This is a two-fer. She gets to drop another item about her philanthropy
into the media flow, and she gets to yet again mention made-to-order
publicity accessory sonny boy in the news. Why can't she leave him out
of this spectacle instead of feeding her child into it? It's one thing
when the paparazzi's scoring shots of them, it's another to willfully
insert him into the whole public figure Jolie-discourse at every
opportunity.
It's actually a 3-fer, since she's also scoring some Wyclif demo tapes.

The Foo Fighters set a band sales record and Backstreet is
back--alright!--but nothing was as hot as Coldplay on this week's album
chart.
In its first week out, the Foo Fighters' In Your Honor sold nearly
311,000 copies--the biggest sales week ever for the Dave Grohl-fronted
group--but still finished 12,000 shy of Coldplay's X&Y, which extended
its chart-topping streak to a second week by moving 323,000 albums,
according to Nielsen SoundScan figures released Wednesday. It has now
sold more than 1 million copies in its first two weeks.
Led by the hit single "Best of You," In Your Honor, the fifth Foo
studio album since Grohl's Nirvana days, is a double album featuring
one disc of hard rock songs and another with more acoustic numbers. The
softer disc includes appearances by Norah Jones and violinist Petra
Haden.
In Your Honor's first-week sales more than doubled the Foos' previous
album, One by One. The new release topped the charts in Australia, New
Zealand and Sweden and was number two, behind Coldplay, in the U.K.,
Norway and Ireland. The band embarks on a European tour June 29 in
Moscow followed by a full-scale U.S. tour in September backed by Queens
of the Stone Age.
While the Foo Fighters and Coldplay battled for the top spot, the
Backstreet Boys fought to show they were still commercially viable
after three years apart. Their new Never Gone sold 291,000 copies to
open at three.
Historically, Never Gone doesn't come close to matching the group's
prior first weeks: 1.13 million copies for 1999's Millennium and then
record 1.6 million for 2000's Black & Blue. But those numbers reflect a
time when boy bands ruled the world. The group's previous release,
Hits: Chapter One, dropped just a year after the massive Black & Blue,
could only muster 197,000 in first-week sales sold for a number four
bow.
The new album, featuring the monster single "Incomplete," is proving to
be a worldwide hit, debuting at number one in Japan, Germany, India,
Chile and Korea and in the top 5 in Austria, Sweden, Switzerland,
Holland, Italy, Mexico and Brazil.
The Backstreet Boys, who have sold more than 73 million copies
worldwide--30 million in the U.S. alone, launch their tour July 22 in
West Palm Beach, Florida.
Wrapping up the week's Top 10 bows, Fat Joe's All or Nothing sold over
106,000 copies to open at number six. The Bronx-raised Latino rapper,
currently on the charts with his Nelly collaboration "Get It Poppin',"
responded to 50 Cent's diss track "Piggy Bank" with his own slam, "My
Fofo," on the new disc.
Country babe Erika Joe landed the week's next best bow as her
self-titled debut sold 36,000 copies at 27. The singer, who just
graduated from high school, was the winner of the USA Network's
Nashville Star talent-competition show, which crowned the singer champ
last April.
L.A. metalheads Static-X opened at 29 with their new disc Start A War
selling 35,000 discs, while As I Lay Dying accounted for 33,000 discs
as Shadows Are Security debuted at 35.
Other noteworthy debuts included Dwight Yoakam's Blame The Vain at
54, Dark New Day's Twelve Year Silence at 103, Patriotic Country Vol. 2
at 137, Funeral for a Friend's Hours at 139, Life of Agony's Broken
Valley at 147, Indigo Girls' Rarities at 159 and the Batman Begins
soundtrack at 170.
Meanwhile, in the wake of Michael Jackson's total acquittal, fans
celebrated by buying up enough Number Ones discs to put the album back
on the charts at 134.
Finally, over the singles chart, new American Idol champ Carrie
Underwood dominated the top spot selling nearly 130,000 copies of her
debut, "Inside Your Heaven." Runner-up Bo Bice will make his singles
chart debut next week with his own version of "Inside Your Heaven"
backed with "Vehicle."
Here's a rundown of the Top 10 albums for the week ended Sunday:
1. X&Y, Coldplay
2. In Your Honor, Foo Fighters
3. Never Gone, Backstreet Boys
4. The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey
5. Monkey Business, Black Eyed Peas
6. All or Nothing, Fat Joe
7. Honkytonk University, Toby Keith
8. Fijacion Oral, Vol. 1, Shakira
9. Love, Angel, Music, Baby, Gwen Stefani
10. Mezmerize, System of a Down

According to a message posted on Norah Jones's website,
norahjones.com, the Grammy-winning singer is in the early stages of her
next album. Jones and The Handsome Band have just completed an
exhausting world tour and are taking a breather, but bandmember Lee
Alexander posts that Jones has been "writing her butt off."
Jones said that writing songs does not come easily: "Writing is really
hard for me, and I haven't done it in a long time. I've only got a few
songs, so it's something I really want to work on. But I really prefer
the most simple song, the better. Those are my favorite songs. I mean,
there's certainly all kinds of great songs. But what I feel really
close to and what I feel like I could do the best -- if I ever get my
act together and get better at it -- is simple stuff."
Jones won three Grammys at this year's award ceremonies, one for Best
Female Pop Vocal Performance for the track "Sunrise," off her sophomore
album, Feels Like Home. The other two awards were for her work on the
Ray Charles album Genius Loves Company.
Jones' debut album, Come Away With Me, has sold over 10 million copies.

Norah Jones with the Handsome Band
Reviewed by Bernard Zuel
March 25, 2005
Chilled chanteuse ... Norah Jones was more relaxed than at the Sydney Opera
House in January 2003, but the Entertainment Centre didn't ring true to her
style.
Norah Jones with the Handsome Band
Entertainment Centre, March 22
Norah Jones could well be used as an argument by those who believe South
Sydney's move of home ground from the relatively boutique Aussie Stadium to
the vast stands at Homebush is a mistake.
Admittedly it's not clear whether Jones, who grew up in Texas, now lives in
New York and has not ever, as far as can be discerned, been involved with
Russell Crowe, has an opinion on this move by the Bunnies.
However, one of the main arguments for the move to Homebush is that the
ground operators will guarantee more money for the club and that makes sense
financially. One of the main arguments against the move is that the big
empty spaces of Homebush will be antithetical to the right atmosphere in
which to watch a small-scale club perform.
Now let's look at Norah Jones, who sells enough albums to make her a major
artist capable of demanding a hefty ticket price and to attract more than a
couple of thousand people to each show. Manager/promoter/Economics 101 logic
says bung her in the Entertainment Centre where we can put in six or seven
thousand people in one go and there's your Sydney show done and dusted.
Like any good economic theory it works mathematically. But is the
mathematics enough? When Jones was here in January 2003 she played at the
Opera House, a prestigious room certainly, but one where she looked dwarfed
and intimidated. She wasn't ready vocally, musically or in terms of stage
craft for a room of that size and that inherent atmosphere.
Two years on, Jones is more confident and talkative on stage, occasionally
leaving the comfort of the piano or organ to stand (and dance a little
awkwardly) while singing. Her voice is stronger too: still young and
deliberately kept in a narrow tonal range but undoubtedly pretty and warm,
and reaching a bit further into the room than last time.
Musically there's now a more pronounced, albeit occasional, nod to her great
love, the original country/roots/rock combiners the Band, with a couple of
full rock-band numbers where Lee Alexander's upright bass was swapped for an
electric bass, drummer Andrew Borger hit everything harder and guitarists
Robbie McIntosh and Adam Levy turned up the amps.
But the giveaway that we weren't really in the right place for this show was
the stage set-up, where the heavy red drapes and low-hanging lamp lights
were an attempt to create an enclosed atmosphere, a nightclub rather than an
arena. You could almost hear the invocation to "close your eyes and pretend.
Please".
The next sign was hardly unexpected: the distance between us and the singer,
which couldn't be bridged. Jones's songs, from Don't Know Why to Sunrise,
from Hoagy Carmichael's The Nearness Of You to Above Ground, written by
Borger and backing singer/flautist Daru Oda, are meant to be sung close.
Like her voice, they thrive on bringing you to them. Like her voice, they
don't take well to being asked to throw themselves to the back stalls.
Of course, it was still pretty and mellow and pleasant. These are nice
songs, sung nicely, performed with some skill, and Norah Jones may well be
the only person prettier than the former Souths junior Craig Wing.
But like watching the Bunnies play in an echoey Olympic stadium, watching
Jones in the Entertainment Centre is intimacy being trumped by expedience.
From Sunny Oz, Rick :)
Proud Keeper of the talented & beautiful Halle Berry.

Global music sales drop 1.3 percent
LONDON: Worldwide sales of recorded music declined 1.3 percent to $33.6
billion last year as the US market grew for the first time since 1999 and
consumers bought more concert and video DVDs.
The figures released on Tuesday, which reveal the fifth straight year of
falling sales for the record industry, do not include digital downloads or
mobile phone ringtones, which music companies say would have made 2004 sales
flat against 2003.
Global compact disc sales, still one of the most closely watched numbers to
discern the health of the industry, were down 0.9 percent from a year ago
compared with a 9.1 percent drop in 2003, according to the trade group
International Federation for the Phonographic Industry.
Music sales around the world have been slammed by rampant CD piracy, illegal
downloading, poor economic conditions and stiff competition from video
games.
The global 1.3 percent fall was the slowest rate of decline in five years,
and the industry remains hopeful that some badly hurt countries have turned
a corner and that legal efforts to stop the stealing are finally working.
Recorded music sales in the United States, which accounts for about 36
percent of the world total, increased 2.3 percent. Europe struggled again,
with France falling 14.8 percent, Spain 12.5 percent, Germany 4.2 percent
and Britain 1.6 percent. Sales in Japan were down 1.8 percent, a shallower
decline than in recent years, and Latin America benefited from an economic
rebound to generate 12.6 percent growth in 2004.
Some encouragement: "There's some encouragement that the market that
suffered the most - Germany - is bullish about the future," IFPI Chairman
and Chief Executive John Kennedy said in an interview.
"Places like France also have suffered in the last couple of years, and they
're coming to terms with what they have to do, and we've seen some good
signs there for downloads," he added. "Let's hope the worst is over."
He said he expects global sales to be flat in 2005. The IFPI said the number
of tracks downloaded surged to more than 200 million in the four biggest
markets - the United States, Britain, France and Germany - a tenfold
increase from 2003. There is not enough solid global data yet, however.
"It's a very inaccurate process at the moment," Kennedy said. "Nobody seems
to have very precise figures for the year at this stage." Albums from Usher,
Norah Jones, Eminem and Green Day were among the year's best sellers,
helping the four music majors - Vivendi's Universal Music, Sony BMG, EMI
Group and Warner Music - to dominate the market with only two of the top 50
albums from independent record companies.
Sony BMG and Universal combined to account for about two-thirds of the top
50. Eight albums sold more than 5 million copies in 2004, including Usher's
"Confes-sions" and U2's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," compared with
five in 2003. Sales of music DVDs including Live Aid and a greatest hits
compilation from Britney Spears rose 23 percent last year to $2.6
billion. -Reuters

Another example of this that I find astounding -- although not directly
related to Hollywood -- is that Norah Jones' father is Ravi Shankar of
Woodstock fame (the sitar player). Evidently, he was not a part of her
upbringing.

Foo Fighters Team Up With Norah Jones
February 25, 2005, 6:37:51 FOO FIGHTERS MAKE SWEET MUSIC WITH NORAH JONES
The FOO FIGHTERS have baffled their hard rocking fans by recruiting
mainstream jazz star NORAH JONES to sing on their upcoming double album.
The DAVE GROHL-fronted band intend to demonstrate the full range of their
talents on the two-disc offering - one will be filled with soft, acoustic
compositions, while the other will mirror the heavy, distorted sounds that
launched them to fame.
And the MONKEY WRENCH quartet deemed Jones the ideal contributor to their
easy listening set.
Meanwhile, legendary LED ZEPPELIN bassist JOHN PAUL JONES' help was enlisted
for the rock disc.
Foo Fighters guitarist CHRIS SHIFLETT says, "John Paul Jones was so down-to-
earth and cool, it was incredible.
"We've recorded a lot of music for this record, more than 40 songs or
versions of songs. That'll get narrowed down to about half of that number
for the final track list."

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Ray Charles is already an R&B institution. Now his
recording studio, RPM International, is a Los Angeles landmark.
The dedication ceremony for "historic cultural monument No. 776" took place
April 30.
"Thank you all from my heart," Charles told the audience. "I'm a little weak
now, but I'll get stronger."
The singer/songwriter/producer, who is recovering from hip surgery, had to be
helped to the podium. Known for his constant touring, Charles hasn't performed
for a year.
Among those participating in the ceremony were Charles' longtime manager, Joe
Adams, and Clint Eastwood.
Eastwood, who called Charles "an idol of mine," worked with the artist on
"Piano Blues," the installment he directed for the PBS miniseries "The Blues."
Additional guests included L.A. mayor James Hahn, actress Cicely Tyson and
biographer David Ritz.
RPM International was designed and built by Charles and Adams in 1964. The
South Central facility served as a recording site for Johnny Cash and Quincy
Jones, among others.
A collection of duets pairing Charles with Norah Jones, Michael McDonald and
others was announced in April. The aptly titled "Genius Loves Company" is
slated for release Aug. 31.
The collection is the inaugural project of a partnership between Concord
Records and Starbucks' Hear Music brand.

The Anti-Hit List
BY JOHN SAKAMOTO
10. JULIAN COPE, "Dance by the Light of the Bridges You Burn" : Since
parting ways with the world of major labels, the ex-Teardrop Explodes
mainstay has made some of the most distinctive psychedelic hard rock ever
recorded. In this ode to late British archaeologist T.C. Lethbridge -- who
was ostracized for positing a theory that rooms or places could record
information about their own history, as manifested in ghosts and ghouls --
Cope finds the perfect subject matter for his musical proclivities. (From
Rome Wasn't Burned in a Day ,www.juliancope.com )
9. ROGER McGUINN, "Rock and Roll Time" : The fact that the former Byrd
sounds more like himself on this 1974 outtake than he does on any of the 10
songs that originally comprised his second solo album speaks volumes about
the consequences of ceding your creative identity to an outsider, in this
case Crosby, Stills & Nash compatriot Bill Halverson; co-written with
Jacques Levy, who would soon go on to collaborate on Dylan's Desire . (From
Peace on You ,www.sundazed.com )
8. DAVID KITT, "Sweet Summer Morning" : Though his parched vocals may be too
conversational for fans of David Gray and Damien Rice, this plain-spoken
Irishman has a knack for taking the quotidian and making it seem like a mere
cover for something more ominous. This Valentine's card of a ballad starts
out as a pastoral declaration of love but is gradually overtaken by a
progressively distorted wave of feedback . (From Square 1
,www.davidkitt.com/music/square.html )
7. JOE JACKSON, "IN 20-0-3" : Guaranteed to infuriate a wide swath of the
population, Jackson jauntily dons his contrarian's hat for a download-only
screed against the smoking ban in New York bars. Citing the example of a man
who ate himself to death, he agitates as follows: "So they issue more
warnings / But they didn't ban eating / And they don't ban potatoes or
grease.... So do what you want / You can live just on lard / But in 20-0-3,
you can't smoke in a bar." Refreshingly argumentative. ( www.joejackson.com
)
6. BLONDIE VS. THE DOORS, "Rapture Riders" : A gloriously incongruous
mash-up of the former's "Rapture" with the latter's "Riders on the Storm,"
of all things. Part of a four-track download that also pairs up ABBA and The
Beatles, Queen and The Beatles, and The Beach Boys and Paul McCartney. Get
it while you can. (From Rapture Riders EP
,www.gohomeproductions.co.uk/allendean.html )
5. LORI CULLEN, "Wide Eyed and Sleepy" : The Toronto singer-songwriter's
follow-up to Garden Path subtly expands on that album's luminous
instrumental textures while making them seem even more like natural
extensions of her eyes-closed vocals. This is one of those pieces of music
that can instantly transform the glare of broad daylight into the eerie glow
of nightfall. (From Uneven Hill ,www.loricullen.com )
4. GREG ASHLEY, "Karen Loves Kandy" : The occasionally glib comparisons this
Oakland original has drawn to troubled souls Syd Barrett and Roky Erickson
seem to relate solely to his childlike wordplay, with "Sugar sugar sugar
sugar son / Karen loved kandy, we loved fun" being a typical example. Unlike
those prototypical outsiders, however, there's not so much as an intimation
that Ashley is truly out of control, just darkly and entertainingly jilted.
(From Medicine Fuck Dream ,www.birdmanrecords.com )
3. CORAL EGAN, "Breathe" : On which the Quebec jazz vocalist taps into her
inner Joni Mitchell -- musically, if not lyrically -- and creates as
evocative and ambitious a piece of music as anything that has borne the
crushing weight of that comparison. (From My Favourite Distraction
,www.fusion3.com )
2. GUIDED BY VOICES & JULIAN CASABLANCAS, "Glad Girls" (live) : An
absolutely joyful rip through the GBV track from Isolation Drills that makes
you realize just how potent a band The Strokes could be if they consistently
had access to material as kick-ass as this. (From the net)
1. ZERO 7, "Home" : The first taste of the follow-up to Simple Things is
four and a half minutes of impeccably arranged atmospheric pop, graced with
mesmerizing vocals by new singer Tina Dico. Perfect for those partial to Air
and the Another Late Night compilation series -- and those who hate
themselves for secretly being drawn to Norah Jones. (From When it Falls
,www.zero7.co.uk )
Hugs,
Janice, notin' you can DL the uber-fantabulous "Glad Girls" (it *will* get
you high) here------>
