 400 people were there, and many began to leave once the music
started.
And where is Michael Jackson? In all likelihood he's either in Switzerland
today, or arriving there later. He is gone. Gone from Neverland without so
much as a wave to the loyal 100 or so fans who came to Santa Maria from many
foreign counties on their dime (or peseta) and remained until the trial
ended.
Most of these fans have been waiting outside the Neverland gates for days,
hopeful that someone would acknowledge their support and generosity.
But in six days, no one at Neverland has bothered to send as much as a
cookie to these people. Last night I spoke to the remaining few who still
held out hope of a meeting with or message from their idol. But little by
little the crowd is dispersing, and today there should be substantially
fewer of them as their money runs out.
Meanwhile, Michael's brother Randy Jackson - who did not attend Friday's
party because he hoped to throw his own in Las Vegas - is expected in New
York on Monday. The youngest Jackson will try and see the bankers from
Fortress Investments who now control Michael's $270 million in loans that
they bought from Bank of America on April 25.
Despite the ending of the trial, Michael Jackson remains perilously
cash-strapped. Look for some kind of news before the end of this week about
another staff downsizing at Neverland.
