LA says g'day
From: AAP By Peter Mitchell in Los Angeles
January 06, 2006
LOS Angeles is enjoying an Australiana makeover.
Australian stars such as Olivia Newton-John and Hugh Jackman will be
honoured in Tinseltown over the next two weeks while AFL clubs the Sydney
Swans and the Kangaroos will show Angelenos how to play a tough contact
sport without helmets and pads.
And LA residents venturing to their local supermarkets will be inundated
with Australian fare.
Shoppers entering LA's 11 Bristol Farms supermarkets - which cater to LA's
high rollers and celebrities such as Madonna, Leonardo DiCaprio and Debra
Messing - will be confronted with Australian flags, stuffed koalas,
Australian made products and the mouthwatering smell of Aussie beef and lamb
barbecuing.
At Bristol Farms' flagship Beverly Hills store a giant shopping trolley with
a big, smiling photo of America's favourite khaki clad Aussie, Steve, The
Crocodile Hunter, Irwin, welcomes shoppers as they enter.
It is all part of the third annual G'Day LA: Australia Week festival which
runs from January 14-22 and is designed to promote Australian business,
film, arts, fashion, tourism, food, wine and sport.
Last year's G'day event led to Australian businesses, including food and
wine producers, striking $5 million in export deals with US companies.
"The Australia Week event has become a phenomenal venue for Australia to
showcase its unique products and generate new business," Austrade's Senior
Trade Commissioner in Los Angeles, Kylie Hargreaves, told AAP.
"Each year it just gets bigger and better." The glamour event is the
Penfolds Icon Black Tie Gala, which each year celebrates Australia's
Hollywood achievers. Last year Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban and Mel Gibson
were honoured and in 2004 Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann and Anthony LaPaglia
were given the royal treatment.
On January 14 at the historic Hollywood Palladium - a favourite venue for
Frank Sinatra in his early days - Newton-John and Jackman will receive
awards. The event will be packed with Australia's biggest stars and some of
Hollywood's, with John Travolta presenting his Grease co-star and good
friend, Newton-John, with her award.
Australian celebrity chef Neil Perry will feed the A-list crowd with
Australian produce flown in for the night.
One of America's great academic and sporting institutions, UCLA, will be
taken over by Australians on January 15 with the Wolf Blass Aussie Festival.
On one of UCLA's sporting fields, the Swans and Kangaroos will play an AFL
sanctioned exhibition game.
Inside UCLA's Pauley Pavillion, which will be filled with Australian
products and entertainment, Crocodile Hunter Irwin will put on a
performance.
"The events are designed to promote almost every aspect of Australian
culture," Hargreaves said.
Other events planned include the Travel + Leisure CEO golf event hosted by
Ian Baker Finch, the AusFilm Industry Breakfast, the Rosemount Estate Film
Premiere at Hollywood's Paramount Studios and the Australian Designer
Showcase, which will promote clothing and jewellery companies.
An Energy and Security Forum will also be staged to discuss energy security
issues in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Food and Beverage Trade Day on January 20 will showcase 70 Australian
food and wine producers.
Representatives from major US supermarkets, hotels and stores have been
invited to sample the products.
G'Day LA: Australia Week 2006 is produced by the Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade, Tourism Australia, Australian Trade Commission and Qantas
Airways in conjunction with State Governments and key private sector
sponsors.

Olivia breaks her silence
December 5, 2005 - 10:54AM
Australian music icon Olivia Newton-John wept as she spoke of trying to get
on with her life following the disappearance and presumed death of her
long-term boyfriend Patrick McDermott.
An emotional Newton-John told the Nine Network's Today show about the pain
and anguish she has felt since McDermott went missing and how it almost
drove her to quit singing.
"It was a very difficult decision (to tour and sing again)," she said.
"I didn't feel like singing and I didn't think I would ever sing again. The
thought of it was terrifying to me. Singing is a part of me and it's my
soul. It's how I can express myself and move through it. Music is a very
healing thing."
With tears in her eyes, Newton-John said she still finds the mystery of
48-year-old McDermott's disappearance traumatic.
"So many people are going through a rough time this Christmas, I never
understood it before but I really do now," she said, before cutting the
interview short to compose herself and wipe away her tears.
McDermott vanished during an overnight fishing expedition off the California
coast on June 30.
Relatives reported him missing on July 11, when they found his car still
parked at a marina with personal items inside. His wallet and passport were
left on the boat.
The US Coast Guard was investigating his disappearance as a missing person
case.A spokesman said investigators were looking into all possibilities,
including that McDermott had staged his own disappearance.
While Newton-John said she was getting through the ordeal, it had been
difficult.
"Things like this come in waves. Anyone who has gone through loss or a
painful experience knows that. You think you're coping, then you hit a wall
or a wave and you go down and come up again. The pain is there and you feel
it ... and there is no escape."
Newton-John will tour New Zealand and Australia in March next year.

l
Man overboard
August 27, 2005
Mystery . . . Olivia Newton-John'>Olivia Newton-John'>Olivia Newton-John'>Olivia Newton-John has remained near-silent on the
disappearance of her partner, Patrick McDermott.
Trapped somewhere between grief and hope, Olivia Newton-John'>Olivia Newton-John'>Olivia Newton-John'>Olivia Newton-John is in hiding
and in despair, contemplating the unknowable and the unthinkable. If Patrick
McDermott has died, she does not know how or when or where. If he has
disappeared, she apparently does not know why.
And so, faced with uncertainty and fear, she has done what she did the last
time those two demons invaded: summoned Gavin de Becker to her side.
De Becker is the man Hollywood turns to when life goes bad, and when it did
so for Newton-John 22 years ago he did what he does best: saving her from a
stalker who wished her harm. Today he is back, with the job of answering the
myriad questions that cloud the disappearance of McDermott, Newton-John's
partner of nine years.
Did he perish at sea? And if so, was it an accident, or suicide, or murder?
Or did he return to land, and meet misfortune there? Or has he chosen to
disappear, faking his death to escape the complications of a difficult
relationship with his ex-wife?
Publicly at least, those mysteries remain just that, and while they fester
other questions have taken root: why was it his ex-wife who reported him
missing, and not Newton-John? Why did the star stay in Australia? And why
did she remain silent for six weeks when a single statement could have shone
the kind of light families in other missing persons cases only dream of?
Amid a media frenzy, attention has focused as much on her behaviour as his.
Yet apart from one statement, she has remained in seclusion as rumour and
innuendo have gained traction. Belatedly, Australian friends distressed by
the coverage are rallying to defend her. But in Los Angeles, with a PR firm
enforcing a strict "no comment" to everything, the relationship has been
left looking as cloudy as the fate of the man she calls "my treasured
friend".
IF McDERMOTT was remembered at the 22nd Street Marina and Landing in San
Pedro, it was as the guy who brought his 15-year-old son along on three or
four fishing trips last year. But on June 30, he was travelling alone. He
had paid $130 by credit card for a berth on the fishing boat Freedom, for
its overnight run off the southern Californian coast.
This time, he was as good as invisible. Most of the crew has no recollection
of him, Frank Liversedge, the landing manager, says - though he insists some
of the 22 passengers say they saw McDermott get off the boat.
Other circumstances support that claim. On the homeward leg, five kilometres
offshore, passengers assembled to settle the costs for food, drinks and
deckhand services; McDermott was recorded as paying $12.50 for two hotdogs
and soft drinks.
At least 15 people would have noticed if McDermott had gone over the side
before the boat docked, Liversedge says. And if McDermott did not fall or
jump and was not pushed, the only conclusion is that he walked up the
30-metre gangway, through a high, barred gate and away.
IT WAS Thursday night in Los Angeles, Friday in Australia. In Melbourne,
Newton-John was preparing for Anne Peacock's birthday party at Crown Casino.
She was home for a holiday, with a little business as well: National Tree
Day, an event she founded with Planet Ark's Jon Dee and one of several
causes dear to her heart. Newton-John's daughter, Chloe, was with her;
McDermott was not, though there was nothing unusual about that.
This was not a traditional relationship, something friends are at pains to
point out. Newton-John travels constantly, they say, either performing or
meeting the other demands of life as what one calls "a global business".
"Olivia tours six months of the year so they aren't in constant contact like
a lot of other couples," says one friend, speaking on condition of
anonymity.
Richard Wilkins, the Channel Nine entertainment reporter, agrees her career
means they are used to being apart. But he and others say the relationship
was strong. "They are extremely fond of each other," says Wilkins, a former
partner of Newton-John's niece, Tottie Goldsmith. "He was very attentive and
loving to Livvy, as we would want him to be."
It's a view supported by McDermott's only significant comment on his
girlfriend. On This Is Your Life last year, he declared: "I love you ... The
whole world loves you. You are the epitome of the word 'woman'."
He was Newton-John's "rock", says a friend, and on July 1 there was nothing
to suggest that had changed. But in Los Angeles, a woman with whom McDermott
had a far more contentious relationship had reason to start worrying.
IN HOLLYWOOD terms, Yvette Nipar is a minnow to Olivia Newton-John'>Olivia Newton-John'>Olivia Newton-John'>Olivia Newton-John's whale -
one a household name, the other a workaday actress with a string of modest
credits. But they shared one thing in common: both had fallen for McDermott.
He and Nipar were married for 18 months in the early 1990s, with their son,
Chance, born five months after they wed. In court statements filed when they
divorced, Nipar, now 40, described her former husband as "hostile and
abusive", and a bad example to their son.
A month before McDermott vanished, she had gone to court in pursuit of child
support payments. But in early July, whatever her issues with him, Nipar was
concerned. She did not hear from him on the weekend of July 2, nor the
following weekend when he was supposed to collect his son. It is understood
Nipar or someone close to her then called Newton-John's office. Was Patrick
with Olivia? No, she was in Australia, alone. Worried, Nipar started making
inquiries.
Before that call, the date of which is unclear, Newton-John was oblivious.
But back in Melbourne, she was dealing with a tragedy unrelated to anything
that might have happened to her partner.
On July 4, there was terrible news from Sydney: her goddaughter, Jerusha
McGrath, had been in a car accident. She was in a coma. Newton-John flew
north immediately.
THE answering machine in McDermott's home was overflowing. Among the
messages were several from his landlord, Zachary Nemzer, inquiring about the
rent.
His calls and pager messages unanswered, Nemzer finally sent a fax.
McDermott was two months in arrears. On paper at least, financial problems
were not new. In March 2000 he filed for bankruptcy, owing $US31,000.
McDermott estimated his total combined monthly income at just over $US1000,
with monthly expenses of nearly $US3500.
He may simply have been bad at managing his money, but friends of
Newton-John's scoff at the thought financial problems could have driven him
away. She is wealthy - and generous along with it, they say. "Money," says
one source, "is not a problem that he had."
That, however, does not explain why McDermott's friends had to do a
whip-round to cover his rent. That was after Nipar found the fax from his
landlord on July 19 and called Nemzer in tears. It was one of several calls
she made - including, on July 11, to Liversedge. It was then it became clear
something was amiss.
McDermott's car was still in the car park, and, Liversedge said, his bum bag
and tackle box had been found on the boat. Inside the box was McDermott's
wallet, driver's licence and passport. Police and the Coast Guard were
informed. But if he had done a runner, by then McDermott had an 11-day head
start.
FOR Newton-John, if there was a July to compare to this one, it was in 1992
when she faced twin catastrophes: her father, Brin, a retired professor,
died, and she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Earlier that year her retail
chain, Koala Blue, had been forced into bankruptcy, a chain of events that
she would later credit with showing her hidden reserves of strength.
Now she would need them again.
On July 7, unaware McDermott had vanished, she posed for photos in Sydney at
a Tree Day planting. But the famous smile masked a secret pain: she was
spending almost all her time at the hospital bedside of her goddaughter.
While McGrath has since begun to recover, in mid-July it was Newton-John's
sole focus, a source says. At some point that week or early the next, she
became aware of the concerns over McDermott's whereabouts, and while she did
not return immediately to the US, "things were happening behind the scenes".
But as confusion gave way to deep fears for his wellbeing, she returned to
Los Angeles, unhappy with what was being done to find him and ready to put
Gavin de Becker in charge.
De Becker had saved her before, in 1983, when a stalker, Michael Perry, was
found near her home. Perry later slaughtered five members of his own family
and left a note suggesting Newton-John might be next. De Becker whisked her
into hiding; Perry was caught, and remains on death row. In a 1984
interview, she described the sense of security De Becker provided.
TO KATHLEEN Padden, a neighbour, McDermott was "positive ... he has a surfer
attitude, he keeps things to himself pretty much. But when he looked at
Chance, Chance was his world." Another acquaintance, who asked not to be
named, said: "He's more of a free spirit and lives life the way he wants."
Free enough to walk away - from his partner, his responsibilities to his
ex-wife, his son? No, says Padden. "Not on Chance. Chance was his life."
Was he depressed? Some reports have people on the boat saying McDermott
appeared down, and the Herald has been told the possibility of depression
played a part in Newton-John's decision not to make a public appeal for
help. If he was alive but unstable, it was reasoned, a media storm would be
counterproductive.
WANTED or not, she now has it: a media hurricane that has driven her into
hiding. After a week of it, the fate of McDermott is no clearer but the
effect on Olivia Newton-John'>Olivia Newton-John'>Olivia Newton-John'>Olivia Newton-John is plain.
Publicly, a strategy of near-silence has harmed her, as dozens of curious
questions have gone unanswered. Privately, she is simply shattered.
Graham Kennedy, overseas label manager at her record company, Festival
Mushroom, and a friend of the singer, says she is "very distraught and in a
bad way".
She is said to be surrounded by family and friends as she waits and wonders.
"My heart goes out to her," Wilkins says. "She's such a beautiful, generous
person who you would have thought has had enough happen in her life. No one
deserves it, but especially not a person like her."

The truth about Olivia's boyfriend
By NICK PAPPS in Los Angeles
August 25, 2005
THE missing boyfriend of Australian star Olivia Newton-John has a history of
violence, abuse and welching on childcare payments.
Just weeks before disappearing, Patrick McDermott was ordered by a court to
pay outstanding child maintenance to his ex-wife, CSI actress Yvette Nipar,
for their 13-year-old son Chance.
The 48-year-old photographer also holds a $132,000 life insurance policy
that will be paid out to his son if he dies or is presumed dead.
McDermott - who has a long-standing, bitter custody dispute with Nipar and
has been accused of assaulting and abusing her - has not been seen since
July 1.
He went missing from an overnight fishing trip and one theory is that he
faked his own disappearance,
McDermott had been paying $1000 a month in child payments since the one-year
marriage to Nipar ended in 1993, but had fallen badly behind.
A court order lodged on April 27 ordered McDermott to pay up or face
possible criminal charges.
The court file also reveals allegations McDermott had an "anger management"
problem and had assaulted Nipar.
In one court statement, Nipar said McDermott was "hostile and abusive" and
his "anger management represents an unhealthy example of an adult and
father".
It continued: "I fear Chance will grow up believing that such dysfunctional
behaviour is acceptable."
In a letter from Nipar's lawyer to McDermott, the lawyer writes: "I'm sure
you will recall that circumstances became more ugly with you slamming the
door on Yvette, screaming at her in Chance's presence.
"Yvette took him with her to remove him from the situation in which you
continued to demean her, scream profanities and hit her."
Nipar and McDermott were married on March 1, 1992 when Nipar was four months
pregnant with Chance. They split just more than a year later, on June 30,
1993.
A neighbour described their brief marriage as "turbulent", adding: "One time
Yvette came over and said he [McDermott] was coming home and she wanted us
to be there because she was afraid he would do something."
In another letter from Nipar's lawyer, he accuses McDermott of calling
Yvette "a number of names which I need not repeat but all of this occurred
in the presence of Chance".
The court documents, which end in June 2003, include a letter to Nipar in
which McDermott pleads for more access to their son, saying: "I will see my
son a total of six days a month, hardly the amount of time to nourish a
relationship and instill the moral fibre of half the parenting team.
"I know I have made some mistakes and I am continuing to work at correcting
them."
Documents obtained by The Daily Telegraph yesterday show McDermott was
declared bankrupt in 2000, four years into his relationship with
Newton-John.
In 1996 McDermott said he earned up to $125,000, but by the following year
his business had faltered and by 2000, when he was declared bankrupt, he
listed his income as $596 a month in unemployment benefits and $861 from
paid work.

Olivia's lover upset over money troubles
By NICK PAPPS
August 23, 2005
THE missing lover of Australian singer Olivia Newton-John was depressed
about money troubles he was having with his ex-wife a short time before he
disappeared from a fishing charter boat.
Patrick McDermott, who police say may have faked his own death, told crew
aboard the 25m sport fishing vessel he was locked into some kind of child
support dispute with the mother of his 15-year-old son.
Soon after, he paid the charter fee to the boat's skipper while the boat was
still 4km from shore and has not been since.
As the mystery over his vanishing deepened yesterday it was revealed a
desperate Newton-John has hired one of America's top security experts to
find her lover of nine years.
Gavin De Becker, who saved the Aussie singer from a stalker in 1983, is now
heading the hunt for McDermott.
But although he vanished on July 1, he was not officially reported missing
until July 11. Even then, it was his ex-wife who contacted the coastguard as
Newton-John was in Australia at the time for a tree planting promotion.
Mr McDermott was a regular fisherman who always told his neighbour when he
went on every trip. But he failed to inform him of his last voyage.
Crew aboard the Freedom have told how "Patrick was unusually talkative" on
the trip.
"I'm told he appeared depressed, saying he was having some kind of alimony
trouble with the mother of his kid," a crew insider said.
He also told how near the end of the voyage "Patrick came into the galley,
paid his bill and went back to his state-room".
He added: "His wallet with his driver's licence and all other personal
belongings were found inside later."
It is understood Newton-John has been frustrated with the lack of progress
by investigators and turned to De Becker, whose bodyguards stopped stalker
Michael Perry when he entered Newton-John's property in 1983.
US law enforcement sources yesterday told The Daily Telegraph that the
investigation was stalling because of a lack of information.
"Without any new information it's hard to see how this will be solved," a
source said.
US Coastguard investigator Dennis Nebrich said: "We don't know if he got off
the boat and we didn't get the report until 10 days after he disappeared. We
don't know what's happened."
Yesterday, Carlos Funis, Mr McDermott's neighbour at his modest Los Angeles
home, told The Daily Telegraph he was surprised Mr McDermott never told him
he was leaving on his fishing trip.
"This time he didn't say anything and that's strange," Mr Funis said.
"He went fishing always, and always asked us to look after his house and get
his mail. Now we don't know what's happened, whether he's suffering or
what."
Since news broke of Mr McDermott's disappearance, Newton-John has been in
hiding with her agents refusing to respond to inquiries.

Actually I think it was. IIRC he took over as her manager. He got her to
record that 'when I get down on my knees' song and directed at least one
horrible video.

Well, I'll agree with you on the no talent. But I'm guessing it wasn't
his decision to record "Soul Kiss" or make that horrible 2nd movie with
John Travolta.
I still think he was a cutie though(see the movie Rich and Famous) and

Did Olivia's lover fake his own death
By NICK PAPPS and STEVE GEE
August 22, 2005
THE long-time lover of Australian singer Olivia Newton-John has vanished
during a boat trip amid claims he may have faked his death.
A devastated Newton-John is said to be clinging to the hope that Patrick Kim
McDermott, 47, is still alive because his body has not been recovered two
months after he failed to return from an overnight fishing trip off
California.
But police suspect the photographer may have staged his disappearance.
Mr McDermott, the father of a 15-year-old son, had been dating Newton-John
for nine years.
He vanished on July 1, but none of the boat's crew noticed him missing and
his disappearance was not reported until he failed to arrive at a family
function five days later.
Concerned relatives found Mr McDermott's car in a marina car park on July
11. They then searched the boat and discovered his backpack, fishing rod and
tackle box before contacting the Coast Guard.
Investigators are treating the matter as a missing-person case, but remain
unconvinced by the crew's version of events and are pursuing the possibility
Mr McDermott may have faked his death.
"Is there any suggestion he may have run away, as opposed to have gone
overboard? That's something we're still looking at," Coast Guard
investigator Dennis Nebrich said.
Newton-John, 56, who has lived in the US for more than 20 years since
starring in the 1978 hit film Grease, has not spoken publicly about the
disappearance, but a close friend said she was "obviously experiencing a lot
of grief".
The friend added: "Everyone is shocked and devastated by Patrick's
disappearance, and totally baffled by it.
"There is nothing in his character to suggest he would deliberately take
off. He would never leave his child.
"Patrick and Olivia are like soulmates. They have never had any problems
whatsoever. We're still hoping against hope that he is found safe."
Coast Guard spokesman Danny Phee told The Daily Telegraph McDermott's
ex-wife had reported him missing.
"It was about two weeks after the fact that the ex-wife reported him
missing," Commander Phee said yesterday.
"We referred the matter to our Coast Guard investigative services, and they
have interviewed several people including the boat's captain."
Mr McDermott met Newton-John in 1996 while she was filming a commercial in
Los Angeles.

Fri May 20, 6:51 AM ET
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Pop princess Kylie Minogue was believed to be in
an Australian hospital awaiting surgery for breast cancer on Friday, as
her younger sister Dannii flew in from London to join family and
friends by her side.
Singer Dannii and brother Brendan, an Australian news television
cameraman, arrived at Melbourne's Cabrini private hospital on Friday.
Local media reported they believed Minogue was already in the hospital
awaiting surgery.
Minogue announced on Tuesday that she had been diagnosed with breast
cancer and postponed her Australian and Asian "Showgirl Tour" concerts.
Initial tests showed the cancer was confined to the breast and Minogue
would undergo surgery this week, her management said in a statement on
Thursday.
News of Minogue's breast cancer has dominated Australian and British
media and has attracted words of sympathy and support from some of the
music industry's biggest names -- from Britain's Elton John to U.S.
pop singer Madonna.
"Aside from being tremendously talented, Kylie's a fighter and I know
this is a battle she will win," Madonna said on her Web site
(www.madonna.com).
"Let's all pray for her speedy recovery and send all of our best wishes
her way. With love and light to you Kylie. Madonna."
Minogue rose from a humble showbiz beginning as a teenage actress in
the Australian soap opera "Neighbors" in the 1980s to international
stardom as one of the world's top pop singers.
The star, signed to EMI, is worth about A$60 million (US$46 million),
according to a 2004 list of rich young Australians compiled by BRW
magazine
Australian and international media have camped outside the Minogue
family home since news of the cancer broke. Some have staked out
hospitals in Melbourne.
The government in her home state of Victoria has warned media to
respect her privacy or face legal action.
"This is not the time to be hanging at her house -- you need to leave
her alone," said Australian singer and breast cancer survivor
Olivia Newton-John, who starred in the hit 1978 movie "Grease" with
John Travolta.
Minogue's stardom has boosted the campaign to raise awareness of breast
cancer and the singer has asked fans to donate to cancer research
instead of sending her flowers.
The Cancer Council in Victoria (www.cancervic.org.au) said it had
received more than A$7,000 (US$5,300) in donations from around the
world.
Breast cancer is the biggest cause of cancer deaths in Australian
women, unlike the United States and Britain where it is second, behind
lung cancer.
Australian cancer clinics have reported a flood of women seeking breast
cancer check-ups. There is currently no cure for breast cancer, with
the medical focus on early detection as the best way to survive the
disease.
Newton-John said Minogue's diagnosis highlighted the fact that breast
cancer was a risk for women of all ages, even though young women are
less likely to contract it.
"It's a wake-up call for women that we need to self-examine on a
regular basis and there is no age limit," she said.

Hugo's the victor in box office race
By David Dale
April 25, 2005
Australians may hate their own movies at the moment but they love their own
actors, as long as they're in movies made overseas.
An analysis of the most successful films ever shown here suggests that the
actor most likely to tempt Australians to the cinema is Hugo Weaving. His
box office total of $270 million - from the Lord of the Rings series, the
Matrix series, Priscilla and Babe - far exceeds the $175 million earned by
the top American, Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan and eight
others).
An analysis of the 270 films that have grossed more than $10 million at the
Australian box office appears in the News Review section of today's Herald.
Only 18 of the all-time hits are Australian-made (topped by Crocodile
Dundee, Babe and Moulin Rouge). But 54 have Australian-trained actors or
directors, such as Mel Gibson (What Women Want), Geoffrey Rush (Pirates of
the Caribbean), Peter Weir (The Truman Show), Bryan Brown (Cocktail),
Gillian Armstrong (The Piano), Nicole Kidman (The Others), Toni Collette
(The Sixth Sense), Hugh Jackman (X-Men), Eric Bana (Troy), Russell Crowe
(Gladiator), Natalie Imbruglia (Johnny English), and Olivia Newton-John
(Grease).
Based on box office totals, the 20 most bankable actors for Australian
audiences include three American women (Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Drew
Barrymore), three Englishmen (Orlando Bloom, Ian McKellen and Hugh Grant),
and three Australians or former Australians (Weaving, Gibson and Rush).
The most successful American men are Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy
and the less familiar Bill Paxton (who had significant roles in such hits as
Titanic, Twister, True Lies and Vertical Limit).

Diva of the pack
November 10, 2003
The Sun-Herald
Enduring pop princess Kylie Minogue once again defies critics to redefine
herself, Christine Sams reports.
So here we go again. Kylie Minogue is dressed up as a rock chick, newly
peroxided hair, staring seductively at the camera. In the photo shoot for
her new album, Body Language, revealed on the cover of S for the first time,
the message is clear: I'm strong, I'm sexy and I'm definitely hanging
around.
At 35, Minogue has broken almost every rule of female pop stardom. Not only
has she remained phenomenally popular in the UK and Australia (with a newly
keen audience in the US) with a career spanning three decades, she is also
about to release her ninth studio album after selling millions worldwide.
Her last album, Fever, sold 6 million copies alone.
Yet, deep down, we know it could have gone so horribly wrong. With that
spiral perm, those dodgy overalls and her perennial white-toothed grin on
Neighbours, Minogue could have easily spent 2003 starring in "where are they
now?" specials. Or she might have gone quietly back to a nine-to-five
existence, like so many other soapie stars after their brief time in the
sun.
But nobody is rolling their eyes at news of Minogue's new album release.
Even the most hardened rock industry critics are begrudgingly impressed by
the singer's phenomenal selling power - and there's a consensus it will
continue indefinitely.
The fact we take Minogue very seriously indeed these days is perhaps her
greatest achievement.
The singer herself remains based in the UK, and is busy rehearsing for her
one-off performance at London's Hammersmith Apollo theatre on Saturday
night. The performance is to showcase the songs from Body Language (the
concert will be televised in Australia later this month), with only 4000
fans watching the concert live.
Staged and choreographed by Minogue herself with her longtime creative
director William Baker - yes, the bloke who found those hotpants - the
concert is expected to unveil Minogue's new "rock chick" image, although her
music is anything but rock'n'roll.
Ironically, the new album, with its electro-trash retro feel, harks back to
the pop music produced in the 1980s - the era when Minogue was best known as
Charlene from Neighbours. (And her somewhat daggy single, Locomotion, was
steaming its way into the top of the Australian charts.)
But the singer is in a vastly different position today: the undisputed queen
of UK pop, firmly in control of Kylie Inc and CEO of her own entertainment
company, Kaydeebee - so named because of the initials of Minogue and her
siblings, Danielle and Brendan. If the "Danielle" sounds a bit odd to Dannii
Minogue fans, that's how Kylie Minogue addresses her sister in the
thank-yous on her newest album.
Like many of Minogue's career moves, her one-off Money Can't Buy performance
in London is undoubtedly a brilliant marketing strategy: Minogue only has to
perform once, but the footage is likely to be picked up by nearly two
million fans in Europe via internet webcasts alone.
Subsequent webcasts and TV specials are likely to broaden the global
audience to something in the region of 8 million viewers. Not bad for one
night's work. As for the music itself, Parlophone Records managing director
Miles Leonard has told British reporters the album is vastly different to
Minogue's Fever. "It feels like a definite move on from the last album,
without losing sight of the quality control on songs," he said.
"It has to be fresh. It wasn't a case of getting all the publishers to send
around their songs. We were more interested in people collaborating with
Minogue herself to create something new."
But the two key buzz words in Minogue's camp haven't changed one bit:
"quality" and "control".
Pop music has long been slagged off in various sections of the music
industry, but it is undoubtedly its biggest money-spinner. In an industry
where "hot" bands and performers can disappear within months, if not weeks,
after hitting the top of the charts, Minogue's longevity is legendary.
Much of it is down to her own level of control over her career, which has
developed substantially in the past decade, combined with the support of her
close-knit management team, led by long-term manager Terry Blamey.
Blamey is firmly in control of Minogue's media exposure and he tightly
limits her one-on-one interviews with the press, with the full approval of
his star client. Glamorous photos of Minogue are churned out on a regular
basis, but the singer herself rarely speaks at length to the press.
Even during Minogue's turbulent break-up with model James Gooding, which was
splashed all over the front pages of British newspapers, Blamey wisely held
off on a smear campaign against Gooding - the result being that Minogue said
very little, but weathered the public and private turmoil successfully. In
fact, the singer eventually blamed herself for the break-up, claiming it was
the incredible demands of her work schedule which forced the couple apart.
"Imagine how frustrating it must have been for them, wanting to tell the
whole story," said a source close to Minogue in the UK. "But Kylie was very
upset and embarrassed and determined to bring the focus back to the music
eventually, and it's worked." Of course, it doesn't hurt that Minogue now
has Olivier Martinez by her side. (James who?) And music critics are
speculating that one of the key reasons Minogue will perform only once over
the next few months is to avoid putting similar pressure on her relationship
with Martinez. (Minogue and Martinez are expected to return to Australia
over Christmas, but the visit is "strictly private" says a spokeswoman for
Martinez.)
Even as the singles from Body Language are rolled out over the next couple
of months, Minogue's reign will be challenged by other pop singers including
Holly Valance, Pink and Britney Spears. But there's still plenty they can
learn from the princess of pop.
For starters, Minogue was never afraid to get an education from other
celebrities. INXS lead singer, the late Michael Hutchence, was undoubtedly
her best-known tutor (in music and other "arts"). But Minogue has regularly
paid homage to others, including Madonna, often crediting her for
influencing her career.
Other singers including Olivia Newton-John have played a role in Minogue's
success - and if the singer was hoping to emulate Sandy from Grease, she's
gone pretty close this time around.
Looking at the biker shots on Body Language, there's no doubt Minogue is
easily on a par with Madonna in the reinvention stakes.
These days she's the undisputed leader of the pack.
Body language: The verdict
The eyeliner maketh the rock chick. Or so you would think, judging by Kylie
Minogue's latest look. But even with her changing make-up (and, some might
say, her changing face and bustline), Minogue has stuck firmly to what she
knows best with her latest release: pure pop music.
At last count, Minogue's worldwide sales were 65 million units, including
singles and albums, a simply phenomenal figure.
To maintain the momentum on Body Language she's shifted towards recording
"hot" retro sounds, with a number of tracks featuring electro-influences,
synthesiser backing tracks and 1980s styling (a creative move also employed
by Holly Valance, who releases her album tomorrow).
Many of Minogue's tunes also have an obvious R&B feel, which may reflect her
intention to shift towards mainstream attention in the United States.
Some local fans have been unimpressed with her first single, Slow, but the
minimalist beats and lyrics set the tone for the entire album. Other sultry
R&B-style tracks include Chocolate (love the title) and Red Blooded Woman.
Obviously the "Olivier effect" has well and truly taken hold!
Body Language will be released in Australia next Sunday and in the UK next
Monday. The US release has been scheduled for February 10, with the singer
likely to travel to the US for a promotional tour
