Reese to top Julia as box-office queen
John Harlow in Los Angeles
February 27, 2006
HOLLYWOOD star Reese Witherspoon, frontrunner to win the best actress award
at this weekend's Oscars, is to push earnings for women in the film business
to record heights with her next movie.
Witherspoon, 29, impressed Academy members (who vote for the Oscar winners)
with her performance as country music star June Carter Cash in Walk the
Line.
Now she is producing and starring in Our Family Trouble, about a mother
fighting demons possessing her child in Witherspoon's native South.
Hollywood dealmakers predict that if the new film is even a moderate hit
next year, she will earn $US30 million ($40.5 million) -- putting her in the
same league as male stars such as Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey. In which case,
Witherspoon would overtake Julia Roberts, 38, the current box office queen,
who became the first woman to break into the "all boys club" of $US20million
pay packets with Erin Brockovich in 2000 and earned a record $US25 million
in 2003 for Mona Lisa Smile.
While Roberts's movie was marketed as an "inspirational" family film -- and
proved a box office disappointment -- Witherspoon is venturing into a
once-despised genre, the horror flick.
The actress has given little away about Our Family Trouble, which she wants
to film near her childhood haunts in Tennessee.
"It's about a young child in peril, which as a mother I can appreciate," she
said. "There is nothing scarier."
Laura Jean Reese Witherspoon, the daughter of a Louisiana surgeon, could
have become a scholar instead of a film star.
After excelling at Harpeth Hall, an exclusive all-girls school in Nashville,
Tennessee, she was accepted to study English literature at Stanford
University.
She put her studies on hold when, having earned pocket money in television
commercials from the age of seven, she was offered big roles in action
movies with Kiefer Sutherland and Mark Wahlberg. She went on to make her
mark in the critically acclaimed satires Pleasantville and Election, before
winning over the public in 2001 as a seemingly ditzy Beverly Hills girl at
Harvard in Legally Blonde. Witherspoon, who married fellow actor Ryan
Phillippe in 1999 and has two children, said that before Legally Blonde
Hollywood was biased against her in three ways: "I am discriminated against
because I'm a blonde, because I am an actress and because I'm from the
South."
Yet in Walk the Line she sang all the songs she had learned at Harpeth Hall
and relished reverting to her natural accent.
With Our Family Trouble, Witherspoon will move in a different direction
again, joining the growing number of big-name actresses to appear in a new
generation of "superior supernaturals" that have little in common with
low-budget slasher movies. Renee Zellweger is preparing to star in a remake
of The Eye, in which a woman can see the past after an optic transplant.
Italian actress Monica Bellucci is said to be in the running for a role in
Night Watch, a vampire blockbuster.
And 12-year-old Dakota Fanning, who starred with Cruise in War of the
Worlds, is under consideration to play the narrator in The Lovely Bones,
based on Alice Sebold's bestselling novel about a murdered child.

It wasn't so much her dancing, it was the fact that they paired her with a

Monica Bellucci. Exclusive Feature
November 26, 2005, 10:27:24
By Philip Hamilton.
With her voluptuous figure, Monica Bellucci makes a refreshing change from
the stick-thin Hollywood actresses who grace our screens these days.
Born in Italy in 1964, the stunning brunette - who married her husband of
four years, actor Vincent Cassel, after co-starring with him in the French
film 'L'Appartement' - has become a familiar face on the big screen after
moving from independent foreign films to mainstream blockbusters.
But though her smouldering beauty helped her break into acting - she was
offered a role in 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' by legendary director Francis Ford
Coppola after he spotted a photograph of her modelling - the Italian star is
determined to be recognised for more than her looks.
She recently said: "They look at me and think, 'Ha! Another model wants to
become an actress.' They can forgive your talent and your intelligence, but
they don't forgive beauty. If you're pretty, you have to be stupid."
Though her roles in the two 'Matrix' sequels and 'Asterix & Obelix' played
on her sex appeal, Monica - who trained to be a lawyer before trying her
luck as a model - has made several brave career choices to establish herself
as a credible actress.
In the controversial 'Irreversible', in which she also starred with her
husband Vincent, the actress appeared in what is probably the most violent
and shocking rape scene to hit cinema screens. Monica was at the centre of
further controversy when Mel Gibson's religious film, 'The Passion of the
Christ', in which she plays Mary Magdelene, was released.
** Article Continues Below **
** The Monica Belucci article continues now **
Among the criticism it received, the film was accused of being anti-Semitic,
but Monica was prepared to cause a stir, saying: "It was very controversial,
but that's good."
The beautiful star caused further controversy when she posed naked on the
front cover of Vanity Fair magazine while she was pregnant with her baby
daughter, Deva, who was born last September.
Monica stripped off and posed with one arm across her breasts and the other
cradling her baby bump in protest against restrictive laws regarding
fertility treatment in Italy. The laws, introduced last March, banned single
women, same-sex couples and women beyond normal child-bearing age from using
assisted fertility techniques.
The star spoke out in the magazine against the new legislation, which
effectively decides which women receive the treatment, saying: "Over here,
if you aren't married with all the proper rubber stamps, they stop you using
science to have a child."
However, Monica's actions sparked outrage from Catholic magazine La Voce,
which urged the actress to not address the issue with "lightness and
ready-made phrases."
Despite the criticism, Monica insisted she would not back down from her
position.
The 'Matrix' star - who once feared she was too busy with her career to have
children - also used the interview to speak about the prospect of becoming a
mother for the first time and confessed she got pregnant so her breasts
could "fulfil their destiny."
She explained: "I found it ridiculous that my breasts and stomach should
still be the same as they were when I was 18. Even though I had grown and
changed, my body had not. "I realised my breasts were not just made to fill
evening gowns. It was time for them to fulfil their destiny."
However, although she believes her body has changed since having baby Deva,
Monica looks as beautiful as ever in her new movie, 'The Brothers Grimm', in
which she plays the magical Mirror Queen. The film is directed by former
Monty Python member Terry Gilliam and stars Hollywood heartthrobs Matt Damon
and Heath Ledger.
In the film, the two actors play folklore collectors and con artists, Jake
and Will Grimm, who travel from village to village 'protecting' simple
townsfolk from enchanted creatures and performing fake exorcisms.
However, the two conmen are presented with a dilemma when they come
face-to-face with a real magical curse in a haunted forest and have to
summon all their courage and bravery to fight the real life terror.
Monica admits she was thrilled to get the opportunity to work with Gilliam -
whose previous films include 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', 'Twelve
Monkeys' and 'The Fisher King' - because she is amazed by his fantastical
imagination.
She said: "He has the same fantasies as a baby. In the film, we are in a
fantasy world, and I play an evil queen who casts a spell of immortality."
The brunette beauty admits she found Gilliam challenging as an actress, but
in a good way, because he was always prepared to change the and alter
scenes depending on what new ideas he had on the day of shooting.
She added: "Terry Gilliam is such a sweetheart, but crazy, in a good way.
"He creates this incredible fantasy, and you can't follow the with
him, because every morning can change everything. So you just have to be
ready, ready for improvisation, and ready to stretch yourself. But it's a
great experience for an actor."
Although 'The Brothers Grimm' has received a luke-warm response from
critics, British film fans have flocked to see the adventure flick and it
has further established Bellucci as one of the silver screen's most
beautiful actresses.
Whether she will ever want to become a full-time Hollywood starlet as
opposed her fans will have to just wait and see.
