Maria Bello to Direct
By WENN|Friday, January 13, 2006
Photo GalleryHOLLYWOOD - A History of Violence beauty Maria Bello is
planning to abandon acting to be a director.
The talented star is convinced there's more to life than being a screen
icon--and she's already finished writing a screenplay for her directorial
debut.
She says, "I'm writing and I plan to direct. I've finished one screenplay
which is like a Mystic Pizza on the Jersey Shore and that's the one I'll
direct.”
“At first, I wasn't sure about what kind of director I could be because I'm
quite a scattered human being. But the more time I spend on set, the more I
realize I have the right qualities."

Viggo Mortensen - Hollywood's most elusive star
December 22, 2005, 6:46:58
By Philip Hamilton.
Despite starring in three of the most talked about movies in recent years,
'Lord of the Rings' star Viggo Mortensen tries his best to shun the fame
game - you'd be more likely to see him at a poetry reading than gallivanting
round Beverley Hills with a model on his arm.
With his rugged good looks and star quality, the actor could have quite
easily fallen into the trap of becoming tabloid fodder like many stars
before him.
But he is notoriously cagey about his private life and considers any
discussion of his own romantic affairs as "not pertinent."
However, there is no doubting that the 47-year-old has a colourful love life
and speculation about the women in his life has been rife since the break-up
of his marriage to punk singer and mother of his 16-year-old son, Henry,
Exene Cervenka, in 1997.
As well as starring opposite some of Hollywood's most beautiful women,
including Liv Tyler, Gwyneth Paltrow and Demi Moore, Viggo has been linked
to a string of beauties off-screen. Viggo has remained tight-lipped about
his romances but it seems not all girls are bowled over by the handsome
actor.
In 2003, he was dumped by 22-year-old Lola Achnabel, his girlfriend of two
years, because he reportedly didn't wash enough and liked to go away for
extended periods without telling anyone where he's going. He admits that his
sometimes erratic behaviour and lack of communication has, in the past,
caused friction with his ex-wife and son.
During the filming of one movie, Viggo decided to get into character by not
speaking for four weeks - not even to his family.
He said: "Because my son at the time was about eight years old, I faxed my
ex-wife and said, 'I'm not going to be speaking for a while, but I will
call. And can you put Henry on the phone?' So I'd call and she'd say, 'Hi
Viggo, how are you?' and I would be silent."
However peculiar his behaviour may sound, this is Viggo's way of getting
into character and once he starts acting, everything else takes second
place - even if he injures himself.
During the filming of 'Lord Of The Rings', the Hollywood heartthrob broke
one of his front teeth while shooting a violent scene in New Zealand. But he
was so determined to carry on filming he even suggested using Superglue to
fix the tooth so the shoot wouldn't be held up.
His serious approach to the characters he plays means that he often becomes
too involved with the parts he portrays. In the vigorous sex scene in 'A
History of Violence', Viggo and his co-star Maria Bello didn't have body
doubles and ended up with bruises from the rampant romping.
He revealed: "The process of working on it with her was awkward to perform,
because we did it right. Maria didn't play it safe and was willing, as
difficult as it was, to go for it and to risk making a fool of herself. I
was also willing to make a fool of myself and so it worked well in the end.
The scene goes on for longer than you would normally see, certainly in an
American movie. The power position shifts and the jockeying for position is
interesting emotionally, as well as the physical aspect."
Viggo is so dedicated to his craft that he is eager to thank the people that
helped put him where he is today - his fans.
But the more successful his acting career becomes, the less time he has to
answer fan mail.
He said: "I always, until just the last year, opened, read and then answered
each one. And if I'm going to do it, that's the way it should be done. But I
realised I was spending two to three hours every night. One night, I just
thought, this is ridiculous."
However, when given the opportunity he makes sure he doesn't forget his fans
and signs autographs in person - even if it means scribbling for nine hours
at bookstore signings. Since his screen debut as a young Amish Farmer in
Peter Weir's 'Witness' in 1985, Viggo's career has been marked by a steady
string of compelling performances.
Critics have continually recognised his work in over thirty movies,
including such diverse projects as Jane Campion's 'The Portrait of a Lady
(1996), Sean Penn's 'The Indian Runner (1991), Brian De Palma's 'Carlito's
Way' (1993), Ridley Scott's 'G.I. Jane' (1997), Tony Scott's 'Crimson Tide'
(1995), Andrew Davis' 'A Perfect Murder' (1998) and Tony Goldwyn's 'A Walk
on the Moon' (1999).
He is now working on new movie 'Alatriste, due for release in 2006, in which
he plays Spanish soldier-turned-mercenary Captain Alatriste, a veteran of
Spain's 17th century imperial wars.

David Cronenberg's On Set Public Sex Scenes
September 27, 2005, 7:24:15
CRONENBERG'S PUBLIC SEX
Eccentric film-maker DAVID CRONENBERG shocked his cast and crew on the set
of new movie A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, by publicly performing sex scenes with
his wife.
The director hoped his explicit displays of affection with his wife would
help stars VIGGO MORTENSEN and MARIA BELLO, who play man and wife in the
film, feel more comfortable during their sex scenes together.
But, instead, the Cronenbergs just left everyone on the set stunned.
THE LORD OF THE RINGS star Mortensen says, "There's a couple of fairly racy
sex scenes in the movie... between Maria Bello and myself. David, trying to
be helpful, as usual, thought it might be a good idea to call up his wife
and have her come down to the set.
"The crew and Maria and I just sat and watched while he and his wife got
into something comfortable - nothing - and they started to say, 'We want you
to (do this).' Maria and I were both going, 'OK, we get it.'
"This is a testament to their relationship, they kept going and they kept
going and then we broke for lunch and some time in the evening Maria and I
got to have a crack at it.
"Instead of putting us at ease, we actually were kind of freaked out...
Maybe some things ought to stay private."

Mortensen & Bello Injured After Violent Sex Scene
Movie stars Viggo Mortensen and Maria Bello were left battered and bruised
after shooting a hard-hitting sex scene on a wooden stairwell in the new
David Cronenberg film, "A History of Violence."
The couple, who play husband and wife in the gritty drama, spent weeks
preparing for and talking about the scene, but had no idea it would leave
them in so much pain.
Bello reveals, "I was covered from head to toe in black and blue and red
bruises -- Viggo, too. His whole hip and his elbow was swollen. I bit the
inside of his lip and it was swollen for, like, two days.
"We really committed to the scene and couldn't help but get physical. I was
really in pain after that scene.
"There's a scene in the movie where I have a bruise on my back -- that was
filmed three weeks later.
"Emotionally, it was very tough, too. I've been, in my life, such a control
freak, and, in my work, I always question how things are going to work I
talk about a scene for hours.
"For this, David (Cronenberg) simply said, 'Maria, you can't control this
one.' The scene is about her finally losing control and she comes out with
this animal instinct; a desire and a passion that she never knew existed
before."

Michael Pena, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Maria Bello have been added to the cast
of Oliver Stone's forthcoming film about the September 11, 2001, terror
attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York.
The movie, also starring Nicolas Cage, will be based on the story of two

Cronenberg's film shocks Cannes
By BRUCE KIRKLAND -- Toronto Sun
CANNES, France -- Atom Egoyan wowed the Cannes Film Festival with a lot of
sex and a little violence in his film-noirish Where The Truth Lies.
Now fellow Canadian David Cronenberg is shocking the festival with a little
sex and a lot of violence in his drama, A History Of Violence.
"Well," the bemused Cronenberg told a Cannes press conference yesterday as
his operatic action film made its world premiere in competition last night,
"sex and violence have always gone very well together. It's like bacon and
eggs.
"And, if you look at the history of cinematic violence, you will see, I
think, that there is always a sexual component in violence and there is a
violent component in sexuality. So, to me, that is just a natural thing to
explore."
Cronenberg, like Egoyan, is a Toronto filmmaker. The Canadian films in the
2005 competition have had a huge impact with their controversial yet
rigourously thought-out content.
Cronenberg's shows what happens to an idealized midwestern American family
after the father (Viggo Mortensen) kills two thugs who terrorize his diner.
The man's lawyer wife, played by Maria Bello, is at first concerned and then
shocked by how events spin out of control, including with more violence,
after the incident. Even their sex life changes, entering a dangerous new
phase.
Mortensen said he respects how both Peter Jackson and Cronenberg explore
themes of violence. "It's a tool," Mortensen said of the violence his
characters employ in both The Lord Of The Rings (Aragorn) and in A History
Of Violence.
"It's a learned skill that they have, that they have needed to use. In
neither case, and certainly not in this movie, is it glamourized (or) made
to look particularly beautiful. To me, it's a movie about other things."
Those "things" include issues about authority and family as well as secrets
and lies.
Cronenberg said a filmmaker does have a responsibility when depicting
violence, especially extreme violence. But it is not in a cliched way just
to protect audiences.
"The responsibility is to the art form ... Your first fidelity is to the
film itself. You are trying to realize the potential of the ."
Cronenberg said he's tired of critics who charge that violence in movies
promotes violence in society.
"Do people kill people when they see people killed on screen? I think if
that were true, the world would be de-populated.
"What we did in this movie, (in terms of) violence, is ultra-responsible
because it's a serious discussion of the nature of violence and the impact
it has on society and family and human life, and on human bodies as well."

Hawke's hot role
By Steven Rea
March 31, 2005
ETHAN Hawke has no Hollywood game plan, bar keeping it independent ... and
interesting.
There's something kind of pleasing about working inside these genres," says
Ethan Hawke, who stars as a shell-shocked police sarge in the gleefully
generic Assault On Precinct 13.
"It's like jazz musicians, taking a very familiar, very commercial tune -
say, Jingle Bells - and then you put a spin on it. You know exactly how it's
going to work. You just have to riff around it."
Jingle Bells is a good example, since Assault on Precinct 13 - a remake of
John Carpenter's 1976 police station siege pic - is set at the end of the
Christmas holiday week, on New Year's Eve.
Hawke is the top gun in an all-but deserted Detroit police station, sharing
the graveyard shift with Drea De Matteo's oversexed secretary and an
over-the-hill beat cop (Brian Dennehy).
Then a bus full of bad guys - among them Laurence Fishburne, John Leguizamo
and Ja Rule - is diverted to the station, and Maria Bello, who plays Hawke's
shrink, shows up too. Gabriel Byrne chews up scenery as a tainted police
detective. And then all hell breaks loose.
"I knew of John Carpenter's movie," says Hawke about the original Assault,
which had a cast led by the unforgettable Austin Stoker, Darwin Joston and
Laurie Zimmer (Who, who and who?).
"I'd seen it when I was younger, then never even really watched it again."
So when director Jean-Francois Richet and producer/writer James DeMonaco
came along, Hawke sat and talked, and then read the .
"I was looking to do something fun, something that didn't take itself too
seriously. I had a real good time working on Training Day and I was seeing
if I could follow up that genre."
In some ways, Hawke's character, Jake Roenick, can be seen as the
what-could-have-happened continuation of his Training Day role the new kid
riding with the rogue LA narc (played by Denzel Washington in an
Oscar-winning performance).
As Assault on Precinct 13 begins, Hawke is once again undercover, consorting
with dealers, worried about the lives of his team.
"In a way, it could have been a sequel," he notes. "If Jake was sitting in a
precinct house outside of LA instead of Detroit ... it could easily be where
this guy had ended up.
"But all that is hindsight. Truth is, it was an entertaining and I
liked the part."
Hawke, 34, admits that he's begun to "daydream" and jot down notes for his
next novel (he's published two). And he recently finished up work on Lord Of
War, with Nicolas Cage, Jared Leto and Bridget Moynahan.
Andrew Niccol, who cast Hawke opposite Uma Thurman in 1997's Gattaca, wrote
and directed the tale of gun-runners in Africa.
"In a simplistic way, it's a portrait of the devil," says Hawke of the film,
slated for a mid-year release. "It answers the question: how do X million
people die in Rwanda and in the Congo and Sierra Leone? Well, somebody sells
them AK-47s.
From Sunny Oz, Rick :)
Proud Keeper of the talented & beautiful Halle Berry.
"Who is it that sells them? It's these guys that go to the poorest places in
the world and sell arms to both sides of a dispute and then leave town.
"It's kind of a fascinating expose."
Hawke, who plays a UN official in Lord Of War, is also looking to getting a
pet project, Billy Dead, off the ground.
"It's based on the novel by Lisa Reardon. It's a very dark, weird little
family drama ... I've been trying to get the movie made for years, but it
doesn't seem to be one that is really capturing the financiers' attention."

You might not think that a searing 1997 French movie about proletarian
unrest in Paris would have a lot in common with an American western such as
Howard Hawks's 1959 classic, Rio Bravo. In the end, though, they're both
about stand-offs.
That French film, Jean-Francois Richet's Crack City, pitted Gallic
blue-collar heroes against the privileged in the same way that John Wayne
faced down the powerful landowners in the Hawks film. That's how Richet came
to direct Assault on Precinct 13. Despite the director's nationality, the
film is otherwise an all-American reworking of the much-imitated Rio Bravo
scenario.
The new film wasn't the first time Hollywood has tried to re-animate the Rio
Bravo story with a contemporary twist. John Carpenter went there in 1976
with a movie also named Assault on Precinct 13.
In both the Precinct 13 movies, the action amounts to a last stand between
corrupt police brass and a beleaguered coalition of good cops and their
criminal charges.
In the new version, the bad police elite must kill a criminal (Laurence
Fishburne) before he exposes them in court. Fishburne forms an uneasy
alliance with the troubled station chief, Ethan Hawke, to fight them off.
"Because Jean-Francois is French I don't think he was particularly concerned
about being political correct and pulling his punches on hot-button American
issues like race or drugs," Fishburne says. "Which is why I think the film
is very honest and very unstinting."
The biggest change is the location: Carpenter's original was set in sunny
Los Angeles, while the new version takes place in wintry Detroit. Rio Bravo
takes place in a Texas.
The films even share substance-abuse issues. In Rio Bravo, Dean Martin is a
drunk. In the new film, John Leguizamo's character, Richter, is whacked out
on crystal meth.
"There's a big difference between someone on heroin, or even cocaine, and
someone on crystal meth," Leguizamo says. "They're much jumpier, tweakier on
crystal, so it was a matter of some pride to me that I got the specific drug
reaction down authentically."
Similarly, Hawke's character is seriously damaged goods. Jake has been sent
to the Siberia of Precinct 13 because of an undercover meth-dealing sting
that went badly wrong. He's in such a mess that his glamorous shrink from
police headquarters (Maria Bello) is at the station when all hell breaks
loose and she has to learn to shoot. Quickly.
Fishburne became the embodiment of big-screen altriusm after helping save
humanity as Morpheus in the three Matrix movies. Did he think it was time to
play another bad guy?
"I've played a lot of characters like him," Fishburne says. "I've done some
gangsters and I've done some cops, but I hadn't played this guy. And he's
the silent type. At the beginning everyone in the precinct is trying to
figure out what is going on and he's the only one who's got it figured out.
"Obviously, after The Matrix, it was a case of, 'OK, I did that. What's
next?' I mean, it's always like that, but more so this time. How do I change
it up? How do I keep it interesting for myself? Well, don't do the same old
shit again.
"You can't go looking for another one of those franchises. You only ever get
one of those. You get Stars Wars, you get Indiana Jones or get The Matrix.
I've had my franchise."
Assault of Precinct 13 was shot in Toronto because of the cheaper Canadian
dollar. It didn't help the budget either that the director was a relatively
unknown Frenchman.
"But you know what?" Fishburne says. "Anyone who saw Crack City would know
that Jean-Francois was going to be perfect for this job. This film is not an
art picture. It's an action movie. It's fun, kind of sexy and kind of cool."
Fishburne describes Crack City as "the angriest movie I had ever seen".
"And I thought, 'I don't know if this is a great movie. But I sure felt
something.' It certainly made me think that doing this one would be a trip."

Maria Bello eyes Cronenberg film
By JAM! Movies
Maria Bello ("The Cooler," "Secret Window") is currently in talks star
opposite Viggo Mortensen in the David Cronenberg-directed film "A History of
Violence," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie, an adaptation of the John Wagner and Vince Locke graphic novel,
tells the story of an average family that is thrust into the spotlight after
the father commits a seemingly vigilante-style self-defense murder at his
diner.
Bello would play the wife of Mortensen's character.
