Shirley MacLaine helps Aniston with press
By LOUIS B. HOBSON -- Calgary Sun
PASADENA -- Shirley MacLaine doesn't look like your typical NFL linebacker,
but boy can she run interference.
MacLaine co-stars with Jennifer Aniston in the holiday comedy Rumor Has It.
Though director Rob Reiner and co-star Mena Suvari flew solo for their
recent round of interviews to promote the flick, Aniston and MacLaine were
paired.
Aniston felt she needed the guidance of MacLaine, who is an old pro at
handling journalists, given the fascination paparazzi have with the former
Friends star's private life.
During the past year, Aniston has gone through a highly scrutinized divorce
from Brad Pitt and a whirlwind romance with Vince Vaughn, her co-star in the
2006 romantic comedy The Break Up.
Vaughn and Aniston were recently pulled over by Arizona police and given a
breathalyser test, and she is suing photographer Peter Brandt for snapping
pictures of her topless on the deck of her Los Angeles home.
There are also rumours Aniston plans to adopt a child and she burned her
wedding dress when she heard Pitt had filed to adopt Angelina Jolie's two
children.
Given all this gossip, it was only natural to start the interview session by
asking Aniston what her favourite rumour is these days.
Before Aniston could answer, MacLaine deflected the question by saying she'd
like to confirm a rumour.
"I'd like to confirm that Vince Vaughn prefers older women and that Jennifer
is just my beard. It was me in the car with Vince in Arizona and I was
looped.
"I'm having a ball and Jennifer is taking all the guff," said MacLaine,
defying anyone to pursue the question further.
So what about the adoption rumours?
"That's Brad's girlfriend," muttered Aniston under her breath before
tackling as many rumours as possible in one fell swoop.
"If we are to believe what's written in the gossip press, I've been married
five times and have at least 10 children. Trust me, if there is a wedding, a
child or an adoption you'll hear it first from the horse's mouth."
Aniston says she is "grateful to the legitimate press. Given what's been
going on in my life, they've been really great. They could have been a lot
meaner."
MacLaine says Aniston is being far too noble. "If I were Jennifer, I'd slug
most of you. Leave the girl alone.
"People are invading her privacy to an unconscionable level," says MacLaine,
referring to Brandt, who has topless photos of Aniston.
"He took pictures of Jennifer in her house from a very long distance using a
very big lens. She has every right to sue. You have to set a precedent."
Aniston feels it's because "there are so many new celebrity magazines out
there. They're desperate to fill their pages.
"I'm just grateful to poor Jessica Simpson for taking some of the heat off
me."
In Rumor Has It, Aniston plays Sarah Huttinger, a frustrated career girl who
discovers her family was the inspiration for The Graduate.
Not even Aniston can deny there are parallels between Sarah and herself.
"My life helped me play Sarah better. Because I've had to figure out so many
things in my own life, I was able to understand how Sarah felt about her
life."
Aniston says it was the film's references to The Graduate that enticed her.
"Though this is very much a romantic comedy, I loved The Graduate backdrop.
It was my first job after Friends and I felt like it was an easy step."
What proved to be a more difficult step especially for Aniston's more
die-hard Friends' fans was her psychological thriller Derailed, in which she
plays a seductive con artist.
"There's no question some of my fans had problems with that character, but I
have no regrets about doing the film. I'm so glad I did it.
"I love doing edgy films and I have a few more coming up."

That may be true, but just think -- do you really think that EVERY ONE who
Hollywood puts in a movie is thrilled with the industry?
It can be a crappy industry to work in unless you're shallow enough, or
greedy enough to try to make it work.
I'm not at all surprised that some actors don't want to continue, or say
the work is difficult, or whatever.

Mena Suvari Considers Retirement - Schwarzenegger Signs Sequels
October 12, 2005, 5:12:28
SUVARI TO RETIRE FROM ACTING
AMERICAN BEAUTY star MENA SUVARI is considering turning her back on her
acting career, because she doesn't find it mentally stimulating enough.
The 26-year-old star originally dreamed of an academic future in archaeology
or paleontology, but was lured into acting when her teenage modelling career
sky-rocketed.
And she is still optimistic she will realise her early dreams.
She says, "I just fell into acting. I don't have a strong desire to be an
actress my whole life - it's just not fulfilling enough for me. No offence
to those in the business, that's just me.
"If I hadn't got into modelling, I probably would have studied psychology
and might be working on a PhD right now.
"But it's not too late to go back to school. I've met people in their 50s
who just got their degrees.

http://jam.canoe.ca/Movies/Artists/K/Knightley_Keira/2005/10/09/1255234.html
Knightley is one busy lady these days
By ANN MARIE MCQUEEN -- Ottawa Sun
BEVERLY HILLS -- Keira Knightley is one in-demand 20-year-old.
The British actress was up all night shooting scenes for the second and
third Pirates of the Caribbean instalments, with just enough time for a
shower before meeting the press to talk about her newest movie, Domino.
With two cans of Red Bull in hand, the fetching and cheerful Knightley
describes her exhaustion while looking so fresh-faced one would think she
was in bed sleeping -- and not up swashbuckling -- all night.
"I was doing swordfighting and getting so tired I thought, 'I'm actually
going to wreck myself,' and didn't hurt myself at all," she said. "But then
when I got to the hotel this morning at 7, I fell out of the door of the car
and cracked my knee on the side of the pavement."
Knightley's career took off after she played a soccer player in 2002's Bend
It Like Beckham. In addition to the first Pirates, she went on to shoot
another half-dozen movies, including King Arthur, Love, Actually and, most
recently, The Jacket.
She had just four days off between her turn as Jane Austen heroine Elizabeth
Bennett in Pride and Prejudice and Domino. The 43-day shoot was scheduled
specifically so Knightley could squeeze it in.
Domino, which opens Friday, is inspired by real-life model-turned-bounty
hunter Domino Harvey. The 35-year-old daughter of famed British actor
Laurence Harvey died of an overdose in June while out on bail and under
house arrest pending trial on drug dealing charges.
Because she had so little time to prepare, Knightley was left wondering just
how she would morph into tough-as-nails Domino from refined and sensible
Bennett. Knightley said she was "freaking out" every time director Tony
Scott would call her on Pride to talk about Domino, finding herself for the
first time unable to wrap her head around the character.
"Then I was passing a hairdresser's and I thought, 'Right, this is how I'm
going to do it, I'm going to cut Lizzie Bennett out of my hair,' " she said.
Studied tapes
She talked to Harvey twice on the phone before she died, and studied taped
interviews and pictures. But lack of prep time and the film's fictional
elements meant Knightley framed Domino largely on her own.
"Actually, Tony said right at the beginning 'just make up your own
character,' so actually I based it on my best mate Bonnie because she was
around all the time when I was doing the other film and I could look at
her."
Knightley did cut her hair -- though she was sporting long, straight
extensions by the time it came to promote both movies -- and left Bennett
behind, big-time. Body-baring outfits, dark eye makeup and a permanent sneer
also helped her embody the gun-toting Harvey.
As Scott makes clear from words which flash across the screen during the
opening moments of Domino -- "based on a true story ... kind of" -- he has
not made a biopic.
After rejecting two more linear, realistic s as "boring," Scott tapped
screenwriter Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko) who conjured up the frenetic tale
while sitting in the U.S. Department of Motor Vehicles. A real-life
attendant named Lateesha (played by zaftig comedian Mo'Nique Imes-Jackson)
was his inspiration for the movie's outrageous plot-turning character.
The unlikely caper was then shot in Scott's signature jumpy, multiple-camera
format, featuring a large and bizarre cast. Mickey Rourke and newcomer Edgar
Ramirez round out Knightley's bounty team while dozens of real 18th Street
gang members stepped in for a tense stand-off scene in the movie;
Christopher Walken, Dabney Coleman, Lucy Liu and Mena Suvari all have small
but memorable parts.
Reality show hosts
To take Domino's fictionalized reality a step further, Beverly Hills 90210
graduates Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green turn up to play themselves as
hosts of a reality show named Bounty Squad.
Kelly, a fan of 90210, insisted the pair stay in the movie even when New
Line execs weren't convinced they were necessary.
Ziering jokes that when he got the , he asked his agent "How much am I
going to have to pay them to be in this movie?"
"It was the most random thing that could have happened, but it was something
I hoped for," says Green. "I figured if Tarantino was a fan of Travolta,
there's gotta be somebody that's doing well in this business that actually
liked 90210."
Though Harvey isn't here to comment, several reports from unnamed friends
since her death suggest she wasn't happy with the movie's liberties.
Scott scoffs at reports she felt sold out by the film, angry particularly at
its depiction of her as heterosexual. In life she had relationships with
women; on screen Knightley-as-Harvey goes topless for a steamy desert sex
scene with Venezuelan co-star Edgar Ramirez.
Domino doesn't touch on her drug problems or early death; Scott says again,
the movie is based on real people but is almost entirely fiction.
Scott says Harvey never saw the finished film but watched many sequences and
was there on the final day of shooting. "It's been misreported by the press,
saying she didn't like it and she's pissed off that we didn't represent it
in the right way," says Scott. "And everything she saw she loved."
Harvey also wrote and sang the track Heads You Lose, Tails You Die, which
plays at the beginning and end at the film. "That was her motto for
life,"said Scott.
As for rumours he shifted the film's opening date to capitalize on Harvey's
death, Scott says he only moved it up avoid competing with Knightley's Pride
release Nov. 18.
Domino Harvey's father became a major star after appearing in 1959's Room at
the Top and 1962's The Manchurian Candidate, but died when she was four. Her
mother Pauline Stone, a Vogue model played by Jacqueline Bisset in the
movie, later married Hard Rock Cafe chain owner Peter Morton.
Harvey was expelled from four different schools, dabbling in modelling,
acting, being a ranch hand and a firefighter before she found her niche:
Hunting down thieves, drug dealers and murderers for a Los Angeles bail bond
agency.
Scott says he became like a surrogate father to Harvey during a friendship
which started 12 years ago when he visited her at home on one of her many
bounty-hunting breaks. "Her mom wouldn't let her live in the house with guns
so she lived in an apartment above the garage. The apartment had AK-47s and
fatigues and Soldier of Fortune magazines," Scott recalled.
Like others in her circle, Scott worried about Harvey as she struggled with
addictions, in and out of rehab before her death.
"She lived a hard life," he said. "I wasn't surprised, but it still hurts."

instructor Jay Bulloch, a Sydney local who relocated to LA almost 10 years
ago.
Now he's brought Suvari home to meet his folks and show off the city.
The pair hit town this week and have shacked up at an exclusive city hotel
before heading north for a ten day retreat at an idyllic luxury resort.
And in fine Hollywood form, Bulloch is reportedly responsible for luring the
starlet away from her husband of five years, cinematographer Robert
Brinkmann.
Suvari filed for divorce from Brinkmann - 17 years her senior - only six
weeks ago, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.
She was spotted "making out" with Bulloch outside his apartment after a
lunch with friends, according to US media reports last week.
But Suvari's affair with the Aussie fitness guru - who is widely trained in
martial arts, healing practices and personal development - has quickly
escalated to the meet the family stage.
The pair met when Bulloch - who has several celebrity clients - was teaching
pilates at LA Body Kinetics.
"Jay is a very spiritual guy and believes in living life to the fullest," a
friend of Bulloch told Confidential.
"They are very much in love," the friend said yesterday.
Bulloch's sister Pepita, who works as a communications manager in Perth,
helped Bulloch and Savari to arrange their Down Under escape.
Over the coming week, they will spend $530 a night to stay at an exclusive
boutique resort in far North Queensland.
The couple will then return to Sydney for a few days before flying back to
LA in early July.

The American Beauty and a gay bar friend
by NICOLE LAMPERT, Daily Mail
08:34am 17th June 2005
As the blonde beauty who appeared naked but for a cloud of rose petals in
American Beauty, Mena Suvari will never have any problem attracting the
boys.
But a month after filing for divorce from her husband of five years, she
appears to have developed a preference for female company.
The 26-year-old actress, whose last role was as a gay art student in TV's
Six Feet Under, made a surprise appearance this week at a bar in Venice
Beach, Los Angeles.
And as she left with her arms around a short-haired woman, they seemed to
have struck up a close friendship.
After a career as a child model and a series of bit parts in movies, Miss
Suvari found recognition in the 1999 sex comedy American Pie.
A few months later she starred in American Beauty, as the schoolgirl object
of Kevin Spacey's middle-aged fantasies.
Off screen she then captured the heart of another older man, cinematographer
Robert Brinkmann, who is 17 years her senior.
The pair were believed to have a strong relationship and had only just
finished work on her latest movie, Standing Still.
But they announced last month that Miss Suvari was filing for divorce on the
grounds of irreconcilable differences.
The club she visited this week, The Brig, is said to be "one of the hottest
bars in Venice Beach".
A regular said: "Although it advertises itself as having a 'mixed' clientele
it is mainly known as a gay hangout. It is quite a weird place for such a
famous actress to be seen hanging out.
"Mena seemed to be very close with a short-haired blonde woman in the club.
"They were having a few drinks together and when they left they were arm in
arm."

NEW YORK - Mena Suvari has filed for divorce from cinematographer
Robert Brinkmann, her husband of five years. The report by Us Weekly
magazine was confirmed Wednesday by Suvari's publicist, Melissa Kates.
The statement said Suvari is claiming irreconcilable differences as the
basis for her divorce petition, filed Tuesday.
Us Weekly said the court papers were filed in Los Angeles.
Brinkmann, 43, and Suvari, 26, eloped in March 2000 just after the
actress had turned 21.
The couple met while working on the cheerleading comedy "Sugar &
Spice." They recently collaborated on the upcoming "Standing Still," a
film directed by Matthew Weiss.
Suvari's screen credits also include "American Beauty," two "American
Pie" films and "Beauty Shop."

Q & A with Brittany Murphy
By LOUIS B. HOBSON - Calgary Sun
Brittany Murphy did her sexy Maxim magazine photo shoot for her cousin and a
few other boys. Make that 40,000 other boys.
Murphy, 27, says she agreed to pose for Maxim on the condition the magazine
send 40,000 copies with a special message from her to the U.S. troops
stationed in Iraq. The star of such films as Clueless, Girl, Interrupted, 8
Mile and Robert Rodriguez's Sin City has a cousin serving in the Marines.
THE SUN: Are you comfortable with your body or do you feel just a little
exploited with some of the costumes you've worn in your films?
MURPHY: I'm proud to be a woman and femininity is an important part of my
greatest strengths and assets. It would be foolish to conceal my femininity
on the pretense of some false modesty.
THE SUN: What was your workout regime to get in shape for Sin City and the
skimpy costumes you had to wear?
MURPHY: None, absolutely none. Robert cast all of us, men and women, on what
we looked like before we started filming. He didn't require us to do any
special work or toning.
THE SUN: You look very lean and muscled.
MURPHY: Robert knows how to shoot women beautifully. He lights us in ways
that accentuate our assets and make us look so good. My breasts are not as
full as he makes them appear in Sin City. I love him for that.
THE SUN: You've joined a growing trend in Hollywood where blonds become
brunettes.
MURPHY: I wouldn't call myself a brunette. I'm just less blond than I've
been at other times and that was usually for a role that required it.
THE SUN: Both Renee Zellweger and Mena Suvari say they darkened their hair
to give them some anonymity. Does that work for you too?
MURPHY: I'm already anonymous. The paparazzi aren't interested in me thank
heaven.
THE SUN: You always seem to be laughing and joyous. What makes you so happy?
MURPHY: I'm happy to say I have many special people in my life but if you're
asking if I'm on the verge of getting engaged or married I can assure you
that's not about to happen any time soon

'Beauty Shop' an ugly, racist movie
Queen Latifah's considerable talents are wasted in this inept spin-off
By BRUCE KIRKLAND - Toronto Sun
PLOT: Queen Latifah moves from Chicago to Atlanta to set up a femme salon
with the same issues Ice Cube faced in the original movies.
Queen Latifah should be busted from royalty to commoner for Beauty Shop, an
ugly little movie that is an insult to its origins and a waste of the
Queen's considerable talents.
The flick is a spin-off from the Barbershop series, which starred Ice Cube
as the beleaguered proprieter of an historic barbershop in the heart of an
African-American community in Chicago. Despite the controversy they sparked,
these are sharp, funny and poignant films with cultural relevance.
Latifah made a guest appearance in Barbershop 2 to set up the spin-off. Here
she has moved to Atlanta, we presume to get a fresh setting for the
filmmakers. In the story, it is because of her piano prodigy daughter's
musical education.
As the movie begins, Latifah is growing frustrated with working in a
high-end salon owned by a flamboyant, ego-driven psycho (Kevin Bacon doing
an unholy cross between Mike Myers' pompous Dieter and a transsexual serial
killer).
She launches her own shop, an almost all-femme locale in a tougher but
friendlier African-American neighbourhood. The place is a dump but Latifah &
friends transform it into a welcoming place with a sense of style.
The beauty shop is populated with the same kinds of people and has many of
the same socio-political issues that haunted Ice Cube in the Barbershop
movies, apparently because the writers had no new ideas. But there is one
twist that leads to some of the worst passages in the flick.
Latifah's fame as a stylist attracts some of the rich-bitch clients she had
at Bacon's salon. Hence, Andie MacDowell and Mena Suvari make merry "in the
ghetto" by saying outrageously stupid things about black culture. MacDowell'
s character does it out of naivete, Suvari's out of mean racism.
Meanwhile, the only Caucasian stylist in the shop -- Alicia Silverstone's
character -- is a Southern white-trash, black babe wannabe. Get the picture?
The major white characters on screen, Bacon's sleazoid included, are racial
stereotypes.
This may be for so-called "humourous purposes" only. But I fail to see the
point of replacing 100 years of racial stereotyping of people of African
heritage with similarly creepy images of people of Caucasian heritage. In a
movie as inept as Bille Woodruff's Beauty Shop, it rings of revenge, not
satire.
The Barbershop films empowered themselves, with intelligence and wit, to
poke fun at all races and cultures. Characters debated the issues they
raised. There was context. In Beauty Shop, there are smart-ass jibes and no
context.
That brings us back to Queen Latifah. She has her first major on-screen
kiss -- with Djimon Hounsou, who provides the only reality-based acting in
the whole messy movie. Close the beauty shop, dump the stereotypes, get out
of the mire of racial polarization and make a romantic comedy about the two
of them. That could be worth watching.

Suvari joins 'Six Feet Under' cast
By JAM! Movies
"American Beauty" star Mena Suvari has signed on to do a six episode run
for the acclaimed HBO TV drama "Six Feet Under," according to the Hollywood
Reporter.
Suvari will play a student attending the same art school as Lauren Ambrose's
character Claire Fisher.
The role reunites her with Alan Ball, the Oscar-winning writer of "American
Beauty."
Suvari will next appear with Colin Firth in the upcoming indie film
"Trauma," set to premiere next month at the Sundance Film Festival
From Sunny Oz, Rick :)
Proud Keeper of the talented & beautiful Halle Berry.
-
>Wow, did she lose some weight. She's still gorgeous, but I liked her a
>little more zaftig.
She looks more like a very dark-haired Mena Suvari.
- Celebrity Gossip
- "It's nice W_hen people want your autograph, but it's a little strange because I never expected it. I still kind of think, 'Oh, who am I?'"
- Auditioned for the role of Mary Jane in Spider Man.
- Did her own singing in American Pie (1999).
- Mena and husband Robert Brinkmann have taken considerable flak because of their age differential - 16 years. Robert is a cinematographer.
- Her mother is of Greek descent.
- Declared as the most "patriotic" artist of 2000 by Entertainment Weekly magazine, making allusion to her 3 consecutive movies with the word "American" on their titles: American Pie (1999), American Beauty (1999) and American Virgin (2000). In 2001, she added American Pie 2 (2001) to that list.
- People Weekly magazine titled an article about her "All-American Girl" (1999).
- Mena was raised in a Rhode Island home that was built in 1870 and which she and her brothers believed was haunted. They saw several apparitions over the years, all of which she believed was friendly.
- Mother is a nurse; father is a psychiatrist.
- Has 3 older brothers, 2 of them in US army.
- First name "Mena", pronounced "MEE-nah".
- Last name "Suvari", pronounced "soo-VAHR-ee", is Estonian.
- Is a natural red-haired.
- Her first name came from an Egyptian godmother.
- Graduated from Providence High School in Burbank, California class of 1997.
- Smart, stylish, and probably older than you think, Mena Suvari is poised to become one of the busiest leading ladies of Generation Y. The petite actress inched her way into film, only to rocket into the spotlight with back-to-back performances in American Pie (1999) and American Beauty (1999). Now, with scripts pouring in and gossipmongers nipping at her heels, there's no going back to life as the girl next door.
Born in Newport, Rhode Island, and named after an Egyptian godmother, Suvari spent her early years in an old stone mansion that she insists was haunted. The family later relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, where her three older brothers lined up to attend the Citadel (a military college). Mena, meanwhile, was entertaining dreams of becoming an archaeologist, astronaut, or doctor. Her interests took a turn for the... less cerebral, however, W_hen a modeling agency stopped by her all-girls school to offer classes. At age 12, after receiving a few pointers on her runway strut, Suvari attended a modeling convention and was snapped up by the New York-based Wilhelmina agency. She commuted up and down the East Coast for two years before her parents, Candice (a nurse) and Ando (a retired psychiatrist), decided to move their budding starlet to California.
When she reached L.A., Suvari started in on TV work almost immediately--commercials at first, followed by guest appearances on "Boy Meets World" (1993), "ER" (1994), and "Chicago Hope" (1994). She launched her movie career in 1997, picking up small roles in Gregg Araki's Nowhere (1997) and the Morgan Freeman-Ashley Judd thriller Kiss the Girls (1997). She popped up again in the background of Slums of Beverly Hills (1998), then landed a slightly meatier role as the best friend of the telekinetic heroine in Rage: Carrie 2, The (1999).
Suvari's ticket to fame was the teen sex quest American Pie (1999), which cast her as a wholesome high-schooler who falls for a jock (Chris Klein). A few months later, she turned even more heads as the vampish cheerleader who captures Kevin Spacey's unwholesome imagination in American Beauty (1999). The sultry-but-fragile character earned Suvari a British Academy Award nomination, as well as a flurry of job offers and gushing fansites. In the midst of the hubbub surrounding the film, she slipped off with her boyfriend, cinematographer Robert Brinkmann, to tie the knot in a secret ceremony. The media was quick to point out the pair's 16-year age difference, but Suvari shrugged it off (her parents are separated by more than 20 years).
The in-demand actress completed her patriotic hat trick by starring in American Virgin (2000) (originally titled _Live Virgin_) as the daughter of a porn king. The title change wasn't enough of a boost to keep the mediocre movie afloat in theaters--after a brief New York run, it headed straight to video. Her next effort was another underperformer, but the aptly named Loser (2000) (a collegiate love story that reunited her with American Pie (1999)'s Jason Biggs) at least made it into suburban circulation--perhaps on the name recognition of its two young stars. Suvari kept her chin up, heading back to high school for the cheerleading/bank heist flick Sugar & Spice (2001) and joining the cast of the period film _Musketeer, The (2001)_ (qv).
