Survivor: Rock'n'roll can save, and destroy, says Lenny Kravitz.
Two years in the making and a birthday milestone later, this Kravitz album
reflects on a colourful past, Jane Rocca writes.
He's had 15 years in the spotlight and became a household name as a rock
musician who flirts with soul and funk not to mention legions of women.
Now Lenny Kravitz has turned 40. Not that he's too bothered either way.
"I don't necessarily look at my age and think 'Oh, it's a huge feat,' " said
the Miami-based musician, who celebrated his birthday earlier this year. "I
don't think turning 40 is a milestone just as I don't think turning 50 is. I
know people in their 70s who act younger than someone in their 20s. You know
what I mean? Age is an illusion, you know."
Kravitz might have a reputation as a hard-core rock'n'roller who lives life
to the full (to say the least) but the singer is also a parent to his
16-year-old daughter Zoe, who lives with him in Miami.
Zoe was born to Kravitz's former partner Lisa Bonet, who starred in The
Cosby Show all those years ago. Bonet and Kravitz met in 1986 and wed in Las
Vegas a year later. That relationship didn't last, with speculation Bonet
refused to put up with Kravitz's infidelities. But the singer cherishes his
daughter.
"I love my child, she is very special to me and it's great having her live
with me", he said by phone from the US. "You know being a parent teaches you
new responsibilities and I do raise my child well. I grew up a Christian and
I teach her the same Christian values. We're quite a spiritual family. I
believe in God and I do all I can to be a decent person."
Kravitz's new album, Baptism, is his first in two years and his seventh for
his career. The popular star has achieved multi-platinum status and won four
Grammy Awards.
Audiences first became aware of Kravitz with albums including 1989's Let
Love Rule and 1991's Mama Said (with the classic single It Ain't Over Til
It's Over) before his career went ballistic with his third album in 1993,
Are You Gonna Go My Way?. Songs such as Fly Away and American Woman made him
a superstar, not to mention the sex appeal of the singer himself. His
tattoos and piercings only added to the mystery of the
bad-boy-meets-a-sensitive-new-age-type.
Kravitz also became a cosy topic for the tabloids, having been associated
with women as diverse as Natalie Imbruglia to his more recent flame Nicole
Kidman in a relationship that ended last Christmas. "You know the paparazzi
can follow me around and see me at bars and hanging out with beautiful women
and make all sorts of assumptions but they don't really know anything about
the relationships and friendships I have with these people," he said.
On Baptism, Kravitz has written a range of songs which deal with the topic
of celebrity, including Minister Of Rock'N'Roll, where he sings: "Come to me
baby because I'm the star, but look out because life on this side is
dangerous."
"I'm just saying it how it is," Kravitz said. "Rock'n'roll can be a saviour
but it can destroy you as well." For someone who has seemingly always
relished the spotlight, he has another moment of doubt in I Don't Want To Be
A Star.
"There are days I wake up and think to myself I'd like to have a normal life
where nobody would recognise me," he said. "Sometimes being in the limelight
can be difficult because so much of you is put in the public eye."
Kravitz was born in Brooklyn to Sy Kravitz, a TV news producer, and Roxie
Roker an actor in the US television series The Jeffersons. His childhood was
divided between New York and Los Angeles and he said this album captured
stories about his life from the east coast to the west. There's no denying
it's been a colourful existence.
"I have experienced a lot in life and with this album I wanted to take a
moment to reflect on what has gone on in it," Kravitz said. "That included
childhood memories and teenage memories. But at the same time I am not being
nostalgic and teary-eyed about it. It's about a celebration. In many ways
making this record felt like I was making my first, there was a real sense
of purpose and new energy to it."
Kravitz said Baptism also salutes his mother, who died from cancer in 1995.
"She was a main strength in my life and as I get older and hopefully wiser I
can see the true value of loving those around you for a long time and the
need to respect and treat people well. I was privileged to be raised by
great parents and I miss my mother a lot but I also have to be a strong
person to carry my family on."
At 40, Kravitz is relatively content with his life having survived a
roller-coaster ride in the rock'n'roll industry but he's still searching for
a woman he can settle down with.
"I know I am a lucky person to be in this position but I have worked hard,"
he said. "I am an emotional guy. I dream of settling down now that I am 40,
but I am single and can only wait to see what my future holds from here on
in."

marriage to Lisa Bonet ended, Kravitz has dated a string of nubile supermodels
like Devon Aoki and Adriana Lima, and developed such a studly reputation, he
can get away with wearing Mamas and Papas castoffs.

OK, Naomi Watts, it's time to fess up. New Idea has you having dinner with
your best mate Nicole Kidman's ex, Tom Cruise, at Chianti in LA, where, NI
tells us, Warren Beatty once presented Madonna with a diamond as big as the
Ritz.
Where Tom's meaningful other, Penelope Cruz, was at the time, heaven only
knows. NI tells us that Nic was in New York sporting a large rock, courtesy
of new love interest Lenny Kravitz, who is pictured pretending he is the
ideal surrogate dad for Nic's two rug rats by patting them on the head.
Meanwhile, back at the Chianti, Naomi and Tom are cosying up.
And what of poor young Heath Ledger, Naomi's squeeze who was briefly her
ex-squeeze? NI also features a spread of them going the grope on each other.
What is going on?
Wacko Jacko has become yesterday's news, with few sightings of him in this
week's mags. He made it to "People in the News" in Who, and that's it. How
soon they forget.
NW promises "Inside Gywneth's [Paltrow] shock pregnancy". Thankfully, it
doesn't deliver.
NW claims our Nic had a face-to-face with Lenny's ex, Lisa Bonet, in
Florida. Once again, plenty of fire promised in the heading, but it went
smoothly and they all went out clubbing together. Some face-off.
That constantly dieting blood nut Fergie is still wasting away and tells
Fresh that she's as fit as a Mallee bull and twice as dangerous. At 44, she
wants to have another kid to add to the two she had with Prince Andrew, both
of whom sadly look like him. Father-to-be is a property developer called
Rupert Beckwith-Smith. But that is top secret.
Woman's Day has spoken to Princess Di's psychic, Liala Farouk Mckay, who
claims Prince William will marry an Australian girl who will then be at his
side when he finally becomes king. This is dubious; Melanie Howard recently
married.
Underwear-challenged Sharon Stone has done a Demi Moore and nailed some
hapless youngster who, according to Woman's Day, is Oliver Hudson, Kate
Hudson's brother and Goldie Hawn's son. The 45-year-old Sharon must have
been hanging around day-care centres, because he is only 26.
NW claims Cameron Diaz is being urged to have a nose job for her career's
sake. Yeah, right, like it's been a big flop so far.
Barn-sized and pregnant Kate Hudson is unhappy with her looks at present and
NW has kindly run some snaps to show why. And Fresh claims that Jennifer
Aniston's bum is the most popular in America, just shading J.Lo's. Oddly,
the pics in Fresh show Aniston doesn't have one and J.Lo does.

Have Nicole Kidman and Lenny Kravitz quietly gotten engaged?
For months, reps for the actress and the rocker have scoffed at speculation
that they were dating, but yesterday a source close to Kravitz put out the word
that they are betrothed.
"No comment," said Kravitz's spokeswoman.
"As far as I know they're just friends," said Kidman's.
A week ago, Kidman told us she's simply making use of his spectacular SoHo loft
while her $8 million duplex in the West Village is being finished. We didn't
get a chance to ask her where Lenny has been sleeping. But we do know that
they've been seeing a lot of each other.
This past Sunday, they came together to the Apollo Theater memorial for dancer
Gregory Hines. One spy says Kravitz is a regular visitor on the local set of
"The Stepford Wives," Kidman's latest film. They were "mighty cuddly," says
another spy, "while grooving to the antique jukebox in the bar at Tavern on the
Green" recently.
Over the summer, they were spotted at the Mercer Kitchen, Tao, 66, Bungalow 8
and Lobby.
Though linked with Q-Tip and Jude Law, Kidman, 37, hasn't had a full-fledged
romance with anyone since her divorce from Tom Cruise.
Kravitz, 39, who divorced Lisa Bonet in 1993 (they have one daughter), recently
split with Victoria's Secret model Adriana Lima. Lima had also said she and
Kravitz were engaged.

Lisa Bonet Granted Restraining Order Against 'Stalker'
Hollywood actress Lisa Bonet has been awarded a restraining order against an
alleged stalker who the The Cosby Show actress claims regularly performs
voodoo rituals outside her California home.
Bonet, who was once married to Lenny Kravitz and has starred in a string of
films including 'Enemy of the State,' claims Francesca Jacobs has also sent
her over 100 letters and packages.
An insider tells the TV show Celebrity Justice that a Santa Monica judge has
ordered Jacobs to remain at least 24,100 yards away from Bonet, her home,
her place of work and her car.
Jacobs has reportedly harassed a number of celebrities and the judge was
further swayed to issue the restraining order to protect Bonet and Kravitz's
15-year-old daughter, Zoe.
