You know it's bad when Oprah Winfrey has to make a house call.
After theater reviews blasted Julia Roberts' performance in "Three Days
of Rain" Thursday, America's therapist paid a visit to her Gramercy
Park apartment to lend encouragement, according to a source. Actually,
the source's exact words were "pity party," but you get the idea.
Oprah was accompanied by best friend Gayle King and an assistant on her
40-minute Broadway bereavement call, which took place early Thursday
afternoon.
Winfrey and King had attended the play's gala premiere the night before
along with stars like James Gandolfini, Sam Rockwell, Susan Sarandon
and Tim Robbins, Joel Grey, Marcia Gay Harden and Rosie Perez.
A tense-looking Roberts and her husband, Danny Moder, were photographed
walking around her neighborhood the morning of the negative reviews.
A spokes=ADwoman for Winfrey confirmed the visit, but would not comment
on what was discussed.

Hollywood reality check
By LOUIS B. HOBSON -- Calgary Sun
Actors love getting real and for good reason.
Just ask Jamie Foxx who won this year's best actor Oscar for his amazing
impersonation of Ray Charles in Ray.
He joins a long list of men and women who have wowed audiences and Academy
voters by inhabiting the body and soul of a famous or infamous person.
Oscar voters had quite a task in selecting Foxx this year because three of
his fellow nominees also starred in biographies.
Leonardo DiCaprio played Howard Hughes in The Aviator, while Johnny Depp
tackled eccentric writer J.M. Barrie in Finding Neverland. Don Cheadle was
recognized for Hotel Rwanda.
Cate Blanchett won this year's best supporting actress Oscar for bringing
Katharine Hepburn to life in The Aviator.
Blanchett joins a long list of actresses who won their Oscars for playing
real people including, Charlize Theron for Monster, Hilary Swank for Boys
Don't Cry, Nicole Kidman for The Hours, Julia Roberts for Erin Brockovich,
Susan Sarandon for Dead Man Walking, Jennifer Connelly for A Beautiful Mind
and Marcia Gay Harden for Pollock.
Last year also found Kevin Spacey playing crooner Bobby Darin in Beyond The
Sea, Kevin Kline as composer Cole Porter in De-Lovely, Liam Neeson as Alfred
Kinsey in Kinsey, Gael Garcia Bernal as a young Che Guevara in The
Motorcycle Diaries and Jim Caviezel as Jesus in The Passion of the Christ.
This year's reality check reveals there are far fewer biographies which
drastically narrows the field of possible Oscar nominees for the daunting
and daring task of getting real.
KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (May 6): Orlando Bloom plays Balian of Ibelin who defended
the walled city of Jerusalem during the Second Crusades. Ridley Scott says
"the major characters in Kingdom of Heaven all existed as did this famous
battle, but two steps back from that and everything in our movie is
fiction."
Oscar Nomination Odds: 100 to 1
CINDERELLA MAN (June 3): Russell Crowe teams with his A Beautiful Mind
director Ron Howard to play Depression folk hero Jim Braddock who defeated
the legendary Max Baer to become heavyweight champion. Renee Zellweger plays
Braddock's wife Mae.
Crowe received Oscar nominations for playing real whistle-blower Jeffrey
Wiggand in The Insider and John Nash in A Beautiful Mind proving the Academy
voters love him in biographies.
Oscar Nomination Odds: 10 to 1
THE BROTHERS GRIMM (July 29): In this wild fantasy adventure from Terry
Gilliam, the German brothers who wrote some of the most famous fairy tales
are played by Matt Damon and Heath Ledger. Instead of focusing on their real
lives, Gilliam has turned them into a pair of con artists who are inspired
to write twisted fairy tales when they encounter real dark magic in a dark
forest. What is worrisome is The Brothers Grimm has been sitting in
post-production limbo for more than a year.
Oscar Nomination Odds: 200,000 to 1
THE GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED (Sept. 30): Shia LaBeouf who starred as Keanu
Reeve's sidekick in Constantine plays Francis Ouimet who, at age 20 in 1913,
became the youngest golfer to win the U.S. Open. Actor-turned-director Bill
Paxton filmed in Canada using such movie and stage veterans as Jackie
Burroughs, Len Cariou and Elias Koteas who have better chances of being
recognized in supporting roles than LaBeouf even if he does all his own
swinging and putting.
Oscar Nomination Odds: 100,000 to 1
JARHEAD (Nov. 11): Jake Gyllenhaal plays former marine Anthony Swofford
serving his term in Kuwait. Joining Gyllenhaal are Jamie Foxx, Peter
Sarsgaard and Chris Cooper, but the real ace up the sleeve for this one is
Sam Mendes who received an Oscar for directing American Beauty. This one
also has the advantage of making indirect comments on the current conflict
in Iraq.
Oscar Nomination Odds: 10 to 1
WALK THE LINE (Nov. 18): Johnny Cash's life always played out like a movie
and it features a cast of characters that include Elvis Presley, Waylon
Jennings, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Johnny's wife June Carter and her
whole clan. Joaquin Phoenix plays Johnny with Reese Witherspoon as June and
both are doing their own singing, as well as laying bare their characters'
rawer emotions. Playing Cash moved Phoenix to admit his own alcohol problems
and check into rehab, which will move his colleagues.
Oscar Nomination Odds: 2 to 1
CASANOVA (Dec. 25): Lasse Hallstrom directs Heath Ledger as the fabled
Casanova. It will be a great costume drama and will afford plumb roles for
supporting actors such as Jeremy Irons, Lena Olin and Sienna Miller.
Hallstrom (The Cider House Rules, My Life as a Dog) is a favourite of the
Academy.
Oscar Nomination Odds: 10 to 1

NY DAILY NEWS...RUSH AND MOLLOY
Could it possibly be true that Joan Collins is a swag hag?
In what must be a record in celebrity freebie grabbing, the
novel-writing TV diva demanded a $25,000 goodie bag after just seven
minutes at the Entertainment Weekly Oscar party.
We saw Collins zip into Elaine's, pose for snaps, and ricochet out in
less time than you could say, "Alexis Carrington" - but not before
insisting on loot.
"Will my gift bag be in my limo?" we heard Collins ask two young party
organizers, who nervously imparted the bad news that Collins would have
to wait for delivery the next day.
"I wanted the boots!" she said as she marched out the soign=E9 saloon's
door in a huff, leaving behind Liza Minnelli, Marcia Gay Harden, Katie
Holmes and Candace Bushnell.

Marcia Gay Harden played her in the Sinatra telepic. I was set to
scorn her as I couldn't see it at all. But through the force of the
personality she projected, Harden played a very believable Gardner.
(IMO, of course.)
Beckensale is pretty, but she isn't sensual and volumptious like
Gardner. And while she is a decent actress, she isn't skilled enough
to create a character that has attributes so far from her own
Rebecca.

Pre-show on E!
Melissa looks fabulous. She's much more personable than her mother,
who, by the way, is WAY more palatable if you hit "mute" as soon as
you see her face the camera.
6:04, and she's still yapping.
6:07, back from commercial, and she's yapping AGAIN. Why does E! do
this to us?
Keshia Castle-Hughes looks adorable - but I keep wanting to call her
Keshia Knight-Pullam. "Whale Rider," by the way, is a FANTASTIC
movie.
Do you think Ken Watanabe's first name is really Ken?
Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are taking this Starsky and Hutch thing
way too far.
Heath Ledger is channeling Justin Timberlake, and it's not pretty.
Marcia Gay Harden is channeling early Ricki Lake, and it's very
pretty.
Susan Sarandon looks AMAZING. If I didn't know better, I'd say she
had work done.
Then again, maybe she's changed her philosophy.
I'll bet Joan Rivers hasn't seen all the movies she claims she has.
She just asked Tim Robbins if "Mystic River" had a sad ending or a
happy ending.
Jack Black nauseates me.
Scarlet Johannson looks fabulous when her dress doesn't match her
skin. Naomi Watts should take a lesson. Scarlet still needs to learn
about fit, though - the top was too loose and the bottom was too
tight.
I don't even recognize Bobcat Goldthwaite any more.
Jennifer Garner has the perfect body for couture, and she always looks
elegant.
Kelly Lynch looks like an explosion in an organza factory.
Charlize Theron appears to have a really bad artificial tan, which
unfortunately clashes with her silver dress. Yikes.
Wouldn't you think the Oscars would command better commercials, like
the Super Bowl? These are pathetic.
Either Johnny Depp is making another movie or he's decided to look
attractive again.
Maybe the Fab Five got hold of him. Ruff!
Uma Thurman as Swiss milkmaid, Diane Keaton as Charlie Chaplin.
I love it when they leave Joan's mike on and we can hear her clueless
meanderings.
Pre-show on ABC:
Good opening, but I'm wondering why they're moving along at such
breakneck speed.
Oh, now I know. They wanted to get through that ridiculously ed
encounter between Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson before too many people
went away to check the Weather Channel.
Does Sophia Coppola have scoliosis? Her mouth isn't working too well,
either.
Lord, to be 13 years old and be introduced to Johnny Depp.
The awards show:
Good opening! I laughed out loud when he did a turn as Legolas.
I know many people don't care for that musical montage he does, but I
gotta confess…
I love it.
CZJ doing the model walk to the front of the stage. Get over yourself
already.
Great semi-political statement by Tim Robbins. Stop the cycle of
violence.
Okay, I take it back about the commercials. I'll have to go to the
bathroom during the acceptance speeches.
Seems like they're actually giving the recipients a longer time to
speak this year.
"Sounds of Oscar" doesn't seem to be picking up much sound.
Jada and Will are just too damn cute. Thank God they quit
coordinating their outfits, or I'd have to puke.
Blake Edwards is too cool.
Diane Lane - too many openings, too many bulges for such a classy
lady.
They can make microphones cordless, but they can't make them
invisible?
Phil Collins is aging into Bob Hoskins.
I expected to hate Will Ferrell and Jack Black. I didn't.
Glad to see that Annie Lennox hasn't gone the boobular enhancement
route, even though it would balance her out.
Peter Jackson's lady is… interesting.
Whoever dressed the woman filmmaker from Canada is evil. She must not
own a mirror.
Toby McGuire, lookin' butch!
Sophia Coppola acts like she's medicated. What a flatliner!

Face your fears.
Live your dreams.

Julia's Italian smile
By Kimberley Porteous
January 21, 2004
After sixteen years in the spotlight, Julia Roberts - who makes her
producing debut here next month with Mona Lisa Smile - is still stung by the
"evil beast" that is the celebrity rumour mill.
The American sweetheart and Oscar-winning actress married cinematographer
Danny Moder in 2002, and has had to contend with gossip columns forecasting
the demise of their relationship for almost as long.
Roberts tells February's InStyle magazine that the scuttlebutt around her
and Moder may be beyond her control, but that it can still hurt.
"I guess I feel like he's an innocent bystander, and so that can graze me a
little bit. It's not fair to him. But it's the evil beast, and it exists in
a land removed from us."
"I feel like my marriage is so special and there are no holes to poke in
it."
Roberts would prefer to talked about for producing - and starring in - Mona
Lisa Smile, a moving yet uplifting drama about an inspirational university
teacher trying to educate her students beyond finding the right husband. Set
in the starchy 1950s, Roberts' progressive professor character, Katherine
Watson, challenges the college administration and the differing expectations
of her upper-crust charges.
Her company, Red Om Films ('Moder' backwards) made the movie, with Moder
working as a director of photography on the project.
Roberts was attracted to the because "there were a lot of intriguing
conflicts. You put this woman with a West Coast bohemian background on a
train to proper New England - that's interesting stuff. And this was a great
time for it, when there were so many really good actresses to play the
students", she tells InStyle.
Roberts took an active role in choosing her co-stars, whom make up a shining
ensemble cast. Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles and Maggie Gyllenhaal all play
students while Marcia Gay Harden plays a fellow professor.
Mona Lisa Smile takes its title from the Leonardo Da Vinci painting, as
Roberts plays an art history professor, albeit one who has never had the
opportunity to travel to Italy to see the art she teaches.
Not so for the actress. "I love Italy," she tells InStyle, , where the
magazine photographed the star "Everybody's got all the time in the world,
whether to execute a wedding or a dinner."
Attending a wedding in the north of the country was a sublime experience:
"The bride processed through this tiny village. The villagers were out
applauding, blowing kisses. She walked to a walled garden where they
exchanged vows .. beautiful."
The star remembers her first trip to Italy just as fondly, although it was a
vastly different experience.
"That was before I knew about Fodor's. I thought that you just got there and
figured it out. And - I don't care how stupid this makes me sound - I got to
Venice and went, 'I'm supposed to get on a boat?!'"

- [talking about Lee Krasner, her character in Pollock]: "When she was first married, Lee's main concern was pleasing Jackson, she was the kind of woman who hung her hat on another man's peg to find herself, in spite of how brilliant she was in her own right. Their marriage was wonderful, fabulous, and hideous. They fed off each other in ways that weren't always healthy, but, if they hadn't been together, Pollock never would have become world famous and Lee wouldn't have pushed herself to the artistic limits she did. As soon as they split apart, one of them was bound to destruct."
- [on winning the Oscar despite low pre-award expectations] "Vegas had me at 12-to-1 odds. I sure do wish I had bet on myself and made a little money."
- Nominated for a Tony Award for her work on Broadway in "Angels in America."
- Graduated from the University of Texas with a B.A. in theater (1980) and earned an MFA from the graduate theater program at New York University.
- Her father, brother and husband are all named Thaddaeus.
- Listed as one of twelve "Promising New Actors of 1990" in John Willis' Screen World, Vol. 42. [1990]
