Ok, I'll email Cher and tell her she should act like she's looking
bad.
She was made up for this part in W&G (long wig, heavy makeup
etc) to look like the doll that was part of the storyline earlier in
the show. If you've seen her elsewhere she really does look
stunning for a 60 year-old.
-
> Are you claiming she looks bad for someone who's almost 60 years old?
Absolutely! I've seen bongos that weren't stretched as tight. She can
barely move her mouth to talk, and her drag-queen frightwig has to be
superglued around her face to hide the scars.
I find nothing particularly loathesome about unaltered 60-year-olds,
and I have nothing against moderate facelifts. I don't even mind the
purposely-unnatural plastic surgery of Amanda Lepore and Jocelyn
Wildenstein. I jump off the bus, though, when aging upper-class women
don fright masks and act like they're looking good. (Luckily this
doesn't have to be a permanent state of affairs: Mary Tyler Moore and
Barbara Eden are closing in on human these days.)

That '70s Star Is a Rushing Bride
by Matt Webb Mitovich
Laura Prepon, who has played Donna on Fox's That '70s Show since its
1998 premiere, returns to the "present day" to headline Oxygen's
Romancing the Bride (premiering Dec. 3 at 8 pm/ET), a romantic comedy
in which an always-in-control bride-to-be embarks on a "Dude, Where's
My Car?"-type journey to piece together how she woke up in bed with —
and married to! — a hunky Latino stranger (played by Days of our Lives
alum Matt Cedeno; see related Q&A in Soaps News). TVGuide.com spoke
with Prepon about the inherent evil of wedding dresses, the potential
glory of furry pink handcuffs and the out-of-this-world joy of having
Princess Leia for a mom.
TVGuide.com: I really like you as a blonde. You have this Deborah Kara
Unger thing going on....
Laura Prepon: Aww, thanks, dude! I appreciate that. She's really
pretty!
TVGuide.com: You're in virtually every frame of this movie. How was
that for you?
Prepon: It was pretty intense. I haven't really done romantic comedy
outside of [That '70s Show], not that that is considered romantic
comedy. So to do a movie like this where you're the lead and you're
carrying the movie and it's not some crazy, dark, f---ed-up
independent movie like I usually go for was really great. It was also
challenging — imagine wearing a wedding dress in 100-degree weather
chasing someone in a parking lot!
TVGuide.com: Yeah, I truly felt for you. But at least you got a
wardrobe change about halfway through.
Prepon: The days that I got to get out of the dress were a godsend. In
between takes, there would literally be four people standing around me
holding up my dress and blowing a fan under me. I'd go up to the
director and say, "Did you see the beads of sweat rolling off my
face?!" At some points hair and makeup threw their arms up in the air
[and were like], "I don't know what to do!"
TVGuide.com: This is a cute, fun and sometimes very sexy movie — a
great fit for you. I could totally see you doing this in a feature
film.
Prepon: Thank you so much. I love my sitcom job so much — it's the
most amazing thing in the world and we have so much fun — and when I
[am on hiatus] I want to do dark, character-driven, dramatic stuff.
But then I had a realization going into the summer — when I was doing
this really dark, messed-up movie about these Canadian murders — that
I said, "OK, I don't need to do this to myself. It's so torturous." I
decided I want to do work that speaks to me. So I tell my friend, "I
want to do this amazing movie, Come Early Morning [which just made the
2006 Sundance Film Festival], with Ashley Judd, and then do a romantic
comedy outside the United States. The next day the for
Romancing the Bride was sitting on my doorstep! And then I got the
Judd movie. Every goal I had was accomplished!
TVGuide.com: Your bride is handcuffed to Matt Cedeno for a good part
of the film. Anything for your art, right?
Prepon: Yeah. [Laughs] It could definitely be worse. But this role was
kind of just meant to be, because the character was great for me and
Carrie Fisher [playing mother of the bride] was so funny, it kills me.
I don't think people realize what a brilliant woman she is.
TVGuide.com: Yeah, I looked for little Star Wars "in" jokes but didn't
see any.
Prepon: [Laughs] Oh my god, being around Princess Leia, people don't
know what to do. Even in Acapulco. They really don't. It's crazy.
TVGuide.com: When your day comes, might you be a "bridezilla"?
Prepon: Dude, I don't know. I'm not your typical "wanting to get
married" girl at all — and I've been with my boyfriend for seven
years. I wouldn't be a bridezilla, but I love entertaining and doing
Martha Stewart stuff. Whenever I do even a Christmas holiday, it's
like this huge thing where I get real garland the length of a football
field and I hang it all around. My friends always tell me to send
pictures to home-and-garden magazines because I love that stuff and I
go all out. I make little caramel apples and I put them in cellophane
with little tags that say "Merry Christmas from Chris and Laura."...
TVGuide.com: You should have gone on The Apprentice: Martha Stewart.
Prepon: Yeah, I know! That would have been hysterical.
TVGuide.com: We snarky entertainment reporters, of course, must
occasionally quip, "That '70s Show is still on the air?" Do you get
that a lot yourself, as a cast member?
Prepon: This year it's more of, "Wow, that's awesome, because you've
been going for so long." This is our eighth season. The thing that's
so crazy is it's really awesome this year. Ashton [Kutcher] did a
couple of episodes, Topher [Grace] just came back last week.... It's
like while we're shooting, Topher and Ashton are hanging out! It's
actually a really great year. We have different executive producers,
there are a bunch of new story lines, everything is fresh....
TVGuide.com: You have Mary Tyler Moore guest-starring down the
road....
Prepon: She's so amazing and funny, I can't even tell you. Seriously,
I love going to work every day. I really do. There are so many people
who claim, "After you're on a show for that many years, you're
fighting with people, blah-blah-blah." I like going to work every day.
TVGuide.com: Just no more Catholic schoolgirl outfits for Donna!
Prepon: Exactly! Burn that thing. Between that and the wedding
dress...
TVGuide.com: So this is not necessarily '70s Show's final season?
Prepon: People keep asking me and I actually have no idea. We're doing
well in the ratings and having a great time and we all still love it,
but I don't have the answer to that question.
TVGuide.com: You voiced a Marine in the video game Halo 2. So how good
are you at fragging?
Prepon: Well, the first Halo I was really good at — we'd have these
huge Halo parties where we'd connect four TVs at my house with
FireWire and have, like, 16 people going at once. I'm friends with
mostly guys, so they come over, I make them all food and we play Halo
and poker. My manager learned about it and told me about the audition
for Halo 2, and I was like, "Dude, that role is mine. There's not even
a choice!" And then I got it, and now more people talk to me about
Halo than the show. "Oh my god, you're the voice in Halo 2!" I'm like,
"Yeah, dude!"
TVGuide.com: Do you like your digital rendering?
Prepon: I do! She has red hair and green eyes. She's rad! F---ing
awesome!
TVGuide.com: You're a proud New Jersey native. Can you help the
governor with a new state slogan?
Prepon: I gotta think of something? I can't think like that right now.
I just woke up!
TVGuide.com: Well, recently, at the last minute, he scrapped launching
"New Jersey: We'll Win You Over."
Prepon: Aww, that's kind of cute! When I'm out here I get so much s---
for being from New Jersey. "Where you from?" "Jersey." "Oh, I'm
sorry." I'm like, "What?!" I kind of like that slogan. "We'll Win You
Over."
TVGuide.com: Hey, you won me over. That's a start!

Hey, Babs Kramer is dead, you know? Yep.
Sheree North was 72. Best known for playing Lou Grant's girlfriend on
'The Mary Tyler Moore Show', she also played Kramer's mother on
'Seinfeld'. She's dead. Another 'Seinfeld' alum kicks the bucket!

I forgot sanford.I remember watching it a couple of years ago and
realizing how un PC it was! Fred Sanford was really a bigot! He'd say
things about 'your chinaman friend' or make remarks about the hispanics,
etc. Imagine showing someone who is black and a bigot. It sure was a far
cry from the Cosby show!

Sheree North, 72, stage, film, TV star
SHE WAS KRAMER'S MOTHER ON `SEINFELD'
By Myrna Oliver
Los Angeles Times
LOS ANGELES - Sheree North, a platinum blond bombshell of
1950s musicals who is remembered by younger audiences for
her continuing television roles as Lou Grant's sultry
girlfriend on ``The Mary Tyler Moore Show'' and Kramer's
mother Babs on ``Seinfeld,'' has died. She was 72.
Ms. North, who had been in good health, died Friday at a Los
Angeles hospital of complications following surgery, said
her daughter, Dawn Bessire of Santa Monica.
Groomed as a studio glamour girl who could substitute for
the more famous but often unreliable Marilyn Monroe, Ms.
North was later interviewed or cast in documentaries and
shows about Monroe.
Hollywood insiders originally whispered that 20th Century
Fox hired her only as a threat to the troublesome Monroe --
whom she did replace in the 1955 ``How to Be Very, Very
Popular,'' in which she outdanced and outshone the leggy
Betty Grable.
Unlike other studio-styled blonds such as Jayne Mansfield or
Mamie Van Doren, Ms. North tried to change her bombshell
image, allowing herself to age gracefully, work without
makeup and segue into older character parts. She worked
steadily, enjoying a half-century career on stage,
television and in film. But she never quite shook the
initial image as a beauty, which she blamed on
studio-generated press coverage in the 1950s.
``Even today,'' she told the Los Angeles Times in 1983,
lamenting that she had been rejected for several dramatic
roles because of her looks, ``there's still the same
reaction when producers hear my name. They remember me as
the blond who was to have taken over from Marilyn Monroe.''
Born Dawn Bethel in Los Angeles on Jan. 17, 1933, she danced
as a youngster with USO shows during World War II.
She made her film debut in 1951 in ``Excuse My Dust,''
starring Red Skelton. But despite her first few films, she
became so discouraged about launching a show-business career
that she considered going to secretarial school.
When she appeared on the initial episode of ``The Bing
Crosby Show'' on television that same year, former Times
television critic Walter Ames noted: ``One of the surprises
of the show was Sheree North, the shapely dancer. No one had
given me an inkling that she could deliver comedy lines as
well as she did, but she more than held her own with Bing
and Jack Benny. Sheree came pretty close to walking off with
the show.''
After that, her film credits quickly rose to leading lady
status, as in the 1956 musical film ``The Best Things in
Life Are Free'' opposite Gordon MacRae and Dan Dailey.
Ms. North appeared on stage in such popular musicals as
``Can-Can,'' ``Irma La Douce'' and ``Bye Bye Birdie.'' Her
films include ``The Outfit'' with Robert Duvall in 1973,
``The Shootist'' starring John Wayne in 1976, and the 1991
thriller ``Defenseless'' with Barbara Hershey and Sam
Shepard.
But the actress probably gained her widest recognition on
television. She had guest roles in such top series as ``The
Virginian,'' ``The Fugitive,'' ``Cannon,'' ``McMillan and
Wife,'' ``Kojak,'' ``Hawaii Five-O,'' ``Fantasy Island'' and
``The Golden Girls.'' She earned Emmy nominations for
appearances on ``Marcus Welby, M.D.'' and ``Archie Bunker's
Place.''

Mary Tyler Moore Makes Stem Cell Appeal
Veteran actress Mary Tyler Moore has made an emotional appeal for US
senators to vote in favor of stem cell research for the benefit of those
stricken with diabetes. The screen star visited Washington, DC, on Tuesday
and, in her capacity as a chairperson of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation,
spoke before a Senate committee calling on them to pass legislation to ease
restrictions on stem cell research that many hope will one day lead to a
cure for the disease. As her voice trembled with emotion, she said, "As the
Senate debates and votes on this stem cell bill, I ask you to remember us.
Remember the stories we tell about injections and blood tests, about
seizures and blindness and kidney failure and heart attacks, amputations and
strokes." The 68-year-old actress was diagnosed with diabetes 40 years ago.

Since "Being Julia" just came out on DVD, there should be a few hundred
people here who have finally caught up with it. And, if they got
through it, maybe they'll have the same thoughts as me:
Is this the worst performance ever by an actress?
Now, I don't take statements like this lightly. I'm well aware of the
movie career of the alleged actress Madonna, in such turkeys as
"Shanghai Surprise" and "Swept Away." But Madonna bests Bening in at
least a couple areas: one, she can maintain a fake accent through a
two-hour film (heck, she's kept it up since she was twenty-four), and
two, her bad acting is so consistent that it appears almost natural.
A central theme in "Being Julia" is how love can affect one's acting.
The problem with Annette Bening as the actress protagonist, then, is
that she's a lousy actress all through it. When she's supposed to be
good she's lousy, and when she's supposed to be lousy she's, well,
still lousy. Towards the end Jeremy Irons angrily declares that her
onstage performance was the worst performance of her life -- and
everyone in the room turns and stares at each other, thinking, "Uh, has
he been *sleeping* through the last two hours?"
Finally, a couple questions. Ms. Bening fakes an English accent while
her love interest fakes an American one. Why would anybody try this?
Isn't this just a Razzie waiting to happen?
And last, Ms. Bening was virtually unrecognizable in the film, bearing
the same post-plastic surgery visage as Sharon Stone, Jessica Lange or
Mary Tyler Moore. How, then, could she be so bewrinkled that when she
declares she's 45 everyone in the room chokes on their popcorn?

The Simpsons make history with 350 shows
REUTERS[ WEDNESDAY, APRIL 27, 2005 12:23:18 AM]
You know that a show has been around a long time when they start measuring
milestones in episodic increments of 50. But it's understandable that The
Simpsons should want to make a big deal out of hitting 350 episodes with
this Sunday's installment.
As the legendary Fox series wraps up its 16th season, the denizens of
Springfield are wading in some uncharted prime-time waters. When executive
producer Al Jean boasts that The Simpsons "just enjoyed the best 16th season
of any comedy ever," that's because no other comedy has ever made it this
far.
How many episodes is 350? More than the combined total of Seinfeld and The
Mary Tyler Moore Show. The Simpsons will pass Dallas (357 episodes) on the
all-time series list before '05 is out. Then it takes aim at the only two
comedies to have produced more segments: My Three Sons at 380 episodes and
The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet at a somewhat astounding 435. Can The
Simpsons really make it to 435 - a feat that would require the show see a
20th season?
"You know, I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's really not out of the
question," Jean admits. "The cast is already signed through season 19. I
think we'll get at least that far. It required such a long negotiation to
get the cast under contract for four years that I think it's likely we'll do
them."
The show is renewed through a 17th season. The only conventional
entertainment show to run at least as many years was 20-year war horse
Gunsmoke, though it need also be noted, of course, that Law & Order is
nipping at the 'he Simpsons' heels as it looks to a 16th season come Fall.
"My best hope in the beginning was that maybe we'd be some kind of cult
thing like Fawlty Towers that would go for five years," admits Dan
Castellaneta, the voice of Homer and Grampa. "Now we're more than three
times that far."
People ask Castellaneta how this Tracey Ullman Show spinoff has survived
fickle tastes and prime-time comedy lulls and the dismissive industry tag of
being a mere cartoon? The usual explanations for its uncanny longevity
surround the fact that the characters never age and the magic of animation
allows the writers to go places where live-action could never tread.
"I have to say that it really does come down to the writing," he says. "I've
actually written a few s myself, and it's just amazing how much time
and effort goes into it. There are rewrites, rewrites of the rewrites,
tweaks. And there's no fear in the writers room. It's all about getting it
as good as it can possibly be."

- Leggy, brunette actress/dancer who is America's undisputed Sweetheart of Sitcoms, owing to lengthy stints on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" (1961-66) and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" (197077), which earned her five Emmy awards. Like her contemporary Carol Burnett, though, Moore has never enjoyed a note- worthy movie career. She was excellent as Julie Andrews' pal in Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967), spirited as the leading lady of such fluff as What's So Bad About Feeling Good? and Don't Just Stand There (both 1968), but unconvinc- ing as a nun opposite Elvis Presley in Change of Habit (1969). She showed real dramatic ability, however, as the frigid mother in Ordinary People (1980; earn- ing a Best Actress Oscar nomination), as the mother of a dying girl in Six Weeks (1982), and as the distraught wife in Just Between Friends (1986). She may ulti- mately be best remembered as the produc- er, along with ex-husband Grant Tinker, of many memorable TV series, includ- ing "Lou Grant," "Hill Street Blues," "St. Elsewhere," "The Bob Newhart Show," and "WKRP in Cincinnati." She also pro- duced the theatrical feature A Little Sex (1982). Her best acting opportunities have come in such well-received TV movies as Heartsounds (1984), Finnegan Begin Again (1985), Gore Vidal's Lincoln (1988, as Mary Todd Lincoln), and Stolen Babies (1993, an Emmy winner as the stern-faced head of an illegal adoption ring).
