NATALIE IMBRUGLIA: 'ELTON JOHN GAVE ME COURAGE FOR OPERATION'
Pop star NATALIE IMBRUGLIA was so terrified a throat operation would
permanently damage her voice, it took a phone call from SIR ELTON JOHN to
persuade her to go ahead with it.
The TORN singer had suffered for ten years with painful nodules, but feared
having them removed after hearing JULIE ANDREWS' voice had never recovered
following the same operation.
She says, "Everyone tells you the story of Julie Andrews. When she had her
nodules cut out it changed her voice for good. I was terrified it would
happen to me, so I just carried on putting up with the pain.
"Eventually I was with a voice coach and he called up Elton John when I was
there to tell him I was still agonising over the operation. Elton had it
done a few years ago. He got on the phone to me and shouted at me, 'What's
wrong with you? Just do it.'
"I took his advice and I'm so glad I did. My throat feels brand new."

Hugo's the victor in box office race
By David Dale
April 25, 2005
Australians may hate their own movies at the moment but they love their own
actors, as long as they're in movies made overseas.
An analysis of the most successful films ever shown here suggests that the
actor most likely to tempt Australians to the cinema is Hugo Weaving. His
box office total of $270 million - from the Lord of the Rings series, the
Matrix series, Priscilla and Babe - far exceeds the $175 million earned by
the top American, Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan and eight
others).
An analysis of the 270 films that have grossed more than $10 million at the
Australian box office appears in the News Review section of today's Herald.
Only 18 of the all-time hits are Australian-made (topped by Crocodile
Dundee, Babe and Moulin Rouge). But 54 have Australian-trained actors or
directors, such as Mel Gibson (What Women Want), Geoffrey Rush (Pirates of
the Caribbean), Peter Weir (The Truman Show), Bryan Brown (Cocktail),
Gillian Armstrong (The Piano), Nicole Kidman (The Others), Toni Collette
(The Sixth Sense), Hugh Jackman (X-Men), Eric Bana (Troy), Russell Crowe
(Gladiator), Natalie Imbruglia (Johnny English), and Olivia Newton-John
(Grease).
Based on box office totals, the 20 most bankable actors for Australian
audiences include three American women (Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Drew
Barrymore), three Englishmen (Orlando Bloom, Ian McKellen and Hugh Grant),
and three Australians or former Australians (Weaving, Gibson and Rush).
The most successful American men are Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy
and the less familiar Bill Paxton (who had significant roles in such hits as
Titanic, Twister, True Lies and Vertical Limit).

Natalie Imbruglia New Album Launched
April 4, 2005, 9:29:56
Natalie Imbruglia has launched of her first album for four years
Her new album titled counting Counting Down The Days has taken three years
to produce, most of that time deciding which tracks to include from hundreds
available.
"I tried to write this album in a year but it wasn't to be," she told
British newspaper The Sun.
The songs were a lot heavier, rockier and I decided to change direction and
do a more straightforward the in latter material are much better, there was
so much material discarded - at least 100 songs.
She went on to say that it had been her focus for the last three years and
as such was extremely important to her.
Ms Imbruglia attributes that happiness to her long-distance, relationship
with husband Daniel Johns, who still lives in Australia while the former
Neighbours actress is based in England.
The pair collaborated on most of the 12 tracks on Counting Down The Days,
which follows her 1997 album Left of the Middle, which peaked at No 5 in the
UK chart and the unsuccessful White Lilies Island in 2001.
Imbruglia said it was a pleasure working with Silverchair frontman Johns,
who wrote the track Satisfied, telling the Sun it was a spontaneous decision
and we had a great time.
Counting Days is released 4th April 2005

Aussie battler
March 14, 2005
Axed and ridiculed in its first year, Neighbours has gone on to become a
national institution. Michael Idato celebrates its 20th birthday.
Launched by the Seven Network on March 18, 1985, Neighbours struggled for
four months before a quiet, ignominious cancellation. In an extraordinary
move, Channel Ten bought the show, relaunching it to an indifferent audience
and sceptical critics.
But not only did Neighbours survive to tell the tale, this week it
celebrates its 20th year on air.
"Everything has to line up in the universe to get any TV show made, let
alone be successful," says executive producer Ric Pellizzeri.
"For that to happen twice, it is just extraordinary and when you're fighting
those odds it shouldn't surprise us that it's still here 20 years later."
At 4675 episodes (the 4676th airs tonight), it has become the
longest-running primetime soap in Australia, and the second-longest running
in the world, behind Britain's Coronation Street. It has been sold to 57
countries and while America has proven a nut too tough to crack, the show's
success in Britain is dizzying.
The story really begins not in 1985, but five years earlier when Seven
commissioned two drama pilots. The first, A Special Place, told the story of
an elderly woman who looked after street kids. The second, People Like Us,
was about five families living on the one street. Neither materialised, but
the second concept simmered on the backburner and resurfaced several years
later.
Conceived by Reg Watson, it was titled Neighbours and set in Erinsborough -
a fictional leafy outer-Melbourne suburb. Pin Oak Court in Melbourne's
Vermont South was chosen for the exteriors and rechristened Ramsay Street.
Although no one knew it at the time, a TV hit was born.
The original characters included plumber Max Ramsay (Francis Bell), after
whose family the street was named, his migrant wife Maria (Dasha Blahova)
and their sons Shane (Peter O'Brien) and Danny (David Clencie). Widower Jim
Robinson (Alan Dale) lived next door with his kids, Paul (Stefan Dennis),
Julie (Vikki Blanche), Scott (Darius Perkins) and Lucy (Kylie Flinker), and
mother-in-law Helen Daniels (Anne Haddy).
Neighbours drew immediate comparison to Coronation Street, though in style
and tone it borrowed more from Britain's Brookside and America's Knots
Landing, both set in cul-de-sacs.
The latter was the blueprint for a genre of suburban soaps that became
immensely popular in the late 1980s.
After four months, and cripplingly low ratings in Sydney, Neighbours was
cancelled and the sun set on Ramsay Street. The production company Grundy
Television, however, had discreetly pitched the series to other networks,
and Ten, keen to groom a prime-time drama hit, decided better the devil it
knew.
Guy Pearce and Craig McLachlan.
Neighbours was repackaged (and, in the case of Darius Perkins, who was
replaced with Jason Donovan as Scott Robinson, recast) and the production
moved to new digs at Ten's Melbourne studios in Nunawading. The race was on
to turn Neighbours from ugly duckling into glittering swan.
The show debuted on Ten in January 1986. By April, a tomboy called Charlene
(Kylie Minogue) had moved into the neighbourhood. Her first encounter with
Scott - she punched him in the face after mistaking him for a robber - gave
no hint that they would become one of Australian television's iconic
romances, on and off screen.
The show's salvation was a marketing blitz on a scale previously unseen in
Australia. Ten's director of publicity, Brian Walsh, one of the best
publicity stuntmen in Australia, toured the cast in the shopping centres of
every capital city, generating unprecedented frenzy on radio and in
afternoon newspapers. Neighbours mania was born.
Linda Walker, working on Neighbours in 1986 as a production assistant (she
is now the line producer, in charge of the day-to-day production), got her
first inkling of the show's popularity when normally subdued location shoots
started attracting crowds. Within months hundreds had turned to thousands
and she witnessed the kind of scenes normally associated with bands like the
Beatles.
"You can't believe the number of people who would surround buses and
trucks," she says.
"We were trying to get work done with all these screaming kids."
Stefan Dennis (who has just returned as Paul Robinson after an absence of 12
years) says he was mystified by the show's sudden success. "It was one of
those things that happened to come out of the bag, whether it was the right
place at the right time or the right smiling faces, who knows?"
The show's success in Britain, however, is easier to explain. Dennis
believes that Neighbours, like Home and Away, offered its British audience a
brighter, more colourful alternative to the traditionally grim situations of
their soap opera staples, Coronation Street and EastEnders. "They are quite
dour, heavy and suppressed shows, whereas Neighbours was more uplifting," he
says.
Neighbours' portrayal of an affluent white-bread suburban utopia doesn't sit
well with everyone. "You would struggle to find an Australian suburb that is
like Neighbours these days," says Andrew Mercado, author of Super Aussie
Soaps. "We live in a multicultural society, and our soaps don't really
reflect that." The show's one flirtation with multiculturalism, the Lim
family, was not a great success. The Hong Kong migrants were in and out of
the show within six weeks.
Overall, however, the success of the series over two decades speaks for
itself. After Donovan and Minogue left the series to pursue pop careers in
Britain, Guy Pearce, Craig McLachlan, Natalie Imbruglia, Daniel MacPherson,
Holly Valance and Delta Goodrem followed - though the series never quite
returned to those early heights.
The Nunawading site where Neighbours has been filmed for 19 of its 20 years
was sold to Global Television in 1994. Neighbours is still filmed there,
though the studio's heart beats a little more slowly.
"It's a bit of a ghost town compared to what it was in 1985," says Dennis,
sitting in the canteen, which is connected by a warren of corridors to the
cavernous soundstages that once housed such iconic TV series as Carson's Law
and Prisoner.
At 20, Neighbours is showing its age but there's no suggestion its days are
numbered. Its national audience hugs the 1 million mark, a respectable
audience for an early evening drama, although less than the current darling,
Seven's Home and Away.
The key to its ongoing success, says actress Jackie Woodburne, who plays
teacher Susan Kennedy, is tapping the show's, and the audience's, strong
sense of community. "It's a soap opera, so every story is a heightened
story, but at the heart of it are people who genuinely care about each
other," she says.
Pellizzeri agrees. "It is the need to belong, to be a part of a community,
the need to know you have Neighbours, friends, and acquaintances who will
support you," he says.
Ten has signed the series for at least three more years, and Pellizzeri
promises a year of onscreen fireworks, including a major storyline in June
to mark the anniversary featuring the return of several iconic characters.
"Neighbours is a relevant contemporary show," says Pellizzeri. "It's still
telling stories that are relevant to you and me, to people in this country
and the way they live their lives."

Buxom babes raise temperatures
By Natacha Butler and Toby Forage

From: NEWS.com.au
Bear hug ... Anna Nicole Smith gets to grips with Daniel Johns. Picture:
Renee Nowytarger
AMERICAN bombshells Carmen Electra and Anna Nicole Smith stole the show
last night at the inaugural Australia MTV Music Video awards in Sydney.
Former Playmate Anna Nicole sexed up proceedings by undoing her dress on
stage to reveal her generous chest emblazoned with two MTV logos.
The Texan model turned reality TV star was supposed to present Dissociatives
singer Daniel Johns with an award but instead jumped on him, and locked the
surprised star in a steamy hug.
Asked later how he felt to be tackled by the buxom blonde Daniel gallantly
declined to comment.
Earlier in the show former Baywatch babe Carmen Electra also caused a stir
when she performed a sexy striptease routine with some female dancers.
Carmen told NEWS.com.au on the red carpet she was looking forward to the
saucy performance.
"I'm not nervous at all, it'll be fun," she said.
The raised temperatures inside were a welcome contrast to the downpour
outside.
Some of the biggest stars in showbiz were forced to brave the rain at the
Luna Park venue.
Central Coast beauty Natalie Imbruglia joked that she may have been
responsible for the wild storm that circled the harbour, having jetted in
from her adopted country, England.
"I know it's terrible, isn't it?" she said.
"I must have brought it with me."
But fun-loving Anna Nicole didn't mind the rain one bit.
"I just love the rain," she gushed.
Dressed in a slinky hot-pink gown, the wealthy widow turned reality TV star
dazzled fans on the red carpet and even turned the heads of fellow
celebrities.
Home and Away star turned chart-topping cutie Tammin Sursok was in no doubt
about whom she had come to see.
"I can't wait to see Anna-Nicole Smith, actually," said Tammin, who looked
stunning in a red Nicola Finetti mini dress with feather trim.
"You know you see them on TV, but it's fun to see them in real life."
Carmen, who hosted the red carpet for the iconic music channel with rapper
Xzibit, was a fashion standout in a fitting jade Robert Cavalli gown.
The curvaceous beauty, who told reporters yesterday she was a AC/DC fan,
said she was also excited about seeing one of Australia's newest stars.
"I'm looking forward to seeing Missy Higgins," she said.
"I've heard so much about her and her record is coming out in the States
soon, and I can't wait to get my hands on it."
When it came to who the fans wanted to get to grips with, the biggest cheers
were again reserved for the Australian Idol stars - winners Guy Sebastian
and Casey Donovan as well as lucky losers Shannon Noll, Millsy, Paulini and
Anthony Calllea.
While the nation's favourite fro-bro opted for black and white '50s vintage
cool, he still found room for a little bling in the shape of a diamond
crucifix bracelet.
It was an understated fashion statement that may be catching, as US rappers
du jour Chingy and Ja Rule kept it real in basic outfits with only a glimpse
of glitter.

It seemed everyone was trying to keep abreast of things when American
celebrities Carmen Electra, Anna-Nicole Smith and the infamous Osbourne
family fronted media to promote MTV's first Australian music awards.
Former Playboy playmate Smith was happy to divulge that she sports a
32DD bra size these days and Ozzy Osbourne was quick to ham it up for
the cameras by giving his daughter Kelly an affectionate boob squeeze.
And ex-Baywatch babe Carmen Electra promised to get a few pulses racing
when she takes to the stage at the MTV Australia Video Music Awards at
Sydney's Luna Park tonight.
"I brought my whip. I brought my guard belt and my corset so I am ready
to go," Electra, who is married to musician David Navarro, is in
Australia to promote her Fit To Strip DVD series.
"I thought (the awards) would be a perfect opportunity to give a sexy
performance and ... get up on stage and dance because that is my true
passion."
Smith, who was last year escorted off the stage while presenting at the
American Music Awards, will present at the awards and offered to follow
Electra's lead.
"Y'all want me to strip, just let me know," she said.
The inaugural AVMAs are aimed at acknowledging the best in Australian
and international music in a variety of viewer-voted categories.
Nominated locals include Delta Goodrem, Jet, Spiderbait, Grinspoon, Pete
Murray, Guy Sebastian, JWess, Kylie Minogue and Powderfinger.
Winners in each category will be determined by viewer interaction via
SMS, email, fax and phone.
The Osbourne family - Ozzy, Sharon and kids Kelly and Jack - will host
the awards with Sharon saying she was a keen fan of Australian music.
"(Sydney band Thirsty Merc) are my new favourite band," she said.
"I shall have to go out to watch them (perform)."
When quizzed, Smith didn't have such a grasp of the local music scene.
"To be honest, I am not Australian," Smith said to laughter from the
media pack.
"But I did come here to learn."
Kelly Osbourne, who will perform at the awards, promised to be on her
best behaviour.
On her last trip Down Under, the singer was fined for underage drinking
and used obscenities to describe Natalie Imbruglia.
"We have seen each other since then and I have apologised for my rude
comment," she said today.
"I don't still have to generally think she's the best person in the
world but I will behave myself."
Other celebrity guests confirmed for tomorrow include Green Day, Simple
Plan, Missy Higgins, Ja Rule, The Dissociatives, Chingy, Xzibit, Eskimo
Joe, Keith Urban, Daniel Macpherson, Kelly Slater and Grinspoon.
The awards will be broadcast live on the MTV pay channel and
re-broadcast on the Ten Network on Friday night.
They will be shown on MTV's 42 different networks around the world,
giving the ceremony a potential audience of around one billion people.
Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson said it was a daunting thought that so
many people would be watching the band's performance.
"It is just a good opportunity for us obviously to hopefully get our
songs overseas and maybe get to play somewhere where other people who
have never heard our music before will get to respond to it," he said.

celebrities Carmen Electra, Anna-Nicole Smith and the infamous Osbourne
family fronted media to promote MTV's first Australian music awards.
Former Playboy playmate Smith was happy to divulge that she sports a 32DD
bra size these days and Ozzy Osbourne was quick to ham it up for the cameras
by giving his daughter Kelly an affectionate boob squeeze.
And ex-Baywatch babe Carmen Electra promised to get a few pulses racing when
she takes to the stage at the MTV Australia Video Music Awards (AVMA's) at
Sydney's Luna Park tonight.
"I brought my whip. I brought my guard belt and my corset so I am ready to
go," Electra, who is married to musician David Navarro, is in Australia to
promote her Fit To Strip DVD series.
"I thought (the awards) would be a perfect opportunity to give a sexy
performance and ... get up on stage and dance because that is my true
passion."
Smith, who was last year escorted off the stage while presenting at the
American Music Awards, will present at the AVMA's and offered to follow
Electra's lead.
"Y'all want me to strip, just let me know," she said.
The inaugural AVMA's are aimed at acknowledging the best in Australian and
international music in a variety of viewer-voted categories.
Nominated locals include Delta Goodrem, Jet, Spiderbait, Grinspoon, Pete
Murray, Guy Sebastian, JWess, Kylie Minogue and Powderfinger.
Winners in each category will be determined by viewer interaction via SMS,
email, fax and phone.
The Osbourne family - Ozzy, Sharon and kids Kelly and Jack - will host the
awards with Sharon saying she was a keen fan of Australian music.
"(Sydney band Thirsty Merc) are my new favourite band," she said.
"I shall have to go out to watch them (perform)."
When quizzed, Smith didn't have such a grasp of the local music scene.
"To be honest, I am not Australian," Smith said to laughter from the media
pack.
"But I did come here to learn."
Kelly Osbourne, who will perform at the awards, promised to be on her best
behaviour.
On her last trip Down Under, the singer was fined for underage drinking and
used obscenities to describe Natalie Imbruglia.
"We have seen each other since then and I have apologised for my rude
comment," she said today.
"I don't still have to generally think she's the best person in the world
but I will behave myself."
Other celebrity guests confirmed for tomorrow include Green Day, Simple
Plan, Missy Higgins, Ja Rule, The Dissociatives, Chingy, Xzibit, Eskimo Joe,
Keith Urban, Daniel Macpherson, Kelly Slater and Grinspoon.
The awards will be broadcast live on the MTV pay channel and re-broadcast on
the Ten Network on Friday night.
They will be shown on MTV's 42 different networks around the world, giving
the ceremony a potential audience of around one billion people.
Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson said it was a daunting thought that so many
people would be watching the band's performance.
"It is just a good opportunity for us obviously to hopefully get our songs
overseas and maybe get to play somewhere where other people who have never
heard our music before will get to respond to it," he said.

Couple tunes in to love
February 25, 2005
Natalie Imbruglia's third album is not only filled with loved-up songs about
husband Daniel Johns, but he's written a song for her and produced the title
track - an ode to the couple's long-distance relationship.
The couple shied away from making beautiful music together until Johns'
Dissociatives album, for which Imbruglia recorded Johns' voice - while he
was asleep - for the introduction to one track.
However, Johns not only wrote the retro pop Satisfied for his wife but, if
you listen hard enough, sings with her.
"It was the most comfortable I've ever been in the studio," Imbruglia says
of their teaming.
"It wasn't something we planned on doing or plan on doing again. I'm still
in shock that he was up for doing it.
"I feel extremely lucky because I'm in awe of his talent," she said.
"He's very brave as a producer. He doesn't over-think things. He just comes
up with really original ideas."
The title track Counting Down the Days - I can't deny that, I'm not very
cryptic - addresses Imbruglia and Johns' long-distance relationship and she
admits marriage has helped her writing.
"Marriage has freed me up, you can relax, you're content, you're emotionally
stable.
"It makes everything a little easier."
While the long distance relationship was hard at times, Imbruglia said Johns
had surprised her recently by visiting for her 30th birthday.
"Daniel came over to London. He turned up, so I had a small dinner,"
Imbruglia said.
While she missed Silverchair's re-formation for the Waveaid concert last
month, she said she agreed with media comments on how well Johns looked now,
considering his well-documented health problems in recent years.
"Yes, he's looking well these days," she said.

The end for Silverchair?
By Kathy McCabe
THE future of Silverchair is uncertain, with frontman Daniel Johns about to
launch his new band, The Dissociatives, with long-time collaborator Paul
Mac.
Johns and Mac release their debut single, Somewhere Down The Barrel, on
Monday and the song is expected to debut in the Top 10.
It is already one of the most played tracks on Australian radio and should
set up the album for a No. 1 debut in April.
Johns and Mac will also announce a June national tour with at least three
other musicians joining them.
"My biggest fear is people will see it (The Dissociatives) as a side
project," Johns said from his London home yesterday.
"It's so not a side project - it's a new band. "The last thing I want people
to do is say, 'Well, this is all well and good, but when's the next
Silverchair album?' It might not happen.
"The Dissociatives is mine and Paul's main focus, this is our band and our
baby. Hopefully we will do more and more of this because it has been a joy."
Mac and Johns first met in 1997 when the pop producer and artist remixed
Silverchair's Freak.
They have become good friends and continued working together, with Mac
playing piano on the band's last two albums, Neon Ballroom and Diorama, and
they also recorded an experimental EP called I Can't Believe It's Not Rock
in 2000.
Mac said they recorded the album in two weeks at the London home of Johns
and his wife, Natalie Imbruglia.
"We put a piano in the basement and just jammed for two weeks - that's all
the time we had," he said. "One of the songs was done a couple of years ago
when I was helping Daniel with the demos for Diorama."
The new sound has been complemented by a video featuring them as animated
Thunderbirds-style characters in a spaceship.
"There is a sense of humour in the songs - the same bent sense of humour we
share - and I think that's why the video works. We're not trying to be
cool," Mac said.
"I laugh every time I see it and I've seen it about 20 times now."
Silverchair members Ben Gillis and Chris Joannou are pursuing other projects
during the band's hiatus.
Joannou, who has already produced an EP for Sydney band The Mess Hall will
be undertaking more production work in the next year. Gillies is considering
some acting offers.
Their website carried a statement in October insisting "they are simply
taking a break for an indefinite period of time" as they did after finishing
the Neon Ballroom world tour.
"The band currently has no recording or touring plans but that certainly
doesn't mean that they won't ever record or tour again," the website post
stated.

The dangerous life of Lenny
August 10, 2004
The Sun-Herald
Survivor: Rock'n'roll can save, and destroy, says Lenny Kravitz.
Two years in the making and a birthday milestone later, this Kravitz album
reflects on a colourful past, Jane Rocca writes.
He's had 15 years in the spotlight and became a household name as a rock
musician who flirts with soul and funk not to mention legions of women.
Now Lenny Kravitz has turned 40. Not that he's too bothered either way.
"I don't necessarily look at my age and think 'Oh, it's a huge feat,' " said
the Miami-based musician, who celebrated his birthday earlier this year. "I
don't think turning 40 is a milestone just as I don't think turning 50 is. I
know people in their 70s who act younger than someone in their 20s. You know
what I mean? Age is an illusion, you know."
Kravitz might have a reputation as a hard-core rock'n'roller who lives life
to the full (to say the least) but the singer is also a parent to his
16-year-old daughter Zoe, who lives with him in Miami.
Zoe was born to Kravitz's former partner Lisa Bonet, who starred in The
Cosby Show all those years ago. Bonet and Kravitz met in 1986 and wed in Las
Vegas a year later. That relationship didn't last, with speculation Bonet
refused to put up with Kravitz's infidelities. But the singer cherishes his
daughter.
"I love my child, she is very special to me and it's great having her live
with me", he said by phone from the US. "You know being a parent teaches you
new responsibilities and I do raise my child well. I grew up a Christian and
I teach her the same Christian values. We're quite a spiritual family. I
believe in God and I do all I can to be a decent person."
Kravitz's new album, Baptism, is his first in two years and his seventh for
his career. The popular star has achieved multi-platinum status and won four
Grammy Awards.
Audiences first became aware of Kravitz with albums including 1989's Let
Love Rule and 1991's Mama Said (with the classic single It Ain't Over Til
It's Over) before his career went ballistic with his third album in 1993,
Are You Gonna Go My Way?. Songs such as Fly Away and American Woman made him
a superstar, not to mention the sex appeal of the singer himself. His
tattoos and piercings only added to the mystery of the
bad-boy-meets-a-sensitive-new-age-type.
Kravitz also became a cosy topic for the tabloids, having been associated
with women as diverse as Natalie Imbruglia to his more recent flame Nicole
Kidman in a relationship that ended last Christmas. "You know the paparazzi
can follow me around and see me at bars and hanging out with beautiful women
and make all sorts of assumptions but they don't really know anything about
the relationships and friendships I have with these people," he said.
On Baptism, Kravitz has written a range of songs which deal with the topic
of celebrity, including Minister Of Rock'N'Roll, where he sings: "Come to me
baby because I'm the star, but look out because life on this side is
dangerous."
"I'm just saying it how it is," Kravitz said. "Rock'n'roll can be a saviour
but it can destroy you as well." For someone who has seemingly always
relished the spotlight, he has another moment of doubt in I Don't Want To Be
A Star.
"There are days I wake up and think to myself I'd like to have a normal life
where nobody would recognise me," he said. "Sometimes being in the limelight
can be difficult because so much of you is put in the public eye."
Kravitz was born in Brooklyn to Sy Kravitz, a TV news producer, and Roxie
Roker an actor in the US television series The Jeffersons. His childhood was
divided between New York and Los Angeles and he said this album captured
stories about his life from the east coast to the west. There's no denying
it's been a colourful existence.
"I have experienced a lot in life and with this album I wanted to take a
moment to reflect on what has gone on in it," Kravitz said. "That included
childhood memories and teenage memories. But at the same time I am not being
nostalgic and teary-eyed about it. It's about a celebration. In many ways
making this record felt like I was making my first, there was a real sense
of purpose and new energy to it."
Kravitz said Baptism also salutes his mother, who died from cancer in 1995.
"She was a main strength in my life and as I get older and hopefully wiser I
can see the true value of loving those around you for a long time and the
need to respect and treat people well. I was privileged to be raised by
great parents and I miss my mother a lot but I also have to be a strong
person to carry my family on."
At 40, Kravitz is relatively content with his life having survived a
roller-coaster ride in the rock'n'roll industry but he's still searching for
a woman he can settle down with.
"I know I am a lucky person to be in this position but I have worked hard,"
he said. "I am an emotional guy. I dream of settling down now that I am 40,
but I am single and can only wait to see what my future holds from here on
in."

Lucky man: Kylie Minogue and actor Olivier Martinez.
Kylie Minogue speaks on her romantic Aussie holiday
Cameron Adams
14jan04
KYLIE Minogue has spoken about her romantic Australian holiday with her
French boyfriend Olivier Martinez.
Martinez flew into Australia to meet Minogue's parents and spent Christmas
and New Year's Eve at their Melbourne house.
"He loved it, he loves Australia," Minogue said yesterday.
Minogue, 35, has spent most of her two-week holiday having a quiet time in
Melbourne, and flies back to the UK today.
"I was so excited to be home (in Melbourne) I almost ran through
immigration," she said.
"I think Melbourne's looking amazing. It's really finding its place.
"I was driving through Melbourne, and I was one of the Federation Square
nay-sayers.
"The first time I saw it I was like, `Oh, no'.
"But when you drive past it that big entrance looks amazing.
"I'm dying to go inside Federation Square and have a look."
Minogue said she had acted as tour guide for her 37-year-old French movie
actor partner on a whirlwind trip around Australia that included Port
Douglas.
"It's difficult when you're trying to choose one place when you're trying to
show someone a bit of Australia," she said.
"We're so spoiled for choice. But it was a very good holiday. We even went
croc spotting.
"There's the half of me that's all glamorous then there's the other half
that's got Birkenstocks on and wants to get all dirty and grubby and pulls
eucalyptus leaves off the tree and sniffs them and thinks, `Ahh, I'm in
Australia'.
"They're the things you miss."
While Minogue was coy about her relationship with the Frenchman she was
happy to clear up persistent rumours, flatly denying she is pregnant,
engaged or that she caught the bouquet at Natalie Imbruglia's Queensland
wedding.
"I wasn't even at the wedding. I was in Melbourne," she said.
"I'd have to have very long arms. And apparently I made no effort, it just
landed plum in my lap!"
Minogue also laughed at reports that she and Martinez had split up.
"He's left (Australia) early because he's working on a film in Los Angeles,"
she said.
"We haven't split up. I can tell you with absolute joy that things are
great, we're happy.
"It's hard work to make the time to see each other but he's a wonderful
man."
Minogue also defended sales of her latest album Body Language, which have
been slower than her previous release Fever.
The album dropped out of the Australian and UK Top 20 soon after its
release, with many blaming the divisive reaction to No. 1 hit Slow for its
frosty reaction.
"Slow might have harmed sales but I think this album has a different life to
Fever, which came off the back of Can't Get You Out of My Head," Minogue
said.
"That's a different beast. And like different animals you have to work them
differently and people are going to respond differently to them.
"I could be getting criticism for just bringing out another album like the
last one; same songs, same everything.
"I like this album and it's early days."
Minogue says she remains undecided about whether she'll embark on an
Australian tour for Body Language this year, but is about to head to the
United States for the album's belated release next month.
Slow was the most-added song to American radio last week.
And Minogue will also appear on an episode of Queer Eye for the Straight
Guy.

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
Will Ross and Rachel finally live happily ever after?
That's the question that has had "Friends" fans on the edge of their seats β
until tonight, when the wildly popular sitcom goes off the air after 10 years
at the top of the ratings heap.
Will Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) talk Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) out of
moving to Paris, or will he decide to go with her?
Over the years, the hapless couple has had more ups and downs than a roller
coaster.
The ups:
1. After countless missed opportunities, they reveal their true feelings and
finally get together for the first time. 2. They tie the knot during a drunken
visit to Las Vegas. 3. They have a baby, Emma.
The downs:
1. Ross sleeps with another woman after an argument with Rachel because, as he
explains in what would become one of the show's most famous lines, "We were on
a break!" 2. They tie the knot during a drunken visit to Las Vegas β and it
is annulled. 3. He accidentally utters true love Rachel's name during his
wedding to Emily. 4. Rachel hooks up with Joey.
So here's to a happy ending for Ross and Rachel β and the stars who brought
them to life!
David Schwimmer
David Schwimmer gave "Friends" little chance of becoming a hit when he shot the
pilot.
The guy who made viewers root for Ross Eustace Geller thought he'd be lucky if
it even lasted until the end of the season.
"I had done some bad movies, a couple of small TV parts and a failed series,"
says the 37-year-old star. "So I figured this show was just a temporary thing.
"I was sleeping on a futon in a friend's living room for two months before the
pilot. I never thought it would be this big. In fact, none of us did. It was
instant chemistry."
Schwimmer was even more shocked that he became an unlikely sex symbol.
"I never felt good enough or good-looking enough there," he says of his days at
Beverly Hills High School, where he was the self-confessed class clown, always
in trouble.
"I was chubby and a nerd," he recalls.
While it was soon obvious the series had staying power, Ross' high-strung pet
monkey, Marcel, wasn't so lucky β he got the boot after the first season.
"Either the monkey goes or I do," Schwimmer told the producers, who wrote the
primate out by sending him off to the San Diego Zoo.
Schwimmer is often credited by his cast mates as the brains behind their
one-for-all, all-for-one approach to dealing with the brass, especially when it
came to salary negotiations.
"If some idea came down, like 'Will you guys do this one thing?' then, as a
group we would go in a room, privately talk about it, debate the pros and cons,
and then decide," Schwimmer says.
"Luckily, that stuck...
"But I didn't realize the power it would eventually wield us in terms of our
negotiations," adds the actor, whose parents are lawyers.
In the last two seasons of "Friends," each of the stars earned more than $1
million per episode.
On the show, Schwimmer's character made three trips to the altar, but in real
life, the actor is in no rush to wear a wedding ring.
"I believe love at first sight is possible, yes," Schwimmer says. "But for me,
real love takes a little more time."
During "Friends," he's had a string of romances, including with Australian
singer Natalie Imbruglia and Israeli actress Mili Avital.
Still, Schwimmer β who lives alone in an $8 million Georgian-style mansion in
Beverly Hills β has high hopes of finding Ms. Right.
"I think it will be the biggest decision of my entire life," he says of
settling down.
"My parents are still happily married, and that proves to me that it can last
forever.
"It's important for me to be a father, have a healthy family life and be happy.
I'm just an old-fashioned guy."
Schwimmer β who had a recurring role on last season's "Curb Your Enthusiasm"
β has starred in a string of film flops since shooting to fame in "Friends."
But he's hoping that will all change with his next movie "Duane Hopwood,"
co-starring Janeane Garofalo.
The 6-foot-2 actor will also be directing some episodes of the "Friends"
spinoff "Joey," starring Matt LeBlanc. And he's currently directing
"Americana," a pilot for NBC starring Alyson Hannigan.
Schwimmer's Favorite Episode: "The One With the Prom Video" (Season 2). "It's
the whole history of the origins of the relationship between Ross and Rachel,"
he says.
Jennifer Aniston
From the moment she was cast as reformed spoiled little rich girl Rachel,
Jennifer Aniston instantly hit it off with the actors who would become her best
"Friends." But she did have a few reservations about Matt LeBlanc.
"I always laugh at our past because I used to be terrified of him," says
Aniston. "He was leather, head to toe β one of those guys. And all you're
thinking is, 'Oh, he's going to try to get me into bed. I can just see it a
mile away.'
"Then he turned out to be the sweetest, most lovable man," she adds. "I just
love him. He's a brother."
When "Friends" first hit the air, Aniston β the daughter of legendary soap
star John Aniston β was hot and heavy with actor Tate Donovan, who now stars
on "The O.C."
They eventually split, but heartache turned to happiness when Aniston met and
fell in love with box-office heartthrob Brad Pitt, now 40.
Their July 2000 wedding sealed their status as a Hollywood supercouple, and
with her series behind her, they're focusing on having a baby.
"We're absolutely in the process," Aniston, 35, says of impending parenthood.
"It's where we're headed."
The one place they're not headed, at least for now, is a movie starring the two
of them. (Do Bennifer and "Gigli" ring any bells?)
"You look at past case studies of couples working together in films, and the
odds are really against us," Pitt says.
His wife echoes the sentiment: "We wouldn't want to go out there with
bull's-eyes on our heads."
For the time being, they'll have to settle for their memories of Pitt's
guest-starring role on "Friends."
In the Season 8 episode, "The One with the Rumor," Pitt played an old
high-school pal who shared a teenage weight problem with Monica. He wasn't
exactly a member of Rachel's fan club.
"We had so much fun doing that show, and it was fun for me to have him come
into my world and see what this was all about," Aniston says.
"And he so admired it, and it was great. But boy, I've never seen anybody so
nervous."
Another "Friends" memory she still can't get out of her head is the craze her
shaggy "Rachel" haircut sparked in 1994.
The irony, she says, is that her hair β which she describes as "too fuzzy,
too kinky" β "was always like a thorn in my side." Of the six "Friends"
stars, Aniston has had the most successful big-screen career, including the
recent hit comedy "Along Came Polly," with Ben Stiller.
Her per-flick asking price is reportedly expected to double from $5 million to
$10 million.
She hopes to continue that track record with two upcoming movies β a remake
of the 1966 British movie "Gambit" and a project inspired by the 1967 classic
"The Graduate."
In between, she'll continue to make time for her "Friends."
"Every single person in this cast is my family," she says.
"They're not leaving my life β there's just no way."
Aniston's Favorite Episode: "The One Where Rachel Has a Baby" (Season 8), which
she calls "powerful" and "just funny."

End looks near for Silverchair
Patrick O'Neil
12dec03
SILVERCHAIR may be on the brink of breaking up, with lead singer Daniel
Johns forming a new band.
Johns announced through his record company he had formed a new band with
Australian music stalwart Paul Mac that was "more than a side project".
The news almost certainly spells doom for Silverchair, which has sold more
than 770,000 albums in Australiaand won 10 record industry ARIA awards.
Johns' new project is titled The Dissociatives.
But Silverchair manager John Watson denied the split, saying the band was
merely in hiatus.
"The band are on a break and when Daniel has more songs, the band will
probably do another album. When that is going to happen, I can't say," he
said.
Mac has been helping out on Silverchair albums since 1997.
Silverchair formed in Newcastle in 1992. They were 15-year-olds when their
debut album Frogstomp became an international hit.
It is believed the Silverchair members have not seen each other since their
last concert in London on June 13.
Guitarist Chris Joannou lives on the NSW central coast with his girlfriend,
Superjesus frontwoman Sarah McLeod, and produces local band The Mess Hall.
Drummer Ben Gillies lectures on drumming at Newcastle TAFE and spends time
with his ballerina girlfriend.
Tensions have long been present between the members, with Johns and his band
mates coming together only when touring and recording.
The brooding lead singer prefers to spend time with pop star girlfriend
Natalie Imbruglia.
The couple became engaged in January and it is rumoured they will marry in
Newcastle on December 15.
The band's website, www.chairpage.com, states the band has no touring plans
in the foreseeable future.
A record industry insider agreed the situation looked ominous for the band.
Music writer Jeff Apter, who wrote the Silverchair biography Tomorrow Never
Knows, said the band members were moving in different directions.
"There has been terrible, potentially band-splitting kind of trouble behind
the scenes," he said.

LOL, Sponky...every time I watch a rerun of Neighbours, my spouse
always yells from his den, "Call me if my girl is onscreen!" I always
oblige. Once it was when "Flick" was at school, and she was wearing a
little uniform. I don't think the husband has ever quite really
recovered from that!
I really enjoy Neighbours...it's soooo bad, it's a helluva lotta fun
to watch. And the accents are so interesting to this Yankee who
studied liguistics in her college days.

"The band currently has no recording or touring plans but that certainly
doesn't mean that they won't ever record or tour again," the website post
stated.
