Get set for the real me
The real Minogue ... the post-treatment photograph that her boyfriend took
revealed a relaxed and happy Kylie.
Photo: AP
June 4, 2006
Kylie Minogue talks for the first time about life on the post-cancer
comeback trail. Pippa Smith gets the lowdown.
OF all her looks and images over the years, the one that Kylie Minogue is
sporting now - happy, relieved and in love - is the closest you will ever
get to the real woman behind the pop queen.
A year-long battle with breast cancer has stripped the Aussie star of the
glitz and glamour associated with her fame.
But after overcoming a condition that has claimed the lives of so many,
Minogue is on the verge of one of the greatest comebacks in entertainment
history - and this time it is the real her. No stylists, no gimmicks and no
hype.
Just the prospect of seeing the 38-year-old back on stage this November -
the rumoured date that she'll resume her Showgirls tour - is enough to whip
her fans into a frenzy and have the public breathe a collective sigh of
relief.
The news that the singer and actor had cancer sent fans reeling, and each
stage of her recovery has generated front-page headlines.
Now Minogue wants to make headlines again for the right reasons - as an
entertainer.
She has been back in the studio working on a new album and is desperate to
complete the Australian leg of her cancelled 2005 world tour. There is also
the prospect of marriage to the man who has stood by her through the past 12
months, Olivier Martinez.
"I'm still taking things slowly, but I've had a great week in the studio and
things couldn't be any better," Minogue says, as she gently pulls together
the fragments of a life that was shattered by the breast cancer diagnosis.
"I feel good and I can't wait to get back into the swing of things. It's
been a long, hard road to now."
Just as her hair is growing back after rounds of chemotherapy, so is the
confidence that enabled this pint-sized performer to stand in front of
thousands and sing to the masses.
That confidence in herself partly explains how Minogue has come through her
darkest hour, but she needed help from her fans, her family and her man.
Martinez has never given up on the woman he loves, despite the heartache and
turmoil of watching her fight for her life. Now, on the eve of her comeback,
he is still the rock in Minogue's life and predictions are that he will be
there for her for years to come.
Wedding rumours were flying about before Minogue's cancer diagnosis - they
are certain to be even more intense now. In fact, some are already saying
that Minogue will not only marry the 40-year-old French actor - she will do
it twice.
Wedding planners are reportedly helping the pair with arrangements for
ceremonies in France and Australia, thereby appeasing the ever-supportive
families of both stars.
Martinez has already been in Corsica scouting out the perfect venue for the
French half of the double big day.
It has taken a while for Minogue to come around to the idea of being a bride
and a wife but she celebrated her 38th birthday last Sunday and, after her
life-changing ordeal, she will probably never be readier than now.
"It seems a recent fashion to rush into marriage but that has never been for
me," she says. "I'm more traditional in that way. I don't have that sense of
urgency.
"I think it all comes from my parents. I've got an incredible family and my
parents are very happy. Their marriage is a great thing to aspire to,"
Minogue says of her slow walk towards the wedding aisle. The pop princess
has been dating gorgeous Martinez for almost four years now but has always
remained tight-lipped on matters of the heart.
"Ollie is lovely," she says of the man dubbed the French Brad Pitt. "Our
relationship has gone well from the beginning. I suppose it helps that he
understands my career.
"Relationships are wonderful but they require some work whether you're miles
away or in the same situation all the time. I'm good at communicating with
phone calls and texts. That's the key."
The distances have not been nearly as great since Minogue's cancer
diagnosis. Martinez has put his career on hold to be there for her.
"I've just been lucky," Minogue says on finding her dream man. "This
relationship was meant to be. We really have fun together."
Her chemotherapy will mean that babies are on hold for Minogue for a couple
of years but the prospect of starting a family in her 40s does not scare
her.
"Yes, I feel broody - it's only natural," says the singer who recently
became an aunty to her brother Brendan's baby boy. "It hasn't happened yet
but I hope it will some day. I do seem to have a connection with children.
"When Can't Get You Out Of My Head came out, it was such a catchy song that
a lot of parents told me the first word their child said was, 'Kylie!'
"Most of my fans want motherhood to happen for me and are really excited at
the thought, which is lovely. If and when it happens, then great. Family as
a whole is very important to me and I think I will need that more as I get
older."
Illness does not seem to have affected Minogue's appetite for life, either.
While she feels ready to settle down and start a family she has no plans on
giving up her day job.
"I have thought of retiring to a little house and giving it all up, but when
I think about it I realise I have a job that I love and I get a lot of
enjoyment from it," Minogue says.
"I want to settle down, but I've got stuff I want to do in my career, too.
"I've got so much whirring around in my mind that I don't know where to
start. It's exciting," she says.
But do not expect the colourful pop princess to be spinning around in
hotpants when she does make her triumphant return to centre stage.
"I think all of my past images, and none of them, are like me," Minogue
says.
"I've gone through a lot of changes, states of mind and different
understandings about myself."
Since emerging from Neighbours in the 1980s, Minogue has become something of
a trendsetter. All the while though she has been constantly dogged with
questions about whether she has had cosmetic surgery.
The beautiful singer has admitted in the past that the weight of expectation
of looking young and perfect was a heavy burden - one that she should now
surely be excused from.
"I'm just like any girl, and I have the same anxieties and issues," says
Minogue, who in her first official post-cancer photos looks as stunning as
ever - even with the short hair.
"Of course, it's lovely and very flattering to hear those compliments but
it's almost like being given a gift and you don't know what to do with it,"
she says.
Minogue's comeback will herald a new round of compliments but this time for
more than her beauty and talent but also for her bravery and strength.
It is a new dawn for everyone's favourite girl-next-door and no one is
keener about the future than Minogue herself.
"I always look forward," she says. "I'm not a great believer in looking
back.
"I've always lived in the moment because I know more than most how things
can suddenly drop from the sky and shake everything up. That's something
about me that has never changed."
CAREER COMEBACKS
Kirstie Alley She was America's sweetheart as Rebecca Howe in the sitcom
Cheers and had moderate success with the Look Who's Talking movies, but
Alley quickly became better known for her bulge than her acting. Then she
started to shift the weight, became a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig and wrote
and starred in a new sitcom, Fat Actress. The ubiquitous, teary Oprah
appearance followed and Alley was back on the A-list.
Teri Hatcher and Nicollette Sheridan The poster girl for comeback queens in
Hollywood, Hatcher had been on a career slide after Lois And Clark. Then
along came a little television show called Desperate Housewives and she is
again on top of the Hollywood pile. Ditto for 1980s wonder child Nicollette
Sheridan, who snapped up the role of Edie Britt that Pamela Anderson
famously turned down. She is now back with former love Michael Bolton -
enough said.
John Travolta The 1970s and 1980s were good to the smooth-moving actor with
hits such as Grease, but the 1990s not so kind and Travolta (and his agent)
would have been left wondering why he turned down the lead in An Officer and
a Gentleman. Then in 1993 he got a called from little-known director Quentin
Tarantino who wanted him for his project, Pulp Fiction, and Travolta danced
with Uma Thurman right into an Academy Award nomination.
Peter Andre It was 1996 and Andre's pop hit Mysterious Girl was No. 1 here
and in the UK. But his famed six-pack physique couldn't hold up his career.
Then he starred in the British reality television show I'm A Celebrity, Get
Me Out Of Here and struck up a romance with British model Jordan and he was
back in the news. He rereleased Mysterious Girl in 2004, which shot back to
No. 1 in the UK, married Jordan and is recording a new album.
CAREER DEATHS
Charlie Sheen His 1986 performance in Oliver Stone's Platoon was nothing
short of brilliant and Sheen was tipped to become one of the finest actors
of his generation. Now he is better known for the Heidi Fleiss callgirl
scandal, reported drug and gambling habits and a nasty split from wife
Denise Richards. He is now seen on small screens in the sitcom Two And A
Half Men and the paparazzi shots of him leaving nightclubs with Victoria's
Secret models.
Matt Le Blanc He was once our favourite Friend, but struggled to keep the
momentum going after the show finished. Le Blanc went on to star in the
sitcom spin off Joey, which failed to hit the mark and was unceremoniously
axed by American broadcaster NBC this year. He is currently out of work and
probably wondering what went wrong.
Courtney Love Fame claimed Mrs Kurt Cobain, but she slipped out of the
public eye following his tragic death. She reinvented herself as a glam rock
chick and her band, Hole, had a No. 1 album. Then came actress Courtney, and
she drew critical praise for The People Vs. Larry Flynt, but the career
comeback was damaged by stints in rehab and arrests for drug possession. It
remains to be seen if her sleek, new look and planned album will bring her
back from the brink.
Michael Jackson Where do you start with the former King of Pop? He has had
more attempted career comebacks than court appearances and his last album,
Invincible, failed to impress a public growing in suspicion of his antics.
Almost certainly beyond redemption when it comes to a career revival,
Jackson may never know when to quit.

Ouch! What did Ethan do?

NY POST...PAGE 6
IT'S splitsville for Uma Thurman and hotelier Andre Balazs, Page Six
can reveal.
The rumblings about their breakup built into a roar after the glamorous
"Kill Bill" star showed up solo at the Oscars - but insiders say the
bloom was off the rose weeks ago.
"They recently got into a huge fight and Uma dumped him," says one
in-the-know source. "Uma had decided he was not the kind of man she
would marry and was looking for a way out."
Another source adds: "She stayed at the Peninsula during the Oscars -
and I don't think it was because she couldn't get a room at the Chateau
Marmont," the storied hotel that Balazs owns on the Sunset Strip.
Thurman's publicist Robert Garlock, who accompanied her to the Vanity
Fair Oscar party in Beverly Hills, gave us this statement from his
newly single client:
"Unfortunately, it is true. But we remain close friends."
Balazs' A-list properties include the Mercer Hotel in New York and the
Chateau Marmont and the Standard in L.A. He was formerly married to
Katie Ford, CEO of Ford Models.
Ford and Balazs were very cordial last year at the Sweet 16 party for
their daughter, Alessandra, at Indochine attended by the likes of
Oliver Platt, Jay McInerney and auto heiress Anne Ford (no relation).
The stunning Thurman, who split from husband Ethan Hawke in 2004 after
he cheated on her with a Canadian waitress, said last year that she was
smitten with the hotel honcho and confessed that she would find it hard
if she wasn't in a relationship.
"I'm with a wonderful man who's been there for me - that's something
very unusual for me," she gushed of Balazs in an interview last year.
"I'm very happy. I couldn't live without any of my essential organs."
Thurman said at the time that she keeps a civil relationship with Ethan
for the sake of their two children, daughter Maya, 7, and 4-year-old
son Roan.
One insider said Balazs and Thurman were "taking a break" and might end
up back together. "They are very good friends. There's no rancor," said
the source, who speculated the relationship deteriorated because "it
was too much, too soon and they were both on the rebound."

Somewhere, sometime, I read a Freudian analysis of the foot fetish
claiming it stemmed from chasing The Mother's feet and the adult
fixation of watching a sexy woman walk away - IOWs a rejecting woman.
Controlling the feet means she won't leave or something, but she is
sexiest when stalking away. Ergo - neurotic relationships with
unattainable women.
Totally screwy, but there it is.

Tarantino has a foot fetish because he is more interested in shooting his
female stars' feet than wrapping up scenes.
The 35-year-old first spotted Tarantino's penchant for feet when they shot
Pulp Fiction in 1994 - and when he based an entire scene around her toes in
2003's Kill Bill: Vol. 1 she was amazed he still denied having a foot
fetish.
She says: "Well, it started in Pulp Fiction with that foot massage speech.
He denies his foot fetish, but he's accused of it regularly. I don't think
it's me in particular.
"Many people commented during Kill Bill that he could release a whole
version entirely on the foot-shots that he took of all the actors, shoed,
un-shoed."

IMDB is hardly a definitive source. It gets lots of stuff wrong.

Maybe she was wearing high heels the day IMDB and Biography measured her!!!

Bond Star Pierce Brosnan Denies Slapping Teri Hatcher
November 8, 2005, 6:40:20 BROSNAN: 'I NEVER SLAPPED DESPERATE TERI'
Former JAMES BOND star PIERCE BROSNAN is keen to end reports suggesting he
slapped DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES star TERI HATCHER'>TERI HATCHER on the DIE ANOTHER DAY set
over her punctuality problems.
The Irish actor admits he was far from happy with Hatcher's timekeeping and
made his feelings public, but he thinks too much has been made of the screen
lovers' spat.
He says, "The Teri Hatcher incident was blown out of proportion. She was
late to the set because she was newly pregnant. I did not know that until
the end of the day.
"She didn't slap me. I didn't slap her. I was vexed because I had a call
time of 6 or 7am, and we didn't do any work until three or four in the
afternoon. No one told me her situation until afterwards.
"By that time I'd already shot my mouth off and cussed and moaned and
groaned. That's all it was, a storm in a teacup."
BROSNAN REGRETS NOT ROMANCING BELLUCCI AND THURMAN AS BOND
Meanwhile the Bond star PIERCE BROSNAN has one major regret after losing the
coveted JAMES BOND role - he didn't romance actresses MONICA BELLUCCI or UMA
THURMAN.
The Irishman charmed DENISE RICHARDS, FAMKE JANSSEN, TERI HATCHER'>TERI HATCHER and HALLE
BERRY during his four-film stint as 007, but he admits he always hoped
Thurman and Bellucci would be cast as Bond girls.
He says, "Monica Bellucci is a ravishing beauty - a gorgeous, gorgeous
woman.
"She screen-tested to be a Bond girl a while back, and the fools said no.
Teri Hatcher stole the day instead. Uma Thurman is another magnificent
beauty and a fine actress."
But Brosnan hasn't completely given up on romancing his lady loves on the
big screen - he's hoping one of them will play his leading lady in THE
THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR sequel.
He adds, "We've come around to talking about a sequel to The Thomas Crown
Affair. Again it's a love story and a romance, but this time it's not going
to be with RENE RUSSO. We've been thinking about women, and there are just
stunning women out there."

Halloween brought the horror out to movie theaters this weekend, and Saw II,
pretty much by itself, brought the box office back to life. We had three
wide release openers, the aforementioned Saw II from Lions Gate, Sony's
expensive The Legend of Zorro, Prime with Uma Thurman'>Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep, and
The Weather Man starring a sad looking Nic Cage. Without Saw II, we would be
having another one of the slow weekends full of disappointments to which
we've become so accustomed. It's amazing what a $30.5 million opener will
do.
What do you do when your first film, shot for a little over $1 million
dollars, rakes in over $100 million worldwide at the box office? Make
another, quick. That's what novice filmmakers James Wan and Leigh Whannell
along with Lions Gate did with the now franchise Saw films. Despite opening
against the second weekend of The Grudge last year, the original Saw grossed
$18.3 million from 2,315 venues over the same weekend. Saw finished with
$55.2 million in the domestic kitty, and was considered a breakout success,
considering the tiny budget and the film virginity of the director and one
of its stars. This Halloween we get Saw II, with a budget tripled to a
still-tiny $4 million, starring no one, and featuring another new director.
Could Lions Gate repeat their success, and if so, how much higher could the
sequel open?
Saw II is the number one film by a landslide, and is one of the very few big
surprises at the box office for 2005. Saw II grossed an out-of-this-world
$30.5 million from 2,949 venues. That equals a venue average of $10,342.
Tracking estimates had Saw II finishing the weekend with about $22 million,
so to say it was off badly is an understatement (BOP's Reagen Sulewski was
much closer with a $27 million estimate). As expected, the internal weekend
multiplier for Saw II was a sequelish 2.5; however, with Halloween on
Monday, Saw II should have another good night on Monday, making Saw II's
opening even better. Saw II had the same mixed-to-bad reviews that the
original had, with Saw II coming in at 38% fresh compared to the original's
rating of 45% (if you though reviews were going to be good I have some
oceanfront property for you in Idaho). After the success of the original,
there was no doubt that there is a large audience for grisly horror, as the
Saw franchise promotes a similarity to '70s icon The Texas Chainsaw
Massacre. Saw II was made for an absolutely tiny $4 million, and to make
almost eight times the budget over opening weekend provokes comparisons to
films like The Blair Witch Project. Think of it this way: for both films,
Twisted Pictures and Lions Gate Entertainment have now paid about $5.2
million in production costs and have recouped $130 million worldwide, with a
lot more to come from the sequel (and its sequels). A solid franchise has
been born this weekend, so you can expect to see another Jigsaw flick next
year.
For Lions Gate, Saw II is just another entry into what's been a simply
fantastic year for the studio. It all started with Diary of A Mad Black
Woman, which opened to over $20 million before earning $50 million at the
domestic box office against a budget of about $6 million. Then the studio
had Crash, a $7 million production which earned $55 million domestically and
another $20 million overseas. They've also had The Devil's Rejects which
earned $16.9 million versus a $7 million budget, and Waiting with a budget
of $1 million and a gross so far of about $15.5 million. Now they have Saw
II, which will easily be their biggest of the year. Unless something bizarre
happens come Christmas, Lions Gate is a shoe-in for studio of the year.
In a depressing box office year, the good news never lasts long, and we're
back to disappointing results with The Legend of Zorro. Maybe the king of
unnecessary sequels, audiences caught on to this one before opening weekend
and the result is an opening well off what tracking was indicating. The
Zorro sequel grossed a less-than-expected $16.5 million this weekend from an
ultra-wide 3,520 locations, giving it a venue average of $4,687. The
original Banderas/Zorro flick was a summer film back in 1998, with a budget
of $95 million. It earned $22.5 million (in 1998 dollars) over its opening
weekend, and tracking was looking for a similar figure. With the original,
Columbia Pictures had a good film that was destined to have legs, with the
sequel, they have the opposite. Reviews for The Legend of Zorro were brutal,
with only 23 positive reviews out of a possible 91, leading to a quite
rotten score of 25%. This one cost $80 million to make and will have to work
hard to earn back half of that domestically. Internationally, this one still
has a chance, as the first one made $95 million in the domestic market and
came out with an international total of $250 million.
Third goes to our first wide release that got massacred this weekend, Prime,
starring Uma Thurman'>Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep. Universal failed to give this one the
marketing push or the venues to put it into a winning position. With only
1,829 locations, Prime grossed $6.4 million, giving it a venue average of
$3,500. What this film needed, it didn't have, and that is reviews. At
RottenTomatoes, only 35 reviews out of a possible 74 were positive, giving
it a fresh rating of 47%. That's not going to cut it with a movie like
Prime, and we will see this one in the $9.99 bin at Wal-Mart before
Christmas 2006.
Fourth this weekend goes to Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story, the horse
movie starring Dakota Fanning and Kurt Russell. After opening with an okay
$9.2 million last weekend, DreamWorks tried to cash in on kid word-of-mouth
and added almost 500 venues, bringing the total up to 2,491. The move worked
fairly well, as Dreamer grossed $6.3 million in its sophomore frame, down a
not-bad 31%. Made for about $30 million, Dreamer should finish with about
$40 million, or more if word-of-mouth kicks it up a bit.
Fifth goes to Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit, who hang on
to a top five spot after four weeks of release. The cheese fanatic and his
dog dropped a larger than expected 49% this weekend, pulling in a gross of
$4.4 million. As good a film as this one is, its somewhat surprising to see
the bottom fall out so quickly; however, we saw a similar thing with Tim
Burton's The Corpse Bride, so maybe parents are perceiving these films as
too scary. Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit has now earned
$49.8 million versus a budget of about $30 million.
Way back in sixth this weekend is The Weather Man from Paramount, which has
a huge star and huge director, but very few venues. Surprisingly, this Nic
Cage (The Rock, National Treasure) and Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the
Caribbean) movie received only 1,510 venues for its debut, and it's paying
for it with a debut in sixth. The Weather Man grossed $4.2 million, and
didn't even do all that well in terms of screen average, as it finished with
an average of $2,798, good for fourth best in the top ten. It didn't help
that one of the first reviews for The Weather Man called it "one of the
biggest downers to emerge...in recent history". Things got a bit better
review-wise, but it couldn't recover. The RottenTomatoes rating ended up at
55% fresh, which is mixed at best. Stranger things have happened; The
Weather Man could find an audience... the possibility of that happening next
weekend? Almost zero percent.
After finishing in top spot over the last frame, Doom got hammered this
weekend falling a spectacular 74%, a dive usually reserved for really bad
horror sequels. Doom grossed a very poor $4.1 million this weekend, and
should be out of the top ten after this weekend. The $80 million film has
now earned $22.9 million, and may struggle to reach $35 million.
Eighth goes to North Country, as WB failed to add any screens in its second
weekend. The Charlize Theron starrer grossed $3.7 million, off a large 43%
from last weekend. The $35 million film now has a total gross of $12.2
million.
Ninth goes to The Fog, as the John Carpenter remake got hammered in the face
of Saw II. The Fog grossed $3.3 million this weekend, down 51% from last
weekend. Made for only $20 million, The Fog now has a cume of $25.5 million.
Flightplan finishes in tenth this weekend with a gross of $2.6 million. The
Jodie Foster thriller has now earned $81.2 million.
Overall this weekend, despite the impressive performance of Saw II, the top
ten box office still lagged behind last year's totals. The top ten this
weekend earned about $82 million, close, but not close enough to last year's
total of about $89 million.

Thurman Embroiled in Benefit Backlash
AP / Remy de la Mauviniere
Actress Uma Thurman has been branded unreliable after allegedly going back
on her promise to host a science benefit at the end of this month.
The star reportedly lent her name to the International Neuroscience
Foundation event, not realizing the favor would involve acting as host for
the night.
Her subsequent reluctance to commit to the job prompted organizer Liz Cohen
to track her down on a night out and demand a definitive answer.
An onlooker tells Page Six the publicist "accosted and harassed" the star
and told Thurman, "We need 100 percent commitment!" But she was thrown out
of the restaurant for not having a reservation.
Thurman, who is scheduled to be on the set of the new movie, "Super
Ex-Girlfriend," that night was unsurprisingly non-committal.
Her spokesperson says, "If she is done in time, she'll be happy to attend."
Cohen meanwhile insists, "Uma completely agreed to host the benefit -- she
is coming and doing it."

Uma Thurman Ethan Hawke 'No Longer' The Man She Married
October 11, 2005, 7:15:54
THURMAN WILL FORGIVE HAWKE WHEN SHE RECOGNISES HIM AGAIN .
Actress UMA THURMAN is struggling to forgive her ex-husband ETHAN HAWKE
after their bitter marriage split, because she no longer recognises him as
the man she married in 1998. .
KILL BILL star Thurman split from the TRAINING DAY actor last summer (04)
amid reports of his infidelity. The couple's divorce was finalised in August
(05). .
And Thurman admits she faces an uphill struggle to befriend Hawke again, for
the sake of their two children. .
She says, "He's their dad, he's got to be a great guy and he's got to
succeed in life and he's got to feel good about himself and I hope that he
winds up there. .
"I don't know how he feels at the moment... We don't have a lot of personal
chats about how we're doing, not at the moment. .
"It's very difficult because there's so much hurt feelings. You try to talk
and you reach out... and it's clear there's a lot of unfinished damage and
baggage and this stuff that's still in the way.
"I want to recognise him again. I want to see the guy that I married, I want
to trust him and I want to feel good and comfortable again."
- Celebrity Gossip
- Her placid face bears the wide eyes and full lips of a classic vamp. These (and other) physical attributes, combined with an air of youthful sophistication, make Thurman the thinking filmgoer's dream date. She made her film debut in Kiss Daddy Goodnight (1987), but neither it nor Johnny Be Good (1988), a sub-John Hughes-type teen comedy, held much promise for this model and cover girl. Dangerous Liaisons (also 1988), however, changed people's perception of Thurman, and her erotically charged performance won her critical praise. Henry & June (1990) gave her a leading role as Henry Miller's wife in the controversial (but little-seen) film based on Anaïs Nin's diaries; another 1990 film, John Boorman's Where the Heart Is also failed to win much of an audience. But Thurman acquitted herself nicely in those parts, and in subsequent roles as well: Kim Basinger's emotionally disturbed sister in Final Analysis (1992), a blind woman stalked by a serial killer in Jennifer 8 (also 1992), the unwilling pawn of gangster Bill Murray who falls in love with Robert De Niro in Mad Dog and Glory (1993), and the leading characters in the long-awaited Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1994) and Pulp Fiction (also 1994, for which she received an Oscar nomination). She was formerly married to actor Gary Oldman.
- "Desperation is the perfume of the young actor. It's so satisfying to have gotten rid of it. If you keep smelling it, it can drive you crazy. In this business a lot of people go nuts, go eccentric, even end up dead from it. Not my plan."
- "I was not particularly bright, I wasn't very athletic, I was a little too tall, odd, funny looking, I was just really weird as a kid."
- "It is better to have a relationship with someone who cheats on you than with someone who does not flush the toilet."
- "I'm very happy at home. I love to just hang out with my daughter, I love to work in my garden. I'm not a gaping hole of need."
- "Tall, sandy blonde, with sort of blue eyes, skinny in places, fat in others. An average gal." - Uma Thurman, self description
- Wears a size 11 shoe.
- Sister of Dechen Thurman and Ganden Thurman and the daughter of Nena Thurman and Robert Thurman
- Has three brother with equally unusual, exotic names: Ganden, Dechen (who is an actor and director) and Mipam.
- Uma's mother Nena was once married to LSD proponent Timothy Leary. The marriage lasted less than a year (1964-1965). Their marriage, which took place in Nepal, was the subject of a 15-minute documentary entitled "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You." Nena married Uma's father, Robert Thurman, two years later in 1967.
- Has shades of Lancome lipsticks named after her (available only in Asia).
- Uma and Ethan Hawke's daughter's name is Maya; which is also the name of the character that Uma played in _Duke of Groove (1995) (TV)_ .
- Named after the goddess of light and beauty in Indian Mythology.
- Attended the Northfield Mount Hermon boarding school in Massachusetts. Dropped out at age 15.
- With husband Hawke, gave birth to 7lb. 15 oz. son, Roan, Mon 15 January 2002.
