Kidman avoiding The Simpsons
March 30, 2006 - 5:18PM
Actress Nicole Kidman'>Nicole Kidman has refused invitations to make a guest appearance on
The Simpsons.
Photo: Reuters
Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Midler, Johnny Cash and Meryl Streep have all lent
their voices to The Simpsons.
But Aussie actor Nicole Kidman'>Nicole Kidman remains elusive to producers of the hit US
animated show, refusing invitations to make a guest appearance.
"We approached Nicole (Kidman) when we were looking for a celebrity couple
back when she was married to Tom Cruise," said executive producer Al Jean.
"Some way, sooner or later, we should be able to get her, though."
Just two Australians have appeared on the show, actor Mel Gibson and media
mogul Rupert Murdoch, both based in the United States.
New Zealander Sam Neill has also been on. Other celebrity guests to have
appeared include Elton John, Britney Spears, Reese Witherspoon, Lenny
Kravitz and Mick Jagger.
"It is amazingly popular in Australia and the UK, in some ways more popular
than in the US," Jean said.
The Simpsons premiered in January 1990 and was recently recommissioned for
an 18th and 19th season.
Producers have 371 episodes in the bag, with the 400th episode set to air in
the US in May 2007.
It is the longest running primetime animated series in history and the
longest running sitcom currently on primetime television.
The Simpsons - Bart, Lisa, Marge, Homer and Maggie - have an extremely loyal
fan base worldwide.
"The toughest thing in this show now is coming up with new story ideas,"
said Jean, who has worked on the show since the beginning.
"The key to me is coming up with a fresh idea that involves a family or some
political discussion that is interesting and we haven't done before.
"Once you do that, the rest of it fills in. Visual humour translates
everywhere."
The show's subject matter has frequently caused outrage, often tackling
cultural and religious subjects, or looking at a political issue such as gay
marriage.
But Jean said producers were careful not to be one-sided.
"We like to explore both sides of an issue," said Jean.
"We just sort of present the evidence and let people make up their own
minds."

In the first place, Jay Leno'>Jay Leno is first and foremost a 'comedian'.
His purpose is to make people laugh and IMO he over-relies on
stereotypical jokes about all people.
I have noticed though on his show he throws in the phrase 'not that
there is anything wrong with that' quite frequently when talking about
gays despite the jokes about them.

liberals are famous for ;)

True, but they're ridiculous only because heterosexual relationships
comprise the vast majority of Americans. Until gay unions overtake
straight ones (i.e., never) gay jokes will still amuse. Sorry.
But Leno can

Liberals shouting "bigotry" is akin to them surrendering (not to the
terrorists, which they've already done but to the argument). Better
luck next time.
Tough shit. Start being offended by actual problems and you might not
be so incredibly marginalized.
More people should *be* offended. The

Too bad gay jokes aren't necessarily homophobic. Try not to cry.

Wow, that was great. Wait a minute, no it wasn't. No wonder you despise
Leno's complete dominance over Letterman. Try to make your temper
tantrums at least semi-interesting in the future.

Once again, Jay Leno spewed his homophobic idiocy on television
viewers. In his endless series of sniggering jokes about "Brokeback
Mountain," last night he declared it should have been called "City
Lickers."
Now, this didn't particularly surprise me. Stupidity spews out of Leno
like candy from a pinata. But I'll take the opportunity to once again
discuss exactly why this idiot should be thrown off America television,
and profoundly apologize to the world while he goes.
Tom Hanks had a wife in "Saving Private Ryan." Did Leno ever dub that
film "You've Got Tail"?
Julie Andrews was married in "On Golden Pond." Did I miss the day Leno
referred to it as "Cherry Poppins"?
Kevin Costner romanced Joan Allen in "The Upside of Anger." Why didn't
Leno call it "Field of Reams"? Or how about "Lap Dances with Wolves"?
Kurt Russell got involved with Meryl Streep in "Silkwood." Did Mr.
Mentally Impaired call that film "Big Trouble in Little Vagina"?
Of course not, because these jokes are ridiculous. They imply that
heterosexual relationships are about nothing but sex. But Leno can
sure stereotype gay relationships, and you know how funny gay sex is to
prepubescent twelve-year-old boys. Rather than keeping his
shortcomings where they belong -- stuck in his undeveloped brain, or
shared with a helpful psychiatrist -- somehow Mr. Leno thinks it's okay
to air his bigotry with America.
It's not. People are offended. More people should *be* offended. The
fact that they've been desensitized to homophobia by Leno's repeated
jabs doesn't make it right.
You want to play with titles? Okay. Let's start calling his program
by a more apt name: "The Not Too Bright Show, starring Jay Leno."

NY POST..PAGE 6
STAR Jones didn't jump from E! - she was pushed.
Jones, who grated on the nerves of viewers and E! execs by continually
promoting her wedding last year, made her final appearance as the cable
channel's red carpet reporter at the Emmys this month.
The option in her contract for another year was not picked up. "One
year was enough," our insider said.
Jones claims the decision was hers, and told The Post last week she'll
be too busy promoting her book, "Shine: A Physical, Emotional, and
Spiritual Journey to Finding Love" (Collins), due out Jan. 6.
The tome is about her meeting and mating with hubby Al Reynolds.
"I couldn't make any commitments next year beyond supporting the book
and doing 'The View,' " Star said. "I want to make sure I do my
everyday job very well."
But PAGE SIX predicted her exit from E! months ago when execs groused
about her ratings and the way she pressured stars on the red carpet
into coming onto "The View."
"This has been in the works for a while," said one insider. "She just
didn't do well on the red carpet and E! is letting her blame the book,
but they were the ones telling her they wouldn't be picking up her
option."
The source then snickered, "Do you think Star would give up good money
and a load of freebies from the goody bags and the dresses for a book?
No way."
Meanwhile, another E! red carpet regular, fashionista Robert Verdi, was
noticeably absent from the E! Emmy pre-awards show - and he won't be
coming back either.
Verdi told PAGE SIX: "This is about a career segue for me. I've always
been very interested in acting. Recently there has been a lot of
interest and I want to strike while the iron is hot."
The fashion maven is said to be up for a part in "The Devil Wears
Prada" opposite Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.
The new E! red carpet team is Kathy Griffin - considered to be almost
as funny as Jones' predecessor, Joan Rivers'>Joan Rivers - plus Giuliana Depandi
and Carson Kressley.
The insider added: "If E! were smart, they would put Kathy on the red
carpet to interact with the celebs instead of on the bridge just
commenting on them. She is comedy gold and even if she upsets people
- so what? Joan Rivers'>Joan Rivers always p - - - ed people off, but they always
came back."
E! said: "Star was not fired and no decisions have been made as to the
next red carpet team."

Williams and Cosby Blast Bush Over Katrina Response
A series of celebrities including Robin Williams and Bill Cosby have
slammed Us President George W. Bush for his response to last month's
Hurricane Katrina. Speaking at New York's Higher Ground benefit on Saturday,
the outspoken stars - who also included Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte -
took the opportunity to criticize the Bush administration over its handling
of the catastrophe in America's Gulf Coast region. Good Morning Vietnam Star
Williams, who took the Lincoln Center stage pretending to be a hurricane,
told the crowd he was heading for Bush's home in Kennebunkport, Maine, to
"see if they respond any quicker". Veteran funnyman Cosby said, "The people
who got into office forgot about the people." Lethal Weapon actor Glover
said, "When the hurricane struck, it did not turn the region into a Third
World country - it revealed one," while crooner Belafonte added, "Katrina
was not unforeseeable. It was the result of a political structure that
abdicates its responsibility." Other stars who asked viewers of the
televised event to donate money to the hurricane relief fund included Robert
De Niro, Meryl Streep and Laurence Fishburne, while Bette Midler and Paul
Simon were among the performers.

She's a unique presence, but a pretty good actress.

Meryl is cast in WAY too many movies.

You know, I just don't know about her. Sometimes she is very good. She was
wonderful in Working Girl, Something Wild, and Another Day in Paradise.
God, she was good in that ADIP! However, she often takes stupid roles in
stupid movies, so that has given her acting ability a bad reputation.

I don't see anyone telling Meryl Streep to get a facelift or liposuction.

She says it's sad yet she still caved into peer pressure by altering
her face and body. It's not like it helped her career any. She might as
well just left her face to age gracefully.

Well that would be your problem in a nutshell. You're no Meryl Streep.

Melanie Griffith confesses ageing is "scary & humiliating"
August 30, 2005, 11:57:41
The 48-year-old actress, who started acting at the age of 18 in the 1975
film 'Night Moves', admits she has struggled to find work since she turned
40. .
She revealed: "It is weird to have been working in this business for 32
years and not get the jobs you used to get, or even the interviews and the
s.
.
"It is scary, sad, humiliating and weird." The blonde beauty, who is married
to actor Antonio Banderas, has branded Hollywood's obsession with age as
"sad". .
She said: "The whole thing is hard. I think it is unfortunate in the sense
that we get better as we get older - we get more interesting. It is sad that
whoever it is just wants to see a 20-year-old woman's face as opposed to a
40- or 50-year-old woman's heart, essence and brains." .
Melanie claims Meryl Streep is the only actress over 40 who doesn't find it
difficult getting work in Hollywood. She revealed to America's Entertainment
Tonight TV show: "I remember when I was in my late 20s and early 30s women
in their late 40s saying your career is over after 40. I thought, 'That
can't be true.' They are giving up, or they are not looking, but it pretty
much is true. Unless you are Meryl Streep, there are not a lot of
opportunities for women in their 40s."
- Celebrity Gossip
- Arguably the best actress working in American films today, this brilliant performer has mastered to an almost uncanny degree the skill of transforming herself into whatever character she portrays. She has accomplished this at the expense of establishing a clearly defined star persona, but her chameleonlike ability makes her the envy of her contemporaries. Setting her sights while just a schoolgirl, Streep studied theater arts at Vassar, Dartmouth, and Yale, appearing in an astounding number of productions (more than 40, according to some estimates) during her college and graduate school years. She descended upon the New York theatrical community like a whirlwind, first in off-Broadway shows (including those of legendary producer Joe Papp) and then on the Great White Way itself.
Streep made her screen debut in Julia (1977), taking a showy supporting role in that Jane Fonda starrer, and made a strong impression the same year in the TV movie The Deadliest Season and the highly rated miniseries "Holocaust" (1978, for which she won an Emmy). She then took the nominal female lead in The Deer Hunter (also 1978), picking up the first of nine Academy Award nominations. In 1979 she appeared in three films-The Seduction of Joe Tynan (her first "light" part, as a smart Southern belle), Manhattan and Kramer vs. Kramer (winning her first Oscar, for Best Supporting Actress, as Dustin Hoffman's troubled spouse)-firmly establishing herself with moviegoers. Her rise to fame was nothing short of meteoric.
One stunning performance followed another. Streep seldom appeared in heavy makeup, yet she looked different in each picture-and sounded different, too, going to great pains to master foreign accents and regional dialects. She won a second Oscar, now as Best Actress, for her portrayal of a Polish woman who survives Nazi persecution during World War 2 in Sophie's Choice (1982), and was nominated for her turns in The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981, appearing as both an actress and the Victorian character she plays), Silkwood (1983, her first workingclass character, a doomed factory employee), Out of Africa (1985, as Danish author Karen Blixen), Ironweed (1987, as Jack Nicholson's boozing partner and fellow vagrant), A Cry in the Dark (1988, as an Australian woman accused of murdering her own baby), and Postcards From the Edge (1990, as the weary actress overshadowed by her overbearing mother).
Ironically, Streep's majestic talent and versatility began to be seen as a liability. Journalists started complaining about her aloofness onscreen, the lack of warmth in her characters; writers even started making cracks about her penchant for dialects. So the actress began looking for ways to expand both her horizons-and her audience appeal. Her attempt to play a "normal" character opposite her male chameleon counterpart, Robert De Niro, in Falling in Love (1984) was sunk by a dull script. But her broad, comic turn as a narcissistic romance novelist in She-Devil (1989) took critics and moviegoers by surprise, and her gutsy vocalizing at the end of Postcards From the Edge revealed a strong, trained singing voice. (She was set at one point to play the title role in a film version of the musical "Evita" that sadly fell apart.)
Since then, a more "humanized" Streep has played genteel comedy with Albert Brooks in Defending Your Life (1991) and over-the-top farce opposite Goldie Hawn in Death Becomes Her (1992). In 1994 she tackled her first action film, The River Wild then starred opposite Clint Eastwood in The Bridges of Madison County (1995). Because Meryl Streep can do anything, and do it well, the only question is, what will she do next?
