The director Phillip Noyce announced the cast yesterday for a film of Tim
Winton's award-winning novel Dirt Music, which he plans to shoot on the
coast outside Perth and the Kimberley early next year.
While never formally attached, Kidman had been interested in starring in the
romantic drama for several years. But when the was finally ready,
Noyce said the Oscar-winner was already committed to the director Baz
Luhrmann's next film.
The role - a woman who falls for an outcast musician in a remote coastal
town - has gone to the English actress Rachel Weisz, who won her own Oscar
for The Constant Gardener this year.
Noyce, who is finishing the apartheid-era thriller Catch a Fire in Sydney,
joked that Weisz would make "an ethnographic study" before filming so she
could play an Australian.
"We were looking for a particular dynamic," he said. "Rachel was the one who
most seemed to occupy that character's space."
The director of Newsfront, Patriot Games and Rabbit-Proof Fence said Winton
had helped the writers Justin Monjo and Pip Karmel adapt the novel for the
film, which has a budget of more than $20 million.
"It really does capture not only very typical relationships and characters,
all of whom I felt I've known for decades even though I'm an east coaster,
it also captures the Australian relationship with the landscape - the bush
and the sea."
Ledger had shown in Brokeback Mountain and Candy how well he could play a
fragile character. He had already asked for the songs he needed to play on
guitar and sing in Dirt Music.
"I was surprised when he read the by the way he responded to it. He
was so drawn to the character. That's all he wanted to talk about - what he
was feeling, how much he knew him or didn't know him."
Noyce said he knew nothing about reports that Ledger had been offered a role
replacing Russell Crowe in Luhrmann's film, which is also scheduled to shoot
in the Kimberley next year. He denied a rumour that Crowe was attached to
Dirt Music at one stage.
"If they're filming around the same time, no doubt there'll be one or two
outback airports that will be quite busy."

Hollywood's hot couples were out in force on Oscar night. But while
some bronzed themselves in camera flash, others dodged the shooters.
Madonna did her best to dispel rumors of marital discord by making sure
every photographer outside the Vanity Fair party got a picture of her
with smiling husband Guy Ritchie. Likewise, reunited couple Nicollette
Sheridan and Michael Bolton trumpeted their love.
"I'm a lucky palooka," Bolton told us as he admired his Desperate
Housewife. He even sang to her: "Love is lovelier, the second time
around ..."
Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, on the other hand, came =ADseparately
to editor Graydon Carter's exclusive party at Morton's. Seeing him,
Aniston screamed, "Baby!" and ran over to her big lug for a long kiss.
Later, they evaded the lensmen by sneaking out a side exit.
George Clooney and Krista Allen also kept photographers guessing. The
Best Supporting Actor celebrated his win at Dan Tana's with Madonna and
Guy, Rachel Weisz and Darren Aronofsky, and other friends. But "The
Insider's" Marc Malkin says he heard that Clooney and Allen also
slipped out the back while the Ritchies distracted paparazzi.
Among the other devoted duos at the Vanity Fair bash: Nicole Kidman and
Keith Urban (touching each other under a table); Jennifer Lopez and
Marc Anthony; Sandra Bullock and Jesse James; Taye Diggs and Idina
Menzel; Rachel Griffiths and Andrew Taylor; Jessica Alba and Cash
Warren; Jennifer Jason Leigh and Noah Baumbach; Brittany Murphy and Joe
Mancuso, and Kerry Washington and David Moscow.
Revlon billionaire Ron Perelman turned up stag at the party, where he
hit it off a few years back with soon-to-be-ex-wife Ellen Barkin. Keanu
Reeves came without Lynn Collins. Hilary Swank, who's been working her
way back to hubby Chad Lowe, arrived without him - but she was
wearing her wedding ring.
Swank, who presented Philip Seymour Hoffman with his Best Actor trophy,
reassured the "Capote" star when he forgot to thank his girlfriend,
Mimi O'Donnell. "No one forgot like I forgot," said Swank, who famously
neglected to mention Lowe when she won her first Oscar. "But people
will understand."
Hoffman told us the whole experience was "nerve-racking." (At least he
didn't have to "bark" his acceptance speech, as he once promised
director Bennett Miller and writer Dan Futterman in a drunken moment.
"They let me off the hook, but said, 'If you do bark, we will meow,"
recalled Hoffman.)
Of course, Robert Altman was there with his wife of 47 years, Kathryn.
Having revealed in his Oscar speech that he had a heart transplant 10
years ago, Altman admitted that he worried then that "no one would hire
me." Kathryn recalled how they got USA Today to "correct" a Variety
story reporting the surgery. "We denied it like hell," she said. "And
his career went on. It had a happy ending."
Elsewhere at the Vanity Fair party, worlds collided when novelist
Salman Rushdie hung out with Three 6 Mafia, who won gold for "It's Hard
Out Here for a Pimp." "That's the song I was really rooting for," said
Rushdie. "I really liked 'Hustle and Flow.'"
Rapper Juicy Jay was not as familiar with Rushdie's "Satanic Verses,"
but he did like the poetry of Rushdie's wife, Padma Lakshmi, as the
model and actress shook to the music on top of an ottoman. "Oooh," said
Juicy.

'The Constant Gardener' star Rachel Weisz felt her baby kicking all the way
through the Oscars ceremony.
But the actress - who is seven months pregnant - says the moment she went up
to collect her award on Sunday night (05.02.06), it stopped.
Rachel revealed: "With the lead up to that, the adrenaline, the baby was
going crazy.
"Poor baby. It was kicking around, but once I went onto the stage I think
it's so overwhelming that I could have hardly told you my name."
The star also ruled out calling her unborn child, 'Oscar' - despite winning
her first Academy Award.
She said: "There are a few names that we are considering.
"We don't know if it's a boy or a girl, but Oscar isn't amongst them."
Rachel is expecting her first child with director Darren Aronofsky in early
spring.

Hollywood (AFP) - Tension reached fever pitch as
Hollywood began the final countdown to Sunday's Oscars,
with a posse of "serious" films, led by "Brokeback
Mountain," set to overrun the big night.
As workers frantically put the finishing touches on
preparations for the 78th annual Academy Awards, which
start with the legendary red carpet celebrity fashion
show, the anxious nominees are crossing their fingers.
In a year laden with small-budget movies packing weighty
political or social messages, Taiwan director Ang Lee's
film about gay cowboys is the frontrunner for the top
awards, including best picture and best director.
"We're almost there and I think 'Brokeback' is still
leading the race," said veteran Hollywood Reporter online
columnist Marty Grove.
But the aching story of two macho farmhands who fall in
love despite themselves and pursue an unfulfilled 20-year
romance faces a last-minute challenge from a dark horse,
Paul Haggis's racial drama "Crash."
"The buzz is that the threat to 'Brokeback' from 'Crash'
is now very real," awards expert Tom O'Neil of the
website theEnvelope.com said of the tiny independent
movie that may crash Ang Lee's party.
"'Brokeback' has a passionate following, but you also
have 'Capote' and 'Transamerica' this year and they may
have created a gay fatigue," he told AFP.
But like other pundits, O'Neil is still betting that the
offbeat Western which has swept Hollywood's awards season
and led the Oscars race from the start will still rope in
five statuettes Sunday.
It rides into the Oscars armed with a leading eight
nominations, including best picture, director, best actor
for Australia's Heath Ledger'>Heath Ledger and best supporting role

competition from Paul Giammati for "Cinderella Man," Matt
Dillon for "Crash," and William Hurt for "A History of
Violence."
Facing off against frontrunner Ang Lee for best director
are "Capote's" Miller, Haggis for "Crash," Clooney as
director of "Good Night," and Spielberg for "Munich," the
only big-budget film in the major categories.
The politically outspoken Clooney is also nominated for
his best original screenplay for "Good Night," the story
of newsman Ed Murrow's crusade against the repression of
the US and-Communist witch hunt of the 1950s.
The political current running through this year's Oscars
is further stoked by the Palestinian best foreign
language film contender "Paradise Now," about two friends
who become suicide bombers, a nomination that infuriated
many Israelis.
It competes against France's World War I story "Joyeux
Noel," Italy's story of sex abuse, "Don't Tell,"
Germany's "Sophie Scholl -- The Final Days" and South
Africa's crime drama "Tsotsi," by Gavin Hood.
"Oscar has gone very serious this year," Grove said of
the nominees. "In the past, the Oscars were only about
great filmmaking and entertainment, but now its about
passing on an important message."

Witch hunt? Yeah, I love Coulter and I will use her as a
reference, but hundreds of Communist spies within the
government is hardly a "witch hunt." Russia was only
pointing nuclear arms at us for 40 years and killing
MILLIONS of it's own people, why can't we all be
Communists and spread a Communist agenda? It frustrates
me to the bone sometimes.
I am a young guy, and I find it sad that up until I read
about McCarthy, I seriously thought he was a bad guy.
Because that is what I grew up seeing and learning in
class and the television. This crap just plain infuriates
me!

Great point, too many of our young believe Hollyweird
portrays history correctly. Many can not and will not
read history books.
However, back to Brokenbutt Mountin and where Hollyweird
is shall be fun. They have put themselves between a rock
and upset gayboys. If it does not win they will be
protesting that Hollyweird caved to the religious
fanatics.
By the way have you heard the top five movies nominated
have only been see by 10% of the population. Guess that
shows the rest of us how out of sync we are with those
great minds in Holleyweird.
