NEW YORK - Sofia Coppola has a new project in the works - a baby, due
this winter, People magazine reported Wednesday on its Web site.
The father is Coppola's boyfriend, Thomas Mars, a singer for the French
band Phoenix, the magazine said. The 35-year-old filmmaker won a best
screenplay Oscar for 2003's "Lost in Translation," which she also
directed.
A call by The Associated Press to Coppola's representative, Robert
Garlock, was not immediately returned.
Coppola is the daughter of Oscar-winning director Francis Ford
Coppola. She played Mary Corleone in his 1990 movie, "The Godfather:
Part III."
Her upcoming film, "Marie Antoinette," stars Kirsten Dunst as the
18th-century French queen. Coppola wrote and directed the movie, which
drew wildly mixed reactions at its first press screening at the Cannes
Film Festival.
Coppola was married to director Spike Jonze for four years; she filed
for divorce in 2003.

Aniston 'sickened' by baby news
Thursday Jun 1 10:00 AEST
Jennifer Aniston felt "nauseous" when she got a phone call telling her
Brangelina's baby had been born.
But Aniston later told friends she was relieved that the "sick triangle" was
finally over and she could move on with her life.
Her ex-Brad Pitt was in the operating room as new love Angelina Jolie gave
birth to baby daughter Shiloh Nouvel Pitt-Jolie.

Aniston, 37, got the news of Pitt's baby on May 27 from an associate from
Plan B, the production company she once owned with Pitt.
"The nauseous feeling I expected to have when I heard the news is smaller
than I thought," Star magazine quotes Aniston as telling a friend.
"I'm sick to death of having paparazzi ask me how I feel.
"How do they think I feel? I've wanted this to be over for so long. Now,
hopefully, my place in this sick triangle will be replaced with the baby.
"I'm finally going to be able to make my own decisions and not have to
factor in all this bulls**t."
Aniston also told pals that she fears Pitt will end up raising the baby on
his own, according to the magazine.
"I really do wish Brad the best of luck because he'll need it when he's
raising that child alone and she's off somewhere adopting another Third
World baby.
"I do wish Brad and Angelina luck. Passion is fleeting and their whole
relationship is based on passion, however misguided it seems to me."
Pitt and Jolie are holed up in the impoverished African country of Namibia
after the birth of Shiloh.
It is expected they will return to Pitt's luxurious Malibu home in June to
raise Shiloh.

I knew Wallis Simpson, senator, and Sofia Coppola is no Wallis Simpson.
Neither is she a Jessica Simpson. Sofia's overriding, compelling personal
charisma escapes me. And the camera. "Hello, I'm Sofia, my father is a
famous successful director. Otherwise I'd be lucky to get a job doing
janitorial chores on the set, much less acting in and directing
multi-million dollar bombs." Somehow I think Angelina's lock on Brad is
safe from the clutches of Sofia Coppola. For example, it's easy to see some
hunk throwing over his career, position, and fortune for this:

Murray thanks Coppola for career boost
18/06/2005 - 10:45:44
Screen veteran Bill Murray credits director Sofia Coppola with re-inventing
his career when she cast him in her 2003 film Lost In Translation.
Murray was awarded a Golden Globe award for his part in the film and proved
he is capable of carrying off more serious roles as well as the comedy parts
he found fame playing.
He said: "I really love Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola's an excellent
film-maker. She wrote a great story and made a lovely film.
"It was actually the beginning of a new phase for me: I knew I could do
these kind of movies but I'd never been invited before."

Sex symbol Scarlett loved her Lost look
13/06/2005 - 12:35:57
Scarlett Johansson has Sofia Coppola'>Sofia Coppola and movie photographer Lance Accord to
thank for her sex symbol tag, because she fears she'd never have been
noticed had it not been for a scene in which she wears sheer underwear in
Lost in Translation.
The 20-year-old actress admits she was reluctant to wear the see-through
panties at first, until director Coppola modelled them for her, and then she
was more than pleased when she saw how the film's director of photogr aphy
made her look sexy onscreen.
She tells men's magazine Playboy: "When I first saw it (the scene) I
silently thanked our director of photography, Lance Accord. I'd told him
that if I looked like I had any lumps or bumps he'd never work in this town
a gain. It doesn't look like my ass; it looks like a really lovely ass.
"I told Sofia Coppola'>Sofia Coppola that I didn't want to wear sheer underwear. She said,
'OK. but I think it would look really great.'
"She said, 'Look, I'll put on the sheer underwear and lie on the bed. If you
think it looks strange, we'll make it some other kind of underwear.' She put
them on and looked fantastic, of course."
Johansson loves the fact that she's now someone others stare at because
she's a self-confessed starer: "I would never really discourage someone from
looking at me. You're talking to someone who has a huge staring proble m
herself... I like to watch people."

Brunettes Beat Blondes
Brunettes have triumphed over blondes in a list of the world's 100 most
beautiful women.
The top five in the Harpers & Queen magazine list, compiled by 1,000 experts
from the worlds of fashion, arts and the media, are brunettes.
Hollywood beauty Angelina Jolie topped the poll, followed by supermodel
Christy Turlington, Queen Rania of Jordan, film director Sofia Coppola and
domestic goddess Nigella Lawson.
Blondes such as supermodel Kate Moss, Kill Bill star Uma Thurman and Lost in
Translation's Scarlett Johansson are in the top 100, but have been relegated
out of the top five.
Harpers & Queen editor Lucy Yeomans said: "We were really surprised when the
brunettes came out on top.
"But from our panel results, we witnessed a definite shift away from the
traditionally deified blonde stereotype.
"Instead, people with a more unusual and interesting beauty ranked higher.
"We encouraged people to vote on the all-round package, rather than on
physical beauty alone, so it was great to see less obvious beauties such as
film director Sofia Coppola making the top five."

Coppola "Furious with Deceptive Delon"
Oscar-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola is "furious" with legendary actor
Alain Delon - after the Frenchman reportedly used her offer of a role in
upcoming movie Marie-Antoinette for his own publicity. Lost In Translation
director Coppola is currently shooting her film in France and thought she'd
found the perfect actor to play monarch Louis XV in screen star Delon.
However, Coppola eventually settled on US actor Rip Torn after Delon turned
her offer down - leaving Coppola upset. A source tells website Pagesix.Com,
"Delon led her to believe she could talk him into accepting the role. He
invited her to see him in a play, and she went backstage afterward where
there were two photographers waiting to take pictures of her and Delon. Then
they went out to dinner. The next morning, the photos of her and Delon
appeared in the papers having been obviously pre-planned, with captions
saying that Delon had refused Coppola's offer. He has gone on to say that he
can't be in a movie where he has to wear a wig, but that he would do any
contemporary movie she offered him. Obviously, Delon had staged the evening
as publicity for himself. Sofia is furious." A spokesperson for Coppola
says, "Sofia is too busy right now to be upset, and she is quite happy with
Rip Torn in that role."

Rose set to blossom
Two more Australian actors are scoring top film roles overseas.
29mar05
COULD life get any better for Aussie stunner Rose Byrne?
The 25-year-old actor has decided to follow the road most travelled by
talented beautiful Aussie women -- straight to Britain.
And the news from the beauty's perfect life is that Byrne has set up home in
Hackney, London.
Byrne is the proud owner of a three-bedroom Victorian house with her
32-year-old sister Lucy.
"I have made the decision to base myself in Britain and I have bought a
three-bedroomed Victorian house with a little garden, not far from Hackney's
main street," she said.
"It's really pretty, I can't wait to move in."
Byrne is on small screens across Britain with the BBC dramatisation of
Casanova.
Last year, she played Brad Pitt's love interest in the historical epic Troy.
The Sydney girl began taking drama classes at the age of eight and got her
first professional job at 13.
She has starred opposite Heath Ledger in the Australian film Two Hands and
Natalie Portman in Star Wars: Episode II.
She is due to begin work on Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola's
movie Marie Antoinette.
But Byrne said she remained down to earth, with her feet firmly on the
ground.
"You have to remember it is about your work, not about how you look," she
said. "My mother always said to me that it didn't matter what the outside
looked like, it was what was going on inside your head that counted."
Shock phone call
THE film industry is also working wonders for another Aussie actor, Radha
Mitchell, who has been working with movie legend Woody Allen.
The Melbourne star thought it was a hoax when she received a call from the
director asking her to star in Melinda and Melinda -- until she received the
.
The 32-year-old beauty was on her way home from Los Angeles airport when her
mobile phone rang and she was shocked to hear somebody claiming to be Allen
offering her a part.
"My cell phone started ringing in the taxi on the way home," Mitchell told
British magazine Hotdog.
"I thought it was my mum calling to check that I had landed safely, but it
was Woody Allen ringing to see if I wanted to be in his movie!
"I wasn't sure if it was actually him or not, because it didn't sound like
him and I wasn't expecting him to call.
"Then I got the and realised it was true."
Mitchell has come a long way since leaving Australia.
She's worked with Denzel Washington in Man on Fire and Johnny Depp in
Finding Neverland.
She is expected back in Australia soon to start filming on a project known
as Guests, which is about three people stuck in a house together.
Mitchell plays two versions of the same character in Melinda and Melinda,
which hits the big screen on May 26.

Sofia, Clint Lead Director Nominations
STEPHEN M. SILVERMAN
The Directors Guild of America announced its five nominees for the union's
56th annual award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement on Tuesday, yet
another sign that the Oscar nominations are just around the corner. (Those
babies get named Jan. 27.)
And the DGA nominees are: Sofia Coppola, for "Lost in Translation"; Clint
Eastwood, for "Mystic River" (he previously won for 1992's "Unforgiven");
Peter Jackson, for "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (his
third consecutive nomination for the trilogy); Gary Ross, for "Seabiscuit";
and Peter Weir, for "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World."
The most notable snub? Director Anthony Minghella, whose Civil War romance
"Cold Mountain" led the Golden Globe nominations with eight (including a
best director nod), but is nowhere to be found on the DGA's list.
The winner will be announced at a gala dinner Feb. 7 at the Century Plaza
Hotel in Los Angeles. (The Oscars, meanwhile, will be handed out Feb. 29.)
Until recently, the DGA winner, with very few exceptions, went on to take
the Oscar home, though that pattern has been broken recently.
As the DGA acknowledges on its Web site, the DGA winner matched the Oscar
winner all but six times since 1949. The first exception came in 1968, when
Anthony Harvey took home Guild honors for "The Lion in Winter," while Carol
Reed won the Oscar for "Oliver!"
In 1972, Sofia Coppola's father, Francis Ford Coppola, won the DGA for "The
Godfather," while Bob Fosse won the Oscar for "Cabaret." In 1985, Steven
Spielberg won the DGA for "The Color Purple," while the Oscar went to Sydney
Pollack for "Out of Africa." Ten years later, Ron Howard won the DGA for
"Apollo 13," while Mel Gibson won the Oscar for "Braveheart." In 2000, Ang
Lee won the DGA for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," while Steven
Soderbergh won the Oscar for "Traffic."
And lest anyone forget, last year Rob Marshall won the DGA for "Chicago,"
while the Oscar went to Roman Polanski for "The Pianist."
Still, the Directors Guild nominations usually match the Academy's
contenders for Best Director.

By Bob Tourtellotte
LOS ANGELES, (Reuters) - The race for Oscars gold took an unexpected turn on
Tuesday when a major list of nominees for best film director snubbed Anthony
Minghella and his widely-hailed Civil War epic "Cold Mountain" but gave a nod
to Gary Ross's horse racing saga, "Seabiscuit."
The widely-respected Directors Guild of America, an association representing
movie directors, put Peter Jackson and his smash box office hit "Lord of the
Rings: The Return of the King," on the list of best film director nominees
along with Peter Weir for his seafaring epic, "Master and Commander: The Far
Side of the World."
Rounding out the list of five nominees were Clint Eastwood with crime thriller
"Mystic River," and Sofia Coppola for her Tokyo romance, "Lost in Translation."
"Return of the King" now positions itself as an award front-runner, Oscar
watchers said, as industry voters could reward Jackson for the combined trilogy
that includes 2001's "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and
last year's "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The nomination also marks
Jackson's third consecutive DGA nod, the first time that has ever happened.
Still it was Minghella's absence and the inclusion of "Seabiscuit" that had
Hollywood buzzing.
"It's a bit of cliche, but it really does mean the most when (a nomination)
comes from your peers," Ross told Reuters.
The "Seabiscuit" nod follows Monday's nomination for best film producing team
for Ross and co-producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall from the
Producers Guild of America.
The nomination was especially rewarding for "Seabiscuit," about the
come-from-behind, Depression-era champion because it has been a dark-horse this
Oscar race owing to its summer debut outside the fall season that is filled
with Academy Award hopefuls.
The loss of Minghella and his critically acclaimed "Cold Mountain" from the DGA
race proved to be a "shocker" for Tom O'Neil, host of award Website
goldderby.com and author of "Movie Awards."
"We had presumed up to now that the race for best picture at both the Golden
Globes and Oscars was between 'Cold Mountain' and 'Lord of the Rings,"' said
O'Neil. "The news today means a major step back for 'Cold Mountain."'
"Cold Mountain" received a leading eight nominations for Golden Globe awards ,
which are given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are
perceived as instrumental in swaying Oscar voting. Globe winners will be named
on Jan. 25.
Moreover, "Cold Mountain" is backed by Miramax Films and its chief Harvey
Weinstein, who have waged widely successful campaigns in Oscar races since the
1990s, backing winners like Minghella's "The English Patient" and last year's
"Chicago."
Some Oscar watchers attributed Minghella's absence to a timing issue as ballots
for the DGA awards were mailed out on December 8, but "Cold Mountain" did not
debut until Christmas day, Dec. 25, meaning ballots could have been returned
early.
Only six times since 1949 has the winner of the DGA's honor not won the best
director Oscar, and 10 of the past 14 PGA winners have claimed the best film
Oscar, which is the U.S. film industry's top award given out by the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Oscars will be awarded on Feb. 29.
Fading in the Oscar pack appear to be Tom Cruise movie "The Last Samurai,"
director Tim Burton's "Big Fish," and low-budget film "In America," from Irish
director Jim Sheridan.
Coppola's film appears to be the independent movie to beat this year. The
director is the daughter of acclaimed filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, himself a
DGA winner for 1972's "The Godfather" which earned the best picture Oscar that
year but failed to win the best director Oscar.

NY POST...MEGAN LEHMANN
February 16, 2004 -- A radiant Uma Thurman has a brand-new love - hot hotelier
André Balazs. Sofia Coppola's career is on fire. And Mary-Louise Parker just
triumphed at the Golden Globes.
It's hard to believe they've all just endured bitter breakups, having been
variously dumped, cheated on and frozen out.
This triumphant trio - who've become the new role models for jilted wives and
girlfriends everywhere - has a lot to teach the rest of us, say relationship
experts.
"The best revenge is to be immediately successful in all areas of your life,
which may or may not include an Oscar nomination for us civilians," says Lynn
Harris, a 34-year-old Brooklynite and author of "Breakup Girl to the Rescue."
While most of us don't have access to stylists or hot designers clamoring to
dress us, regular women, too, tend to go on a post-breakup offensive - be it
getting a fabulous new haircut, committing to an intense new workout, or
launching a new project.
"I think pretty much every time [after a split] there is this 'running with the
wolves' period, which can co-exist with the natural sadness."
"All of a sudden - presto! - something awesome happens in their career," says
Harris.
Recent history is full of resilient women who've outshone their exes.
Actress Claire Bloom wrote the best-seller "Leaving a Doll's House," a bitter
memoir of her life with author Philip Roth after their split, while J.K.
Rowling produced the phenomenally successful "Harry Potter" books after
separating from her Portuguese journalist husband.
And then there's Nicole Kidman, who's emerged from the shadow of her former
husband, Tom Cruise, to become one of the most sought-after actresses in
Hollywood.
While the Teflon trio of Parker, Coppola and Thurman have been dominating the
spotlight, strutting the red carpet in stunning designer gowns, their exes have
receded meekly into the background.
Coppola's formerly ubiquitous ex, director Spike Jonze, has virtually vanished,
while Ethan Hawke - who cheated on Thurman with a 22-year-old model - has been
spotted moping around Manhattan and sulking on the set of his new movie, "Billy
Dead."
Women often tend to handle separations more productively than men, says Britton
Payne, author of "Dumped: When You Are Unexpectedly Single."
"Because men feel that society has put them in a more emotionally controlled
place, they use certain ways of dealing - being angry with [their former
partner], getting smashed, projecting their anger on to all women," he says.
"Women are more inclined to talk about it with their friends, to work it out
emotionally."
There's no one single right way to rebound from a breakup, say experts - it's
just a matter of finding a path that's right for you.
"We as civilians can take our pick," says Harris. "You can say, 'I'll do it the
Uma way!' or 'the Sofia way.'
"But what I think they've all done is they've all been extremely dignified."
Parker, for example, turned to humor - not the bitter, sarcastic brand, but
simple, genuine charm, cracking a joke about her voluptuous post-pregnancy
figure in front of 26 million viewers at last month's Golden Globes.
"There's humor that is really only thinly veiled hurt feelings, which makes
people laugh uncomfortably," says Harris, "and there's humor that shows you've
still got it."
Coppola immersed herself into promoting her movie, "Lost in Translation,"
winning an historic Oscar nomination in the process along with two Golden
Globes.
"It's good to throw yourself into your work if it reminds you that you still
have all these strengths and skills without what's-his-name," says Harris.
And Thurman, Harris says, "never really let us see her sweat.
"It's not throwing an 'I hate John' party, it's not seeking revenge. It's
holding your head high when you feel low.
"Classy feels as classy does - especially if your ex has done something
unclassy such as cheating on you."
Harris advises taking further tips from the stars: Don't badmouth your ex in
public, try not to go out in public "looking like crap," and put on a game
face.
"It's not like you have anything to prove to him. It's just that he was a part
of your life - but there's a lot left."
MARY-LOUISE PARKER
OUCH: Last November, longtime beau Billy Crudup brutally dumped the 39-year-old
Southern-bred actress - when she was 8 1/2 months pregnant! - for a younger
woman, actress Claire Danes.
THE SHOW MUST GO ON: Parker put on a game face to promote the acclaimed "Angels
in America."
TAKE THAT! While accepting a Golden Globe last month, Parker got the evening's
biggest laugh when she told the crowd she'd win a $1,000 bet from her "West
Wing" co-star Janel Moloney by thanking her newborn son, William, for "making
my boobs look so good in this dress."
LOOKING GOOD: Eighteen days after giving birth, her impressive cleavage - and
the rest of her - indeed looked like a million bucks in a barely there black
halter dress.
WHERE IS HE NOW? Crudup, currently on screens in "Big Fish," has been spotted
out on dates with Danes. Boo. Hiss.
UMA THURMAN
OUCH: Scruffy actor Ethan Hawke publicly humiliated his gorgeous wife, the
mother of their two children, by fooling around with a 22-year-old Canadian
model.
THE SHOW MUST GO ON: Thurman assumed a Zen-like demeanor while doing the press
rounds promoting back-to-back action movies "Kill Bill Vol. 1" and "Paycheck."
TAKE THAT! The 33-year-old actress has been spotted in hot spots on both coasts
publicly canoodling with hunky hotelier André Balazs.
LOOKING GOOD: Thurman looks super-fit, thanks to the rigorous martial arts
training she did for "Kill Bill," and has started wearing mini-dresses to show
off her gams.
WHERE IS HE NOW? Hawke has been looking increasingly miserable after a number
of failed attempts at reconciliation - and his work is reportedly suffering
SOFIA COPPOLA
OUCH: In December, Coppola and fellow director Spike Jonze announced they were
splitting after four years of marriage, reportedly because Jonze was obsessed
with his career.
THE SHOW MUST GO ON: Francis Ford Coppola's daughter threw herself into her
work, promoting her sophomore movie, "Lost in Translation."
TAKE THAT! Last month, Coppola became the first American woman director ever to
receive an Oscar nomination.
LOOKING GOOD: Marc Jacobs' muse has made not a single fashion misstep while
treading red carpets from L.A. to Venice.
WHERE IS HE NOW? The once-buzzed-about "Adaptation" director has been pushed
into the background while the spotlight is focused squarely on Coppola.
