I think the problem with Katharine is, as I've said, her schtick is as
yawn-worthy as the rest of them. The show needs to remember that it's

The problem with Taylor is that he's not winning this thing on the
basis of talent - he is just that off-the-wall yutz that people might

Think more Shania Twain crossed with Britney Spears. One of the
reasons I do think she might win this thing if it just destructs is
that they can make money with her. Just spread her legs and make her

I was thinking more along the lines of top 40 hits. They were all on
her first album, right? After that she had a big enough following to
make platinum just by selling albums to her loyalists and people wishing
she'd repeat her breakout success. Then she was on concert tours for
several consecutive years, which can earn awards and recognition, even
though she wasn't creating new material (not counting dances).
I'm afraid that she's like George Lucas, doing all her most creative
work up front and then just recapitulating it ad infinitum for the rest
of her career. Lucas has been creatively bankrupt since "Raiders of the
Lost Ark," in '82, but he's done a lot of work, made a fortune and
generated a gigantic new fan following.
He's still been out of ideas since '82. I liked "American Grafitti"
*far* more than I liked any of his "Star Wars" sequels.

JUSTIN HAWKINS'>JUSTIN HAWKINS: 'LANGE SAID TONE IT DOWN, SO WE CAMPED IT UP'
THE DARKNESS frontman JUSTIN HAWKINS'>JUSTIN HAWKINS was so incensed when legendary music
producer ROBERT 'MUTT' LANGE suggested they tone down their flamboyant rock
to break America, he decided to record the campest album he could.
The British rockers met with Lange - famed for producing classic albums for
AC/DC and DEF LEPPARD and, more recently, for his wife SHANIA TWAIN - to
discuss recording their second disc ONE WAY TICKET TO HELL AND BACK.
But Hawkins was appalled when Lange asked for a songwriting credit and then
suggested ways to appeal to the US marketplace.
He says, "We had one dinner with him, and before he'd even heard a note of
what we'd written, he insisted on having a writing credit.
"But what he said to us was the thing that we have to eliminate about
ourselves in order to break America - which is the least of our concerns -
is to 'take away any ambiguity' as to what we are and really dumb down.
"The crux of his argument was: we're too gay, and we really needed to get
our balls out and make this sound like a rock album.
"But when people are telling you you're too sophisticated and you need to
dumb down, the first thing you say is, 'Let's be more gay!' "I want to be
massive in America on our terms."

Twain wins approval to build ranch mansion
29/06/2005 - 08:32:46
Canadian-born country music star Shania Twain has won permission to build a
mansion and other buildings on her New Zealand sheep farm, despite
complaints the complex would not blend in with the landscape.
Queenstown Lakes District Council approved the development - including a
large house with attached garage, two guest cottages and ancillary
structures - on the alpine ranch, Motatapu Station, on South Island, said
planning commissioner Trevor Shiels.
Twain and her husband Robert "Mutt" Lange applied for permission to build
the development last year, but met with staunch opposition from locals who
said the diamond-shaped complex would be visible for miles.
In its objections to the plans, the Upper Clutha Environmental Society said
people should be stopped from "slamming mansions onto leasehold land".
"It doesn't matter that it's Shania Twain," said society president Julian
Hayward last year. "We get a lot of people trying to put buildings in
inappropriate locations and we object to all of them."
Nevertheless, the local council approved the development, subject to 17
conditions, Shiels said.
Among the conditions, Twain must immediately replace any dying plant or
tree, provide a water supply for fire fighting and agree to plant the same
mountain grasses as those growing on surrounding land so the complex blends
in with the landscape.
There was no word on whether Twain and Lange would agree to the conditions
and opponents of the plan were not immediately available for comment today.
Last year Twain and Lange won approval to lease Motatapu Station - 61,000
acres of rugged and scenic farmland - for 33 years with automatic renewal
rights. The pastoral leasehold farm land near the tourist town of Wanaka
cost them 21.4 million New Zealand dollars (?12.5m).
Wanaka is 505 miles south-west of the capital, Wellington.

If the outfits she wears are any indication, I can see why the locals
are concerned. I can't put my finger on it but she never quite gets it

fom an esthetic point of view having lived in LA and seen some of the
monstrosities which pass a homes, I can't blame people from not wanting a
giant designer home breaking up the scenery beside them, anymore than I
would complain about people not wanting an archetecture magazine designed
industrial facility beside them. I don't know the New Zealand taxation
system but I know what a 15 million dollar home near you does to your taxes
in states like New York where you can be driven off your land because you
cant afford the taxes if a few millionaires build near you.

SHANIA TWAIN CAUSES CONTROVERSY WITH NEW ZEALAND HOME PLANS
New Zealand officials are trying to stop country superstar Shania Twain and
her producer husband Robert "Mutt" Lange from developing their new South
Island home, because they fear it will look awful.
The celebrity couple reportedly has paid $15 million for a sprawling Merino
sheep farm, and has big plans to turn the place into their dream estate.
But local architects and developers are opposed to the couple's plans
because they fear they're not in harmony with the local landscape, and will
be visible for miles.
A major planning meeting has been called to discuss and decide the matter
next week.

I agree with you...but its also the fault of today's performer. Their
desire is to become famous and make a lot of money. They don't learn to
play instruments or take singing lessons. Professionalism and honing
one's craft is not necessary to be successful in the music business today.
Being photogenic, normal weight (not overweight), able to move a little
to the beat, is all it takes today. Enjoy your success folks, it lasts
about 5 yrs.

damn good. Gwen is more on the order of Shania Twain, if she wasn't cute and
or sexy no one would listen to any of her stuff. I applaud her success as a
show business personality and a star, which I think she's managed pretty
well, but if No Doubt was a thin soup musically, Gwen by herself is stone
soup, there just isnt anything there that couldn't be thrown together with
ProTools and any of the hundreds of thousands of girl singers looking for a
break.
I know I'm wasting my time repeating my complaints about the music
industry and this isn't personal towards Gwen Stefani who seems like a nice
enough person, but one of truly awful things about working in music for over
forty years is that you can see and hear crud, artifice and just plain
garbage in hyper-speed, even before it gets passed your ears and eyes,
you're mind goes, click, that's junk! Damn it, change the channel! Channel
changed, click, that's junk, change the channel! Channel changed. Click,
that's junk!
And pretty soon I'm kicking the damn dashboard on throwing the stinking
radio or record player, or cd player out the window like some drunken
insane, dark curly-haired redneck version of Stanley Kowalski.
I could buy a damn good motorcycle for all the radios and mucous spewing
music machines I've smashed to bits because of this.
It's not the people listening's fault or the kids who don't know any
better. I don't know what happened but I have noticed one thing, from the
moment in the 1960's when the government shifted focus from education to
integration money for music programs in schools dried up and the number of
kids with musical skills in the ghetto began dropping.
When I was living in Philly in the late sixties, every fifth or sixth
kid you met could play an insturment, and they virtually all knew harmony
and vocalizing. You could walk down the street and hear do wop singing and
music drifting from open windows and doors and it wasn't all just singing
along with radio. It was the same with country kids picking and every other
kid in the burbs with a Sears guitar and amp was forming a rock band. And so
much of it was organic and real and heartfelt that sometimes it felt like
static before a lightening strike.
I know the talent and or desire is still out there, but the music
industry is like some kind of super leech in a horror movie, that grabs
fresh music and sucks the life out of it before it has a chance to fully
come to life.
No Gwen, you're not Cher. Even Cher isn't Cher anymore. Sadly Gwen,
you're an abortion.

I've heard those same stories, from my firends in the Nashville recording
studios. Not surprising, but I've also heard rumours, from people who
probably know the truth about all this, that shanias rags to riches story
is half bullshit, and she is as image manipulated and contrived as Avril
Lavigne, another faux "artist".

No one who has ever worked in the industry and seen how horrible it really
is, you mean. The American Idol watching public. They dont care, nor could
they even understand it.
What was your band? Did your record ever come out?

Yeah, they were pretty good. I wasn't putting Ska down as music because
I kind of liked it, I was just observing that the Ska form had always had a
narrow niche.
Since the late seventies niche marketing has ruled more and more in
America and true popular hits have all but ceased to exist.
Trying not to get conspiratorial or to inside industry here, but I think
that the deliberate American recoding and radio and MTV video industry's
crushing of Punk and the over-focus on New Wave/synth pop had a lot to do
the corporate anger over the demise of Disco/pop and corporate rock, the
last because the industry that controlled what the listener heard thought
itself "hip" but was really very staid and self serving in it's comfortable
positions of power.
Coupled with the fact that a huge amount of money was going up the noses
of corporate record company people and the corporate musicians who were in a
formulaic hit-making machine which was caught off guard by the paradigm
shift of video, which totally locked in the new niche music outline (Anyone
remember when Jacko was the only black on MTV?) it totally sub-ordinated the
old semi-organic hit occurrence pattern, and caused the reactionary rise of
image as apposed to music with people like Duran Duran and Madonna, who
combined the elements of controlled Disco production with the singing teen
idol imagery of earlier pop and teenybopper pop money making formulas.
Not dismissing Duran Duran or Madonna musically but they were at the
beginning of the end of the older hit paradigm which, with all it's faults,
payola, occasional deliberate superficiality etc., did include diversity as
part of it's content, and would have allowed anything that the radio
requesters, jukebox players, and record buyers wanted to be included on play
lists, as it had been in the early 60's to the late 60's, be it rock, r&b,
folk, country, soul, and variants local, international, or ethnic.
Most people forget that at one time, recordings popular in Europe or
South America, or South Africa might show up on the American charts, for
instance, non-English Speaking Italian singer Rita Pavone's "Just Once
More," various Brazilian artists like Eliana Bookman, and even Euro-pop,
from Jacque Brell and Charles Aznavour to Jane Birkin and Noel Harrison, who
all had charted hits in America as did Millie Small.
It wasn't just video that killed the radio star. The division between
pop and alternative radio which originally represented counter-culture
tastes but which unfortunately gave rise to drug rock, which eventually
heavy metal was also a carefully managed affair. There was no zeitgeist
driving musical tastes just manipulated product.
There were cross pollenizations of styles and outside influences now
and then, well into the seventies, but without the mostly controlled rock
press (contrary to popular opinion the so-called counter culture free press
was about as free as a trained pigeon) influence on the industry, it's
doubtful that even some established superstars such as David Bowie would
have made a dent outside eclectic circles.
I realize I'm totally off topic, but the music industry is probably the
most fascist form of show business on earth. Certainly it's the only one I
know of where people have been murdered for not co-operating with guys in
pinstriped suits, and I don't mean hip-hop and Shug Knight.
Ask Tom Petty whose house was torched with him and his family in it,
shortly after he had the hubris to suggest that Warner drop the cost of an
upcoming album by a dollar.
I myself, realized too late that I had sold my soul when I was a kid by
signing exclusive contracts which were unbreakable unless I produced that
elusive hit record, which may or may not have happened, but which I'll never
know, because me and or my group's only real recordings were deliberately
submarined or mishandled in such egregious ways it was obviously deliberate.
Musical success has virtually nothing to do with talent or even the
music but has everything to do with the whims of a very few people who rule
recording with the corruption, decadence and brutality of renaissance
princes.
Punk was largely denied as were many sub-form attempts to return rock to
it's roots, because a small number of people were offended or insulted by
the challenge to the corporate machine, by a music originating from outside
the control of the corporate boardroom and the manipulation of their hand
picked producers.
Think names, from Tommy Mottola to Al Kooper to producers like Don Was
and Mutt Lange who all secretly spawned their mutant musical tadpoles in an
evil corporate slew.
A small "eyes only" secret that happened in corporate form of country
music. Shania Twain's rise and her so-called outsider image were part of a
carefully orchestrated corporate maneuver and formula testing that took
place within a power shift that was happening in the industry at the time.
I have no idea whether Shania ever had hit recording potential or not
but I've heard so many whispered stories about her rise from obscure
standards and show tune singer/dancer in a nightclub to international
country/pop superstar that are so far from her official bio, like her
possibly being a former party favor to Canadian organized crime figures and
politicians, that it's almost as unsettling as reading the Warren Report and
comparing it to what we can see with our own eyes or think with our on
brains.
And that's just one "artist" in a stable of thousands. Very well paid,
no doubt, but without question, just another slave, who had better tow the
line or wind up like the people who mistakenly believed their own publicity.
Think back to when Jacko and George Michael and Mariah Carey, and
Whitney Huston were seemingly all-powerful hit makers and look at them
today.
I could go into each story here (maybe one at a time in future posts)
but my sources tell me that it was not by accident that Jacko and George
have had serious public humiliations, or that Mariah's movie tanked and she
had a breakdown, or that Whitney was "encouraged" into her addictions by
powerful forces whom each of them bucked.
It's not new. John Fogerty's youth and creative influence were stolen by
Saul Zanetz. Now think of who, say, George Michael clashed with, or who
Jacko called evil, or who Mariah dumped romantically, or Whitney disobeyed
and names like Tommy Mottola, Clive Davis might google up as would
corporations like Sony.
And while Jacko is currently in court and George Michael lives in bitter
self exile, ask yourself who would have the power to destroy or let certain
artists self-destruct when a simple phone call to the authorities, and some
cash in the right envelopes would have made "the problems" go away, as it
has for other stars who committed far worse offences.
Mariah is an interesting case that's so obvious I'm amazed no one has
commented on it before. Movies as mediocrely bad as Glitter don't happen by
accident. That was a set-up, as certain as Paul Castellano's murder was a
hit in a Mafia power struggle.
Of course, no one really cares about this stuff. They just want their
music loud and clear and available, and they want their music video
countdowns and they want to watch awards shows and marvel over the glitz
glamour and red carpet style.
Of course most people don't want to see chicken parts assembly lines or
to know how much rat feces is allowed in peanut butter or how much bug feces
is in that organic salad they ate in that expensive restaurant last night
either.
I admit I have plenty of axes to grind but whether you believe me or
not, it doesn't matter. We're all corporate slaves, like it or not, from
what we eat and wear and watch on TV, right down to the music that gets us
jiggy on Saturday night, or lulls us to sleep, or distracts us from the
nightmare rush traffic of our Monday to Friday morning/afternoon drive
times.
(Looking over shoulder in ersatz paranoia) Just don't tell them I told
you about it, otherwise I might make a Post headline, "Rock And Roll
Nobody Found Floating In East River!" ;-)
No, actually, you wouldn't read about it, it would be strangely quiet,
eerily clean and sudden, like I walked through an invisible door and tumbled
away into another dimension.
So pump up the volume and eat that organic salad.

how long will it be before we have Congressional hearings on how women
cheated with cosmetology, to enhance their careers?
Its amusing that people could get so worked up over steroids in
baseball, yet, pop singers like Shania Twain and Ashlee Simpson use
the Auto-tuner for every single note they broadcast and nobody throws
a rod over it. And people like Pamela Anderson were at one time,
probably more plastic than flesh and blood.
It all seems the same "crime", to me. Where does "enhancement" stop

Seriously, in truth anymore, how beautiful you are is far more
important than how talented you are. eg, Faith Hill and Shania Twain
would not have not got to the top if they were 300 pounds and frumpy.
