By DAVID GERMAIN, AP Movie Writer
1 hour, 11 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES - Animated autos retained the pole position as "Cars" came
in No. 1 at the box office for a second weekend with $31.2 million,
holding off the wrestling comedy "Nacho Libre" and another car tale,
"The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift."
"Cars," from Disney and Pixar, beat a rush of new movies, lifting its
10-day domestic total to $114.5 million, according to studio estimates
Sunday.
Paramount's "Nacho Libre," starring Jack Black as a cook at a Mexican
orphanage who takes up wrestling to buy better food for the kids,
debuted in second place with $27.5 million.
The third in the "Fast and the Furious" racing franchise, Universal's
"Tokyo Drift" opened at No. 3 with $24.1 million. The movie stars
Lucas Black as a speed freak who gets caught up in Japan's illegal
racing scene.
"Speed" co-stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock reunited for the
Warner Bros. romantic drama "The Lake House," which took in $13.7
million to place fourth. The time-bending tale casts Reeves and Bullock
as pen pals corresponding with each other two years apart.
The weekend's other new wide release, 20th Century Fox's "Garfield: A
Tail of Two Kitties," opened weakly with $7.2 million, coming in sixth.
The live-action and animated sequel features the voice of Bill Murray
as the comic-strip fat cat.
"Garfield" had been competing for the same family audience as "Cars,"
whose voice cast includes Owen Wilson and Paul Newman in a comedy
about a race car that learns the value of slowing down.
"I guess the family audience picked their favorite and decided that
this is what it was going to be," said Chuck Viane, head of
distribution at Disney, which recently bought its animation partner
Pixar, the maker of "Finding Nemo," "The Incredibles" and the "Toy
Story" movies.
The week's two sequels came in well below their predecessors. "The Fast
and the Furious," with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, opened with $40.1
million in 2001, and Walker's 2003 followup "2 Fast 2 Furious" debuted
with $50.5 million.
"Garfield: The Movie" took in $21.7 million over opening weekend in
2004.
In limited release, the IFC Films crossword-puzzle documentary
"Wordplay" opened solidly with $34,959 at two New York City theaters.
The film, featuring interviews with such crossword enthusiasts as
former President Bill Clinton, comic Jon Stewart and the musical
duo the Indigo Girls, expands to more theaters Friday.
Hollywood's overall business rose for the fifth-straight weekend. The
top 12 movies took in $139.1 million, up 7 percent from the same
weekend last year, when "Batman Begins" opened with $48.7 million.
Estimated ticket sales were for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and
Canadian theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc. Final
figures will be released Monday.
1. "Cars," $31.2 million.
2. "Nacho Libre," $27.5 million.
3. "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," $24.1 million.
4. "The Lake House," $13.7 million.
5. "The Break-Up," $9.5 million.
6. "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties," $7.2 million.
7. "X-Men: The Last Stand," $7.15 million.
8. "The Omen," $5.35 million.
9. "The Da Vinci Code," $5 million.
10. "Over the Hedge," $4.05 million.

Keanu's tragic life
June 07, 2006
KEANU Reeves has bared his soul about his tragedy-stricken life.
The actor, whose baby daughter was stillborn in 2000 a year before the
child's mother died in a car crash, told US magazine Parade he was still
grieving.
Opening his heart about his devastation, he said he continued to feel alone,
and angrily described the loss he had suffered as "not fair" and "absurd".
Reeves said he still wanted to get married and have children - but that it
would take time.
The 41-year-old's troubles began as a toddler, when his father abandoned his
British mother and the family.
His best friend, actor River Phoenix, died of a drug overdose in 1993 and
his sister Kim, 39, is fighting leukaemia.
Reeves met Jennifer Syme at a party in 1998 and fell in love. She was
pregnant within a year, but eight months later the baby was stillborn and
Syme suffered deep postnatal depression.
Although their romance cooled, she and the Matrix star remained close.
Then in April 2001, Syme was killed instantly when her car crashed.
"Grief changes shape, but it never ends," Reeves, who stars in The Lake
House with Sandra Bullock this summer, told Parade.
"People have a misconception that you can deal with it and say, 'It's gone,
and I'm better'. They're wrong.
"When the people you love are gone, you're alone.
"I miss being a part of their lives and them being part of mine. I wonder
what the present would be like if they were here - what we might have done
together. I miss all the great things that will never be.
"Damn it! It's not fair! It's absurd. "All you can do is hope that grief
will be transformed and, instead of feeling pain and confusion you will be
together again in memory, that there will be solace and pleasure there, not
just loss."
He added however that he felt he was at a "turning point".
"I don't want to flee from life," Reeves said. "I know the beauty of it."
He said he had bought his first house after turning 40, a "makeover" for
him.
Asked if loss had changed him, Reeves said: "I'm trying not to be alone so
much. And, man, it's a struggle.
"I want to get married. I want to have kids. That's at the top of the
mountain. I've got to climb the mountain first. I'll do it. Just give me
some time."

NEW YORK - Keanu Reeves says he's lonely and wants to get married and
have children, in an upcoming issue of Parade magazine. The 41-year-old
actor says he continues to mourn the loss of his stillborn daughter in
1999 and the death of the baby's mother, Jennifer Syme, in a car crash
in 2001.
Syme had a small part in the 1997 David Lynch film, "Lost Highway."
She and Reeves had reportedly broken up in 2000.
"When the people you love are gone, you're alone," he tells the
magazine. "I miss being a part of their lives and them being a part of
mine. I wonder what the present would be like if they were here -
what we might have done together. I miss all the great things that will
never be."
He adds: "It's not fair! It's absurd."
"I'm trying not to be alone so much," Reeves says. "And man, it's a
struggle. I want to get married. I want to have kids. That's at the top
of the mountain. I've got to climb the mountain first. I'll do it. Just
give me some time."
But Reeves, who stars with Sandra Bullock in "The Lake House," which
opens June 16, and the animated thriller "A Scanner Darkly," set for
release next month, says he's reached a "turning point" in his personal
life.
"I think, after loss, life requires an act of reclaiming," he says.
"You have to reject being overwhelmed. Life has to go on."
He has bought his first home, a step in a new "makeover" to establish
roots in one location. In childhood, he watched his mother, Patricia,
move the family many times and adopted that way of life.
"I've had a vagabond life," he says. "There is a bit of the gypsy in
me, and living that way seemed to make sense. I couldn't settle down.
... Then I turned 40. That birthday is hard, perhaps because you know
you're grown-up."
Reeves also starred in "The Matrix" movies.

Aniston 'sickened' by baby news
Thursday Jun 1 10:00 AEST
Jennifer Aniston felt "nauseous" when she got a phone call telling her
Brangelina's baby had been born.
But Aniston later told friends she was relieved that the "sick triangle" was
finally over and she could move on with her life.
Her ex-Brad Pitt was in the operating room as new love Angelina Jolie gave
birth to baby daughter Shiloh Nouvel Pitt-Jolie.

Aniston, 37, got the news of Pitt's baby on May 27 from an associate from
Plan B, the production company she once owned with Pitt.
"The nauseous feeling I expected to have when I heard the news is smaller
than I thought," Star magazine quotes Aniston as telling a friend.
"I'm sick to death of having paparazzi ask me how I feel.
"How do they think I feel? I've wanted this to be over for so long. Now,
hopefully, my place in this sick triangle will be replaced with the baby.
"I'm finally going to be able to make my own decisions and not have to
factor in all this bulls**t."
Aniston also told pals that she fears Pitt will end up raising the baby on
his own, according to the magazine.
"I really do wish Brad the best of luck because he'll need it when he's
raising that child alone and she's off somewhere adopting another Third
World baby.
"I do wish Brad and Angelina luck. Passion is fleeting and their whole
relationship is based on passion, however misguided it seems to me."
Pitt and Jolie are holed up in the impoverished African country of Namibia
after the birth of Shiloh.
It is expected they will return to Pitt's luxurious Malibu home in June to
raise Shiloh.

NY DAILY NEWS...RUSH AND MOLLOY
Hollywood's hot couples were out in force on Oscar night. But while
some bronzed themselves in camera flash, others dodged the shooters.
Madonna did her best to dispel rumors of marital discord by making sure
every photographer outside the Vanity Fair party got a picture of her
with smiling husband Guy Ritchie. Likewise, reunited couple Nicollette
Sheridan and Michael Bolton trumpeted their love.
"I'm a lucky palooka," Bolton told us as he admired his Desperate
Housewife. He even sang to her: "Love is lovelier, the second time
around ..."
Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn, on the other hand, came =ADseparately
to editor Graydon Carter's exclusive party at Morton's. Seeing him,
Aniston screamed, "Baby!" and ran over to her big lug for a long kiss.
Later, they evaded the lensmen by sneaking out a side exit.
George Clooney and Krista Allen also kept photographers guessing. The
Best Supporting Actor celebrated his win at Dan Tana's with Madonna and
Guy, Rachel Weisz and Darren Aronofsky, and other friends. But "The
Insider's" Marc Malkin says he heard that Clooney and Allen also
slipped out the back while the Ritchies distracted paparazzi.
Among the other devoted duos at the Vanity Fair bash: Nicole Kidman and
Keith Urban (touching each other under a table); Jennifer Lopez and
Marc Anthony; Sandra Bullock and Jesse James; Taye Diggs and Idina
Menzel; Rachel Griffiths and Andrew Taylor; Jessica Alba and Cash
Warren; Jennifer Jason Leigh and Noah Baumbach; Brittany Murphy and Joe
Mancuso, and Kerry Washington and David Moscow.
Revlon billionaire Ron Perelman turned up stag at the party, where he
hit it off a few years back with soon-to-be-ex-wife Ellen Barkin. Keanu
Reeves came without Lynn Collins. Hilary Swank, who's been working her
way back to hubby Chad Lowe, arrived without him - but she was
wearing her wedding ring.
Swank, who presented Philip Seymour Hoffman with his Best Actor trophy,
reassured the "Capote" star when he forgot to thank his girlfriend,
Mimi O'Donnell. "No one forgot like I forgot," said Swank, who famously
neglected to mention Lowe when she won her first Oscar. "But people
will understand."
Hoffman told us the whole experience was "nerve-racking." (At least he
didn't have to "bark" his acceptance speech, as he once promised
director Bennett Miller and writer Dan Futterman in a drunken moment.
"They let me off the hook, but said, 'If you do bark, we will meow,"
recalled Hoffman.)
Of course, Robert Altman was there with his wife of 47 years, Kathryn.
Having revealed in his Oscar speech that he had a heart transplant 10
years ago, Altman admitted that he worried then that "no one would hire
me." Kathryn recalled how they got USA Today to "correct" a Variety
story reporting the surgery. "We denied it like hell," she said. "And
his career went on. It had a happy ending."
Elsewhere at the Vanity Fair party, worlds collided when novelist
Salman Rushdie hung out with Three 6 Mafia, who won gold for "It's Hard
Out Here for a Pimp." "That's the song I was really rooting for," said
Rushdie. "I really liked 'Hustle and Flow.'"
Rapper Juicy Jay was not as familiar with Rushdie's "Satanic Verses,"
but he did like the poetry of Rushdie's wife, Padma Lakshmi, as the
model and actress shook to the music on top of an ottoman. "Oooh," said
Juicy.

got to know him inside and out, and, well, the rest is history and almost 9

Philip Seymour Hoffman as author Capote
By DAVID GERMAIN -- Associated Press
TORONTO - The hesitation Philip Seymour Hoffman felt about playing Truman
Capote was not unlike the uncertainty audiences might feel over seeing a
movie about the man who wrote the true-crime classic In Cold Blood.
Hoffman wondered how he would hold up in the title role of Capote,
impersonating the author's weirdly effete, self-important mannerisms and
cadences, and questioned whether moviegoers would want to watch him do it.
"I did have hesitations and just knew that if I made the story the main
character and really worked on that to fulfil it in a very personal and
soulful way, that all the technical stuff about playing him would become
secondary for people watching the movie," Hoffman said.
The result could be a breakout lead performance for Hoffman, a character
actor who has earned enormous respect with idiosyncratic supporting turns in
such movies as Happiness, Almost Famous, Punch-Drunk Love, The Talented Mr.
Ripley and Magnolia.
Hoffman, 38, undergoes a remarkable transformation as the bespectacled,
dapper Capote - a raconteur with a wily, grandiose style of talking and a
need to ensconce himself at the centre of attention.
The performance may put Hoffman at the forefront of the best-actor race at
the Academy Awards the way Jamie Foxx's portrayal of Ray Charles did last
year in Ray.
Hoffman recalled growing up seeing Capote in his unproductive later years,
holding forth on TV talk shows in the 1970s. His recollections were hazy,
though, until he reacquainted himself with Capote's off-putting demeanour by
watching interviews and Albert and David Maysles' documentary A Visit With
Truman Capote.
At that point, having agreed to do the movie, Hoffman began moaning, "Oh,
what the hell have I got myself into?" he said, laughing.
"That's always what I heard about people dealing with Capote," Hoffman told
The Associated Press at the Toronto International Film Festival, where
Capote played. "Anyone said when they first encountered Capote that it was a
jaw-dropping thing, like, 'Who the hell is this guy?' You can't get past the
way he's talking.
"But because of his intelligence, his wit and his insightfulness and his
kind of all-consuming warmth, that would go away. So I knew if I had that in
mind and I knew if I had a genuineness about it, that the majority of people
watching it would have the same experience."
The film centres on what would become the most agonizing period of Capote's
life, as he spent more than five years researching In Cold Blood, a
non-fiction novel about the 1959 murders of the Clutters, a farm family in
Kansas.
Capote, previously known best as the author of Breakfast at Tiffany's,
became obsessed with the killers, particularly Perry Smith (Clifton Collins
Jr.), who along with Dick Hickock (Mark Pellegrino) executed the Clutters
after a robbery that nabbed only a few dollars from the family farmhouse.
Aided by lifelong pal Harper Lee (Catherine Keener), who later would depict
the boyish Capote in her novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Capote befriends the
Kansas investigator (Chris Cooper) leading the Clutter case, crossing the
line from observer to active participant as Smith and Hickock's death-row
appeals move through the courts.
Based on Gerald Clarke's biography, the film depicts Capote as a man torn
between devotion to his lifelong companion Jack Dunphy (Bruce Greenwood),
perverse love for the killer Smith and a desire to see the two murderers
executed so he would have a suitable ending for his book.
Hoffman plays Capote as friend, accessory, artist, manipulator, liar, cheat
and sympathizer. After the killers were put to death, In Cold Blood was
published to great acclaim in 1966, followed a year later by a film version
featuring Robert Blake as Perry Smith.
The strain of Capote's research left him broken, a heavy drinker and pill
popper whose writing became sporadic and uninspired. Though he published an
acclaimed collection of stories a few years before his death in 1984, Capote
generally played the intellectual buffoon in his final two decades.
"Somebody said the other day, at the end of the movie, you feel like Capote
committed a crime, and that's exactly right," Hoffman said. "That's why the
film works so well. You really have this sense that he's the one who
committed the crime, and I think deep down inside, that's how he felt, too.
That's something he could never come to terms with."
An athlete growing up near Rochester, N.Y., Hoffman got into acting after he
was sidelined by a wrestling injury. An acclaimed stage performer, Hoffman
moved into small film and TV roles, working his way up to solid supporting
parts in Twister, Boogie Nights and The Big Lebowski.
Hoffman memorably co-starred as a drag queen opposite Robert De Niro in
Flawless and had the leads in the small independent flicks Love Liza and
Owning Mahowny.
Capote, though, hinged entirely on Hoffman, said director Bennett Miller,
who along with the film's screenwriter Dan Futterman has been friends with
Hoffman since the three met at a theatre program in 1984.
"He was the only choice. He was going to do it or we weren't going to do
it," Miller said. "I've known Phil for 21 years now, and I feel I know him
inside and out, and other than him being an incredible actor, a shamanlike
actor, I will say that everything in this movie that gets revealed through
this character are things that Phil knows.
"Meaning he's not putting it on. He's more letting it out. He learned the
mechanicals of how to play this guy, but the spirit that gets expressed
through the mechanicals is his. He owns that."
Capote is the first of two movies dealing with the author's In Cold Blood
years. The second - an as-yet-untitled film starring Toby Jones as Capote
and Sandra Bullock as Harper Lee and featuring Gwyneth Paltrow as singer
Peggy Lee - is due out in fall 2006.
By that time, Hoffman will have moved on to his next gig, playing the
villain to Tom Cruise's heroic agent in next summer's Mission: Impossible 3.
"To play a bad guy in an action movie is something I've never done, and I
don't know if I'll ever do it again. So this is really that opportunity, and
it's the perfect place to do it, perfect people to do it with," said
Hoffman, gushing over the prospect of mixing it up with Cruise.
