Every week night, the ritual is the same. Patsy Kensit kneels on the cheap
carpet of her hotel room and phones her sons at the family's London home.
She chats for a few moments and then urges the two boys to join her in
prayer - a solemn experience which lasts up to half an hour. Then she
exercises for an hour before eating a light supper of vegetable soup and
retiring early.
For someone who was once the archetypal party girl (she's had three rock
star husbands - each one wilder than his predecessor), this is hardly cool.
And there's more. Patsy goes to church every Sunday; she is leaving a role
in one soap opera (Emmerdale) for another (Holby City); her weekday home in
Leeds is a no-frills business hotel; and even her moisturiser is
unfashionable (Astral, a snip at £1.99).
You might think that this woman - who appeared in Hollywood blockbuster
Lethal Weapon II with Mel Gibson and once graced the cover of Vanity Fair
with her third husband, Oasis hellraiser Liam Gallagher, as the epitome of
Cool Britannia - has fallen on hard times. But you'd be wrong.
She still has "issues" with men (her current beau is a handsome actor 11
years her junior), but Patsy is happier than she has been for years.
After a lifetime of celebrity excess, she has found inner peace for the
first time since the death of her mother, Marge, 12 years ago.
Patsy is unrecognisable from the diva who once announced: "All I want is to
be more famous than anyone ever. If it means I can't go to the shops to buy
a pair of knickers without being mobbed, I won't mind."
At the ripe old age of 37, fame is no longer her goal. Instead, she devotes
her life to her sons, James, 13, and Lennon, six, while forging a
respectable, if unspectacular, career as a soap opera actress.
The most obvious sign of contentment is her appearance. Patsy is a fit,
curvy size 12, thanks to healthy eating and a WeightWatchers diet. Years of
cocaine abuse resulted in a rake-thin figure, after which she ballooned so
rapidly to a size 16 that many thought she was pregnant, so this marks a
welcome change.
Friends say the reason for her new contentment is obvious: she has regained
her selfrespect after her disastrous marriage to Gallagher.
"She's had her fill of rogues," says a friend. "They are the guys she always
goes for, but they are totally wrong for her. Now, she's not being dragged
down by an unsuitable man like Liam, in a marriage which drove her to the
brink of madness."
Which makes it even harder to understand Patsy's new romance with
26-year-old Leo Gregory. She is said to have fallen head over heels for the
handsome young actor, who plays Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones in the
new British film, Stoned.
They were pictured recently, bleary eyed, leaving Patsy's Notting Hill
townhouse. But while Patsy shows every intention of leaving her celebrity
lifestyle behind, Leo is a hot, young actor with a party-loving reputation.
Before dating Ms Kensit, he was spotted on a particularly exuberant night
out with actress Tamzin Outhwaite - another older woman.
But to those who know Patsy, the relationship is no surprise. "Patsy needs
men like the rest of us need air to breathe - she can't help herself," says
a friend.
"But we aren't taking this latest one too seriously. Leo is unlikely to
stick around long enough to change her life. He's just the latest in a long
line."
Patsy's entanglements are well documented. A brief, first marriage to Big
Audio Dynamite keyboard player Dan Donovan was followed by Simple Minds
singer Jim Kerr, father of James, and Gallagher, father of Lennon.
Patsy landed her first pop star boyfriend, Nick Hayward, of teen idols
Haircut One Hundred, at 15.
There followed a bewildering array of poptastic partners, from Spandau
Ballet's Gary Kemp to John Taylor of Duran Duran and Andrew Ridgeley of
Wham! But it was Gallagher who made the biggest - and most destructive -
impact.
As one friend puts it: "He destroyed her confidence. He was unfaithful,
and their lifestyle revolved around drinking, doing cocaine and arguing.
At first, she was attracted to his wildness, but after a couple of years it
became obvious he couldn't care less about her. That came as a shock - until
then, Patsy was the one who called the shots. She was so beautiful, men
would fall over each other to get close to her.
"After they split up, she was all over the place and made some terrible
mistakes."
First, an affair with football pundit Ally McCoist (he dumped her, then his
wife dumped him) followed by flirtations with TV comic David Walliams and
celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli.
"Then she went off and did something no one in their wildest dreams would
have expected her to do - sign up for Emmerdale," says a friend.
"All her cool London friends were disgusted. They thought it was beyond the
pale - doing a boring old soap opera set, shock horror, in the north! But it
turned her life around."
Going to Leeds during the week has been a blessing in disguise. Though she
misses her children terribly, it was an opportunity to regain control of her
life away from the shadier influences of the London celebrity set. She
joined the Emmerdale WeightWatchers programme and shed more than a stone.
Her former costar Amy Nuttall says: "I've never met anyone as disciplined as
Patsy. We all fall on the on-location catering, but she just has soup from a
flask. She never gives in to temptation."
Much of Patsy's spare time is spent pedalling on an exercise bike or
socialising with the Emmerdale cast - her unexpected humility helped her to
make friends.
This all come to an end in October, when she joins hospital soap Holby City.
Her pay will almost double, to £150,000 a year, but with a fortune estimated
at £16 million she hardly needs money. More importantly, she'll be back with
her boys.
"The move back to London is highly significant," says a close source. "Six
months ago, I'd have questioned whether she could cope, because there was a
risk she'd fall back into the cocaine-fuelled celebrity lifestyle.
"But her time away has done her the power of good. She is a much stronger
person with real depth.
"All her life, Patsy has had people saying she's beautiful or trendy; now,
people tell her she's a nice person, a good friend and a great mother."
Evidence of Patsy's more mature outlook can be found in her friendships. She
is close to second husband Jim Kerr, and enjoys family dinners with him and
his other former wife, Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde.
As a friend explains: "Jim was the right man at the wrong time for Patsy,
and they both know that. They know too much about each other to go back, but
they get on brilliantly."
She's even friends with Lisa Moorish, who conceived a love child with
Gallagher within a week of his wedding to Patsy. So how can she get on with
them all, despite everything that's happened?
"The key to understanding Patsy is to look at her background," says a close
friend.
"Her father was an East End gangster, not that you'd know it to listen to
her, because her mother sent her to elocution lessons."
Patsy's father was known as Jimmy the Dip, a nickname derived from the
underworld term for pickpocket. Reggie Kray was godfather to her older
brother, Jamie.
Jimmy spent time in jail before Patsy was born, but she grew up thinking he
was an antiques dealer.
It was her mother who signed her up with a theatrical agency at the age of
18 months. Her big break came in an advert for Bird's Eye peas, followed by
a role, aged six, as Mia Farrow's daughter in The Great Gatsby.
"Patsy was only 25 when her mum died and never got over it," says a friend.
"She says she feels closest to her mum when she is in church. She even uses
Astral moisturiser because her mum did."
"When you look at her love life, it's obvious Patsy is looking for an anchor
to replace her mother. The sad thing is that she seems incapable of choosing
the right man."

The couple ended their three-year marriage in 2000, and entered into
a public war of words following their bitter divorce battle, with
Kensit accusing the WONDERWALL star of causing her years of therapy and
a stint in rehab for cocaine addiction.
But the sparring pair overcame their differences, and took their
three-year-old son to London's exclusive Portland Hospital for minor
surgery.
A close friends says, "Patsy and Liam are getting on a lot better
than they used to.
"Lennon was really nervous about going into hospital. Both Patsy and
Liam wanted to be there for him to comfort and assure him everything
would be fine.
"It was a routine operation and Lennon is now back at home doing

Dr Who in frame for top TV honours

Dr Who stars Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper have been nominated for
top acting honours at this year's National Television Awards.
Eccleston, who quit as the doctor after just one series, is up for best
actor and faces competition from the likes of EastEnders' Shane Richie and
Coronation Street's Bradley Walsh.
Piper, who played his sidekick Rose, is up against Zoe Lucker from
Footballers' Wives, Patsy Kensit from Emmerdale, EastEnders star Jessie
Wallace and Corrie's Kate Ford in the battle for best actress.
The longlist for the awards was announced today and the public can vote for
their favourites.
Organisers have introduced a new category this year: most popular expert on
TV.
The list of contenders includes Alan Sugar, Gordon Ramsay, Simon Cowell,

It's turning into a dream year for the 40-year-old Desperate Housewives

Soap queen and erstwhile pop star Patsy Kensit has admitted her role in
Emmerdale is "the best thing that's ever happened".
The former wife of Oasis rocker Liam Gallagher told the a Sunday magazine
her part as Sadie King in the long-running series was a highlight in her
eventful life.
The 36-year-old has also been married to musician Dan Donovan and Simple
Minds' singer Jim Kerr, and has starred in films such as Lethal Weapon 2
alongside Mel Gibson.
She explained: "I'm so lucky and so grateful, it's the best thing that's
ever happened to me. "Looking back on everything that's happened, I've had
some incredible times and lived very much to the extreme.
"I've experienced a lot of things personally and professionally. But this is
the most content I've been."
And she told the magazine how she has decided she does not want any more
children, but was helped by her young boys, James, 12, and Lennon, five, at
a low point in her life.
She changed her diet and lifestyle around four years ago, and said: "They
saved me, really.
"I had these two beautiful boys and I realised they deserved the best
possible mother I could be. "I wanted to change everything and I did."

No that's not the case. Liam Gallagher has a third child, Molly, with
singer Lisa Moorish whom he slept with one week after marrying Fatsy
Kensit. Molly is of a darker skin colour.
