Birth twins
Mark Juddery
January 06, 2006
CHARLES Darwin and Abraham Lincoln, two of the great figures of the 19th
century, were born on different sides of the Atlantic, into completely
different environments (Darwin into a stately manor, Lincoln in a log
cabin), but on the same day: February 12, 1809. A nice coincidence, you
might think, but actually they were quite similar.
Both were raised as Christians, though Darwin died an atheist and Lincoln
was reportedly an outspoken non-believer. Both had unimpressive school
records, but taught themselves to reach the peak of their professions. Both
were able to embrace change; both detested slavery. Both had important
turning points in their 20s: Lincoln entered politics, and Darwin visited
the Galapagos Islands, which inspired his theory of evolution. His greatest
work, On the Origin of Species, was published in 1859 - one year before
Lincoln was elected US president.
With these events, both would challenge the status quo - changing the world,
and winning enemies among the conservatives of the time. (Darwin would be
denounced; Lincoln would be assassinated.)
According to astrologers and numerologists, it is more than just coincidence
that these two giants were born on the same day. Statistics suggest that
"birth twins", as they are called, have more than a few things in common.
"There are certain similarities of temperament, understanding and approach
to life," says Sydney astrologer Mary-Anne Reid. "I have actually helped
people with career guidance based on their charts ... and yes, it does
work."
Over some 30 years, French psychologists Michel and Francoise Gauquelin
studied the birth charts of over 60,000 people and found that those with
similar birth charts appear to have similar traits, and are drawn to similar
professions. Using different samples, independent researchers - including
some self-proclaimed sceptics - have reflected these results. Obviously,
golf is a good career for those born on May 12, 1970. In 2003, The Scotsman
newspaper noted that three of the world's top-ranked golfers - Mike Weir,
Andrew Coltart and recent Sun City champion Jim Furyk - were all born on
that date.
The Gauquelins' research, however, found that successful sportspeople were
most likely to be born when the planet Mars was on the horizon. Presumably,
Mars was present when those three golfers were born. The research showed
birth twins are more likely to share a vocation. Numerous birth twins have
won fame in the same or similar fields: bestselling novelists Anne Rice and
Jackie Collins, blues musicians Charlie Byrd and B.B. King.
In the world of showbiz, several birth twins have become successful actors:
Hollywood stars Judy Holliday and Jane Russell, comedy stars Andy Griffith
and Marilyn Monroe, classy British actors Albert Finney and Glenda Jackson,
fashionable (but critically acclaimed) sirens Diana Rigg and Natalie Wood,
and intense leading men Edward Norton and Christian Slater.
It might not just be in the stars. Blame numerology, biorhythms (personal
life cycles, determined by birthdates) or coincidence. Barry Williams,
executive officer of the Australian Skeptics, says that Gauquelin's research
has been exposed for its imprecise use of birth records.
So why did it still seem to work? "As a species, we're very interested in
seeing patterns in things," Wiliams says. "It's how we make the world make
sense. In fact, with all the things that happen in daily life, it would be
utterly astonishing if there were no coincidences."
Williams notes that other statisticians, in Europe and the US, have tried to
replicate Gauquelins' findings, with no success. "We can kid ourselves, even
[if we're] mathematicians or scientists," he says. "A scientist will be much
more interested when he sees the results he expected to see." (Michel
Gauquelin, even before his renowned surveys, had a lifelong interest in
astrology.)
Some famous birth twins are not so easy to match. The Dalai Lama has Candy
Barr, the notorious stripper and exotic dancer, as a birth twin. Apart from
fame and birthdates, what links comedian Lenny Bruce with Margaret Thatcher?
Ferdinand Marcos with author Jessica Mitford? Soul singer Otis Redding with
Australian tycoon John Singleton? However contrary those pairs might seem,
Reid believes they all have similarities, that are reflected in their birth
charts. Bruce and Thatcher, for example, were both boldly controversial.
"There's a lot of other stuff that comes into play," says Reid. "It's
fascinating to see how it works."
Birth twins Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross played a married couple for
eight years in the popular 1980s sitcom Family Ties. Oliver Stone directed
his birth twin Tommy Lee Jones in two of their best-known movies.
Two of the most compatible birth twins, however, are environmental artists
Christo Javacheff and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon. They were born in
different nations (he in Bulgaria, she in Morocco) on June 13, 1935, met in
Paris in 1958, have collaborated on many artworks over the past 40 years,
and have been happily married for even longer.
"Naturally, you feel an affinity," says Reid. The only birth twin she ever
met was a friend's husband, born in Singapore the same day that she was born
in Australia. "I felt like I knew him. There was no physical or emotional
attraction, but it was like meeting a brother." She would not discover for
another six months that they shared a birthdate.
"I'm kind of agnostic about that," says David Sutton. Between 1984 and 1987,
he was a member of a legendary Canberra Grammar School debating team - ACT
champions in three of those years, semi-finalists in their "off" year. All
three members were born within 24 hours of each other. "My experience of
people born on the same day as me - and admittedly, that's a very small
sample -- [is that they] are bright, articulate and creative," says Sutton.
"They had a lot of other factors in common. All had similar family
backgrounds and attended private schools. Still, I'm not prepared to say
it's just a coincidence. Perhaps all of us being born on the same day helped
us to click as a [debating] team. Astrology was always good to play with as
an idea, but I don't live my life by it."
Singer-songwriter Kate Ceberano, who has recently added acting to her
repertoire, also sees a possible connection in birth twins. She was born on
the same day as two other entertainment luminaries: the late
singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, and French actor Sophie Marceau.
"I do think there are some correlations amongst people born on the same
days," says Ceberano. "Jeff Buckley was, by all accounts, romantic, dark and
light all at the same time, and deeply moved by music. I'd like to think
that I also am like that. I'd like to think that I also shared some
aesthetic quality with the beautiful Sophie Marceau but I think that that
might be a bit of a stretch for me."
Sometimes being born on the same day can be a curse. Jimmy Hoffa and James
Pike were born on February 14, 1913, both in the US. Hoffa was a powerful
unionist, alleged to have ties with organised crime. Pike was the Episcopal
bishop of California, alleged to have extra-marital affairs. Both were known
as champions of the underprivileged. Hoffa bargained for low-paid workers
and campaigned for prison reform. Pike supported the civil rights movement.
Hoffa was finally convicted of fraud and jury tampering in 1967, serving
four years in prison. Pike was tried for heresy for his radical ideas, which
resulted in the formal censure of his views as "offensive" and
"irresponsible".
But here's the spooky bit: They both disappeared mysteriously. Pike vanished
while on an expedition to the Judean desert to research Christian origins.
(His body was found a few days later.) Hoffa vanished en route to a meeting
with one of his political foes. He was never seen again. Neither Pike's
death nor Hoffa's disappearance have ever been solved.
Princess Diana and Carl Lewis would seem to have less in common, though both
were among the biggest celebrities of the 1980s. Both won overnight fame
early in the decade, and were accused of being "distant". While greatly
admired, both had stormy relationships with the media. Both were late
bloomers. As a child, years before becoming the world's most photographed
person, Diana was notoriously shy. Lewis was a "runt". (Ironically, Diana
showed more sporting prowess than Lewis at school, excelling in several
sports.) They both became renowned for their charity work. Lewis wrote a
tribute to Diana after her death in 1997: "She will be missed by the many
that she touched. And our birthday will never be as bright."
But one the most fitting pairs of birth twins is actor Sylvester Stallone
and President George W. Bush. Their intelligence has often been questioned,
as has their ability to form articulate sentences. However, they have both
been immensely popular. The secret: everyone in America loves a war ...
provided America wins. They each have a past that they would rather forget.
In the early 1970s, Bush had a drinking problem and was arrested three
times. Around the same time, Stallone (as a struggling actor) was debasing
himself in a skin flick. Bush also has a history of failed business
ventures. Stallone had his disasters in Planet Hollywood, his ill-fated
co-venture with two of Bush's friends, Bruce Willis and Arnold
Schwarzenegger.)
If Stallone is anything like his most famous characters, he has even more in
common with the President. As with Rocky, Bush was an underdog, who
triumphed (in the 2000 presidential election) without actually outscoring
his opponent. And, as with Rambo, he has been keen to settle military
scores.
Recently, Stallone and Bush have each faced another problem: neither is as
popular as he used to be. Stallone's mother Jacqueline, an astrologer by
trade, would probably say that it's in the stars.

Sophie does a Janet
From correspondents in Cannes
May 17, 2005
From: Reuters
Fashion victim ... Marceau adjusts after her slip-up
FORMER Bond girl Sophie Marceau has had a serious wardrobe malfunction at
the Cannes film festival.
Arriving at the Palais des Festivals for the premiere of her new film, Atom
Egoyan's Where the Truth Lies, a strap of her white halter top slipped down
one shoulder, exposing one of her breasts.
With camera shutters clicking away, Marceau laughed it off gracefully with a
Gallic shrug.
Janet Jackson's infamous Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction last year sparked a
government investigation, with US TV network CBS being fined $US550,000
($726,000) for the on-air "indecency".
It's unlikely the French response will go quite so far.
Meanwhile, Natalie Portman stunned fans by showing up at the Star Wars:
Episode III - Revenge of the Sith premiere with her head shaved for a role
in the sci-fi thriller V for Vendetta.
It was a far cry from the fussy knotted hairdos of her Star Wars character,
Padme Amidala.
Speakers blasted the sound of Darth Vader's heavy breathing as stars climbed
the steps into the premiere.
Sharon Stone hammed it up for the cameras by putting her arm around one of
the white-armoured storm troopers who lined the red carpet.

> It's almost time again. You can tell we're already into spring as People
> magazine unveils its 16th annual listing of the "50 Most Beautiful
> People." They have also split the roster to include ten of the "Most
> Beautiful Men" and ten "Most Beautiful Women."
The list will be predictable. It's always about whose career is hot at the
time, not about who is truly, breathtakingly beautiful. As such, Teri
Hatcher and Eva Longoria will make the list, simply because they have become
the two most visible female stars of Desperate Housewives; James Denton and
Jesse Metcalf will probably make the male side of the same list for the same
show. Add Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly, although Ian Somerhalder is,
asthetitcally speaking, better looking than Matthew Fox (Lilly, on the other
hand, could melt a cheese sandwich from across the room; she deserves her
spot on the list).
Females:
Bryce Dallas Howard ( I think she's stunning; you have to see her glossy
photos to really appreciate her off-beat beauty, as she was sort of plain in
The Village)
Kate Beckinsale
Halle Berry (a no brainer)
Elisha Cuthbert (finally begun to grow on me)
Jessica Biel (same as Cuthbert)
Portia DeRossi (I think she's hotter now than 7 years ago when she was on
Ally McBeal)
Denise Richards
Sophie Marceau
Vivian Leigh (eternally beautiful)
Michael Michele
Keira Knightly
Natalie Portman
Iman (best thing to ever come out of Somalia)
Sanaa Lathan
Angelina Jolie (the total package, but I don't like the tatoos)
Jennifer Lopez (can't stand her, but she's got it where it counts)
Scarlett Johannson
Males:
Josh Duhamel
Tom Brady
Owen Lafave (gotta give him a sympathy vote; poor guy)
Julian McMahon
Christian Bale
Chad Michael Murray (looked like a total jerk on the set of House of Wax,
based on what i've seen in MTV's behind-the-scenes documentary; argued,
screamed, yelled and pitched fits at the crew and director; i'm surprised,
really surprised, MTV was allowed to show that)

Not all are. Remember Halle Berry, Grace Jones, Denise Richards, Kim
Basinger, Britt Ekland, Michelle Yeoh, Terri Hatcher, Sophie Marceau, etc.?
All were known or even well known before they became Bond girls.

PARIS - Winsome French actress Audrey Tautou of "Amelie" fame has been chosen
to play Tom Hanks' partner in cracking "The Da Vinci Code" in the film
adaptation of the best-selling novel, the newspaper Le Parisien reported
Saturday.
According to the daily, Tautou is to play the role of Sophie Neveu, the
investigator who helps Robert Langdon (Hanks), a symbologist, solve the murder
of an elderly member of an ancient society that has protected dark secrets
since the early years of Christianity.
Oscar-winning director Ron Howard opted for Tautou last week, then confirmed
his decision in a Wednesday meeting with her in Paris, Le Parisien's cinema
writer Alain Grasset reported without citing sources.
Several celebrity actresses, including Sophie Marceau, sought the role that was
finally narrowed down to Tautou and Linda Hardy, a former Miss France,
according to the article.
Tautou also starred in Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2004 movie "A Very Long
Engagement."
"The Da Vinci Code," by Dan Brown, is a mix of code-breaking, art history,
secret societies, religion and lore. Filming of the mystical thriller is
expected to start in June. Sony Pictures has said it plans to release the film
May 19, 2006.
The famed Louvre Museum has agreed in principal to allow scenes to be shot
there, Louvre director Henri Loyrette said Friday. It is the murder of a Louvre
curator that triggers the search for the so-called Da Vinci code.

PARIS (AFP) - French President Jacques Chirac decorated US filmmaker Steven
Spielberg with the Legion of Honor, the country's highest distinction, in a
ceremony attended by a cluster of film stars.
"Our country loves cinema, all of cinema," said Chirac. "It is the essence of
our fight for cultural diversity... recognizing the equal dignity of all
cultures," said the French leader before honoring Spielberg.
Chirac then evoked Spielberg's film Schindler's List, which he described as one
of his personal favorites.
"In this difficult period where intolerance, racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism
and fanaticism are again manifesting themselves, it is essential for cinema
(...) to help us recall the horror of the unspeakable."
In his response, Spielberg, who had arrived from the northern town of Deauville
where he is attending the 30th annual American Film Festival, warned that
hatred was a global threat more dangerous than either AIDS or cancer.
"We live in a world right now which is not recognizable from what I experienced
growing up in the 1950s and 1960s," he told Chirac.
"I commend your efforts in what you are doing about anti-Semitism here in
France (...) We have to work very, very hard to make people understand that it
is the differences we have to celebrate and not condemn."
"Sometimes the minorities have the most to contribute to a society," the Jewish
director added.
Spielberg also paid tribute to legendary French film director Francois
Truffaut, who died 20 years ago and who had starred in Spielberg's 1977
classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Attending the ceremony at the Elysee presidential palace were such French and
American film personalities as Gwyneth Paltrow, Sophie Marceau, Nathalie Baye
and Patrick Bruel.
The National Order of the Legion of Honor was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte and
recognizes eminent service to the Republic of France.
