Kennedy Center honors five performing greats
By Karen Thomas, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON - Among them, they have 17 Grammys, six Tonys and two Oscars.
Kennedy Center honorees Robert Redford and Tina Turner sing the national
anthem before the ceremony kicks off.
By Evan Vucci, AP
Robert Redford, 68; Tina Turner, 66; Tony Bennett, 79; ballerina Suzanne
Farrell, 60; and Tony-winning actress Julie Harris, 80, were saluted here
Sunday at the 28th annual 2005 Kennedy Center Honors.
The show, which will air Dec. 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, included some teary
toasts. Bennett "inspired so many of us for so long," singer k.d. lang said
"The world is a much better place with you in it." Oprah Winfrey gushed that
a Turner concert is "a life-enhancing experience. ... I love you. I respect
you. And you make me proud to spell my name, w-o-m-a-n."
And there were roaring roasts: "On my 70th birthday, I set fire to my
tuxedo. Is Redford really here?" Paul Newman (sans tux) joked, noting his
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid co-star rarely makes it to events on
time. "The only reason he made it here tonight is because they told him it
was yesterday." (Newman's right hand was bandaged because of surgery.)
Beyoncé Knowles, in a dead-on imitation of Turner, right down to the
hair-flip and rapid butt jiggle, opened Proud Mary with, "You know, when I
think of Tina, I think of two Tinas in my life. My mother, Tina. And the
amazing Tina Turner."
With the entire audience on its feet, Knowles' microphone malfunctioned
shortly into the song, but a tuxedoed stagehand was able to swap a working
mike into the stand before Knowles dived into the second half of the song.
The honorees acknowledged the on-stage tributes without saying a word.
Bennett held both hands over his heart. Redford flicked his nose, à la his
character in TheSting. And Turner, who said before the show she was grateful
she didn't "have to make a speech," blew kisses.

If people can get in than the store is NOT CLOSED you fool. After-hours
shopping and CLOSED are different things. Oprah was told the store was
CLOSED. She didn't believe them and automatically assumed after-hours
shopping was going on for some other chichipoopoo customers but not her
because she's insecure and viewed it as racially biased without proof.

And you're a poseur pretending to know about things you don't. They
don't just keep employees around after hours just in case, maybe,
perhaps, someone rich or famous may pop in and drop a load of money.
That's idiotic. They have to schedule and pay employees to work extra
hours. Even the rich and famous make appointments. If someone famous
pops in unannounced and a store can accommodate them then they do.
Anyone who wants to shop before or after regular hours usually has to
make an appointment so the store can make arrangements. Otherwise it's
a crapshoot whether or not they get in. It's a courtesy and not a
God-given right. The employees were still there because they were
setting up for a special event that had been planned way before Oprah
ever hauled her fat ass over there. Sometimes stores have after hours
special events by invitation only. They couldn't accommodate her
because people were coming and they had other things to take care of.
She had a large entourage with her, as shown on the security tape, and
the store had no way of knowing how long she planned to shop, who else
with her planned to shop, and they were getting ready for an event.
That there was an event planned for later is a very easy thing to prove
or disprove, and had it not been the case someone (*cough* Oprah) would
have done so by now. Use some fucking common sense!
> Again we're not talking about every post office and supermarket. The

The post office and supermarket analogy was meant to explain why the
average person had no fucking sympathy at all upon hearing Oprah's tale
of woe and "humiliation" and why this has been such a PR disaster for
her. Everyone has had a situation of not being let into a store where
customers are finishing up their shopping. Oprah then made things worse
by going on TV and claiming she wasn't looking for VIP treatment which
you yourself admit she was. The security tape shows her arriving after
hours, the doorman handed her a business card with store hours on it.
She's a liar.

As well as a moron. If you're going to spout off about what did or
didn't happen try to at least do some research. Hermes came out with an
official statement and there's a security tape that backs them up. It
was shown on TV. The tape shows Oprah speaking to the doorman who hands
her a business card with store hours on it, then she's let into the
store to speak with the sales rep, then the manager. She wouldn't take
no for an answer and kept pestering the employees. The tape shows her
confronting several people in succession who all told her the store was
CLOSED and to please come back the next day. When the Hermes CEO went
on Oprah's show, Oprah didn't deny it. Hermes had made an official
statement they told her the store was closed, that they had a special
event, and asked her come back the next day. Oprah NEVER DENIED any of
this. She implied she didn't believe them because she saw people
inside the store who looked like maybe they were customers, and
complained someone was "rude" to her. She's never explained exactly how
they were rude to her, or what they said to her that was so rude. I
find that extremely interesting. I also find interesting your
contention she wasn't told the store was closed when everything
indicates otherwise. Who's ass did you pull that one out of?
> Like you respected her before any of this. I for one respect her one
> hell of a lot more more standing up for her dignity at all costs, but
> that's something you wouldn't understand.

She has no dignity in this situation. When she had both the opportunity
and PROOF that she was racially discriminated against years ago,
because she wasn't let into a store during hours, an incident she
openly discussed on her show, she refused to openly name the store,
which infuriated me because she should have raked them over the coals.
Was she standing up for her dignity then? In that case they didn't buzz
her into the store and left her standing on the street. Then she goes
public years later against another store any without proof it was
racially biased. She came across as a self-absorbed and insecure with a
sense of entitlement. She demanded special treatment and then lied she
didn't on TV. She tried to blame it on racism and then backed down
because she didn't have a fat leg to stand on. She used other people as
her mouthpiece (GAYLE) but was too cowardly to actually come forward
and give details herself. Instead she announced she was doing 'a show'
about it to capitalize on the situation. When the Hermes CEO finally
comes on her show she backs down and sucks up as usual (oh no, I wasn't
looking to get in after hours, I never said not to buy Hermes
merchandise, that garage sale was just a rumor I suppose, I thought I
saw customers, and oh this one sales clerk was rude to me) AND YET at
the time she called it one of the most humiliating experiences she'd
ever had. It was so humiliating she devoted a whole five minutes to it.
She came across as shallow for calling it one the most humiliating
experiences she's ever had because she was raped as a child and not
getting VIP treatment to buy luxury goods is ridiculous in comparison.
Get some fucking perspective. Name dropping Tina Turner'>Tina Turner made her look
like a pathetic star fucker. What did Tina Turner'>Tina Turner have to do with her
"humiliation"? If she was buying a watch for an average ordinary
non-famous friend it wouldn't have been 'as bad'? (Oh look, I was
trying to be soooo generous to poor poor deprived Tina, and because of
that bad bad Hermes Tina suffered and I look like such a cheapskate for
not bringing an expensive gift to pay off my friends for having dinner
with me oh boohoohoo).
> respect for you.
There are statements Oprah made. There are statements Hermes made.
There's a security tape. There's common sense. Because you're an
incomprehensible moron who can't put two and two together doesn't mean
everyone else didn't see through the bullshit.
>You are giving them the benefit of the doubt because

By repeatedly ascribing racial motivations without evidence you've
proven you're a racist and a hypocrite. Oprah threw out her credibility
out the window by making assumptions too.
> Well I have no idea if your story is true,
Try googling.
> but it certianly

How the fuck does it speak well for her? It made her look like a coward
for not speaking up when she actually had a legitimate provable case.
Then she went and assumed the same thing was happening when the
circumstances were very different. There's a big difference between not
being let in during normal business hours, and not being let in when
the store is CLOSED. There's a big difference between left standing on
the street versus being let into the store and the manager and other
employees come to speak with you.

Oprah wasn't anywhere near her hometown when the funeral occured, but
she happened to be in Paris when it was time to go shopping and she was
shopping for black Tina Turner and she was with black Gayle at the
time. It's absolutely ridiculous for her to jump on her jet and fly all
the way back to Chicago every time a black person dies. Or should she
have
attended his funeral because he was once America's richest black? It's
one thing when a business gives big spending customers better treatment
than less spending customers, but in death we're all equal.
Why should she attend someone's funeral because of the color of their
skin? Johnson was an outstanding black achiever who has my highest
respect, however white Phil Donahue did far more to pave the way for
Oprah than Johnson did. By the time Oprah decided to get into the
magazine business, she was already set to become a billionaire, and her
magazine is nothing like Johnson's.
If anything the black press was a thorn on Oprah's side, getting on
her case because she hugged white women too often, instead of just
letting her be a human being showing compassion for the audience that
made her rich regardless of race. It was gays and fat working class
white women that built Oprah's empire, and only now, after she's become
the greatest black philanthropist in history, produced and promoted
more black art and black artists than just about anyone, and has become
Nelson Mandella's hero, do we see the black press constantly singing
her praises.
But as much as I admire Johnson because he helped other blacks succeed
and provided a wonderful inspiration, I don't think he had anything to
do with Oprah's success.

What I have stated is Oprah
> initiated a media campaign alleging racism with little evidence to
> back up that allegation.
Calling it "little evidence" is a very subjective judgment on your
part.
As has already been explained, volumes of evidence shows
discrimination against blacks in high end retail, and there's no
question that Oprah was denied after hours treatment white celebs and
white VIPs very frequently enjoy at high-end stores. If you can forget
about the fact that you don't like Oprah, and just look at the facts
objectively, you'll probably conclude that she has a stronger case than
most blacks that claim racism.
> apparently felt no obligation of any sort to let her in. It seems the

And in doing so may have revealed something bad about their
character.
I'm not so much defending the "hoity-toity", as you
> call them, as I am criticising Oprah for instigating an immature media
> campaign meant to slur what is probably an innocent company.
>
By what logic do you conclude that Oprah's version of the story is
*probably* wrong? High-end stores have a well documented history of
discriminating against blacks, and Oprah seems to have no documented
hisory of claiming racism. Further, Oprah has nothing to gain and
everything to lose by making false claims about such a trivial issue,
but the store has everything to gain by denying those charges even if
they are true, and everything to lose by agreeing with Oprah. Given the
above, who is more likely to be keeping it real?
Now there are many many cases when I do think black celebs play the
race card like when OJ and Michael jackson were on trial, BUT both of
these men were in the fight of their lives so it makes sense that they
would get desperate. Oprah was not in the fight of her life. Her
ratings are the best they've been in years and she's at the top of her
game, and 99.9% of stores will accept her after hours business. She
had no motive to claim racism over something so trivial unless she
honestly believes she experienced it.
> It seems to me that Oprah counts "hoity toity" celebrities as her best
> freinds, not the ordinary soccer moms you claim are so dear to her

Tina Turner'>Tina Turner is an icon for battered women. John Travolta was just a
working class kid who made it big, and is the same age as Oprah and a
lot of her fans. These celebs may be rich, but they are far from
hoity-toity. Much the same can be said for Roseanne, Dr. Phil, Dolly
Parton and most of Oprah's other favorite celebrities. Most of the
celebrities Oprah likes were at one time considered trash. Oprah looks
up to people that society looks down on.
> that engenders this deep rooted antipathy towards the literary world?
In fairness, it was you that demonstrated a very superficial
understanding of the word "objective".
> And Oprah's response to the author was far from dignified. She beat
> the guy silly in the press simply because he did not want to be

That's actually not true at all. All Oprah said was that since the
author was uncomfortable she would skip the dinner, and she said
nothing else since. It was his peers in the literary community that
beat him silly in the press. And it was him who initiated the fight by
verbally beating up on Oprah's audience.
But you did deny the existence of objective evidence for her
entertainment value. A large audience is exactly that.
The objective
> reality you can't deny is there is a large population that will not

Oh I agree with you there. It's a matter of opinion whether Oprah
experienced racism, however there are objective statistics that support
her opinion, though it can never be proven either way.
> the Amercian public.
Shakespeare was one of the richest and most popular entertainers of
his time. Are we to conclude that he was a talentless hack too?
And Oprah's not just popular with the public. She's won more emmys than
probably any other talk show host by far, despite the fact that she
took her name out of the runnig after winning the life-time achievement
award in the 1990s.

have developed cirrhosis during her marriage to Ike, but she didn't.

Who wouldn't rather go shopping than attend a funeral? Oprah wasn't
anywhere near her hometown when the funeral occured, but she happened
to be in Paris when it was time to go shopping and she was shopping for
black Tina Turner and she was with black Gayle at the time. It's
absolutely ridiculous for her to jump on her jet and fly all the way
back to Chicago every time a black person dies. Or should she have
attended his funeral because he was once America's richest black? It's
one thing when a business gives big spending customers better treatment
than less spending customers, but in death we're all equal.
