Who ya gonna call?
Speaking of sequels, "Ghostbusters III" is in the works. Directed by Harold
Ramis (better known as Dr. Egon Spengler) and written by Dan Aykroyd (also
known as Dr. Raymond Stantz), the movie will see the paranormal
investigators transported to a parallel dimension from New York. Sound awful
enough for you? No? Did I mention that Ben Stiller is in talks to co-star?
No word on whether Bill Murray or Sigourney Weaver will reprise their roles,
but the likelihood of that happening is about as good as this movie being a
hit.

It was an absolutely top flick and she was stellar in it. It's easy,
though, to understand why she would want to do light romantic comedy.
Easy money, good money, and mommy can go home at the end of the day
tired but mentally well balanced, instead of physically, emotionally and
spiritually exhausted. It's kind of hard to whip up the mac cheese with
a smile on your face in that state.
I'm trying to think if there have been any truly great female actresses
who had kids in the first half of their career. Hepburn, Madeline Kahn
(well, I love her), Sigourney Weaver (career had peaked before kids) all
built strong careers without kids. Streep had kids and a great career,
so I guess it can be done. Elizabeth Taylor basically fizzed, but that
could be for reasons other than motherhood (booze, men, vanity, etc).

Weaver talks about 'Imaginary Heroes'
By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun
Sigourney Weaver has squared off against aliens, gorillas and ghosts in her
films.
But it was an inner struggle -- which recalls Weaver's fine work in 1997's
dark suburban drama The Ice Storm -- that led the actress to say yes to her
latest juicy role.
Weaver plays Sandy Travis, a grief-stricken (if pot-smoking and
wisecracking) suburban mother, in Imaginary Heroes, which opens Friday.
"I did think of Ice Storm, I love it that (Imaginary Heroes) is even more
from the kids' point of view," Weaver, 55, said at last year's Toronto
International Film Festival.
"And I think one of the themes is the hypocrisy of our society ...
especially in the suburbs, where people try to appear normal," she says. "In
the city, I don't think we really try that hard. You assume the person who
lives next to you is crazy.
"In our society there's a kind of ideal projected of a woman who has it all
and is organized and endlessly attractive and empathetic, etc. And I don't
know any women who feel like that. So we all end up feeling like, 'Oh, God,
I'm the loser,' or 'I'm the one who can't get it together.' And I guess I'm
fascinated by stories that show us underneath that facade."
Not that Weaver feels that societal pressure in her New York City life as
the mother of a 14-year-old daughter and the wife of theatre director Jim
Simpson, to whom she has been married for 20 years.
"I'm lucky, I'm sort of an artist," she says with a smile. "They don't
really expect me to be too normal, thank goodness."
Imaginary Heroes, written by first-time director Dan Harris, offers up a
tour de force role for Weaver, who plays the matriarch of a disintegrating
upper-middle-class household destroyed by tragedy.
Weaver's character is intensely close with her emotionally wounded son
(Emile Hirsch). But neither shares much of a bond with the husband/father
(Jeff Daniels) who is mostly absent or alternately depressed or angry.
When asked about American cinema's preoccupation with the healing of the
family as subject matter, Weaver didn't think it applied to Imaginary
Heroes.
"It's about what happens to a family when the shell kind of comes off," she
says. "And I think that (Dan's) saying, 'The shell being off is not a bad
thing. You'll heal faster in the sunlight.'
"I'm not sure it's about the family so much as it's about communication.
There's so much miscommunication,
angry communication, failure to communicate at all -- I think that's what
it's about and that's why people are drawn to movies like this."
The actress said her on-screen relationship with Hirsch (The Girl Next Door,
The Dangerous Life Of Altar Boys) was easy to conjure.
"I think we both felt that it was such a beautifully written relationship
and I'd seen Emile's other work, just by chance, and I thought he was
terrific," she says. "It's a very hard and complicated part. But I think,
for me anyway, my scenes with Emile were like an oasis of enjoyment because
we were happy together as characters. There's so much struggle in the rest
of the movie but somehow when we were together, we were usually having fun
... and that was really great. Dan gave us the words and we went with it."
Daniels said the chance to finally work with Weaver was a major selling
point for him.
"She and I kind of came up through New York together, we never worked
together," Daniels said, also in Toronto to promote the film at the festival
last year. "And for me, I've been lucky enough to work with a lot of great
people over the years. So in a way, it's another notch on the belt, kind of,
'I got Weaver.' You can always learn and get better with people who are
really good. She's of that school of really good actors who came out of New
York when I did."
Weaver's depth as an actress is best illustrated by her next two film
choices following Imaginary Heroes.
She did voice work for the Grimm FairyTales animated family comedy Happily
N'Ever After and is playing legendary stylish socialite Babe Paley
in the Truman Capote film Every Word Is True.
While so closely associated with her monster-fighting Ellen Ripley character
from the Alien films, Weaver says she has never resented the association.
"No, because I don't think I could help make movies like Imaginary Heroes if
I hadn't been
Ripley," she says. "Once you've got that Q rating, or something, you can
actually bring a lot of support to these small movies. And, also, I thought
it was a great character. (Alien) was a very unconventional picture and kind
of an unconventional franchise so I feel really lucky that I got to take
such an interesting path."
She adds with a smile: "I didn't see Alien vs. Predator but from what I
gather, we did all lose."

Oscar race preview: Supporting Actor
By LOUIS B. HOBSON - Calgary Sun
The double acting nod Jamie Foxx received for this year's 77th Academy
Awards makes him only the third performer in Oscar history to be nominated
as both best-supporting actor and best actor.
Foxx, 37, who is nominated in the best supporting category for Collateral
and best actor category for Ray joins Barry Fitzgerald, who scored the first
double nomination in 1944 for the same role and Al Pacino in 1992. Seven
actresses have also scored this honour, including Sigourney Weaver (1988),
Jessica Lange (1982), Holly Hunter (1993), Emma Thompson (1993) and Julianne
Moore (2002).
Should he actually win two acting Oscars this year, Foxx would make Oscar
history but -- as with past double nominees -- that's not going to happen.
He'll likely take home the Oscar for best actor which is ironic because his
stint in Collateral as the taxi driver who must outwit the assassin (Tom
Cruise) who has hired him is the better of the two performances.
Alan Alda's nomination as the corrupt senator in The Aviator marks the first
time he has been recognized by the Academy in a career that spans 50 years.
Since its inception in 1936, the best supporting actor Oscar has been a way
of acknowledging the work of seasoned veterans such as Melvyn Douglas, Jason
Robards, Jack Palance, Martin Landau, George Burns and John Gielgud. Alda,
69, won't win this year, but he will receive a good number of votes from
academy members who are his contemporaries.
He would have had a much better chance had he not been up against Morgan
Freeman, 67, who is long overdue for Oscar glory. As the former boxer In
Million Dollar Baby whose career was cut short by a blinding blow, Freeman
defines understated acting.
He is the only actor in this category with past Oscar recognition, having
garnered a best supporting nomination in 1987 for Street Smart and best
actor nominations for Driving Miss Daisy in 1989 and The Shawshank
Redemption in 1994. It's going to be practically impossible for Academy
voters to snub Freeman. That means he's going to edge out Clive Owen, 40,
the only non-American in the category and the most worthy.
In Closer, Owen gives a mesmerizing performance that confirms he can shine
given material equal to his towering talents.
Thomas Haden Church's nomination for the errant groom in Sideways makes for
a great comeback story but not an Oscar. Sideways won't get Haden Church an
Oscar but it will open doors that have long been closed to this personable
country boy.
WILL WIN: Morgan Freeman in Million Dollar Baby
* As a struggling actor Morgan Freeman, left, starred on the children's TV
show The Electric Company. He had stints on the soaps Ryan's Hope and
Another World before wowing audiences and critics alike with his performance
as a pimp in 1987's Street Smart.
* Freeman has already filmed Long Walk to Freedom, Unleashed and An
Unfinished Life and will be seen as Lucius Fox in Batman Begins.
SHOULD WIN: Clive Owen for Closer
Before making an international smash in 1998 as the writer moonlighting as a
casino dealer in Croupier, Clive Owen spent a decade as a staple in British
TV. He has already completed roles in Sin City and Derailed. He continues to
deny rumours that he is being considered for or has considered being the
next James Bond.
The other nominees ...
A true chameleon actor, Jamie Foxx began his career on TV's In Living Color
and within two years had his own show The Jamie Foxx Show. Tom Cruise chose
him to play the cabbie in Collateral.
After success on TV's Wings and Ned and Stacey, Thomas Haden Church had
virtually retired to his ranch until Alexander Payne tracked him down for
Sideways.
This may be Alan Alda's first Oscar nomination but he has a host of Emmys
for writing, directing and starring in M*A*S*H. Currently starring as
Senator Arnold Vinick on TV's The West Wing, Alda does not have another film
project.

Happy days ahead for beautiful Bryce
08:23am 11th August 2004
Turning heads: Bryce Dallas Howard
Her father was known to millions as Richie Cunningham in the TV series Happy
Days, but it was daughter Bryce Dallas Howard's own turn in the spotlight -
at the premiere of her new movie, The Village.
Bryce was an unknown actress until The Sixth Sense director M Night
Shyamalan cast her in his latest spooky film.
He spotted Bryce, who shares the same red hair as her father Ron Howard, in
a theatre production of Shakespeare's As You Like It and immediately offered
the 23-year-old her first staring role.
Bryce stars alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Oscar-winner Adrien Brody and
Sigourney Weaver in the movie about an isolated late 19th-century community
terrorised by the creatures living in the surrounding woods.
Critics have praised Bryce's performance as blind girl Ivy Walker.
Last night at the premiere in London's Leicester Square, Bryce said her
father, who found fame as the all-American teenager Richie Cunningham in
Fifties-styled Happy Days, was proud of her first big role.
She said her father, who starred in Happy Days from 1974 to 1980, had seen
the film and liked her performance - but she had not returned the favour.
She admitted: "I haven't seen my Dad in Happy Days. I wasn't allowed to
watch TV when I was younger. It wasn't intentional, that was just the way it
was.
"But I've got the DVD and am going to watch it when I get home.
"He's very proud of this movie."
The actress, wearing a black Alice Temperley dress and Prada heels, said: "I
have never been to a premiere before. This is a little bit overwhelming but
I do feel very fortunate."
She wanted to "check the sanity" of the director after he offered her the
role without an audition, she said.
Asked about the prospect of working with her father, she said: "We haven't
discussed it. I hope so one day, but it's up to him, I am just the actor."
Bryce's father was a child star born to acting parents and was in his first
movie at the age of 18 months.
Since turning his hand to directing he has worked on A Beautiful Mind and
Apollo 13, in which Bryce was given a small role.
Born Manor Shyamalan, The Village's director, who began making amateur films
at the age of 10, chose to change his name to Night because he thought it
was evocative for film-making.
His previous films include Unbreakable (2000) and Signs (2002) and the
34-year-old has been dubbed the next Steven Spielberg and Hitchcock.
The Village has received mixed reviews but topped the US box office charts
in its opening weekend, taking more than £27.4 million.
Last night, the director who won his reputation as an original film maker
with The Sixth Sense, about a clairvoyant boy who sees the dead, said:
"Bryce is a real find" and said the film was inspired by his own feelings
and about wanting to get away.
Bryce, who was given her middle name Dallas after the place where she was
conceived, will next be seen replacing Nicole Kidman in Manderlay, the
sequel to Lars von Trier's drama Dogville.
Other celebrities to attend included The Office star Martin Freeman, Meera
Syal and her boyfriend, Kumars star Sanjeev Bhaskar.

HA HA HA !!!! ....no worries .... I was only teasing you.
Its funny though how we all have this mental picture - you obviously of Uma
and me of Halle - about how *virtuous* and *perfect* a picture we have in
our minds of them - based loosely on their looks etc etc when in fact they
may well ( and probably are ) hell on earth people in real life that you
would never want to know let alone be married to.
I remember Sigourney Weaver in an article say something along the lines of "
the majority of film stars were the assholes at school that no-one wanted to
know and they got into acting as a means of getting some human
interaction/recognition and a feed to their egos and insecurities" Lets
face it but for some form of a process akin to winning the lottery most of
them would be just nobodies like me and you with the same issues and
screwups we go through every day but without the press of the world exposing
it all to the rest of the world.

Is George Clooney the new king of screwball comedy?
Think Cary Grant and Clark Gable, two dashing male leads who relished such
roles in the popular 1930s and '40s genre. They fought the battle of the sexes
with witty dialogue, made fun of the rich as though they existed to do so, and
love reigned in the end.
It's a genre that's often been relegated to "classic" status, but with
"Intolerable Cruelty" (which opens Oct. 10), the pairing of Clooney and the
writer-director team of Joel and Ethan Coen may signal its comeback.
The 42-year-old star is often compared with Grant and Gable. In the Coen
brothers' "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," his comic impersonation of Gable was
spot-on. In such films as "One Fine Day," "Out of Sight," and "Ocean's 11," his
performances have reminded viewers of Grant's suave, twinkly-eyed charisma and
masculine self-assurance.
"Clooney took a lot of chances in 'O Brother,'" says film critic Richard
Jameson. "He left himself open to mockery or looking foolish, playing a guy who
was self-congratulatingly oafish. It was a wonderful take-off on mid-'30s Clark
Gable. "He bears more of a physical resemblance to Gable," Jameson continues.
"But he has the poise, smoothness and intelligence of Grant. The story's still
being written, though. It's premature to go whole-hog and compare him to one of
those giants." Clooney admits that being likened to such iconic stars is "very
flattering."
"I get it," he says, recognizing why the comparison is made by relating it to
"Intolerable Cruelty."
"I loved 'His Girl Friday,' 'Bringing Up Baby.' I'm a big fan of Preston
Sturges and Howard Hawks," he adds, referring to some of the screwball genre's
finest films and directors.
But as for his resemblance to Grant and Gable? "No," he says. "And look, these
guys aren't here to defend themselves." SOME WERE SAPS
"These guys" were the sexy charmers - Gable more rugged than Grant - who in
screwball's adult confrontations usually got the girl, but not until they'd
both jumped through hoops.
Sometimes, though, the heroes of those comedies were book smart but naive -
Henry Fonda in "The Lady Eve," Gary Cooper in "Ball of Fire," James Stewart in
"You Can't Take It With You" - and are therefore outwitted, up to a point, by
smartmouthed city girls played by the likes of Barbara Stanwyck or Jean Arthur.
"Intolerable Cruelty" plays out the modern battle of the sexes with sharp
exchanges as a handsome, ruthless L.A. divorce lawyer, Miles Massey (Clooney),
and a seductive, gold-digging divorcee, Marylin Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones),
scheme against each other until love conquers all. Along the way, the Coens, in
the spirit of Capra and Sturges, take potshots at the rich and shallow denizens
of Beverly Hills.
LAWYER IN LOVE
The mood is classic screwball - snarky, glib and amoral. Massey distorts
testimony so that his adversaries' clients end up on the street. He addresses a
convention of matrimonial attorneys on the dispensation of marital assets
following murder and suicide. The Massey prenup is so ironclad that Harvard Law
School devotes an entire semester to it.
And yet something's missing from Massey's life. He's recently bought two new
cars, has a running tab at the Mercedes dealership and a guy waxing his private
plane. But nothing satisfies him.
Enter Mrs. Rexroth, whose soon-to-be ex-husband has hired Massey. From the
moment she walks into his office - with her lawyer - Massey is smitten.
He invites Marylin to dinner, an act that could have him disbarred. But he
still nails her on a professional level and she gets zilch in the divorce
settlement.
It's time for her to find a new husband. Quickly. Next time around, she'll hire
Massey as her lawyer. Or perhaps she has something else in mind?
"These characters don't realize the trouble they're in emotionally until they
run into each other," says Clooney. "Miles is kind of an idiot savant. He's
very good at one aspect of his life, but terrible at the rest. He's incredibly
skilled at structuring things that hurt people."
But with Marylin, "he's a hopeless romantic," Clooney adds. In one scene, after
she's retained his professional services, he escorts her away from her
husband-to-be-of-the-moment (Billy Bob Thornton) for a private chat, and, once
again, Miles could be disbarred, as Marylin is quick to point out.
"That scene when I kiss her at the elevator? Miles has that look of the total
sap: From here on out, [he's] done," says Clooney.
"Intolerable Cruelty" is "classic screwball comedy stuff," says Ethan Coen.
"The hard-hearted woman, the soft-hearted man. The calculating woman, the
romantic dopey man..."
"And [yet] the romantic dopey man is a divorce attorney," says Joel Coen, who
clearly enjoys the paradox.
The Coens claim a debt to Blake Edwards' comedies and the movies they watched
as kids, "those leering sex comedies of the '60s, those cheesy comedies with
titles like 'How to Divorce Your Wife,'" says Ethan.
"'A Touch of Mink,' late Cary Grant, late Bob Hope," adds Joel. "We thought
that was the pinnacle of cinematic art." With "Intolerable Cruelty," "we tried
to make an adult movie," says Ethan, laughing. "It's some weird, childlike view
of what sex is all about. Demented."
"Guys in skirts is funny," offers Joel, referring to a scene in which Clooney
is dressed in a kilt in a tacky Las Vegas chapel. It may remind some viewers of
Grant acting in drag in Hawks' "I Was a Male War Bride" (1949).
"It's as if the Coen brothers have taken all the old Hollywood genres and
ticked them off one by one," says David thomson, author of "The New
Biographical Dictionary of Film" (Knopf). "'Miller's Crossing' was an
old-fashioned gangster picture. 'The Hudsucker Proxy' was a Capraesque
screwball film."
Thomson notes that "the great screwball comedies made in this country in the
1930s and '40s is one of the film traditions in which we should have the most
pride. The people in them talked to each other in an interesting, emotional
way."
He offers one reason why that tradition began to wane.
"What happened after the '30s was this huge wave of Actors Studio acting, which
places hesitation, pause and inarticulateness more central to the American
character.
"The whole acting style of Brando and Steve McQueen is very male, 'You're
making me talk and I'm not good at words.'"
COMEDY WITH TEETH
"Intolerable Cruelty," on the other hand, represents a return to razor-sharp
badinage between two highly articulate antagonists, with a few touches of
physical comedy thrown in.
"It was scary to play the role," Clooney says of Massey. "If you underplay it,
the movie dies. In 'O Brother,' I was out there on a limb, too."
It's a limb the Coen brothers won't let Clooney slip off. They particularly
enjoy playing off his good looks.
In "Intolerable Cruelty," we first meet Massey through his teeth: He is talking
on a cell phone in a salon as strange lights bounce off his pearly whites. How
did the Coens come up with that one?
"I don't really remember," says Joel. "I guess we were reading about
teeth-whitening services - there was a lot of that in L.A. "George is a
fabulously good-looking guy, and there's something that appeals to the three of
us about making him ridiculously vain."
In "O Brother," set in the rural South in the '30s, Clooney plays an escaped
convict who, though he often sleeps by the side of the road, makes sure he dons
a hair net each night.
And for the next Coen-Coen-Clooney collaboration?
"In 'O Brother,' it was hair," says clooney. "In 'Intolerable Cruelty,' it's
teeth. They keep looking. I'm running out of body parts. What are they going to
do next? Wax my back?"
Designing Dames
'Poor Hollywood," says Catherine Zeta-Jones of the plot of her new film,
"Intolerable Cruelty." "These things - lawyers, divorces, settlements,
conniving women - happen all over the world." She sighs. "But I do know people
who divorce a lot and have really nice houses."
Indeed. Hollywood has produced some great conniving dames. Aboard a cruise ship
on "The Lady Eve" (1941), card sharp Barbara Stanwyck meets a charmingly
bumbling scientist/ale-brewing heir (Henry Fonda). Like George Clooney in
"Intolerable Cruelty," he's putty in a woman's hands.
As were Gary Cooper and James Stewart in the hands of Jean Arthur. In "Mr.
Deeds Goes to Town" (1936), Arthur is a reporter who cares only about the scoop
- and the scoop is an idealistic, naive young heir played by Cooper. In "You
Can't Take It With You" (1938), she's the beloved daughter of an extremely
eccentric Manhattan family. Her boss (Stewart) comes from the most brittle part
of the upper crust. And guess what? In each instance, she falls in love.
THEY'RE STILL AT IT
While designing dames gave their best in screwball comedies, more recent films
have given them a chance to cash in. In "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" (1988),
Michael Caine and Steve Martin play scam artists preying on wealthy ladies on
the French Riviera; Glenne Headly plays a potential victim who has the last
laugh. In "Heartbreakers" (2001), Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt
play mother-daughter grifters: Mom marries rich guys, daughter seduces them.
Big fat settlement. But then love enters the picture.
Zeta-Jones won an Oscar playing a vampy murderess in "Chicago" (2002). Now she
has brought back the classic screwball schemer. Watch out.
- Celebrity Gossip
- Most moviegoers will probably remember this striking, patrician leading lady for her characterization of Ripley, the besieged protagonist of the Alien movies, but she's shown herself to be capable of much more than blasting slimy monsters into atoms. Born in New York to an affluent family (her father is broadcasting executive Sylvester "Pat" Weaver; her uncle was comedian Doodles Weaver), Sigourney, who adopted her name from a character in F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," attended Yale Drama School and worked on stage before landing a lead in Madman (1976) and a bit in Annie Hall (1977, as Woody's date at the end of the film). Her role as the tough astronaut in Ridley Scott's Alien (1979) made Weaver a recognizable screen player. Having graduated to starring parts, Weaver appeared as a reporter in both Eyewitness (1981, opposite William Hurt) and The Year of Living Dangerously (1983, opposite Mel Gibson). Those films bolstered her standing as a compelling lead, but the immense success of Ghostbusters (1984), in which she played a comically possessed New Yorker romanced by Bill Murray, did more for her career.
She played an intelligent hooker in Half Moon Street (1986), and reprised her Ripley characterization-even tougher and more commanding than before-in Aliens (1986, and earned her first Oscar nomination) before pulling off the nifty trick of snagging two Oscar nominations-Best Supporting Actress for her comic turn as the bitchy businesswoman in Working Girl and Best Actress for her portrayal of the devoted anthropologist in Gorillas in the Mist-in 1988. She appeared in the lightweight Ghostbusters II (1989), and returned to Ripley (with a shaved head!) in Aliens3 (1992). She then costarred with Kevin Kline in Dave (1993) as an aloof First Lady who falls in love with the President's "double" and took on the demanding role of a former torture victim who confronts her tormentor in Death and the Maiden (1994).
- "I'm having a wonderful time producing. There are good producers and bad producers. I've learned the hard way what not to do. The ultimate aim is to produce things I'm not actually in. I'm not looking for vehicles for myself. It's not a vanity company."
- "Well, I've always admired Margaret Rutherford. Like her I'd like to play Miss Marple W_hen I'm eighty."
- "I'd rather have a small part in a movie I love than a bigger part in one I don't care about."
- Her salary for Alien: Resurrection (1997) was more than the entire cost of the original "Alien" movie.
