Flight of sheer joy
Des Partridge reviews Peter Pan (PG)
20dec03
PETER Pan has been around for a century as a play, book, and numerous films,
including Disney's memorable 1953 animation, but the new Queensland-made
movie directed by Muriel's Wedding hit-maker P.J. Hogan offers a striking,
distinctive version that is a Christmas stocking stuffed with magic.
Apart from one feasting scene in which slices of juicy watermelon can be
seen, there's nothing to hint at the movie's link to subtropical Queensland,
or the fact that the $135 million film, funded by three studios, was given
life at the Warner Roadshow Studios near the Gold Coast.
Breathtaking elements include the magical worlds created by the film's
production designer, Roger Ford, to represent Edwardian London - reminiscent
of the Harry Potter locations - and the fairyland rainforests inspired by
O'Reilly's Green Mountains that are a feature of Neverland.
It's here in the vibrant Technicolor-brilliant world of Neverland, in a
story narrated beautifully by the honey-voiced Saffron Burrows, that Peter
Pan and Wendy - Jeremy Sumpter and Rachel Hurd-Wood, two of the brightest
juvenile talents to emerge on screen this year - do battle with the evil
Captain Hook.
Hook is a rewarding role for the suitably menacing Jason Isaacs (The
Patriot), who sticks with tradition and also doubles in the role of Wendy's
"proper" banker father, Mr Darling.
Ford's eye-catching design is enhanced by the magical special effects, from
marshmallow clouds to kilograms of fairy dust sprinkled whenever the tiny
gamine Tinkerbell (French beauty Ludivine Sagnier) flashes across the screen
for a new bit of mischief, or the dazzling flying sequences involving Peter
Pan who instructs the Darling children to think happy thoughts and fly
"second to the right, and straight on to morning".
Gold Coast-based Oscar winner John Cox (Babe) contributes a couple of superb
characters in his parrot and crocodile animatronic creations that are
scene-stealers in themselves, particularly the parrot and the lobster head.
While they are only on screen fleetingly, mermaids (human, but wearing
prosthetics fashioned by New Zealand's Weta workshops which contributed so
much to The Lord of the Rings films) add another magic element.
Scott Farrar supervised the overall special effects, and they are never less
than dazzling in a movie that constantly reminds you of the magic
possibilities of modern movie-making.
Peter Pan and Wendy feature in a love story that is quite stirring and
emotional, and you have the rollicking fun of action sequences to enhance
the movie.
Hogan is faithful to the tone and plot of J.M. Barrie's enduring story,
setting the scene perfectly for Wendy, John (Harry Newell) and Michael
(Freddie Popplewell) to leave behind their father and mother (the alluring
Olivia Williams) and join "the boy who never grew up" on the biggest
adventure of their lives.
In the process they leave behind Nana, a pooch who should be a star as big
as Lassie - that is, if anyone can find it a suitable follow-up role.
Hook, his fawning henchman Smee (Richard Briers), and his shabby crew
including comic supporting roles for Aussie talents such as Bruce Spence and
Daniel Wyllie, provide lively opposition for the children, joined by the
ragamuffin Lost Boys.
Australian veteran Donald McAlpine's glorious cinematography enhances the
movie, following on from where he left off with Moulin Rouge, which earned
him an Academy Award nomination.
This impressive achievement isn't just a movie for this Christmas. It's
likely to be recalled for years whenever someone wants magic in their lives.
It's two hours of boundless joys
From Sunny Oz, Rick :)
