He made Reese Witherspoon swoon in Sweet Home Alabama. Now Josh Lucas
has found an even bigger costar - the 150-ft. wave that upends a
cruise ship in the disaster pic Poseidon, which crashes into theaters
May 12. The Little Rock native chatted with PEOPLE about life, love and
booking passage on one seriously soggy blockbuster.
DON'T DRINK THE WATER
Despite training in breath control to play the leader of a ragtag group
trying to escape the capsized ship, Lucas, 34, wasn't prepared for the
rigors of five months of filming in a 22- ft.-deep pool. "I started to
hate that tank so badly," he says. "There's one chunk in the movie
where I'm underwater for a long time and I got as close as I could
get without running out of air. It was a very scary moment." But his
biggest complaint? "The amount of people peeing in that tank! It was
such an issue. Someone asked me why I didn't just mutiny."
TAKING HIS LUMPS
On Poseidon, Lucas did most of his stunts - with mixed results. "A
muscle (in my thumb) literally snapped," the actor says of one of his
on-set injuries, two of which sent him to the hospital. "There was
nothing connecting my thumb except skin. (Doctors) had to cut it open
and rebuild it." And during an underwater scene, he was accidentally
whacked in the face with a metal flashlight by costar Kurt Russell.
Lucas says the resulting gash "wasn't a big deal," but Russell's
longtime love Goldie Hawn thought otherwise. "Kurt came over to me and
said, 'Goldie wanted to know if I had apologized to you.' It was one
of those total guy moments. He never once actually said, 'I'm sorry.'"
KEEPING IT REAL
Though he says he's "womanized out," the New York City-based actor says
he is happily and "completely single." Still Lucas does want to settle
down soon. "I'm about to turn 35 and I want a family. I can feel it in
me. Otherwise the rewards of bouncing around become limited, for sure."
(He dated Salma Hayek for a year.) The son of two political activists
who moved 30 times by the time Lucas was 13, the actor now counts on
his siblings to keep him in his place. "My brother Devin has this thing
he calls KJR," he says. "It means 'Keep Josh Real!' It's a whole
philosophy of him beating my ass all the time. (My family) will not
take anything from me"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - They're not married and their romance has fed
Hollywood's rumor mills for months. But on Thursday, People Magazine
gave Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie its blessing.
The magazine named the heavily-pregnant Jolie, Pitt and the two adopted
children they are raising as the "World's Most Beautiful Family."
People put Jolie on the cover of the magazine's annual "Most Beautiful
People" issue, saying that it was the first time that a pregnant woman
has won the cover spot for its special issue.
The magazine hailed Jolie for her humanitarian work as well as her
natural beauty. It quoted musician Wyclef Jean as saying, "She looks
most beautiful when she's in the field -- natural, no makeup, nothing.
Because (then) you see Angelina, the angel. It doesn't get any better
than that."
In addition to the twice-divorced Jolie, 30, and Pitt, 42, the "World's
Most Beautiful Family" includes son Maddox, 4, and daughter Zahara, 1.
The four are currently in the African nation of Namibia, where Jolie is
awaiting the birth of her child with Pitt.
The couple met during the filming of the movie "Mr. and Mrs. Smith,"
when Pitt was still married to actress Jennifer Aniston.
It was the fourth time Jolie has made the "beautiful people" list.
Other stars on the list included actresses Halle Berry and Julia
Roberts, who now tie for the most appearances with 10 apiece. Oscar
winners George Clooney and Reese Witherspoon made the list as did
television stars Ryan Seacrest of "American Idol" and Eva Longoria of
"Desperate Housewives."

BEYOND THE SEA is underrated and will be much more appreciated in
time. It's like Dennis Potter does Bobby Darin. Kevin Spacey's
performances on stage and interpreting the songs is worth the price of
admission alone. I found Roger Ebert's review of the film to be
surprising perceptive and right on the money.

WALK THE LINE is highly overrated. I kind of hate it---and I love
country music and I love Johnny Cash. Joaquin Phoenix only seems like
Johnny Cash to folks who haven't spent many hours watching and
listening to Johnny Cash or know much about him. As Cash, Phoenix
ain't fit the drink the water off Luther's boots; his performance
lacks any hypnotic edge or consistent interest except that mustered by
the . Reese Witherspoon is merely passable (although I usually
admire her greatly as an actress), she's marginally better than
Phoenix; there is nothing exceptional about her performance. The
whole movie is by the numbers stuff that never really tells us why the
man's music was so important, focusing on yet another drug addict tale
instead with no new territory explored. The film's representations of
Sam Phillips and the other Sun Records people are a drippy joke with
the negligible exception of Jerry Lee Lewis. The filmmakers don't
seem to have studied the people Cash hung out with at all.
When it comes to show business bios of this ilk, COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER
and RAY are the standard to be met. COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER---the
prototype, and still the best country music biography ever made---is
light years better than WALK THE LINE. In COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER we
find Sissy Spacek channeling Loretta Lynn to perfection and Tommy Lee
Jones as Dolittle drives the movie like a crackling hot bulldozer.
RAY is on the same par, a wonder to behold. And---as I've pointed out
earlier---Jamie Foxx actually did do his own singing and playing in
the off-stage sequences and is so good at doing Ray Charles musically
that his work was blended seamlessly with the real thing.

NY DAILY NEWS...LLOYD GROVE'S LOWDOWN
Loose-lipped movie director Kevin Smith better hope he doesn't cross
paths with Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon or "Simple Life" star Nicole
Richie after his foulmouthed tale-telling the other night at the
University of Pennsylvania.
The 35-year-old guest speaker - best known for Clerks," "Chasing
Amy," "Dogma" and his disastrous Bennifer picture "Jersey Girl" -
told the Philadelphia audience about his insane dislike for 30-year-old
golden girl Witherspoon.
"I did vote for her for 'Walk the Line' because she was so good," Smith
confided. "I forgot how much I hated that c-!"
Smith also claimed, to roughly 1,000 laughing undergrads, that the
24-year-old Richie once lured Jason Mewes, a frequent character in
Smith's movies as the Jay of "Jay and Silent Bob," into a restroom for
a spirited quickie.
Richie's spokeswoman, Cindy Guagenti, told Lowdown: "She didn't know
his real name till I explained, then said: 'I met him but, ewwwww! Are
you kidding me? I've never ever had sex with him.'"
Campus journalist Shruti Dave, who covered Smith's remarks for the
Daily Pennsylvanian, said Smith described Witherspoon's alleged
rudeness before he considered casting a close friend of hers, actress
Selma Blair, for a movie role.
Smith recounted that he asked Blair, "You know where that b- lives? I
want to roll up on Weezy Reesey's house and egg that mother=ADf-
'cause f- her!" But Blair refused to supply the address and she
didn't get the part.
Witherspoon's PR rep declined to comment.
In two agitated E-mails to this column, Smith confirmed the essential
accuracy of the quotes. "The sentiment's roughly the same, but the
wording wasn't nearly that concise," he advised.
As for Richie and the 31-year-old Mewes - an admitted former heroin
addict who's been clean for the past three years - Smith quoted his
friend as saying that since he's been sober, he enjoys sex more
frequently and remembers it better, but it doesn't last as long.
Once, Smith continued at Penn, Richie "pulled Jay into a bathroom and
just sat on [him] and started going at it." Richie, an admitted
ex-heroin user herself, "had had a few drinks or something," Smith
added, before making an unprintable crack about the aftermath of the
alleged encounter.
Mewes' flack didn't respond to detailed messages.
Smith unhappily E-mailed: "That wasn't my exact wording, I don't
believe, but it's close. This is all secondhand information about
something that happened 2 1/2 years ago. ... [But] it came from Mewes."
The director cautioned: "It's not my story; it's Jay's. And it's one
thing to tell that tale out of school at a college Q&A [in the context
of a far larger, longer story about Mewes' hard journey from heroin
abuse to three years of total sobriety], and a completely different
thing to just pull the stuff about bathroom sex and run it in a gossip
column. ... [It] makes it all seem like unsavory locker-room chitchat."
Uh-huh. I'm sure all the Ivy League college kids found Smith's remarks
inspiring.

Reese Goes Hoarse After the Oscars
Walk the Line Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon croaked her way through a TV
interview with Oprah Winfrey yesterday because she was all partied out
following her Academy Awards success. The Best Actress winner was the first
guest on Winfrey's annual post-Oscars show and confessed she hadn't thought
to take care of her voice as she celebrated her victory. She told Winfrey,
"I just kind of floated through. I didn't get home until three o'clock in
the morning." Witherspoon told Oprah that her Oscar night was completed by a
call she received as she was preparing to leave for the ceremony from pal
and previous Academy Award winner Renee Zellweger. He explained, "She was so
lovely and so beautiful and gave me so much. She told me to keep my
shoulders back, stand up straight and if I have to go up there, to give it
my all and 'just be the queen that you are, honey.' She's just a wonderful
Southern love. It really means so much to be embraced by other artists."

NY POST...PAGE 6
March 4, 2006 -- WITH the Oscars being presented tomorrow night, the
odiferous stench of sour grapes is wafting over Mulholland Drive.
This year, it's mainly coming from the producers of a small,
little-seen Penelope Cruz picture who are mad as hell that the saucy
Spaniard - best known for having briefly "dated" Tom Cruise - wasn't
nominated for Best Actress.
In the Italian-made indie flick, "Don't Move," which had a limited
theatrical release last March, Cruz did her best to look her worst as a
dirty-haired, gap-toothed rape victim who falls for her assailant, a
smarmy brain surgeon.
"Her entire [Best Actress nomination] campaign was sabotaged," John
Lawrence Re, one of the producers, fumed to Page Six. "[The Academy]
voters decided to not take Penelope seriously as an actress. She's
always been a person considered to be exotic and fun. And I have to say
that that worked against her. I don't see any other explanation. She
wasn't even a dark horse nominee."
Re, the CEO of film company Northern Arts Entertainment, raged on about
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters. "The voters are
older people you've never heard of. That body of 1,200 voters don't
even go to the movies. They go on word of mouth. So, if everybody is
saying that Reese Witherspoon should win, odds are that's who they'll
vote for. That's how the voting is done."
Everybody is, in fact, saying that Witherspoon will win for her yokel
turn in "Walk the Line." The other nominees up for Best Actress are
Judi Dench, Felicity Huffman, Keira Knightley and Charlize Theron.
Re says Theron shares the same publicists as Cruz, PMK. He claims that
the firm decided it was a safer bet to put all its eggs in the Theron
basket for her role in the chicks-in-coal-mines drama "North Country."
While Post critic V.A. Musetto gave "Don't Move" only two stars,
critiquing that it was "insulting to women," he allowed that Cruz had a
"difficult role" that "shows she can act." Similarly, Times critic A.O.
Scott backhandedly acknowledged Cruz's chops, writing that the role was
her "most credible performance to date" and "suggests she may be a real
actress."
Cruz, who dated Cruise after they starred in "Vanilla Sky," is now
billing and cooing with bottle-blond bongo aficionado Matthew
McConaughey.

Reese Witherspoon Admits To Marriage Counselling
'Its normal to have problems'...
By: Lowri Williams on 3/3/2006
Oscar nominee Reese Witherspoon has revealed that she and her actor husband
Ryan Philippe have attended marriage counselling.
The couple who have two children and two careers have admitted that they
sometimes need help keeping their marriage on track.
Speaking to Grazia magazine the 'Walk The Line' star said: "Sure we've had
counselling. But it's healthy to deal with problems that come up when you're
living with another human being and forging your lives together.
"We see our marriage not as a free ride but as a partnership you work on.
You need to discuss things and be open about how to make each other feel
good and happy."
She also admitted that she was still learning about love and relationships:
"I don't know what I think about relationships and marriage.
"I don't know if people are meant to be together. I feel confused about it
sometimes because I feel like I see people who I think are going to be
together forever and they're not."
"Love is a beautiful thing but you've got to nurture it through the 50

voices."
"There are all kinds of singers out there who take their voices for granted,
mistreating it without even knowing it,"

Crossing over to role of a lifetime
February 27, 2006
An Oscar campaign demands an arduous shower routine, Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman tells
Christine Sams.
For the high-profile actors involved in this year's Oscars race, it can
sometimes feel like a presidential campaign.
"I haven't had to kiss babies yet or go to Ohio, both of which I would be
happy to do," says nominee Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman, with a laugh. "Of course, I've
never done a presidential campaign, I can only imagine. But I guess it is
[like that]. It's about getting people to see your movie."
When Huffman talks about wanting "people" to see her film Transamerica, she
has 5798 people specifically in mind - the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences voters, who can make or break her chances as an Oscar winner
for the best actress award.
Final voting for this year's awards closes on Tuesday in the US and stars
including Huffman have made relentless public and private outings in the
past month, carefully coiffed and dressed in designer clothes, conducting
high-profile media interviews and turning up for all-important red-carpet
appearances.
And that's not to mention staying squeaky clean - literally.
"I've never taken so many showers in my life," says Huffman, who chatted to
S exclusively from Los Angeles last week. "Your hair has to be clean every
day. I don't know about you, but I wash my hair maybe once every three days.
As a mum I wash my hair about once every 10 days if I'm lucky!"
Despite her serious bid for Oscars glory, Huffman can see the amusing side
of all the pre-Oscars grooming. "I guess the funniest part is sometimes you
put on these beautiful dresses that [then] look completely like crap. I have
to say I do think it's hilarious when that happens. I don't mean I want to
go out looking like that, but sometimes they're just so insane and made for
these six-foot-tall models, which I am not!"
Huffman, 43, is up against Reese Witherspoon'>Reese Witherspoon (Walk The Line), Dame Judi
Dench (Mrs Henderson Presents), Keira Knightley (Pride & Prejudice) and
Charlize Theron (North Country) for the actress in a leading role award at
this year's Oscars ceremony. At this stage, Huffman and Witherspoon are
frontrunners for the prestigious award.
"The difference between Reese Witherspoon'>Reese Witherspoon and Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman is there's a
good 15-year age difference," says Aili Riley, an associate reporter for US
Weekly magazine in Hollywood. "Felicity is even more serious [about winning
an Oscar] because she's been acting for 30 years . . . this acclaim and this
critical success in her career right now is very important.
"In US interviews [where 80 per cent of academy voters live], she's taking
everything very seriously. She used to joke a lot more, she was really
funny - and she still is very funny - but as she's doing the rounds for the
awards shows and the red carpets, she's focusing on staying more serious and
in that 'actor' mode," Riley says.
In Transamerica, Huffman plays the role of Bree - a transsexual man awaiting
sex change surgery. In other words, she is a woman playing a man yearning to
be a woman. When it comes to unusual acting transformations, it has Oscars
glory written all over it.
"This role was the part of a lifetime," Huffman says. "Not only because of
her internal journey where she's holding on to all these emotions that we
all share, despite the packaging. But also because of being a woman playing
a man becoming a woman. That pastry fold-over was irresistible."
The physical transformation was one of the biggest challenges of the role,
including voice training to lower her vocal register and wearing wigs and
make-up that made Huffman look authentically transsexual.
"In terms of being an actor, that was certainly part of the appeal," she
says. "But did I ever think that anyone more than my mother and 10 people
would see it? No."
In fact, the film was such a low-budget production by Hollywood standards
that Duncan Tucker, the writer and director of Transamerica, initially asked
his mother to mortgage her home to finance it.
Because Huffman's role in the independent film has been in direct
competition with stars backed by major Hollywood studios (including
Witherspoon), her Oscars campaign has focused on the film festival circuit,
public appearances and intimate media interviews with presenters including
Oprah Winfrey.
"With a small movie like Transamerica you kind of need the push behind it
because it's an art house film," Huffman says. "We don't have any studio
money behind us."
"They know the first job and most important job is for the movie to be seen
[by voters]," says Ric Robertson, executive administrator of the Academy. He
says the jostling behind the scenes for voters' attention was now the norm
within the industry.
"I mean, this is arguably the most famous award in the world," Robertson
says. "But [the politicking] continues to amaze me and I've worked here for
25 years."
For Huffman, a key asset is credibility. She has decades of experience in
film, television and stage acting. Her marriage to William H. Macy (whom she
calls Bill), a highly respected actor, is another bonus.
"I don't know if I'm on the same level as Bill, that's for sure, but I
certainly hold onto his coat-tails," Huffman says. "The respect for him is
phenomenal."
But she says there is no competitiveness between her and her husband when it
comes to acting achievements.
"Bill has always cherished me and wanted me to shine and now is no
exception," she says. "Gosh, he's always 100 per cent behind me. He came
with me to England and Chicago, flying everywhere, on these eight-, 10- and
11-hour flights. I married well," she says.
While the star herself seems warm, relaxed and in good spirits ahead of the
Academy Awards - she is cheerfully eating porridge while we're chatting over
the phone - US commentators say Huffman has carefully positioned herself in
the minds of voters as an "actor's actor", away from her globally recognised
role on Desperate Housewives.
"I would say for Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman in particular, she's always tried to
market herself as a very serious actress. Even in Desperate Housewives she's
always been the 'actor' of the show," says Riley."With all the awards for
Desperate Housewives and now Transamerica and the Oscar nomination, I think
she's, even more, going to try and break away from the fluffy side of her
work and going into the more dramatic, serious roles. I think she feels like
she's got a big break in this role and with all the acclaim she's gotten,
she's trying to keep serious and take all of it in. She's getting really
caught up in it, I think."
But Huffman insists she is equally as proud of her work on Desperate
Housewives and is not shying away from talking about her television role
simply for Oscars credibility.
"That's not how I see it," she says. "I love Desperate Housewives, I don't
want to pull the focus away from it. I'm so proud and honoured to be on the
show."
But in terms of campaigning for an Oscar, she's still learning. "I know very
little of this because it's the first time I've done it," she says.
As for winning the prized trophy? "I don't know how it would feel," she
says.
"I know how this sounds, but honest to God it just feels so amazing being
nominated. I just can't believe I get to go to the Oscars as myself and not
as a seat filler," she adds, laughing.
"So the prospect of winning . . . well, I don't really go there. I just
think 'My God, this great movie means I get to go to the Academy Awards.
It's fantastic.' "
The transformers
The path to Oscars glory can mean a demanding physical transformation.
Nicole Kidman, The Hours
When Denzel Washington announced Nicole Kidman had won her Oscar "by a
nose", he was referring to the ugly prosthetic nose Kidman donned to play
writer Virginia Woolf. By playing down her looks - and completely
transforming her face and hair - Kidman gained the ultimate acting accolade.
"I actually would not have cast myself in the role if I was casting the
film," Kidman told reporters. "[But]I think roles fall into your lap at
certain times when they're meant to happen."
Charlize Theron, Monster
After putting on weight and donning special effects make-up, Charlize Theron
switched from being a Hollywood glamazon to a convincing serial killer,
Aileen Wournos. Theron's previous roles had relegated her as a pretty
leading lady, but the Monster role upped her credibility as a serious actor
and Hollywood heavyweight. The actor refused to wear a fat suit for the
role, instead gaining the kilos necessary to portray Wournos on screen.
Hilary Swank, Boys Don't Cry
In one of film's most extraordinary transformations, Swank played Brandon
Teena (otherwise known as Teena Brandon) in Boys Don't Cry. With a story
centred on a young woman pretending to be male - and the ensuing local
controversy and violence towards her - Swank lowered her voice register, had
her hair chopped and donned male clothing. She had previously acted in glam
TV series Beverly Hills 90210, so the credibility leap was one of the most
notable in Oscars history.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Shakespeare in Love
She might have been the girliest of girls, sobbing in her pink dress at the
Oscars podium, but Paltrow posed as a young man for her role in Shakespeare
In Love. Although her character was also shown as a beautiful woman, with
tumbling blonde locks, Paltrow dressed in men's clothing for parts of the
film and changed her voice. It was a convincing portrayal of a young woman
disguising herself to indulge her love of theatre.
Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman'>Felicity Huffman, Transamerica
She might not have an Oscars trophy yet, but Huffman is among frontrunners
this year because of her transsexual role in the indie film Transamerica.
Huffman's mannerisms, voice and physical appearance are entirely altered in
the film, with the actress convincing as a transsexual man wanting to become
a woman, via a sex change operation. She also wears a prosthetic penis for
the role. One of her most memorable lines in the film is when her troubled
character, Bree, says: "I hate my penis, it disgusts me."

Body of Witherspoon Paparazzo Identified
The body of a paparazzo facing battery charges in an incident involving
actress Reese Witherspoon has been positively identified by the Los Angeles
County Coroner's Office. Coroners have confirmed the decomposed body they
found in Brentwood, California, earlier this month was that of snapper Todd
Kevin Wallace. The cause of death will be announced following toxicology
tests. An issue for the 44-year-old photographer's arrest was issued in
December after he failed to show up for a bail hearing, relating to charges
in the Witherspoon incident. The photographer allegedly became angry when
Witherspoon and her friends declined to be photographed last September at a
children's amusement park. Prosecutors in the case claim Wallace became
aggressive, striking a five-year-old girl with his camera, and shoving two
park employees out of the way. Authorities had been searching for Wallace
for two months and feared he had fled the country.
- Celebrity Gossip
- "Attending an all-girls school has its advantages, there are no inhibitions. You can walk to school with your zit cream on and your hair in rollers and nobody cares."
- "While making Legally Blonde 2, I had like 50 outfit changes. It was great! I'm real into the whole "girlie" thing, it was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it."
- "I'm not perfect! I'm human. I make mistakes. But I try to be as conscious as I can about things I should be. If I'm going to do something commercial and mainstream and made for the masses, I just believe you can make those kinds of films with quality - and good ideas and good intentions. There's a lot of negativity out there."
- "As far as being in the spotlight and under public scrutiny, a lot of that's about how much you put yourself out there. It's not like we go to every premiere and every celebrity function and every charity auction. We really just try to maintain our privacy and never let our public persona get out of hand."
- "People want to try and move you into a place where you can be easily identifiable by every woman in America - to be this very likeable woman in a romatic comedy. And it's really hard for me. I just don't see myself as the girl that everybody likes. I never have been and I don't know how to be that person."
- "I grew up in Tennessee. We didn't know what Louis Vuitton was. I had to order all my prom outfits out of catalogs."
- [talking about the movie business]: "The battles that we face in this business aren't financial, but they are moral. And I certainly think that the longer you can keep your values, and your morality intact, and keep your head on your shoulders about what is important at the end of the day, you can get the most out of this business and really emerge with something wonderful."
- [talking about Pleasantville (1998)]: "We were thrilled for just the three nominations we got, but obviously it's a little sad. I went through so many press junkets with people saying they loved it. And Joan Allen was robbed but she can't get nominated every year. She's an inspiration for every young actress. She has that calm and reserve about herself and makes you think she appreciates the normal things of everyday. Then she transforms into this character that's so different."
- [talking about motherhood and her baby]: "I feel good, I'm proud of Election and very proud of this [her child]. It couldn't be a better time. It's always the right time W_hen it happens. You make it the right time."
- [talking about Ryan Phillippe]: "I'm lucky to find a person to share my life, and the best friend I'll ever have."
- [talking about how she choose the films she will be in]: "I have a weird process, but the main thing is like this: I hear her voice in my head. There are a lot of wonderful scripts my agents can't believe I pass on, but I do because I can't hear the voice. It doesn't appeal to me then. I'm really careful. Unless I hear the voice, I can't do it."
- [on having a baby]: "Obviously, this isn't the time in my life that I would have chosen to do this, but I feel like life gives you these challenges for a reason. I feel so happy and glad to be in the place that I am. I really feel blessed. This is something I need to face and take control of."
